There is no native port of the JDK for FreeBSD Alpha. There probably isn't a lot of work required _if_ you know some Alpha assembly, but noone has had time or has stepped up to the plate to do this as yet. I believe Compaq are the only ones who have a JDK for the Alpha, it may work under OSF1 emulation, but I couldn't be sure. There was a Linux port for a while, but it has pretty much died. -- Greg Lewis Email : glewis@eyesbeyond.com Eyes Beyond Phone : (801) 796 6999 Information Technology Web : http://www.eyesbeyond.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Tue Jan 1 16:49:35 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mgr2.xmission.com (mgr2.xmission.com [198.60.22.202]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 91E0E37B41D for ; Tue, 1 Jan 2002 16:49:33 -0800 (PST) Received: from [207.135.128.145] (helo=misty.eyesbeyond.com) by mgr2.xmission.com with esmtp (Exim 3.22 #1) id 16LZb2-000157-00; Tue, 01 Jan 2002 17:49:32 -0700 Received: (from glewis@localhost) by misty.eyesbeyond.com (8.11.6/8.11.6) id g020nSZ13552; Wed, 2 Jan 2002 11:19:28 +1030 (CST) (envelope-from glewis) Date: Wed, 2 Jan 2002 11:19:28 +1030 From: Greg Lewis To: Santosh Balakrishnan Cc: freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Hotspot port to BSD Message-ID: <20020102111928.B12964@misty.eyesbeyond.com> References: <004601c1921f$a35ce460$020aa8c0@shiva> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.2.5i In-Reply-To: <004601c1921f$a35ce460$020aa8c0@shiva>; from santoshb@pacbell.net on Mon, Dec 31, 2001 at 09:21:50AM -0800 Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On Mon, Dec 31, 2001 at 09:21:50AM -0800, Santosh Balakrishnan wrote: > I would like to contribute to porting of Hotspot to BSD. I have started working on it, and I have the make files set up and have started working on the source files. What is really needed is a porting document so you know what way they expect to see the header files set up, but so far I have been able to puzzle it out. I was held up starting work on it for several weeks due to Jury Duty and the holidays... Bill H. also mentioned that he had done some work on it. /Joe To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Wed Jan 2 9:11:44 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from c014.snv.cp.net (c014-h006.c014.snv.cp.net [209.228.35.80]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 6694537B416 for ; Wed, 2 Jan 2002 09:11:41 -0800 (PST) Received: (cpmta 9677 invoked from network); 2 Jan 2002 09:11:41 -0800 Date: 2 Jan 2002 09:11:41 -0800 Message-ID: <20020102171141.9676.cpmta@c014.snv.cp.net> X-Sent: 2 Jan 2002 17:11:41 GMT Received: from [217.78.65.168] by mail.justice.com with HTTP; 02 Jan 2002 09:11:41 PST Content-Type: text/plain Content-Disposition: inline Mime-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org From: deji ajayi X-Mailer: Web Mail 3.9.3.5 X-Sent-From: segunpaul@justice.com Subject: free bsd java Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hi, Pls,i am a lover of java.I request that you send me a free java tutorial textbook or cd-rom .Thank you. yours sincerely, Segun sadiq. _________________________________________________ FindLaw - Free Case Law, Jobs, Library, Community http://www.FindLaw.com Get your FREE @JUSTICE.COM email! http://mail.Justice.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Wed Jan 2 9:24:11 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from ns.yogotech.com (ns.yogotech.com [206.127.123.66]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 314E237B416 for ; Wed, 2 Jan 2002 09:24:05 -0800 (PST) Received: from caddis.yogotech.com (caddis.yogotech.com [206.127.123.130]) by ns.yogotech.com (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id KAA23968; Wed, 2 Jan 2002 10:23:53 -0700 (MST) (envelope-from nate@yogotech.com) Received: (from nate@localhost) by caddis.yogotech.com (8.11.6/8.11.6) id g02HNqI57246; Wed, 2 Jan 2002 10:23:52 -0700 (MST) (envelope-from nate) From: Nate Williams MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Message-ID: <15411.16936.647666.347903@caddis.yogotech.com> Date: Wed, 2 Jan 2002 10:23:52 -0700 To: Greg Lewis Cc: al011757 , freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Alpha Java freebsd In-Reply-To: <20020102111811.A12964@misty.eyesbeyond.com> References: <20020102111811.A12964@misty.eyesbeyond.com> X-Mailer: VM 6.96 under 21.1 (patch 14) "Cuyahoga Valley" XEmacs Lucid Reply-To: nate@yogotech.com (Nate Williams) Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org > > Hello , I am running freeBSD 4.4 on an Alpha machine , and I would like to install java > > but when I try to make the > > cd /usr/ports/java > > make > > jdk-1.1.8. is only for i386, and you are running alpha. > > > > is there an easy way to install it ? > > There is no native port of the JDK for FreeBSD Alpha. It does, albeit *very* slowly. (My 486 running Java outruns the Alpha by a large margin). You *must* have a JIT for things to work even moderately acceptable. Compaq donated an Alpha for the port (sitting next to me), so if there is both ability and interest, I can make accounts available on the box for the porting effort. The Compaq JVM can be used to bootstrap a native FreeBSD effort, if so desired. I think it is a mistake to base things on the linux port. In all of my experience with various linux ports, they have introduced more problems into the porting process than they have solved. I believe that the Solaris port is cleaner and closer to standard than any linux port ever will be. Of course, that is just my opinion. I am proceeding based on the Solaris port. I had to fix one obvious problem in the make files (buildATree.make used the wrong quoting convention) and am currently working on the os/bsd/vm directory. Anyone who knows anything about shell scripting would have found the error in buildATree.make and fixed it instead of inventing a whole new way to do it as the linux folk felt compelled to do. Just one example of gratuitous changes that linux porting induces. OK, enough ranting. Back to work. /Joe To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Thu Jan 3 13:20:56 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from pinky.us.net (pinky.us.net [216.181.215.124]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1476037B417 for ; Thu, 3 Jan 2002 13:20:33 -0800 (PST) Received: (qmail 12772 invoked from network); 3 Jan 2002 21:20:31 -0000 Received: from pinky.us.net ([216.181.215.124]) (envelope-sender ) by pinky.us.net (qmail-ldap-1.03) with SMTP for ; 3 Jan 2002 21:20:31 -0000 Date: Thu, 3 Jan 2002 16:20:29 -0500 (EST) From: Brian Skrab To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Subject: Playing audio with Java (JDK 1.3.1)??? Here is the source code that I'm using: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- import java.io.*; import java.applet.*; public class SoundTest { public static void main(String[] argv) { try { File file = new File(argv[0]); AudioClip clip = Applet.newAudioClip(file.toURL()); clip.play(); } catch(Exception ex) { ex.printStackTrace(); } } } ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Running the code results in no sound, and the jvm sitting at about 12% CPU usage until I ^C it. Is there another way to play an audio clip that I should try? Is the JDK capable of playing audio clips at all? Does the WAV file have to be in any particular format? I used the example (correctly encoded) WAV file provided on Sun's JavaSound Tutorial site. Any hints, pointers, or working example code will be much appreciated. Here is the source code that I'm using: I've no idea who has tested playing sound other than you, but as the person who munged in the sound code from 1.2.2, I can tell you that this is the first time I've heard from someone who has tested the code under 1.3.1. I can also tell you that I have no sound card, nor any familiarity with how sound playing works. However, I'm told that the sound support did partially work in 1.2.2 (Rob Furphy got it to that stage). I believe that it did play some formats but not others. So, I'd try another format :). I would guess that your chances of JavaSound stuff working well is pretty limited unless someone (with a sound card preferably :) steps up in terms of debugging it. The last time I munged with the sound code was back in 1.2.2 days (a year or more ago I think). I remember that .au and .mid files worked, and maybe .rmf. I think I remember .wav and .aiff files not working. There is a demo in the 1.2.2 jdk tree which allowed me to test all the various formats easily but it has since changed in 1.3.1 and 1.4.0 to not have the tab page for playing the sound files. The demo I'm talking about is in /demo/jfc/Java2D. (Check the "Mix" tab page) There are some low level calls being made by the JVM to the sound hardware which don't properly initialize the sound card for the file formats which don't work. Long ago I left some initial debugging messages in the source to try to discover what was wrong but I don't know if they're stiil there or if I was even on the right track to fixing the JVM. I think sound support is being moved more to the JMF api. Perhaps there is where you'll find good example programs for how playing sound is supposed to be done going forward (jdk1.3.1, jdk1.4.0 and beyond) like jmstudio.
