(location.sh) X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 12 Oct 2003 07:10:45 -0000 So I have been using Lars Eggert's location.sh (v1.25) script (seen at http://www.isi.edu/larse/etc.html), and it's just what I am looking for as I am usually at several sites, with a mix of wireless and wired net access. (esp. now that I can use the Broadcom NIC on my Inspiron 5100 in -current - Yay!) However I have some issues, and I wondered whether anyone has come across them, and if they got around them. First - is there any way to specify what interfaces get probed by the script? With my wireless card, I have three possible NIC's - the wireless card (wi0), the on-board Broadcom BCM4401 (bfe0), and the support for a Firewire NIC (fwe0). Now I don't ever see myself plugging in a Firewire NIC anytime soon, so I would rather not have that interface probed. I have tried setting "network_interfaces="wi0 bfe0 lo0"" in rc.conf, but it looks like location.sh doesn't honor it. Second - Anyone get this around 10 times when each interface doesn't get a response to a ping? Can't grep /var/run/dhclient.leases : No such file or directory (another reason why I don't want fwe0 probed, it's another delay) Third - How do you find out what IP should be probed?. I have been able to detect wireless hubs/AP's just fine, but esp. on wired nets, I have tried probing switches, default route, etc. and I get no ping response. Also - does anyone have a setup for using T-Mobile Hotspot? (do they keep their AP's on the same RFC1918 address?) Thanks in advance with any tips you can provide - Peter -- [ http://www.plosh.net/ ] - "Have you violated the DMCA today?" You can also try lowering probe_delay. > Third - How do you find out what IP should be probed?. Probing works best with the arping port installed. The ping/shcp probes don't work in many cases. If you don't have arping installed, I strongly recommend it. Good peers for probing are nodes at a given location that don't change IP addresses often, e.g., routers and servers. Hi Warner, this seems to be an Acer Aspire-specific problem. I tried to boot FreeBSD 5.1-RELEASE from the install CD on an Acer Aspire 1603LC and didn't see a rl0 device either. A verbose boot shows that the Realtek 8139 which should be at rl0@pci0:7:0 is not detected when scanning the PCI bus. Booting with ACPI disabled doesn't make a difference; rl0 is still missing. I don't suppose there's a bios option to turn off the network is there? If the deivce isn't there at all in the pci scan, the problem isn't with the rl driver. It is either that the chip is off and not responding, or there's some subtle bug in the pci scanning code. I'm running 5.1 on a laptop. [sephtin@draxa ~]$ uname -a FreeBSD draxa.techgodz.com 5.1-RELEASE-p5 FreeBSD 5.1-RELEASE-p5 #1: Mon Oct 6 10:35:12 CDT 2003 root@draxa.techgodz.com:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/draxa i386 I have 2 problems: 1) When booting, with a PC-Card (wi0) in, no matter what defaultrouter= is set to in /etc/start_if.wi0 it always uses what's in /etc rc.conf. I don't understand! /etc/start_if.${interface} is sourced in both /etc/network.subr, as well as /etc/pccard_ether. It is DEFINITELY getting my card's ifconfig_wi0 info from start_if.wi0 (as that is the only place I have the ssid, wepmode and wepkey set, and it finds them correctly...). Shouldn't I be able to override the defaultrouter= in rc.conf with what's in /etc/start_if.wi0??? Just thought to add: the default route that I'm trying to add IS on the same subnet as the IP of the nic... so it isn't failing because of that... 2) On my laptop, I have 2 pccards. One is the dlink wireless (wi0) mentioned above, the other is a linksys 10/100. I NEVER have them in at the same time. When I boot with the wireless card in (after setting the default route by hand... (see problem #1), I remove the card. I get notification that the card has been removed (wi0: detached). I then re-insert the card, and get a notification that the card was inserted(wi0: ..., followed by it's mac, chipset, and supported rates. When I do an ifconfig, it does NOT contain my info for the card (IP, netmask, ssid, wepmode, nor wepkey). Shouldn't it get this info from /etc/start_if.wi0??? I would think it should get both the ifconfig_wi0 parameters, as well as the default router. It is also strange to note, that even if I have defaultrouter= set in rc.conf, it doesn't access it from there... ? Google has so far told me how I'm supposed to set up