Done. I've worked on it some more. I think I've caught all the areas in the code that touch or read limits. The new patch is up at: http://home.pacbell.net/makonnen/limits.tar.gz The tarball contains three patches. The first one adds the limit locking infrastructure to the kernel, the second one locks down all references to limits. If the limit structure is being modified or the code requires a stable reference over several lines of code, the locks both the proc and limit. If the code just dereferences the limit structure, then it just locks the proc structure. The third patch removes giant from the relevant code. However, I left it in place in some instances because I was not sure whether the code still required it or not. Hello everyone !

 I recently came across a acer = altos 9100b,=20 dual PII-400 with 1G ram. I've decided to install FreeBSD 4.6 = (ISO) on it=20 to be my main server. This is not my first FreeBSD install but it is the = first=20 on a multi-processors machine. I compiled a new kernel ( un-commented = both SMP=20 options, config, make, make install ) but now it refuses to boot. = If I boot=20 with kernel.old it is ok ( dmesg ( boot -v ) and mptable at = end of=20 message). With the SMP-kernel, just after the line that says: "Waiting = 15=20 seconds for SCSI devices to settle" I get the following = lines:

SMP: AP CPU #1 Launched!
SMP: CPU1 = apic_initialize();
     lint0: = 0x00010700 lint1:=20 0x00010400 TPR: 0x00000010 SVR: 0x0000001ff

and then the kernel deadlocks and I = have to=20 power-cycle it to try to boot again. ( ctrl-alt-del or ^D = or ^C does=20 nothing)

I tried some time to use a Fore board (but it was with 4.2 or 4.2), and I could not get them to work. there were also messages about a rewrite of the hfa driver under current (the messages hinted to a malfunction of the hfa driver, IIRC). you may find these messages on the archives (or have a look at the commit logs for the hfa driver under current) Happy hacking TfH To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-smp" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-smp Wed Jul 24 19:29:33 2002 Delivered-To: freebsd-smp@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.FreeBSD.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D286637B400 for ; Wed, 24 Jul 2002 19:29:32 -0700 (PDT) Received: from tspace.ru (ns.tspace.ru [217.106.36.67]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E766643E6A for ; Wed, 24 Jul 2002 19:29:30 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from fsmp@tspace.ru) Received: from michael.tspace.ru (michael.tspace.ru [217.106.39.2]) by tspace.ru (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id JAA25203 for ; Thu, 25 Jul 2002 09:29:28 +0700 (NOVST) (envelope-from fsmp@tspace.ru) Date: Thu, 25 Jul 2002 09:30:44 +0700 From: fsmp X-Mailer: The Bat!
