Well, there are some projects that do similar things, like www.freesbie.org, and the german freeX Mag also has done a similar CD. (In the book: FreeBSD 5 it is included, www.cul.de) But the best way to check out how it works is always first-hand-experience, I always used a spare drive (needs to only have 3 GB) to install, also with X11. Knoppix is way better maintained than those FreeBSD-based Live systems, especially when it comes to X11 apps. Well, cdrecord is SCSI-only. if you only want to burn iso-images, give burncd a look (base system). This box is connected directly to one of the ISP's but also has access to the other gatways via the LAN. I would like to setup static backup (default) routes such that when and if the main link goes down, the default route for this box is automatically changed to point to another router on the LAN.I am having trouble implementing this on freebsd. And don't get me wrong, I'm reading FAQs and Handbook, I just wanna hear real voice with real opinion. I'll appreciate if you cc me as well since I'm not in a list, hmm yet :) With all respect to FreeBSD, Valentine. I personally use FreeBSD with my Laptop. I've used it on a number of laptops from a Compaq M700 to a old toshiba 320ct. I've found the drive suport and usb support to do the things that I wanted it to do. most noticeably Play music from my archos hard drive MP3 player and download pics from my digital camera. PCMCIA support has worked well for me for nics I haven't tried any other devices that where PCMCIA because I simply don't own any. you can check if your hardware is supported at www.freebsd.org on the right hand side there is a link to hardware. It will take you to the hardware support page that you will find on the ISO or handbook. If you look currently you'll see 2 links one for 4.8 and one for 5.1 New Technology. 5.1 gives cardbus support I'd give it a try even though it's not considered "stable". I've found the bsd community to be a concervative on the meaning of the word stable so my personal opinion is it's good for day to day personal use. Versions of FreeBSD follow 2 paths either stable or current. I'd suggest staying stable in most server/workstation uses. According to netcraft you can easily measure up time for BSD servers in months and years. Kinda over kill for a laptop. I think that every time I go somewhere and shut it down. :) Yes they are but I don't think they're default while installing. GCC is the same. as it is on your linux system. we lag on versions but that again is the stablity over bleeding edge technology moto that seems in my opition to go with *BSD. It seems to be a system that works over a system that has the latest and greatest bells and whistles. You can complie what you're most familiar with and use that as default on your system. The Family of BSD's are built on differnt ways of thinking. FreeBSD is the first one and the daddy to the others. They are all compatable via a FreeBSD compatablity layer in the other kernels. FreeBSD is very generic in it's goals. and limited in the type of hardware you can run it on. NetBSD runs on everything. If there is a toaster with a cpu then they have a team to make it run NetBSD. Great OS if you're like me and run older hardware. Open BSD is security minded. It comes with the greatest security out of the box. Then they're sub projects that are yet to be as muture as the top 3. There is the Freesbie project that let's you create freebsd live cd's and The new Dragonfly BSD that wants to fork off Freebsd that's just getting started picobsd that puts it on a floppy. Linux has distro's that create the OS. The BSD's don't create distro's. A new project is created and a new kernel is sometimes built. That's my 2 cents I hope it's helpful. Please feel free to correct me if I made any mistakes. > Hi, > I would say that I know nothing about FreeBSD and something about UNIX > and even more about Linux. > I was grown up with Linux. Thus: 4.4BSD-Lite | | | | FreeBSD NetBSD | |--OpenBSD > via a FreeBSD compatablity layer in the other kernels. FreeBSD is There is no "FreeBSD compatibility layer". BSD is BSD is BSD. You can run (most) FreeBSD programs on NetBSD or OpenBSD simply by recompiling it. There's no emulation or compatibility required ... it either works, or it doesn't. Each of the BSDs has a compatibility layer for various other versions of UInix, though. I have an ugly problem at boot time, maybe in a rc* script. At boot time i can read this lines on the screen: [snip] can not chdir(/var/spool/clientmqueue/) : Permission denied. Program mode requires special privileges, e.g. root or TrustedUser. [snip] Now I try to login as normal user: login:giamma password:xxxxx i get the error: can't find root directory (Arrrrgh!) If I login as superuser i have no problem, and i can see that the user directory is present, also the / dir. If I try doing #su giamma I get the error: su:/bin/csh:permission denied. duh! What's happening? Also if I try doing something like #sendmail stop I get the same error at the top. mmm. Let me see. Sure it's a sendmail problem, but where's the mistake? I haven't touched /etc/rc.sendmail, nor /etc/rc.d/sendmail at all. Also /etc/password, /etc/groups look good. I've only tried to modify /boot/loader.conf (hostname, boot verbose, loading modules) but I've not touched sendmail at all! Someone have any idea? I've tried to look at the faq, but I haven't found anything that could fit the problem. What I did? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Greetings, Gianmario. I have a dual-boot Win2K/FreeBSD box and the NTFS partition is also represented by ???. FAT partitions show up as DOS or MS-DOS I believe. I must say installing FreeBSD is fairly easy. I've manage to dual boot with Win2K and FreeBSD. I'm now in the process of trying to configuring my kernel and getting my ports directory up to date via cvsup. I've notice while reading the FreeBSD HandBook 2nd Edition p.178 it was suggested to copy the kernel file to the root directory. Configuring the kernel seems to be straight forward. The problem I have is the following: *cd /usr/src/sys/i386/conf mkdir /root/kernels cp GENERIC /root/kernels/MYKERNEL ln -s /root/kernels/MYKERNEL* I have a problem with the last command. From my understanding and reading through the man pages should it the *ln* command take in 3 paramaters (*ln [option] [source] [dest]*) ? Is it even possible to create a symbolic link with so few parameters? With source as the only argument to ln, it makes a link in the current directory with the name of the source file. So, if your pwd was /usr/src/sys/i386/conf and you committed the last command on that list, it would create a link /usr/src/sys/i386/conf/MYKERNEL -> /root/kernels/MYKERNEL The destination argument is useful for overriding this behavior, but it is not necessary. It is also available at http://people.freebsd.org/~sue/newbies/fak.html FreeBSD-Questions@FreeBSD.ORG is the place to send all questions about installing, configuring, running and using FreeBSD. All help requests are handled by FreeBSD-Questions, including newbies questions. It is particularly important to send all installation questions and answers to FreeBSD-Questions so that they only appear in one place. FreeBSD-Newbies is different. We don't ask for FreeBSD help or answer how-to questions. It is a discussion forum for newbies. FreeBSD-Newbies provides a place for new FreeBSD users to meet and covers any of the activities of newbies that are not already dealt with elsewhere. Examples include helping each other to learn more on our own, finding and using resources, problem solving techniques, how to seek help elsewhere, how to use mailing lists and which lists to use, general chat, making mistakes, boasting, sharing ideas, stories, moral (but not technical) support, and taking an active part in the FreeBSD community. We take our problems and support questions to freebsd-questions, and use freebsd-newbies to meet others who are doing the same things that we do as newbies. We can help people to use the FreeBSD mailing lists and resources, or to interact more productively with the broader FreeBSD community. These are not support questions, and not technical, so we deal with them here. Everyone can help with these new user orientation requests. One of the things we do together is learn more effective ways to find help when we need it. Here are some suggestions: When something doesn't work the way you expect 1. First look at the errata for your release of FreeBSD at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/releases/ for the latest information and security advisories. 2. Search the Handbook, FAQ, and mail archives at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/search/search.html 3. If you still have a question or problem, collect the output of `uname -a' and of any relevant program(s) and email your question to FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. Mailing lists When you have a problem that you can't solve by yourself, there's only one support mailing list and that's FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. FreeBSD-questions helps with installation and basic setup as well as more general and advanced questions. You don't have to actually join freebsd-questions before asking a question there. Replies to your question will normally be sent to you personally as well as to the list. Just make sure you have read and followed the guidelines for posting, because you might find them different to what you're used to. If you do subscribe to freebsd-questions you'll have the advantage of seeing all of the recent questions and their answers. Before you post to FreeBSD-questions, please read the guidelines at http://www.lemis.com/questions.html Many of the people who answer FreeBSD-questions are very knowledgeable, but they get frustrated when they get questions which are difficult to understand. http://www.lemis.com/email.html is worth reading too. If you're not sure that you can follow these guidelines, come back and ask the other newbies for help on how to post an effective question to the support mailing list. Maybe your question has been asked before. If you search the mailing list archives at http://www.freebsd.org/search/search.html first you might get the answer right away. It's always worth trying. Other mailing lists (http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/eresources.html#ERESOURCES-CHARTERS) cover specialised areas and many are more developer-oriented. You'll