I am attempting to install from a "DOS partition" using the two boot floppies, but my USB keyboard is not recognized by the kernel, so I can't confirm the choices once the install GUI appears. My computer is a Dell Dimension (rather common these days) and my BIOS includes a "USB emulation" setting, but it doesn't matter what it is set to--it still doesn't work. I am finding this rather frustrating, considering USB keyboards are the standard on new PCs, and they really should be supported in the installation kernel of a modern OS. Are there any (undocumented) options that I am missing during the boot from the install floppies? Also, are there any message boards, mailing lists, etc. devoted to the installation process? There was a PR, a while ago: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=3D43345 But now that I've installed -CURRENT, there no problem... with the ATA controller at least :) But I know that even 5.0-p4 does not allow me to boot (I have a shuttle barebone with a SiS 651 chipset). Like you, I would like a solution to fix this in a RELENG branch of FreeBSD but I am sorry to say I can't contribute myself (no time and probably not enough competence...). Anyway, have a look at the PR, maybe it's a good start if you can't afford -CURRENT. We have some similar M/Bs from SuperMicro (same chipset and same GigE NICs). General M/B performance is good. The GigE is not too pleasure. In my design experience, the Tx interrupt can only be generated after Tx queue is empty. The Tx interrupt is generated immediately if TIDV = 0, or wait for TIDV * 1.024 us. If the driver can feed the device enough data (also recycling the used buffers), Tx interrupt should never happen. This is different from Rx interrupt. Two things can happen here, either the kernel does not provide enough data to the NIC, or the NIC generates interrupts anyway after TIDV regardless if the data queue is not empty. If it is the later case, I would blame Intel. We also have the profermance issue on their 10Gb/s NIC, and we are still investigating what is the problem. -Jin From owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Tue May 6 11:42:48 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 66ECC37B401 for ; Tue, 6 May 2003 11:42:48 -0700 (PDT) Received: from mail.via.net (mail.via.net [209.81.9.12]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9FD0F43F85 for ; Tue, 6 May 2003 11:42:45 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from joe@via.net) Received: from [209.81.27.5] (host5.islandsw.com [209.81.27.5] (may be forged)) by mail.via.net (8.12.8/8.12.7) with ESMTP id h46If07D021963; Tue, 6 May 2003 11:41:00 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from joe@via.net) User-Agent: Microsoft-Entourage/10.1.1.2418 Date: Tue, 06 May 2003 11:42:39 -0700 From: joe mcguckin To: "Jin Guojun [NCS]" , "Simon L. It would be nice to know exactly what you're seeing from this. However, I did have some significant problems with my Gateway 450L about at this point when I was trying to install, so I'll go out on a limb and speculate that this is the same problem (a page fault in the PCI code was what I was dealing with). This problem, incidentally, has nothing to do with the IDE controller (Intel 82801CAM, which appears to be some kind of unified bus control chip, is supported on my system). Maybe someone else can fill me in as to why, but the Gateway requires a tweak to the kernel environment in order to boot. The following assignment needs to be made: hw.pci.allow_unsupported_io_range="1" To do this, when you are booting the install disk, and it says "Press [ENTER] to boot immediately, any other key for command prompt", press another key (space works nicely). Then, run the following commands: set hw.pci.allow_unsupported_io_range="1" boot The machine will then (hopefully) boot (I never had any problems after figuring this out). This must be repeated each bootup; once you have the system installed and running, put the following at the top of your /boot/loader.conf: hw.pci.allow_unsupported_io_range="1" and the tweak will be applied automatically. It should then boot and operate properly. Is this a new Centrino-based machine? I don't know much about Centrino, but it's possible there are issues with FreeBSD support for that architecture. Either that, or, in cheapening up the 400x (IIRC, it's a lower-end machine than the 450), they put in some chips that FreeBSD doesn't like. Unfortunately, it sounds like you probably can't very easily get a copy of your kernel messages to send. Unless one of the other list readers tell you how to capture that with a non-functional system. -Mike From owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Wed May 7 12:25:55 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A65DF37B401 for ; Wed, 7 May 2003 12:25:55 -0700 (PDT) Received: from smtp-out.comcast.net (smtp-out.comcast.net [24.153.64.116]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0E88E43F93 for ; Wed, 7 May 2003 12:25:55 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from jshamlet@comcast.net) Received: from alexandria (bgp01561290bgs.gambrl01.md.comcast.net [68.50.33.221]) by mtaout04.icomcast.net (iPlanet Messaging Server 5.2 HotFix 1.14 (built Mar 18 2003)) with ESMTP id <0HEJ00AVK79ER0@mtaout04.icomcast.net> for freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org; Wed, 07 May 2003 15:24:50 -0400 (EDT) Date: Wed, 07 May 2003 15:24:31 -0400 (EDT) From: "J. I also installed a SIIG low-profile PCI-4S multi-port serial card (LP-P40011) to handle the control portion. Everything works great - I've already migrated all of the control software over to the new machine, but I am getting a *LOT* of silo overflow errors in the syslog. Even 2400 baud (the SmartUPS) is resulting in these. Since this is a control system, I am getting hundreds of messages. I've managed to reduce this a bit by putting the thermostat, and a CM17A (bottlerocket), on the built-in COM port - but the UPS and CM11A are still generating a large number of messages. I did read in the puc manpage that if you get these, add in the option for fast interrupts. I did this, and am still getting the silo errors. It also mentioned that PCI interrupt sharing would be a problem - but nothing appears to be sharing that interrupt (irq 12) - at least in the dmesg. Now, this machine is no speed demon, but it should be fast enough to handle a PCI serial card. Integer speed is fairly quick, and it can even handle xdm with no problems.
