These warnings are generated by Witness, a run-time lock diagnostic system found in FreeBSD 5-CURRENT kernels (but removed in releases). You can read more about Witness in the WITNESS(4) man page, which talks about its capabilities. Among other things, Witness performs run-time lock order verification using a combination of hard coded lock orders, and run-time detected lock orders, and generates console warnings when lock orders are violated. The intent of this is to detect the potential for deadlocks due to lock order violations; it's worth observing that Witness is actually slightly conservative, and so it's possible to get false positives. In the event that Witness is accurately reporting a lock order problem, it's basically saying "If you were unlucky, a deadlock would have happened here". There are a couple of "well known" false positives, which we need to do a better job of documenting to prevent spurious reports. The non-well-known ones typically correspond to bugs in newly added locking, as lock order reversals usually get fixed pretty quickly because Witness is busy generating warnings :-). I believe the reversal you've reported is a false positive. Warm boot of FreeBSD works fine here. I personally think it's a video card/driver issue since it only hangs upon loading X11. For anyone who wants to try, here are some loose instructions: Get the latest kernel source (i'm actually running one from two weeks ago but you need what's in cvs for the latest ndis) Extract the driver using unzip compile ndiscvt and install it, cd to the TMSetup dir in the directory where you extracted the driver, run: ndiscvt -i bcmwl5.inf -s bcmwl5.sys -o /usr/src/sys/modules/if_ndis/ndis_driver_data.h cd /usr/src/sys/modules/ndis/ make && make install cd /usr/src/sys/modules/if_ndis/ make && make install kldload ndis kldload if_ndis I made a tiny sh script which contains: sysctl hw.ndis0.EnableAutoConnect=1 ifconfig ndis0 up sleep 1 sysctl hw.ndis0.WEP=0 ifconfig ndis0 up sleep 1 sysctl hw.ndis0.NetworkType=1 ifconfig ndis0 up sleep 1 sysctl hw.ndis0.AuthMode=0 ifconfig ndis0 up sleep 1 sysctl hw.ndis0.SSID=my_net ifconfig ndis0 192.168.0.3 sleep 1 route delete default route add default 192.168.0.1 Obviously change the ip / default gateway to your corrosponding ip address's, as well as the SSID. Your AP need to be in ad hoc mode, no auth and no WEP. I've been using this for the better part of the day, it's extremely stable and quick! If it's not there, try installing the component in YaST => Runlevel-Editor. So it should work. But be warned: 1. Read the obstacles of ACPI documentation carefully, esp. "SUSPEND" etc. 2. In battery mode there isn't a proper warning from ACPI when battery is low (although ACPI recognizes the current low capacity). I work on that issue myself. by the way, you can always control ACPI by starting, in a shell: acpiw or gtkacpiw (grahical frontend) regards, markus From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Dec 15 09:03:47 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A1CD916A4CE; Mon, 15 Dec 2003 09:03:47 -0800 (PST) Received: from lerami.lerctr.org (lerami.lerctr.org [207.158.72.11]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4507F43D32; Mon, 15 Dec 2003 09:03:46 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from ler@lerctr.org) Received: from lerlaptop-red.iadfw.net ([207.136.3.72]) by lerami.lerctr.org with asmtp (Exim 4.30) id 1AVw8H-0004B0-10; Mon, 15 Dec 2003 11:03:45 -0600 Date: Mon, 15 Dec 2003 11:03:44 -0600 From: Larry Rosenman To: Doug White Message-ID: <130840000.1071507824@lerlaptop-red.iadfw.net> In-Reply-To: <20031215090112.S81321@carver.gumbysoft.com> References: <48730000.1071502475@lerlaptop-red.iadfw.net> <20031215090112.S81321@carver.gumbysoft.com> X-Mailer: Mulberry/3.1.0 (Linux/x86) X-PGP-Info: All other keys are old/dead. However, I cannot get freebsd 4.9 (using the mini install disc) to install. I was hoping someone would have some suggestions or at least an idea of what I could look for to get more information. The kernel config portion of the install reports no conflicts, but during the rest of the install kernel boot, it ends with: ata1-slave: ATAPI identify retries exceeded ad0: READ command timeout tag=0 serv=0 - resetting ata0: resetting devices .. And then just hangs forevermore with the drive icon lit up. Windows XP, which came with the machine, says the ATA controller is an Intel 82801DBM UltraATA Storage