I'm clueless when it comes to embedded devices, and I'd like to make sure they work for what I had in mind before I place the order. What FreeBSD version are you running on them? 4.5-RELEASE? Is the hardware completely supported? Are there any quirks I should be aware of? Do you use a regular HD, or CF for storage? Have you done any network throughput/forwarding benchmarks on them? Thanks a lot! I hope this hasn't been asked before. I want to find small motherboard (266-500Mhz) that has three embedded NIC's, a serial interface (or embedded VGA), support for Flash DOM and at least 32MB of onboard RAM, and most importantly that will run FreeBSD. What I've currently been looking at is the AR-B1550 on micropower.nl (unfortunately with no serial ports or VGA), but is basically exactly what we want. An updated version is at: http://www.acrosser.com/products/ar-b1550.htm This is exactly what we want and is the perfect size. Unfortunately whether or not FreeBSD is compatible with this is another question. I wonder if anyone has any experience with these boards, or if anyone has any alternative suggestions for motherboards which fit my criteria above. Basically what I'm trying to build is an embedded firewall solution and FreeBSD with ipfw/ipf is perfect for my needs. I'd prefer not to have to down the Linux route, but I need guarantees I can get FreeBSD working on these, or another alternative. You might check out the the net4501 from Soekris Engineering (www.soekris.com). The CPU isn't as fast as you spec, but it forwards at nearly line speed anyway and has support for hardare crypto via PCI and mini-PCI sockets. It also uses CF instead of Flash DOM, but CF is easier to work and cheaper. -- Brooks --=20 Any statement of the form "X is the one, true Y" is FALSE. Are there any quirks I should be aware of? We can't seem to get the Geode ATA controller to do DMA, although according to spec it does DMA-33: it stays in PIO4, alas. Do you use a regular HD, or CF for storage? Both ;-) Have you done any network throughput/forwarding benchmarks on them? I once measured 700kbps throughput, AFAIR.
