Main requirements are that the video is supported by XFree86, that it has usb 2.0 interfaces. (I know ehci is still in the works, but I need 2.0 for a future application) Anybody has some good experience to share related to freebsd and thinkpads ? any recommendations ? I like ibm's laptops in general (good past experience) but if there is any other brand/models that FreeBSD supports better, I will look into it. All feedback and opinions are much appreciated. I had a couple of suggestions. You have the same graphics card I upgraded my Dell I8000 to. Try adding option agp_load="YES" to your /boot/loader.conf and the following line(s) to your XF86Config under the Driver "radeon" (or ati if that is what you put): Option "AGPMode" "4" Option "AGPFastWrite" "1" Option "EnablePageflip" The AGP should help your video playback. As will enabling SSE in the kernel. If you don't know, you can enable DRM in the XF86Config file with these lines: Section "DRI" Mode 0666 EndSection Make sure you also have the following under Section "Module": Load "dri" Load "glx" Load "drm" All you need after that is the radeon.ko file up in /modules to get DRI up and running. You can either do this using the directions at http://people.freebsd.org/~anholt/dri/ or you can install the drm-kmod port (tad out of date but it will work). You will probably also want to make sure that the Mesa port is installed to take full advantage of GL type programs. By the way, radeon DRI doesn't like suspend/resume cycles. DRI won't run without AGP so I strongly suspect that is why your linux_without_agp handles that better. The same is true for FreeBSD. You can disable it by simply commenting out the modules lines with "dri" and "drm" in them. Have you tried switching to a vtty before suspending after starting up X? This often helps with resume problems... Have you tried loading the wireless driver as a kernel module? You may find that you could arrange to unload the module before suspending and then reload it after resuming. It is quite possible this would work for you. This is in fact how I handle my mini-pci lucent modem. I'll leave you with one last note. The firewire stuff in FreeBSD is working quite well under 4.8 -- you might want to try it. Two problems: * Minor (compared to how bad it was without AGP): Suspend instantly freezes the machine. (As noted on the web page, Linux has the same problem with its AGP driver.) * Major: XFree86.0.log shows (II) RADEON(0): Panel ID string: [byte 255 repeated many times] (II) RADEON(0): Panel Size from BIOS: 65535x65535 and X dumps core. (Linux doesn't have this problem.) As for the wireless-resume incompatibility: I haven't bothered trying to fix this. Resume doesn't work with X (even if I kill X before suspend); rewriting X is increasingly tempting but not an overnight job. Resume also hangs the APM driver; without the APM driver, I don't know the battery status, so I'm unlikely to risk having the battery run down. Wireless is the least of these problems. ---D. J. This was good enough for me but it's probably not good enough if you plan to keep your laptop that way for several hours without AC power. On my new laptop, there's no APM bios, only ACPI, so FreeBSD 4.x won't support any power management. FreeBSD 5.x doesn't work right (with ACPI disabled it doesn't boot fully, and with ACPI enabled it doesn't find the touchpad). You may have better luck though. It may be worth trying ACPI, I think many newer laptops don't have very functional APM BIOS's. With linux, I'm using the "software suspend" patch and it works fine for me so far; you may want to try it, after reading all the warnings. http://fchabaud.free.fr/English/default.php3?COUNT=3&FILE0=Tricks&FILE1=Laptop&FILE2=Swsusp I'm using the version for kernel 2.4.20 with acpi patches (from http://acpi.sf.net); there are more recent acpi patches for more recent kernels, you can find an "all-in-one" kernel with both the acpi patches and swsusp (I haven't tried it) at http://savannah.nongnu.org/projects/laptopkernel/ Rahul From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jun 2 16:49:45 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6B10237B401 for ; Mon, 2 Jun 2003 16:49:45 -0700 (PDT) Received: from parmenides.zen.co.uk (parmenides.zen.co.uk [212.23.8.69]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 2799B43F85 for ; Mon, 2 Jun 2003 16:49:42 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from tony@ubik.demon.co.uk) Received: (qmail 19062 invoked from network); 2 Jun 2003 23:49:40 -0000 Received: from protagoras.zen.co.uk (212.23.8.61) by parmenides.zen.co.uk with QMQP; 2 Jun 2003 23:49:40 -0000 Received: from dsl-217-155-183-134.zen.co.uk (HELO ubik.demon.co.uk) (217.155.183.134) by protagoras.zen.co.uk with SMTP; 2 Jun 2003 23:49:40 -0000 X-Zen-Trace: 217.155.183.134 Message-ID: <0+volPAiJ+2+IwsY@ubik.demon.co.uk> Date: Mon, 2 Jun 2003 23:48:50 +0000 To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org From: Anthony Naggs References: <1308.65.27.100.34.1054442547.squirrel@mail.totalsmackdown.net> In-Reply-To: MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Turnpike Integrated