Okay this might seem like a kinda broken design, but I want to see if it is able to be done, let alone done easily. I am using sendmail for this also. I want to have all my mail come into my Anti-Virus box, then have it relayed to my mail server (where it is delivered to the users' mailboxes). That part is pretty easy using a mailer table. The catch is, I want any outgoing mail to be sent from the users' mail clients, to the mail server, then to the AV box, then out. How would I set this up with sendmail on the mail server? Would this be done via the mailertable? I would like to have it this way so that I can scan both incoming and outgoing mail, but I need to be able to not run the anti-virus software on the mail server ( as the load is starting to cause problems ). The other catch is, I already have 5000+ users who are have the mail server setup as just the domain.tld, not mail.domain.tld or pop.domain.tld, so I need to be able to keep that in place. Any ideas? I had originally been using user ppp with it's internal Nat function, but went to natd as the simple stateful type in rc.firewall showed. When I tried to go from a simple stateful [established/setup] to advanced stateful [check-state/keep-state] I kept having trouble with ip address being mismatched. I removed the natd divert rule from the ipfw rules set and deactivated nated and activated ppp -Nat in rc.conf, and the advanced stateful [check-state/keep-state] rule started to work. As I added the keep-state to the udp rules for dns it stopped working. In checking the archives I can across a post that contained a advanced stateful [check-state/keep-state]rule set. It contained the following rule combo. $fwcmd add 00500 check-state $fwcmd add 00501 deny tcp from any to any established $fwcmd add 00502 deny all from any to any frag I added rule 501 & 502 to my rule set after the 500 rule which was all ready there and everything works as exspected. My question is, why does rule 501 make things work?? Specifically I'm looking for guidance (ie, a snip of a conf file) for getting one implemented in an environment where the freebsd box running opengatekeeper needs to service clients sitting behind a firewall running NAT. The firewall and gatekeeper are two separate devices. Opengatekeeper's sparse documentation manages to botch enough english to obscure the intended meaning of the author and deja.com has been unhelpful (for the first time in a long time). I've tried every PAM example I could find, as well as turning off PAM from ProFTPD, and it can never authenticate NIS-known users. It understands users with local accounts, but returns a PAM error in the logs. We run QPOP on the same machine, and it authenticates fine. I copied the PAM configuration line for pop3 and changed the service name (using pam.conf, not pam.d/) with no success. Any ideas? I'm open to suggestions of different FTP daemons that might work properly with NIS. My SMTP server is a PIII/933 with 512mb RAM. I have 3 instances of qmail-smtpd running: Outbound - virus scan Outbound - no virus scan Incoming - virus scan and RBL Local delivery is to an NFS mount. Qmail is patched with the qmail-queue patch, which allows for virus scanning as soon as the message enters the system. I'm using qmail-scanner-queue with NAI's AV. For blocking spam/junk mail, we're using rblsmtpd (part of ucspi-tcp) against RBL+, orbz, and our own list. Daily, we have over 17,000 messages coming in, and about 4600 going out. My mail server never experiences a very high load. I´ve noticed the native FreeBSD client for Legato, unfortunately the version of the client is not up to date anymore. I´ve tried to install it once on a FreeBSD box that has a high number of nmbclusters and the client dumped core. This bug is known and also mentioned on the site where the FreeBSD client is being maintained. I believe the last note concerning this client is from 1999 or something. I find it a little bit unsatisfying that nobody takes the time to keep the software current. I´ve tried once to run the latest Legato client in Linux compatibility mode and it seemed to work. It would be great if anyone would take over the job of creating a package of this one for the ports collection. Regards ... Check Cactus. www.cactus.com. I'm running their Lone-Tar backup system [which does bit-level verfies of the tape against the HD after backup] on a couple of FreeBSD boxes. They support almost every Unix system ever made it seems. I don't know it the MS<>Unix product works there. I've just noticed in client sites that their Windows backup systems are much much slower than anything I've seen in the Unix environment. I cannot help you with clustering but there is an extra mailinglist for this: freebsd-cluster http://docs.freebsd.org/mail/archive/2002/freebsd-cluster/ Maybe there are people subscribed who can help you. -- Noèl Köthe To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isp" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isp Thu Feb 21 6:48:19 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Received: from taka.swcp.com (taka.swcp.com [198.59.115.12]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D86E537B421 for ; Thu, 21 Feb 2002 06:48:09 -0800 (PST) Received: from inago.swcp.com (inago.swcp.com [198.59.115.17]) by taka.swcp.com (8.11.6/8.11.6) with ESMTP id g1LEm8672744 for ; Thu, 21 Feb 2002 07:48:09 -0700 (MST) Received: from localhost (deichert@localhost) by inago.swcp.com (8.8.7/8.8.7) with ESMTP id HAA13647 for ; Thu, 21 Feb 2002 07:48:08 -0700 (MST) X-Authentication-Warning: inago.swcp.com: deichert owned process doing -bs Date: Thu, 21 Feb 2002 07:48:08 -0700 (MST) From: Diana Eichert X-Sender: deichert@inago.swcp.com To: freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: FreeBSD and clustering