need to read their charters carefully before participating, but it's probably a good idea to ask on either -newbies or -questions for advice about where to post a more specialised question. FreeBSD-announce is a very low volume read-only list for occasional announcements, such as notice of new releases, and the Really Quick Newsletter. It's worth subscribing to FreeBSD-announce too. Manuals You'll always be expected to show that you have made some effort to use the available documentation before asking for help. That's not always as easy as it sounds! If you know what documentation you need but can't locate it, send a brief query to FreeBSD-questions. If you don't know what you need, always have trouble finding it, or can't make any sense of it when you do, ask some patient newbies to steer you in the right direction. Anyone interested in writing or reviewing documentation for FreeBSD is encouraged to join the FreeBSD Documentation Project. Details are at http://www.freebsd.org/docproj/docproj.html Other resources A resource list is available at http://www.freebsd.org/projects/newbies.html to help new and inexperienced FreeBSD users to find relevant information quickly. It includes books, on line documents and tutorials, and links to web pages that other newbies have found useful for learning. If you have a suggestion for good material to be included, please write to freebsd-newbies and tell us about it. But I have seen people asking questions here! It is quite common for people to send the wrong kind of post to a mailing list. Because we're newbies it'll certainly happen here from time to time. The best thing to do if you see a message that doesn't belong on a list is to ignore it. There's always someone around whose job it is to sort these problems out privately. The posts to the lists go straight through, whatever their content. It is going to be confusing for a little while because we're all newbies so we all make mistakes. That's OK. One thing we're going to see a fair bit is people posting questions, believing they're doing the right thing by posting here as newbies, not realising how it works. If someone answers those questions the situation will snowball. There's nothing wrong with helping someone to redirect their question to freebsd-questions, but please do so gently. There's nothing wrong with the occasional mistake either. So all questions, requests for help, etc still go to freebsd-questions as usual. Ours is more of a discussion group, a place where newbies can relax with other newbies and focus more on our successes than on our temporary imperfection. We can talk about things here that are not allowed on freebsd-questions. We're also a bit freer to make the mistakes that we need to make in order to learn. _________________________________________________________________ Mailing list membership To Subscribe to FreeBSD-Newbies: Use the easy form at http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-newbies to subscribe to the FreeBSD-Newbies mailing list, or to change your subscription details if you are already a member. (I see no reason why samba shouldn't work...) Apache worked for me without any configuration. Connecting to http://127.0.0.1/ showed a default (error) page included with apache. If you're having problems with the config file, the 'apachectl' command is very useful in finding errors/manipulating the daemon. ('apachectl -h' for more information.) Sharing the internet connection was a little more difficult, but not impossible. For me, NATD was the answer. All that really needed to be done was to add some lines to /etc/rc.conf and the kernel. See http://www.FreeBSD.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/network-natd.html for a full explanation. Samba can be complicated, but, again, is not impossible. The documents in /usr/local/share/doc/samba should answer any questions you might have. 'man smb.conf' is also very useful. You'll note that most of my reply here gives no definite answer; you'll have to write to freebsd-questions for technical advice. -newbies is more for chatting, relating experiences, sharing resources, etc., so I try to limit any responses here to pointing out any documents I know of and the proper list. A few last words of advice before you write -questions. First, (this is their rule) try to limit your lines to less than 80 characters, so crappy mail clients will break lines right. Second, you might want to limit specific emails to specific problems, and include more information. (ie. write a single mail about apache and include specifics about what problem you're having; all I really know from the above email is that you can't get them to work.) Well, I wish you good luck. I see no reason that you shouldn't be able to do what you want do. Peace, Clayton PS. If you want to try sticking to your natural language, you might try http://www.FreeBSD.org/support.html#mailing-list to see if there is already lists in your language. I am currently at a loss of how I can get fbsd to recognise the external storage device with the new hard drive in it. Any ideas? Also I dont cant find any reference anywhere in regards to fbsd 4.8 using usb 2.0. So i am assuming that USB 2.0 is not supported/configured for 4.8?