defaultrouter= in my rc.conf, but doesn't go into what in the startup scripts is failing. Can anyone shed some light, or at least point me in the right direction?? Thanks! My card wakes up and I get both activity light and status light. My router shows that the card has initialized and is on the wireless network, however, I also get the following message: an0: device timeout an0: discard frme w/o leading Ethernet header (len 12 pkt len 12) and dhclient -v an0 doesn't pick up an Ethernet address. I am wondering if there is a workaround or something that I need to do in order for dhclient to pick up an Ethernet address. However, If I start my kernel with ACPI disabled, the card works fine. I think something with acpi or apic is causing my nic to go bonkers, but I'm not quite sure what. I would really appreciate some help with this matter, or if someone could look into this. I would be more than happy to supply you with any addtl information you might need. I get the error after all devices have been probed and there's a message about time counters. I also found out that booting without my Xircom card (CEM56) makes the error go away. For this Toshiba laptop, setting hw.cbb.start_memory or hw.pci.allow_unsupported_io_range="1" didn't produce any effect. I did a look in source code of "current" pccbb and I thought that the current version has been improved. So I donwloaded pccbb and exca directory (for dependency) from current and i put in my source tree (which is a 5.1-RELEASE-p10). Now everithing works fine: the wi0 card (Toshiba Wireless LAN Card - Lucent clone) and the CF (ad4) are detected and initialized correclty. Using the 1.5.6 firmware hostap works fine, but I cannot connect a client to the AP with 1.7.4 Using the hostap driver + linux it works, people have reported problems in the hostap mailinglist regarding the firmware. Do you know what might be the problem?? I'm writing a patch for the wi driver to disable ssid broadcasting and to deny anyone connecting with a blank/any ssid. Here is the result of setting the debug outputs of your recent patch to xe driver to verbose mode and recompiling it under 5.1 release with OLDCARD. The first section is with pccard.conf set to ethernet and the second one with modem configuration. No success in ethernet mode, but inspite of the errors, the modem works ok. I booted with 4.8 CD (only booted, not installed) and the xe was recognized autimatically as a network interface, what I actually dreamt of under 5.1 ! I hope this gives you a clue. Before this one I have a Lifebook S6010 (PIII 1000) and even if it use the same driver Xfree has some problem if you start it (worked fine), exit, start X again, no way :-) It remains freeze and nothing happens. This new version doesn't seem to have this behaviour. * The lan is a realtek 8139 or similar which works with fine with the rl0 driver So I should strongly suggest 100% this notebook to everyone is looking for a light notebook but that has everything you need, if it doesn't have a couple of drawback. 1) It is full of stickers "Designed for Windows XP" and "Centrino", which I really was unable to remove. I really don't know which kind of fucking glue they have used ... any suggestions is welcome :-) 2) The serious problem :-) seems to be the internal wifi card which seems to me be a Intel PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 accordingly to the docs. Because I happen to have one of these, and I'm tracking RELENG_5_1 on my Latitude C810, I went ahead and checked (I haven't needed to use the modem since I upgraded from RELENG_4), and I get the same thing. Booting with the card inserted causes a panic, or insertion post boot causes a panic. First, here's what I've got: Compaq Evo N610c, 1GB RAM, 40GB HD, latest BIOS SW: FreeBSD 5.1 The problem: The PCCard-slots are recognized upon boot but when I insert a card into any of the two slots I get an error message, telling me that there's no pccard slot present. Please note that this happens independent of the card(s) I use: I've tried with a Cisco Aironet 350 WLAN-card, an Elsa WLAN-card (old prism chipset) as well as a Xircom 10/100 Ethernet-Card - these are all cards that should be well known to FreeBSD. I've already tried upgrading both kernel and userland to the latest version (cvsup and the usual build/install procedure) - to no extent; the error remains the same. For your reference I'm including the complete boot-log below (/var/log/messages). Any ideas what could be wrong here?