Version 5.01 U cc: freebsd@totalsmackdown.net Subject: Re: Linksys WPC11 ver.4 X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 02 Jun 2003 23:49:45 -0000 A brief update, I now have a datasheet for Realtek's RTL8180 802.11b MAC. I was wondering if anyone had had any success getting a wheel-mouse working on their laptop. I have a Dell Inspiron w/ a MS Optical Mouse (USB), but have not yet got the wheel working (for scrolling -- using it to paste works just fine). I've asked Google, and tried what I've found (ZAxisMapping option), but had no luck. Here is the Mouse section of my XF86Config: Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Mouse0" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol" "MouseSystems" Option "Device" "/dev/sysmouse" Option "Emulate3Buttons" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" EndSection Another thing... when I unplug my laptop from the mains and it goes on to battery power, the keyboard refresh rate always becomes very sluggish. Is there anyway to boost this up again without rebooting? I'm using FreeBSD 4.8-STABLE if it's relevant. I can talk to it with pciconf, pcitweak, and scanpci, and it appears to take configuration from ifconfig; however, netstat -r times out waiting to find the route. FWIW, ifconfig does *not* seem to read the card's MAC address (ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff) My Zoom Telephonics 2975L PCMCIA Modem also has ceased working. Under 4.7-STABLE, I had a little trouble with this, e.g., booting with the card in the slot would cause a system hang until you removed the card. It doesn't look too scary, though some of the description is rather vague. So I'm now looking for a PCI card implementation that I can try writing a driver for. (Anybody seen one, preferably in the UK or Europe? A cheap Cardbus bridge would be nearly as good.) A very quick overview: The RTL8180 is NIC (or MAC) for IEEE 802.11b network cards, designed to work with 3 different RF frontend chipsets. It is a 32-bit part so can be packaged as a PCI card, (for desktops), a mini-PCI card (some laptops), or a 32-bit Cardbus PC Card. (Note: on FreeBSD 32-bit Cardbus cards need Warner's NEWBUS support, as I understand it, essentially this means running FreeBSD 5.1.) My company has announced that they will pull out of USA and i will most likely loose my job. Unless i find another position, i will be forced to return back home. If anyone knows/wants to hire a H1B slave please drop me a e-mail. I will consider any position within USA or even Europe. I am *really* sorry :( I will try to do my best and support the code, but i can not make any promises at this point. Below is a quick summary of changes: - new libbluetooth(3) that has routines to convert between names and BD_ADDRs (bt_gethostbyname, bt_gethostbyaddr etc). the library also supports convertion between PSMs and PSM names (bt_getprotobyname, bt_getprotobynumber) all configuration is stored in /etc/bluetooth/hosts and /etc/bluetooth/protocols files. see man pages for details - all userspace tools were updated and now you can specify hostnames instead of BD_ADDRs NOTE: please remove old libbluetooth.a and bluetooth.h files in /usr/local/include and /usr/local/lib before upgrade. - all man pages were updated (per Ruslan Ermilov) - all Makefiles were updates (per Ruslan Ermilov) - new man pages were added (hcsecd.conf, bluetooth.hosts, bluetooth.protocols etc). - default location of the hcsecd.conf file is now in /etc/bluetooth instead of /usr/local/bluetooth. - minor fix to the RFCOMM module (set priority field in PN message as required by TS 07 spec). thanks, max __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? FreeBSD 5.1-BETA and 5.1-BETA2 did NOT work. The kernel would hang (and give a db> prompt) right after firewire was detected, and before some PCI stuff was detected. This forced me to go with Debian "woody" Linux, since I couldn't get ACPI/APM working in either of the -RELEASE branches. (And APM does indeed work under Debian Linux.) But I still followed the -CURRENT mailling list, hoping that someone better versed with the 5.x branch of the FreeBSD kernel would have the same problem I had and provide a fix/patch/workaround. Yesterday, that day came! Thomas Girard had the same problem on a Sony VAIO PCG-GRX316G laptop, and he posted his workaround to the list. It is a simple one-line boot loader statement: set hw.pci.allow_unsupported_io_range=1 Seeing this, I IMMEDIATELY began downloading the latest ISO CDROM, FreeBSD 5.1-RC1 and started the burn before I left work for the evening. In the morning, I eagerly popped the freshly burned CD out of the tray, placed it in my IBM Thinkpad A30p's CD drive and rebooted. It worked! And I actually think my ACPI may be working properly. I didn't see any errors at boot. So, when FreeBSD 5.1-RELEASE is released, I'll happily return to the proud ranks of the FreeBSD mobile crowd. I'll update the FreeBSD Laptop page when that time comes. Bye bye annoying messy Linux. See you later. -- Jesse Guardiani, Systems Administrator WingNET Internet Services, P.O. And what can I do to pinpoint the