If you want to enlarge any of the partitions, you can boot in single user mode, create the partitions on the new disks and then do a dump/restore combo to transfer the files to the new disk. -- Ted Cabeen http://www.pobox.com/~secabeen ted@impulse.net Check Website or Keyserver for PGP/GPG Key BA0349D2 secabeen@pobox.com "I have taken all knowledge to be my province." -F. If you want to 'clone' a stack of machines, you can build one up as you want it, and then just use dd in a 3rd machine.. ie, boot off disk 0, clone disk 1 to disk 2. dd if=/dev/rad1 of=/dev/rad2 You may find that specifying a block size (eg bs=1m) helps to increase speed. systat -vmstat will show you how many MB/sec the disks are doing. --Shaun Adrian Gonzalez wrote: > > Is there anything out there that resembles Symantec Ghost but works with > FreeBSD partitions? > > Basically I want to be able to transfer a FreeBSD installation from an > old hard drive to a new one without having to reinstall, reconfigure, etc. > > Thanks > > -Adrian > > > To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org > with "unsubscribe freebsd-isp" in the body of the message > To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isp" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isp Tue Feb 18 18: 7:21 2003 Delivered-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BB8F337B401 for ; Tue, 18 Feb 2003 18:07:18 -0800 (PST) Received: from yama.openaccess.org (ns1.openaccess.org [216.57.214.17]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 32A0743F85 for ; Tue, 18 Feb 2003 18:07:18 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from michael@staff.openaccess.org) Received: from [216.57.214.91] ([216.57.214.91]) by yama.openaccess.org (8.12.3/8.11.6) with ESMTP id h1J1vsg5001407; Tue, 18 Feb 2003 17:57:54 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from michael@staff.openaccess.org) User-Agent: Microsoft-Entourage/10.0.0.1309 Date: Tue, 18 Feb 2003 18:07:02 -0800 Subject: Re: Symantec Ghost-like app for UFS? If you want to enlarge any of the partitions, you can boot in single user mode, create the partitions on the new disks and then do a dump/restore combo to transfer the files to the new disk. -- Ted Cabeen http://www.pobox.com/~secabeen ted@impulse.net Check Website or Keyserver for PGP/GPG Key BA0349D2 secabeen@pobox.com "I have taken all knowledge to be my province." -F. The major point here is the p option which makes tar create the targets files with the same perms as the sources. > This is the way to do it if you are moving to a different sized disk > and want to change the paritition sizes. As we are talking about UFS: no it doesn't. Even on an empty disk and a file with a fraction of the size of the disk you will end up with "fragmented" blocks. UFS doesn't write the data as one large chunk, it "spreads" it all over the disk. If the previous filesystem switched to "optimize for space", there may be a little benefit for some files, but generally there's absolutely no need to "defragment" a UFS partition. But that would very probably leave copious messages in the logfiles, too. I have a WD1000JB myself, and I think they're great drives. I posted a longer soliquy on hard drive manufacturers recently. Anyway, it's more likely that you've got heating problems or maybe a flaky power supply. Check into those, and/or run something like memtest or cpuburn (from the ports). -Chuck To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isp" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isp Thu Feb 20 11:30: 9 2003 Delivered-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A0FCA37B401 for ; Thu, 20 Feb 2003 11:30:08 -0800 (PST) Received: from mercury.pathwaynet.com (mercury.pathwaynet.com [216.46.200.84]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id F102743F75 for ; Thu, 20 Feb 2003 11:30:07 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from sturdee@pathwaynet.com) Received: from sun.mikesweb.com ([216.46.200.114]) by mercury.pathwaynet.com with esmtp (Exim 4.10) id 18lwPI-000ISa-00 for freebsd-isp@freebsd.org; Thu, 20 Feb 2003 14:30:56 -0500 Date: Thu, 20 Feb 2003 14:30:36 -0500 (EST) From: Mike Sturdee X-X-Sender: sturdee@sun.mikesweb.com To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Subject: ldap_pam & fbsd Message-ID: <20030220142955.T14308@sun.mikesweb.