All it appears to need is the relevant device's ids and identification strings. The patch was obtained from a checked out source tree: cd ${FBSDSRC}/src/sys/dev/sound/pci cvs diff -r 1.42 -r 1.48 es137x.c The relevant revisions were picked out with 'cvs log es1371.c'. BTW, if you don't have anonymous CVS you can do this all through the cvsweb interface: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/src/sys/dev/sound/pci/es137x.c The patch needed minor edits to remove a couple -HEAD vs -STABLE deltas. I'd expect it to apply cleanly to 4.8R, 4.9R, and -STABLE today. If you have any problems, drop me a note. I think that there are ways around the firmware issue, like not distributing it with FreeBSD, but have someone who has the card make it available for "those who already own the card" or something similar. If we want to look at distributing the firmware, possibly a simple request could solve the problem. -- John-Mark Gurney Voice: +1 415 225 5579 "All that I will do, has been done, All that I have, has not." After google'ing it appears there are previous issues with the MSP34XX_DRIVER. One post suggested to add the options listed below in the kernel config file, which I did. The problem persisted. The /dev/mixer and /dev/dsp does function correctly adding a timeout to the driver. Any patches, or suggestion would be appeciated. The firmware is in the Microsoft Windows drivers supplied with the board. Included with the FreeBSD driver is a utility to extract a copy of the firmware from the Microsoft Windows driver so the FreeBSD driver can download it to the board during startup. Ideally the FreeBSD driver distribution should include a version of firmware, however I haven't gotten around to talking to Hauppauge about the licensing issues. I also want to see if they can supply some pointers regarding programming the board to encode VBI information (currently the FreeBSD driver throws away the VBI information). I need to get one, preferably one that can be hooked up through usb; somthing simple, like this http://www.epinions.com/pr-Irock_150VM_MP3_Player/display_~full_specs There are a lot of those devices out there, most supposedly look like a usb drive when connected to the host. How good is the umass support ? The man page only mentions a couple of usb drives/adapters. Any feedback appreciated ! The internal audio mode is the only setting on fxtv that I can hear a faint audio signal after playing with the mixer software and increasing the sound level on the speakers-- it's barely detectable from the background noise-- hey, it's a start. I have been reading the documentation at the Hauppauge WinTV web site and they mention that 2 mixers come to play-- one associated with the sound card (which is easily accessable) and one specific to the a Hauppauge WinTV PCI Card. My investigation now is centered around accessing the mixer on the WinTV card. > > > Any patches, or suggestion would be appeciated. > > The only indication I have is that the audio portion of the ntsc stream > > isn't bound to a driver-- if that's the correct term ;-) > > Same here, shouldn't be a problem, as long as bktr correctly initializes > the audio chip. Please try some FM-Radio apps with your card (e.g. > xmradio) > Last night I grabbed the xmradio from the ports however as I invoked it on the command line, it locked up my system hard resulting in my power cycling it. I also noticed the my system has locked up w/fxtv and mplayer. It's an interesting learning experience. I'm hoping to extend this and add Mythtv or play with some shell or perl scripting. -Patrick > > > > partial dmesg output: > > bktr0: mem 0xf4000000-0xf4000fff irq 22 at device 6.0 on pci2 > > bktr0: Detected a MSP34255?-?31 at 0x80 > > bktr0: STB TV/PCI, Philips FR1236 NTSC FM tuner, dbx stereo, msp3400c stereo. > > pci2: at device 6.1 (no driver attached) > > > > pciconf -lv output: > > bktr0@pci2:6:0: class=0x040000 card=0x13eb0070 chip=0x036e109e rev=0x02 hdr=0x00 > > vendor = 'Brooktree Corporation' > > device = 'Bt878 MediaStream Controller' > > class = multimedia > > subclass = video > > none4@pci2:6:1: class=0x048000 card=0x13eb0070 chip=0x0878109e rev=0x02 hdr=0x00 > > vendor = 'Brooktree Corporation' > > device = 'Bt878/Fusion878A Video Capture (Audio Section)' > > class = multimedia > > The unattached driver shouldn't be the problem as my card shows this > too: > bktr0: Hauppauge Model 44354 C221 > bktr0: Detected a MSP3415D-B3 at 0x80 > bktr0: Hauppauge WinCast/TV, Philips FR1216 PAL FM tuner, msp3400c stereo, remote control. > pci0: (vendor=0x109e, dev=0x0878) at 11.1 irq 10 > > bktr0@pci0:11:0: class=0x040000 card=0x13eb0070 chip=0x036e109e rev=0x11 hdr=0x00 > vendor = 'Brooktree Corporation' > device = 'Bt878 MediaStream Controller' > class = multimedia > subclass = video > none0@pci0:11:1: class=0x048000 card=0x13eb0070 chip=0x0878109e rev=0x11 hdr=0x00 > vendor = 'Brooktree Corporation' > device = 'Bt878/Fusion878A Video Capture (Audio Section)' > class = multimedia > > > Related Kernel conf options: > > # TV Card Options > > device bktr > > device iicbus # Bus support, required for ic/iic/iicsmb below. > > device iicbb > > device smbus > > > > device ic > > device iic > > device iicsmb # smb over i2c bridge > > device smb > > > > options BKTR_NEW_MSP34XX_DRIVER > > options BROOKTREE_SYSTEM_DEFAULT=BROOKTREE_NTSC > > > > options OVERRIDE_CARD=3 > > options OVERRIDE_TUNER=9 > > options OVERRIDE_MSP=1 > > options OVERRIDE_DBX=1 > > Have you tried without these overrides? Please do: - paste the debug-output of "boot -v" related to the bktr code. There will be a lot more lines in dmesg after you started a tv-app such as fxtv, so please include those as well. - Try to set bktr.0.mspsimple=0 (before loading the driver, e.g. from the loader or device.hints). This forces the driver to fall back to the fallback-mode for MSP340* chipsets, maybe it works for you as well. Could you maybe try out the card under Linux? The BKTR_NEW_MSP34XX_DRIVER is ported from the Linux-driver, if it doesn't work under Linux, there is little chance we get it working under FreeBSD. > > > options OVERRIDE_TUNER=9 > > > options OVERRIDE_MSP=1 > > > options OVERRIDE_DBX=1 Forget about those, I don't know if they have side-effects. If you've got a dolby-card, please set the "... .dolby" sysctl. I've never tried it myself, but it's supposed to work. Alex