Controler 24CA, with the primary using irq 14. It's a pentium M processor built into this thing, built in wireless (which, because I am a superstitious man, I attempted to boot with both disabled and enabled) and would be the best laptop I've ever owned if only I could get FreeBSD on it. I'm trying to install vmware now which seems happier (at least the install completes) but I'd rather have a true dual boot system that I could use via vmware or standalone rather than letting freebsd ride shotgun. I've found some bugs submitted against freebsd-current (5.1ish) that seem like small and reasonable patches into sys/dev/ata/ata-dma.c to include detection for this specific controller. My best guess so far as to what I should do will be to compile these fixes in (if I can) to my -stable. Then build install media off of the new and modified source tree. The machine locks up just like before, output from db http://shapeshifter.se/~fredde/tmp/db.acpi-cbb-disabled That db-output showed uchi still on irq10, so I disabled all usb-related stuff from the kernel, and guess what, the machine booted with working acpi. Some output with acpi enabled and cbb and uhci disabled http://shapeshifter.se/~fredde/tmp/db.acpi-cbb-uhci.disabled http://shapeshifter.se/~fredde/tmp/dmesg.acpi-cbb-uhci.disabled I also tried to load the usb kernelmoduels (usbd) after boot but that hangs the machine and a show intrcnt says irq10: uhci1 3391124, same irq-storm. I'd like to use one of these CF to PCMCIA adapters to connect this PDA Wlan card to my laptop. Do you have an idea - if this CF to PCMCIA adapter is supported in general ? - if there is a Wlan CF card supported also by FreeBSD ? The card should support - 802.11b - WEP up to 128 or better - WPA ??? - be supported by Win Pocket PC 2003 (Dell Axim X5) Some cards have Linux support I noticed on eBay, but I didn't find something for FreeBSD. Thanks a lot for any pointer. If I close the lid during the kernel boot it goes to an hanging sleep. The reason I may close the lid during boot is that when I am at work I usally plug in my personal Compaq Evo to the ethernet, starting it and closes the lid. But nowadays when I most of the time use the suspend to disk feature this is not an issue. But sometimes I want to do an reboot and close the lid. I have tried to set hw.acpi.lid_switch_state="S0" in device.hints and loader.conf but it does not work (not with ="NONE" either) > >> Also for I have > >> hw.cbb.start_memory="0xd0208000" > >> since pci/pcib allocates the memory assigned to fxp0 by BIOS to pccard otherwise. > > This sounds like the root problem of the interrupt storm. > > >> Now I always use acpiconf -s S4 to suspend and save to disk instead of turning the power off, > >> wonderful. > > Wish S4 worked on my laptops. :-P > My old one works with both S1 and S3, but my new one doesn't support > S1 and never comes back after an S3 suspend. > > -- > > John Baldwin <>< http://www.FreeBSD.org/~jhb/ > "Power Users Use the Power to Serve!" - http://www.FreeBSD.org/ > _______________________________________________ > freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org mailing list > http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-mobile > To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-mobile-unsubscribe@freebsd.org" > > -- Mauritz Sundell From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Dec 18 06:56:49 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A0C2F16A4CE for ; Thu, 18 Dec 2003 06:56:49 -0800 (PST) Received: from mailhost.nmc.kpn.net (mailhost.nmc.kpn.net [194.151.95.5]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 1737243D48 for ; Thu, 18 Dec 2003 06:56:46 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from HeinH@nmc.kpn.net) Received: (qmail 24333 invoked from network); 18 Dec 2003 14:56:44 -0000 Received: from (HELO NMCRD01V3.nmcrd.nmcgv) (@) by mailhost.nmc.kpn.net with SMTP; 18 Dec 2003 14:56:44 -0000 Received: by NMCRD01V3.nmcrd.nmcgv with Internet Mail Service (5.5.2653.19) id ; Thu, 18 Dec 2003 15:56:44 +0100 Message-ID: <8EB4F34946036E499CAE93F5DF40DE870421C49D@NMCRD01V3.nmcrd.nmcgv> From: "Hermans, Hein" To: "'freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org'" Date: Thu, 18 Dec 2003 15:56:43 +0100 MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Internet Mail Service (5.5.2653.19) Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Subject: Slow keyboard response, IRQ routing problems ?
