I had no chance yet to try with a make that uses fork() instead of vfork(). harti -- harti brandt, http://www.fokus.fraunhofer.de/research/cc/cats/employees/hartmut.brandt/private brandt@fokus.fraunhofer.de, harti@freebsd.org From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jul 21 00:13:51 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 93A3C37B401; Mon, 21 Jul 2003 00:13:51 -0700 (PDT) Received: from storm.FreeBSD.org.uk (storm.FreeBSD.org.uk [194.242.157.42]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 91FD143F93; Mon, 21 Jul 2003 00:13:50 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from mark@grondar.org) Received: from storm.FreeBSD.org.uk (Ugrondar@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by storm.FreeBSD.org.uk (8.12.9/8.12.9) with ESMTP id h6L7DnPh091118; Mon, 21 Jul 2003 08:13:49 +0100 (BST) (envelope-from mark@grondar.org) Received: (from Ugrondar@localhost)h6L7DnBW091117; Mon, 21 Jul 2003 08:13:49 +0100 (BST) X-Authentication-Warning: storm.FreeBSD.org.uk: Ugrondar set sender to mark@grondar.org using -f Received: from grondar.org (localhost [127.0.0.1])h6L7DaZ2046093; Mon, 21 Jul 2003 08:13:37 +0100 (BST) (envelope-from mark@grondar.org) From: Mark Murray Message-Id: <200307210713.h6L7DaZ2046093@grimreaper.grondar.org> To: Peter Wemm In-Reply-To: Your message of "Sun, 20 Jul 2003 15:23:43 PDT." <20030720222343.98A992A7EA@canning.wemm.org> Date: Mon, 21 Jul 2003 08:13:36 +0100 Sender: mark@grondar.org X-Spam-Status: No, hits=0.2 required=5.0 tests=EMAIL_ATTRIBUTION,FROM_NO_LOWER,IN_REP_TO, QUOTED_EMAIL_TEXT,REPLY_WITH_QUOTES version=2.55 X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 2.55 (1.174.2.19-2003-05-19-exp) cc: Tinderbox cc: current@freebsd.org cc: i386@freebsd.org Subject: Re: [-CURRENT tinderbox] failure on i386/i386 X-BeenThere: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: I386-specific issues for FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 21 Jul 2003 07:13:51 -0000 Peter Wemm writes: > Tinderbox wrote: > > > gzip -cn /vol/vol0/users/des/tinderbox/CURRENT/i386/i386/src/lib/libc/nls/c > at > gets.3 > catgets.3.gz > > Segmentation fault (core dumped) > > *** Error code 139 > > These false alarms are wearing a bit thin. For a minute I had a horrible thought that it might have been a consequence of the lazy switch stuff. But the kernel on cueball predates the turn-on and doesn't have the options enabled. It's pretty evil, too. It makes all sorts of system calls that it ought not to be making (i.e. it's permitted to call execve(2) or _exit(2), and that's all, period: all other system calls have undefined behaviour, according to the standards). It's really *very* tempting to set up a "vfork(2) system call table" that has only those two system calls in it, and returns "ENOSYS" for everything else, to catch the idiots who think that "vfork() is just like fork(), only faster". Most likely, it's hitting a race in dup2(2) or write(2) or close(2) or one of the other system calls it calls between the vfork(2) and the execve(2)/_exit(2). -- Terry From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jul 22 00:27:52 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id F2D8837B401; Tue, 22 Jul 2003 00:27:51 -0700 (PDT) Received: from cueball.rtp.FreeBSD.org (cueball.rtp.FreeBSD.org [192.58.184.37]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 166E643F75; Tue, 22 Jul 2003 00:27:51 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from des+tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: from cueball.rtp.FreeBSD.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) h6M7Ros8066954; Tue, 22 Jul 2003 03:27:50 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from des+tinderbox@freebsd.org) Received: (from des@localhost) by cueball.rtp.FreeBSD.org (8.12.9/8.12.9/Submit) id h6M7RoqF066953; Tue, 22 Jul 2003 07:27:50 GMT Date: Tue, 22 Jul 2003 07:27:50 GMT Message-Id: <200307220727.h6M7RoqF066953@cueball.rtp.FreeBSD.org> X-Authentication-Warning: cueball.rtp.FreeBSD.org: des set sender to Tinderbox using -f Sender: Tinderbox From: Tinderbox To: current@freebsd.org, i386@freebsd.org Precedence: bulk Subject: [-CURRENT tinderbox] failure on i386/i386 X-BeenThere: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 List-Id: I386-specific issues for FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 22 Jul 2003 07:27:52 -0000 TB --- 2003-07-22 06:13:03 - starting CURRENT tinderbox run for i386/i386 TB --- 2003-07-22 06:13:03 - checking out the source tree TB --- cd /home/des/tinderbox/CURRENT/i386/i386 TB --- /usr/bin/cvs -f -R -q -d/home/ncvs update -Pd -A src TB --- 2003-07-22 06:15:09 - building world TB --- cd /home/des/tinderbox/CURRENT/i386/i386/src TB --- /usr/bin/make -B buildworld >>> Rebuilding the temporary build tree >>> stage 1: legacy release compatibility shims >>> stage 1: bootstrap tools >>> stage 2: cleaning up the object tree >>> stage 2: rebuilding the object tree >>> stage 2: build tools >>> stage 3: cross tools >>> stage 4: populating /home/des/tinderbox/CURRENT/i386/i386/obj/vol/vol0/users/des/tinderbox/CURRENT/i386/i386/src/i386/usr/include >>> stage 4: building libraries >>> stage 4: make dependencies >>> stage 4: building everything.. I observed the same symptom on 5.1-CURRENT (yesterday) and 5.1-RELEASE. "acpiconf -s 3" suspends the machine. But, when it's resumed, the LCD display remains blank. The keyboard is operational so that I can reboot the machine by typing blindly. Also, lid-close after acpiconf -s 3 mysteriously resumes the system. "acpiconf -s 1" produces the following error; it does not suspend. acpi0: AcpiGetSleepTypeData failed - AE_NOT_FOUND dmesg, acpidump, sysctl hw.acpi and pciconf -lv output follows. dmesg output -------------------------------------------------------- Copyright (c) 1992-2003 The FreeBSD Project.
