I've got a PC-CARD Linksys Instant Wireless WPC11 (3.0) built on Prism chipset, FreeBSD 4.7-STABLE determines it as wi0. Is it possible to measure Voltage Standing Wave Ratio using this card and what software should I use? The second question. Is it possible to measure a power of received singal strength and draw a graph (depending of a frequency) in real-time? I'd like to get a bar chart too. What software should I use? I know about "wlanexpert", it does not suite as I do not have Windows 9x with PCMCIA type II/III slots. Please CC: me when replying as I'm not subscribed to the list yet. Thank you. I'd be happy to work with any USB/Kernel experts to try to get this working. Just let me know what you need me to do. (I am not now, and never have been, a kernel hacker.) I can recompile the kernel with INVARIANTS &co turned on if that would be helpful. thanks, nomad ----------- The cry has been that when war is declared, all opposition should therefore be hushed. Additional hints on this can be found in the freebsd-mobile archive, look for posts were the topic contains 'Bluetooth on IBM T30' which are about a week old. This is a problem that exists for some time, and I am also willing to help fix it. It is not specific for IBM T30, but happens on a varety of laptops, and probably as well on desktops that have an usb hub connected. Also, I get the same error on my T30 when I resume it from suspend mode with 4.8 Prerelease, then the usb mouse dies. This did NOT happen with a 4.7 stable built some time around december 2002. But then I have no idea if this is related to the above problem. kind regards, t. I had no cardbus or legacy card support in my kernel, and I could still use xl0. However, I could not get cardbus or legacy card support working on 5.0, which is why I'm now on 4.8. I tried making world up to 5.0-current from -release, and it never worked. I always got some odd error. Repeated cvsup did not help. I think the error code was hardware related. ACPI worked okay. With 'device card 1', I'd get a power cycle about 30 seconds after boot. I could not boot a cardbus enabled kernel, nor an eisa enabled kernel. If you can live with ACPI (maybe causing compilation errors with its hardware support?) that errors often, no card support (unless you can get it working ;D), and other oddities, I recommend you stick with 4.8. I also had a lot of trouble compiling ports on 5.0. It would often take me 10 tries of 'make install clean' to get it to go through all the way. I could not put up with this for 'make world'. 4.8 has been flawless. Some APM support, and PCCARD (all I need). Everything compiles, and I have done numerous make worlds to -stable. I would never go back to 5.0. They can be set either in the kernel configuration file (see config(8)), or else in the User Configuration Menu at boot time (see boot(8)). bit 0 (FAIL_IF_NO_KBD) By default the atkbd driver will install even if a keyboard is not actually connected to the system. This option prevents the driver from being installed in this situation. --> bit 1 (NO_RESET) When this option is given, the atkbd driver will not reset the key- board when initializing it. It may be useful for laptop computers whose function keys have special functions and these functions are forgotten when the keyboard is reset. bit 2 (ALT_SCANCODESET) Certain keyboards, such as those on some ThinkPad models, behave like the old XT keyboard and require this option. This is a problem with the connected device. My expirience about this is that such devices have bad oscillator designs and notebooks tend to have a worse power quality - especialy when running on batteries. I asume that most of this device work if you give them more time to get ready after connecting than required by specs. It seems that we already wait longer than required, but you can try to increase USB_PORT_POWERUP_DELAY in src/sys/dev/usb/usb.h a bit more. -- B.Walter BWCT http://www.bwct.de ticso@bwct.de info@bwct.de From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Apr 5 01:59:40 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 644EA37B401 for ; Sat, 5 Apr 2003 01:59:40 -0800 (PST) Received: from accms33.physik.rwth-aachen.de (accms33.physik.RWTH-Aachen.DE [137.226.46.133]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5289B43FAF for ; Sat, 5 Apr 2003 01:59:39 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from kuku@accms33.physik.rwth-aachen.de) Received: (from kuku@localhost) by accms33.physik.rwth-aachen.de (8.11.6/8.9.3) id h359xbc10358 for freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org; Sat, 5 Apr 2003 11:59:37 +0200 Date: Sat, 5 Apr 2003 11:59:37 +0200 From: Christoph Kukulies Message-Id: <200304050959.h359xbc10358@accms33.physik.rwth-aachen.de> To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Subject: X server, touchpad, mouse X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 05 Apr 2003 09:59:40 -0000 When I run X (FreeBSD 5.0R, XFree86 4.?.?) and use the touchpad, everything's fine. When I was running under 4.5-4.7, APM usually indicated more than 3 hrs available on a fresh battery, and that was usually the case. When I went to 5.0, it started saying less than 2 hours, and that too has been the case. No hardware changes were made. I know that IBM has had problems with battery life in the past, so I may just be a victim of that. :/ I've been trying to get ACPI working with this system, and it's getting closer. The mouse works with it (it didn't before), and some battery related things work, but most don't. (it claims I always have 99% battery with 0 time remaining regardless of charge or AC line state, for example.) I've been completely unable to get the system to recover from sleep in any way, shape, or mode (APM or ACPI). It locks up so tight I have to hit and hold the power button to get it back. I'm running 5.0-CURRENT, most recently updated on 3 APR. thanks, nomad ----------- The cry has been that when war is declared, all opposition should therefore be hushed. I took the advice someone else offered and just disabled ACPI. APM works well enough. I can't get the laptop to goto sleep but that's perferable to going to sleep and never waking (as it did with ACPI). I have no idea if if the problem is with FreeBSD's ACPI code or IBM's wacky BIOS, I've given up and settled for good enough. If you do get ACPI working please post any hints to the list, I might take another try at it. andrew From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Apr 5 12:33:23 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 353C437B401 for ; Sat, 5 Apr 2003 12:33:23 -0800 (PST) Received: from luftpost.plosh.net (luftpost.plosh.net [204.152.186.181]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E621843FBD for ; Sat, 5 Apr 2003 12:33:21 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from plosher+freebsd.org@plosh.net) Received: from zorin.isc.org (unknown [64.139.14.228]) (using TLSv1 with cipher RC4-MD5 (128/128 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by luftpost.plosh.net (Postfix) with ESMTP id 002C532606 for ; Sat, 5 Apr 2003 12:33:33 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from plosher+freebsd.org@plosh.net) From: Peter Losher To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Date: Sat, 5 Apr 2003 12:32:16 -0800 User-Agent: KMail/1.4.3 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: Multipart/Mixed; boundary="------------Boundary-00=_T11WZQ4B0GQHL45JA1CR" Message-Id: <200304051232.17119.plosher+freebsd.org@plosh.net> X-Content-Filtered-By: Mailman/MimeDel 2.1.1 Subject: Problems with XFree 4.3/FreeBSD and a Inspiron 5100. It's a problem with the capacity signal the battery logic transmits to the bios, not with the actual battery capacity. covering certain pins on the battery will disable that signal, and the battery will run for the expected duration. the same behaviour is present on windows as well. it definitely is a problem ibm should fix soon. it can happen to brand new batteries. greets, t.
