The pcm driver has a knack for supporting all sorts of AC'97 devices, even ones unlisted as officially supported. If that fails, post the dmesg from boot when the pcm module tries to load. As for the modem, good luck. Last I checked that's a pure winmodem, no hardware, just a codec and a driver. I've seen some reports about people getting the HSP56 MR working in linux, but nothing as of yet for FreeBSD. I followed the instructions but I found that there is very poor sound. I played some wave it just comes out with distortion and low volume. That is what typically causes the "unknown: can't assign resources" error messages. Try taking it out of the kernel config and giving things another go. If you still get the line in dmesg about pcm0 being an unknown ac97 codec, yes, I'm afraid it may not be fully supported yet. David Yucht On Tue, 8 Jul 2003, Dennis wrote: > Thanks for your help! In my neverending series of "IDE is hurting me plenty", I ask the following question: "Is using the very same CDROM drive through atapicam more reliable than using it with straight atapicd?" The answer, experimentally at least, is a resounding, "Yes!" With my hardware (VIA 82C686 ATA66 controller, Liteon 24x burner, but the rest is SCSI), running FreeBSD 4.8, I get occasional errors running the burner at UDMA33: acd0: READ_BIG - HARDWARE ERROR asc=0x08 ascq=0x03 error=0x00 Interestingly, when I use the burner via the scsi device node, I never get errors. I've just done some mind numbing test reads of (just at random) disk one of the FreeBSD 4.0 install cds. The cam driver read the disk with no errors 10 times. The atapi driver read the disk successfully 5 times and failed 5 times. Just remember, it's the same hardware in the same machine. My copy of the ATAPI standard says the driver should retry when it receives the asc/ascq 0x08/0x03 (logical unit communication crc error). As far as I can tell, the atapi cd driver does not do this. The scsi cd driver retries 4 times, I believe. I think this makes all the difference. Is there any reason why the atapi cd driver does not retry in this case? Cheers, Stephen. PS The standard also suggests falling back 1 step at a time on persistent DMA CRC errors, ie 100 -> 66 -> 33 etc before dropping back to PIO. This shouldn't be too hard either, eh? I'd highly recommend checking your memory first. Download a program called Memtest86 from memtest86.com; it's a GPLed app that fits on a floppy and tests every bit of memory several times. If there's a problem, it will find it. Occasionally it's found problems with memory other diagnostic apps have missed. Just be warned a good check run may take all day (several loops through the 11 tests). Now, if it does detect a problem, don't flip out, just play with your memory settings in bios first and slow things down, then retest. If it still says there's an issue, try juggling slots and retest. If there's _still_ an issue, well, you've got a bad module. Being the curious type, that usually means to me that the module should be isolated and placed in another system just to be sure it's not some goofy incompatibility with the motherboard. Oh, and before I forget, subsequent tests after you find an error don't need to be run all day, a good half hour or hour for one pass of all tests is plenty. Provided memory tests out fine, get the correct diagnostics tools from WD and check you disks. I've got a feeling it is memory, though. (I have a dual P3 with the ServerWorks chipset as well) So, I would be interested in getting this to work as well. Although Linux implements this stuff partly in the kernel; in theory, you could write a userland app to read/write the data from the LM78 subsystem - if you knew where it was (which should be easy), what was hooked up, and how it was hooked up. That's the rub on ServerWorks boards. Apparently, they make you sign an NDA before they will give you any details at all. Also, FreeBSD has a lousy track record of supporting LM78 based hardware in general. I have four systems, each with different LM78 monitoring systems, and programs like healthd, etc. can't manage any of them. (they include the file server, a fairly standard Abit P4 system, a VIA EPIA system, and an old K6-2 system) > Hello freebsd-hardware, > > Hi, > > I've been running into a few overheating problems, and finally after > replacing the parts...my system is functional once again. > > Now, I want to be able to monitor CPU/MB/etc temperature, and I > can't really find anything relevant after searching the list, or on > google. I don't like them as much as the Northgates. They have some funny glitches which turn on the CapsLock function under some circumstances, and despite what they say, they don't feel as good as the Northgate. They're also louder, and they don't have a version with a diamond shaped cursor key pad, just the inverted T. But apart from that, they're not bad keyboards.
