On Solaris for instance, the native cc compiler is junk, so you typically have to set CC=gcc before running configure, or with some configure options. Your best bet is to see if you can figure out what its trying to run to determine this step, determine why it doesn't work (your path, what compiler it found and is trying to use, invalid parameters, etc.), and then either ask it nicely to use a better choice, or hack the script to use a better choice. -B > I have this problem that I think is related to the SPARC port of > FreeBSD, so I'm not sending this message to -misc. > > When configuring Berkeley DB 4.1.24 (by SleepyCat Software) I get > this error: > > checking for C compiler default output... configure: error: C > compiler cannot create executables > > Well, any ideas? > > I need a Berkeley DB implementation for INN 2.3.3. gdbm also doesn't > work. > > -- > Al. Search in the current@ mailing list archive, I posted a patch to fix this (the subject is something like "patch to fix ipfw2 on sparc64"). It should fix the warnings and the panics you would have if you attempted to use ipfw2 as is (you can't compile it in the kernel because of the -Werror flag, but you could load it as a module). You can get a dual 300mhz ultra 60 on ebay for $900-1000 USD. Mine does a make -j 8 buildworld in just over 2 hours with some strategic stuff turned off in make.conf (profiled libs, objective c, fortran). Thu Oct 24 15:10:18 GMT 2002 7546.53 real 10633.14 user 1818.80 sys Search for "sun ultra" on ebay; I got mine from paladintech. Ultra 10s are cheaper but more PC class, my 300mhz does a full buildworld in about 5 hours last time I timed it. Ultra 2 is probably the best value, but we don't support the builtin scsi controller yet. You can also get various new machines on sun.com for around $1000 USD, IIRC a 500mhz blade 100 does a buildworld in around 2-3 hours. I got my ultra 30 on ebay for $250..it's just (still) missing a disk. You can find good bargains if you're willing to be patient and hunt for them. I pointed out this breakage a day or two ago. The breakage has since been expanded by breaking most of the messengers, but but pkg_install until you hit it. I don't know why they released this and not the UltraSPARC III proper manual, its like sun denies that it exists at all. You'll notice that there's a gap in the %ver numbering where USIII should be. A lot of stuff is mentioned but not really documented, and a lot of stuff is missing. This also doesn't help with the fact that there is no documentation available for the schizo pci bridge, which is needed to even begin to probe the pci bus on these machines. From: John Polstra To: sparc@freebsd.org Subject: Is the sparc64 stack segment executable? Sender: owner-freebsd-sparc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Is the stack segment on FreeBSD/sparc64 executable? Here's the background. In my continuing quest to get CVSup running on that platform, I'm now dealing with a problem involving indirect calls to nested functions. As you may or may not know, a nested function can access the locals of surrounding functions by means of the so-called static link, which is a pointer to a surrounding function's stack frame. To set up the static link properly when indirect calls are involved, gcc builds a trampoline on the stack and passes the address of the trampoline instead of the actual nested function. The trampoline is a tiny bit of code which sets the static link properly and then jumps to the target function. The reason it is done this way is because the address of a trampoline has the same shape as the address of a function, avoiding the need to handle a bunch of special cases. Anyway, ... this is dying with a bus error on FreeBSD/sparc64 when it tries to execute the very first instruction that is on the stack. Below I will append an example of a C program using gcc's nested function extension. It works on i386 and on Alpha, but not on Sparc64. This is just for illustration, so don't groan at me about using gcc extensions. Remember, it's Modula-3 I'm trying to fix, not a C program. Next question: Assuming the stack is not executable by default, would it work for the application to make it executable using mprotect? I noticed that GCC tries to arrange that on certain Sparc platforms.