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII X-Scanner: exiscan for exim4 (http://duncanthrax.net/exiscan/) *18lwPI-000ISa-00*F9Qu/6/XIlU* Sender: owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org What good is ldap_pam on FreeBSD if nss_ldap can't be used? -Mike To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isp" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isp Thu Feb 20 16:53:24 2003 Delivered-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2830937B401 for ; Thu, 20 Feb 2003 16:53:22 -0800 (PST) Received: from nlaredo.globalpc.net (nld2.globalpc.net [207.193.206.189]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E6A2743FA3 for ; Thu, 20 Feb 2003 16:53:18 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from adrianglz@globalpc.net) Received: from ds9.globalpc.net (ds9.globalpc.net [207.193.204.57]) by nlaredo.globalpc.net (8.12.6/8.12.6) with ESMTP id h1L0v2co064416; Thu, 20 Feb 2003 18:57:02 -0600 (CST) (envelope-from adrianglz@globalpc.net) Message-Id: <5.1.1.6.2.20030220183046.02d2f770@globalpc.net> X-Sender: adrianglz@globalpc.net X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Version 5.1.1 Date: Thu, 20 Feb 2003 18:51:51 -0600 To: Aravind Balasubramanian , Pierre-Luc =?iso-8859-1?Q?Lesp=E9rance?= , freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG From: Adrian Gonzalez Subject: Re: Symantec Ghost-like app for UFS? Short Answer: no Longer Answer : imo the FreeBSD 5.x branch isn't ready for production servers as of yet, there is still a lot of bugs that needs to be sorted out and fixed. You may want to read this URL, that has some explanation to what I mean : http://www.freebsd.org/releases/5.0R/early-adopter.html That said, theres some exciting features in FreeBSD 5.0 that I'm really looking forward to, and I might set up one of the servers that customers doesn't have direct access to and isn't mission critical with FreeBSD 5.0 to help out in testing, but until the 5-STABLE branch is release I'm not going to adopt my server park into RELENG_5. Not sure if this has been mentioned before, but sysinstall can be scripted. I'm about to try it myself, but from what I can tell, you edit/usr/src/release/sysinstall/install.cfg and then do a 'make release' in /usr/src/release....(someone more knowlegeble on this please chip in)... So what u end up with is CD1 (and optionally CD2) that usually ships as the distribution set... man release(7) should have more on this... For most applications in our business, it doesn't really pay off to stay on the bleeding edge. The only updates I generally do are security related. Heck, the only reason I moved between 2.2, 3.x, and 4.x, was that I was installing on new hardware. I still have a 3-STABLE box in production (486/66 that's being replaced with a K6-2/350 running 4-STABLE next week). I do already have a 5.0 test machine going (using it to work out a new mail system). So far it's doing just fine, though it's not in production yet, I'll wait until 5-STABLE (if I can complete my project by then, if not, then I'll go with 6-STABLE). -- Troy Settle Pulaski Networks http://www.psknet.com 540.994.4254 ~ 866.477.5638 Pulaski Chamber 2002 Small Business Of The Year > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG=20 > [mailto:owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG] On Behalf Of S=F8ren Klintrup > Sent: Friday, February 21, 2003 12:27 AM > To: freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG > Subject: Re: 5.0 Release...upgrade me servers now?? >=20 >=20 > tony wrote: > > Is anyone running 5.0 on their servers yet? > > Should I upgrade from 4.x to 5.0 now or wait? >=20 > Short Answer: no >=20 > Longer Answer : > imo the FreeBSD 5.x branch isn't ready for production servers=20 > as of yet, there is still a lot of bugs that needs to be=20 > sorted out and fixed. >=20 > You may want to read this URL, that has some explanation to=20 > what I mean : http://www.freebsd.org/releases/5.0R/early-adopter.html >=20 > That said, theres some exciting features in FreeBSD 5.0 that=20 > I'm really looking forward to, and I might set up one of the=20 > servers that customers doesn't have direct access to and=20 > isn't mission critical with FreeBSD 5.0 to help out in=20 > testing, but until the 5-STABLE branch is release I'm not=20 > going to adopt my server park into RELENG_5. >=20 > Regards, > S=F8ren Klintrup > Systems Administrator, EuroTrust Secure Hosting >=20 >=20 >=20 > To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org > with "unsubscribe freebsd-isp" in the body of the message >=20 >=20 To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isp" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isp Fri Feb 21 6: 9:21 2003 Delivered-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A927537B401 for ; Fri, 21 Feb 2003 06:09:19 -0800 (PST) Received: from ns1.via-net-works.net.ar (ns1.via-net-works.net.ar [200.10.100.10]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8FCF743F85 for ; Fri, 21 Feb 2003 06:09:17 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from hnunez@vianetworks.com.ar) Received: from pchnunez (pc-hnunez.vianetworks.com.ar [200.10.101.5] (may be forged)) by ns1.via-net-works.net.ar (8.12.6/8.12.6) with SMTP id h1LE9EFZ079004 for ; Fri, 21 Feb 2003 11:09:15 -0300 (ART) (envelope-from hnunez@vianetworks.com.ar) From: Hernan Nunez Message-ID: <015201c2d9b2$d4f2e750$05650ac8@ms.vianetworks.net.ar> Reply-To: To: "freebsd-isp@freebsd.org" References: <200302210338.h1L3c060020498@p3.saignon.net> Subject: Re: 5.0 Release...upgrade me servers now?? Not sure about robust, we manage slightly over 6k users currently. Went with XTRadius because it allows you to either control in the users file, or outsorce to an external script/program that returns a 0 or 255 response. We heavily manage users from a variety or sources and requirements (time limitations, custom ACL transmissions, IP address management from radius, restrict to certain POPs, etc...) so we needed to simply dump the RADIUS request to a custom made script which parses the login information and determines using a variety of requirements and cases, what to return with the auth. So from a flexibility POV it can't be beat, though I am not sure this is unique to XTRadius. In short, being able to do customization in Perl rather than dealing with plugins and so forth for a specific RADIUS application was the primary appeal(which would require some sort of ramp-up) was the primary motivating factor, and still is to date. All XTRadius worries about is 0 or 255, auth or not, and passes back to the NAS whatever the external app gives it back along with the auth. Of course, your mileage may vary :) Dave To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isp" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isp Fri Feb 21 9:35:22 2003 Delivered-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7C2A537B405 for ; Fri, 21 Feb 2003 09:35:20 -0800 (PST) Received: from yama.openaccess.org (ns1.openaccess.org [216.57.214.17]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id F0E1C43FBD for ; Fri, 21 Feb 2003 09:35:19 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from michael@staff.openaccess.org) Received: from [216.57.214.91] ([216.57.214.91]) by yama.openaccess.org (8.12.3/8.11.6) with ESMTP id h1LHPWZX051062; Fri, 21 Feb 2003 09:25:32 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from michael@staff.openaccess.org) User-Agent: Microsoft-Entourage/10.0.0.1309 Date: Fri, 21 Feb 2003 09:35:22 -0800 Subject: Re: radius server suggestions From: Michael DeMan To: Manny Obrey , Message-ID: In-Reply-To: Mime-version: 1.0 Content-type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org We have been pleased with FreeRADIUS. You don't even need that much. You can create a text file called install.cfg, put it on a floppy and provide it once you've got sysinstall up. For my installs, I have 3 floppy disks which do the whole install over the network totally unsupervised. If your servers have network cards that support PXE boot you can automate the entire process. Check out the sysinstall man page. If anybody wants my install.cfg, let me know and I'll send it to you. -- Ted Cabeen http://www.pobox.com/~secabeen ted@impulse.net Check Website or Keyserver for PGP/GPG Key BA0349D2 secabeen@pobox.com "I have taken all knowledge to be my province." -F. LDAP is suitable for authentication information, simply because the data is not required to be up-to-date at all times. If a user cannot log in for five minutes because his password change did not go replicate yet, that's not a big deal, since it eventually will be replicated. SQL is intended for complex and transaction-based queries, which makes it well suited to store accounting records. RADIUS records the start and stop times of every user, along with various information such as the speed they connected at, what number they dialed from (provided your telco supports passing you this info), what number the user dialed in to (ditto on the telcot thing), the reason they got disconnected (if the hardware they dialed in to supports it), octets sent and receives, etc It is then really easy to create an script for users to login to and view their usage statistics. Also a lot of ISP environments track usage for billing purposes, making this chore very simple. Just my two cents. From time to time it reports unknown viruses on non-infected emails, but they're always badly formatted spams, so we just reject them as viruses and move on. With a moderately loaded server (~100000 emails a day), load hovers around 1.0, with the majority of that being SpamAssassin. The most significant advantage that F-Prot had over the competition was the native FreeBSD version, and the low price. Most of the other AV companies charged on a per-user basis, which turned out to be fairly expensive. F-Prot is $300 or $450 per server, regardless of the number of users protected. -- Ted Cabeen http://www.pobox.com/~secabeen ted@impulse.net Check Website or Keyserver for PGP/GPG Key BA0349D2 secabeen@pobox.com "I have taken all knowledge to be my province." -F. Make sure you make the disk bootable by installing the boot loader. Also, = this way you can size the new partitions to values you feel are appropriate = for the new presumably bigger drive. Then, dump