problem? thx, t. And being able to do this form userland. Has anyone looked at the existing symbol firmware loading code in freebsd 5.x and looked at generalizing this with some ioctl()'s for upload/download of firmware (and propalby an extra SIOCGPRISM2INFO to give userland enough of an idea of the primary/secondary version numbers to be able to select/check the hex files) ? I've started coding some of this into the wi driver - but one thing which worries me is how to properly activate it; i.e. how does one from an ioctl a clean detach/probe sort of thing ? I take it that one cannot call wi_generic_detach(), wi_generic_attach() from inside the ioctol handler ? I've looked into it. Primary/secondary versions aren't as interesting as the actual product ID for determining which hex file to load. There's also a need for getting additional data out of the current firmware so it can be merged into the hex file before we burn the new firmware. There's also a number of sanity checks that need to be made to make sure that primary firmware is compatible with the secondary firmware you are loading, etc. : I've started coding some of this into the wi driver - but one thing which : worries me is how to properly activate it; i.e. how does one from an ioctl : a clean detach/probe sort of thing ? I take it that one cannot call : wi_generic_detach(), wi_generic_attach() from inside the ioctol handler ? I don't think you need to call attach/detach. I think its overkill and completely unnecessary. There's really no need at all to do this. You should take the interface down, note you are updating the firmware to preclude it coming back up, do the firmware upload, and then call wi_init again. It may make sense to set certain flags based on the new version, but I don't think much else is required. ('discoverable' mode is when the cell phone answers inquiry). note that hcsecd(8) must be running all the time, otherwise cell phone will not be able to receive link key and will 'forget' PC on next connection attempt. if this happens 'paring' procedure must be repeated. i would like to thank Alex for reporting this problem and helping with testing. thanks, max __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? SanDisk SDCFB-32 flash reader/writer that works in a PCMCIA slot in a notebook. When I insert it in a PCI adapter to use it in my desktop I am not able to detect it. A prism 2.5 WiFi card works great in this PCI adapter. The OS version is 5.0-RELEASE. Is anyone successfully using PCMCIA flash reader with a PCI adapter? Do you see any reason why it should not work? My scanpci -v, tweakpci -l, dmesg are at http://kocour.ms.mff.cuni.cz/~petricek/work/wifi/ Thank you very much for any hints, Vaclav From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Jun 6 15:36:00 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CAA6C37B401 for ; Fri, 6 Jun 2003 15:36:00 -0700 (PDT) Received: from multivac.drewish.com (216-210-203-35.atgi.net [216.210.203.35]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0AF9843F93 for ; Fri, 6 Jun 2003 15:36:00 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from drewish@katherinehouse.com) Received: from katherinehouse.com (host-201-225.pubnet.pdx.edu [131.252.201.225]) by multivac.drewish.com (8.12.9/8.12.9) with ESMTP id h56MenHT065771; Fri, 6 Jun 2003 15:40:52 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from drewish@katherinehouse.com) Message-ID: <3EE10DDF.8070303@katherinehouse.com> Date: Fri, 06 Jun 2003 14:55:43 -0700 From: andrew morton User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.4) Gecko/20030529 X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Tobias Roth References: <20030606082803.GA25257@speedy.unibe.ch> In-Reply-To: <20030606082803.GA25257@speedy.unibe.ch> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Spam-Status: No, hits=-31.9 required=5.0 tests=EMAIL_ATTRIBUTION,IN_REP_TO,QUOTED_EMAIL_TEXT,REFERENCES, REPLY_WITH_QUOTES,USER_AGENT_MOZILLA_UA version=2.53 X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 2.53 (1.174.2.15-2003-03-30-exp) cc: mobile@freebsd.org Subject: Re: IBM T30 and thermal problems X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 06 Jun 2003 22:36:01 -0000 I don't know if it'll be of any use to you but healthd (in the ports helped me diagnose an overheating server. andrew Tobias Roth wrote: > Hi > > Yesterday afternoon I got several coredumps with sig 4 and sig 10 > during a kernel build, at different stages of compilation. This morning, everything compiled through neatly. I got my T30 1.8GHz last autumn, so it never really experienced hot days until now. The last memcheck (memtest86) run was several months ago, and it didn't reveal any problems. But then, this check doesn't seem too reliable to me, it didn't detect a dimm as bad that definitely was broken. So my questions: did anyone experience heat problems with a T30? And what can I do to pinpoint the problem? thx, t. _______________________________________________ freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-mobile To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-mobile-unsubscribe@freebsd.org"