In-Reply-To: <20020221144213.GD15365@hopi.hostsharing.net> Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org > > I'd like to know if there is a resource for, or documentation on, > > clustering for freebsd. Does > > freebsd have clustering capability and where can I learn more about it? Purdue University created a cluster on the cheap using FreeBSD: http://acme.ecn.purdue.edu/ quote from the site: "All of the computers are running the FreeBSD operating system, a free operating system that offers robust features, excellent performance and high reliability. FreeBSD is a state-of-the-art operating system for computers based on either Intel or DEC Alpha processors. The cluster is coordinated by one of the two major publically-available distributed system control programs called Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM). PVM runs on FreeBSD and allows an application program to be oblivious to most of the issues related to operating in a parallel computing environment. PVM software handles message routing, data conversion, and task scheduling." hope this helps, oh yeah, this is really not a freebsd-isp question To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isp" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isp Thu Feb 21 7:15:36 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Received: from mail.teligent.se (mail.teligent.se [212.209.126.130]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 791EE37B400 for ; Thu, 21 Feb 2002 07:15:32 -0800 (PST) Received: from senywts01 (senywts01.teligent.se [172.18.11.4]) by mail.teligent.se (8.11.1/8.11.1) with SMTP id g1LF8Sk09263 for ; Thu, 21 Feb 2002 16:08:28 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from jakob.alvermark@teligent.se) Message-ID: <000701c1baea$d45be3b0$040b12ac@teligent.se> From: "Jakob Alvermark" To: References: <005301c1bac7$70809de0$040b12ac@teligent.se> <1014293987.3c74e5e3c21d4@webmail.emre.de> Subject: Re: backups Date: Thu, 21 Feb 2002 16:17:08 +0100 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.50.4133.2400 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.50.4133.2400 Sender: owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hi again My understanding is that the FreeBSD client is pretty much current, it's just a couple of weeks since I got the news that version 6.0.2 is available for FreeBSD. I installed Apache from ports and took the defaults. I don't know if this is actually part of mod_rewrite or part of the base Apache install but it works for me. I included this "RedirectPermanent" line in a virtual host container: ServerAdmin admin@mykitchentable.net ServerName www.mykitchentable.net ErrorLog /var/log/error.log CustomLog /var/log/access.log common RedirectPermanent / http://mykitchentable.net:8080 Hopefully this will work for you. Odd. I have sendmail 8.9.3 running on 3.5 S. Lately (month or so), sending mail via that server is pretty slow (the initial connection). The problem is that the initial connection takes 7-10 seconds before connecting (sendmail actually accepting the mail), then everything hums along fine (once the connection is acknowledged, it zips along nicely). More Details: -This machine typically has a load of < .10 (single processor) -top shows it sitting idle mostly -sendmail.cf is mostly a stock variety (out of the box) - only additions are procmail, pop before smtp(sourceforge), and rbl(ordb) -if I telnet to port 25, sockstat on the machine shows the existing connection as the remote telnet waits the 7-10 seconds (so it appears not to be a network delay) -I can ssh just fine with no delay (so it's likely not a DNS issue?) -traceroutes to the box consistently show less than ~110 ms (it get that slow when i hit qwest - not to slam them) -I have flushed the queue and HUP'd it with no change in performance I am cornfused and seek enlightenment. I appreciate any suggestions. Seek enlightenment in the corner of host resolving, reverse dns. Slow connections are useally caused by a host being unable to lookup hostnames. The agent is simple, just install it and run it. That's all. Good luck, we have had serious serious problems with other backup solutions. I have a new Poweredge 350 which seems to be working fine, apart from this oddity: atapci0: port 0xffa0-0xffaf at device 7.1 on pci0 [...] ad0: 38146MB [77504/16/63] at ata0-master UDMA33 FreeBSD is reporting the controller as ATA33 capable only. The ata(4) man page says this is its maximum speed, and a web search for 'Intel PIIX4' shows this appears to be correct. What I am _hoping_ is happening is that the chipset in this server is backward compatible with the PIIX4, and FreeBSD is not properly detecting the native chipset. I find it hard to believe that a brand new server shipped with a 7200RPM ATA100 drive would have a controller limited to ATA33 only? It may sound like I'm niggling but as I often do HD image backups it is relevant; even the older 5400RPM ATA66 drives can saturate the ATA33 controller on my other server (31-32Mbytes/sec). Thanks in advance for any help... Since I'm new to freeBSD, can If the machine hangs for no apparent reason, it's usually not software related but rather a hardware fault. Perhaps pull the machine out and run it on your desk for a while (if practical) and see if perhaps the CPU fan stops spinning or there is anything that seems to hot inside. Also, what might be usefull, is to set up a log which catches everything for a while. To do this, add the following to your syslog.conf: *.* /var/log/everything and then touch the file /var/log/everything so it exists. If the machine then crashes, go and see what the last message was (if there was one that's maybe related). Another thing you could try would be to turn try turn off power management in the machine's bios.