and restore cd /usr;dump -0f - /usr | (cd /mnt/new-usr; restore -rf - )=20 cd /;dump -0f - / | (cd /mnt/new-slash; restore -rf - )=20 and so on. Note, if you are using a recent STABLE, try -C 24. This should speed it = up a bit if the file system is not being written to at the time. cd /usr;dump -C 24 -0f - /usr | (cd /mnt/new-usr; restore -rf - )=20 With this latter method, if you are doing a lot of drives, you could = script it, and use something like a firewire IDE enclosure to hot swap the = drives. ---Mike On Thu, 20 Feb 2003 09:33:53 +0530, in sentex.lists.freebsd.isp you = wrote: >Pierre-Luc Lesp=E9rance wrote: >> Adrian Gonzalez wrote: >>=20 >>> >>> Is there anything out there that resembles Symantec Ghost but works=20 >>> with FreeBSD partitions? >>> >>> Basically I want to be able to transfer a FreeBSD installation from = an=20 >>> old hard drive to a new one without having to reinstall, reconfigure,= =20 >>> etc. > >Ghost for unix is what you are looking for. > >http://rfhs8012.fh-regensburg.de/~feyrer/g4u/ > >Try and tell us ur experience > >Regards > >Aravind Balasubramanian > > > > > >To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org >with "unsubscribe freebsd-isp" in the body of the message Mike Tancsa (mike@sentex.net)=09 http://www.sentex.net/mike To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isp" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isp Sat Feb 22 11: 4:59 2003 Delivered-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 152F937B401 for ; Sat, 22 Feb 2003 11:04:58 -0800 (PST) Received: from diana.northnetworks.ca (att-ws20.switchview.com [216.13.70.20]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6DC9543FB1 for ; Sat, 22 Feb 2003 11:04:57 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from iaccounts@northnetworks.ca) Received: from localhost (iaccounts@localhost) by diana.northnetworks.ca (8.11.6/8.11.6) with ESMTP id h1MJ4vV43616 for ; Sat, 22 Feb 2003 14:04:57 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from iaccounts@northnetworks.ca) Date: Sat, 22 Feb 2003 14:04:56 -0500 (EST) From: IAccounts To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Subject: First time on list Message-ID: <20030222135242.G33210-100000@diana.northnetworks.ca> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.org This is my first message on this list, and I'm just trying to get a feel for it. My day job is one as a Senior Systems/Network Manager of a 7000-10000 user ISP in south-eastern Ontario, Canada. I use FreeBSD 4.3-5.0 in production for some (incomplete list) of the following: web hosting (apache) ftp (ftpd) smtp (sendmail) pop (popper) dns (bind) radius More specifically, I use FBSD 4.7 as our main perimiter firewall, just behind our cisco 3600 series router, which is connected to 3 full T-1 carrier lines. We outsource our spam mail filtering to Postini, and my special network mail routing system (that ensures all mail is actually filtered by postini by not allowing any mail from anyone except postini) is controlled and directed by 2 FBSD bridges, filtering the IP headers with IPFW. We also co-lo an entire windows network for another hosting provider, and the way our webstats config is set up (for the windows hosted domains), the sql box is inside of the co-lo's 'boxed' network. Another 5.0 bridge connects our webstats webserver to the sql box, and only those 2 machines can speak to each other, with no other traffic able to reach the sql box (of which, unfortunatly is running MSSQL(not my choice)). This was to prevent the colos sql box from being hit by the recent worm. I also am a freelance IT consultant, who has built a business that houses 3-4 contract type employees. I have successfully and actively use FBSD in many of my own network situations, as well as for my clients. Things such as IPSec gateways for 802.11b, proxy servers, name servers, nat boxes and you know how the list goes on and on. I would like to hear about what other ISP tech's are doing with FreeBSD, and also what type of questions should be asked on this list. (ISP Tech questions, or ISP business type questions). I've been using kavdaemon to scan 300,000 e-mails per day using Exiscan as the connection to the MTA. It is very stable. kavdaemon can scan into archives, and can scan MIME attachments without conversion, making it quite quick. Letting kavdaemon scan the raw messages also allows it detect common exploits, like the IFRAME exploit for IE. According to my stats, kavdaemon blocks more messages with an IFRAME exploit than anything else (I think spammers are using the IFRAME exploit to launch browsers to their web site). I don't use the Kaspersky sendmail integration software, I found it too expensive (per user licensing), while kavdeamon by itself just requires a server license. And here is a big one: no false positives. Most people aren't aware that we are using kavdaemon.
