I've just spent an afternoon fscking with ipfw and natd, so: yes, there is. :-) http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/firewalls.html Also look up the man pages of ipfw, natd and firewall. As an aside, there's ipfilter. You have to rebuild the kernel for either of them to work, I believe. Don't ask me which one is better. I'll just quote Ozzy... For your interest, I've found the documentation on "ipfw + natd + a default rule of deny" lacking/non-existant, or I haven't been looking in all the right places (I've got money set on the latter ;-). I've got it running now and will probably double check with freebsd-questions@ once I find the time. HTH and good luck... Suggestion: copy /usr/src/sys/[arch]/conf/GENERIC to ~/MYKERNEL (your regular user's homedir); in /usr/src/sys/[arch]/conf issue "ln -s ~/MYKERNEL". Now you can edit your kernel config logged in as your regular user. You don't want to run around as root if you don't have to, so get sudo up and running. Edit MYKERNEL, add: options IPFIREWALL # required for IPFW options IPFIREWALL_VERBOSE # optional; logging options IPFIREWALL_VERBOSE_LIMIT=10 # optional; don't get too many log entries options IPDIVERT # needed for natd See the Handbook for building that kernel. I don't know if the buildkernel/installkernel sequence works if you have only installed the kernel source. HTH... Nico P.S. Read the Handbook. Do it now. It is good for you. :-) From owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Sep 1 09:15:53 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7B72F16A4BF for ; Mon, 1 Sep 2003 09:15:53 -0700 (PDT) Received: from smtpout.mac.com (A17-250-248-89.apple.com [17.250.248.89]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DE58D43FEC for ; Mon, 1 Sep 2003 09:15:52 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from gdelfino@mac.com) Received: from mac.com (smtpin08-en2 [10.13.10.153]) by smtpout.mac.com (Xserve/MantshX 2.0) with ESMTP id h81GFq9D027247 for ; Mon, 1 Sep 2003 09:15:52 -0700 (PDT) Received: from 192.168.1.14 ([200.62.15.2]) (authenticated bits=0) by mac.com (Xserve/8.12.9/MantshX 2.0) with SMTP id h81GFild022228 for ; Mon, 1 Sep 2003 09:15:49 -0700 (PDT) Date: Mon, 1 Sep 2003 12:15:46 -0400 From: Gustavo Delfino To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org X-Priority: 3 Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Mailer: Mailsmith 2.0.1 (Blindsider) Subject: Perl 5.8 - make test problem (shmget. msgget) X-BeenThere: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Gathering place for new users List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 01 Sep 2003 16:15:53 -0000 I am trying to upgrade Perl from version 5.005_03 to 5.8 on a 4.8-RELEASE FreeBSD VPS (virtual private server). Depends. In most cases, you have one version at a specific time, but things like samba, there are the 2.2 and 3.0 simultaneously available. But I have to admit that I never dug through the vast amount of makefiles. in each part of the installation process via ports, you can set some parameters, if you want. > > I haven't come across this in the handbook, but I may have missed it. > There may be other sources of documentation I've missed, too -- This is mostly make.conf and the whole concept of makefiles... There is nearly only digging through man pages or the mailing list archives. The files in /usr/ports/Mk/ are also very useful, as they cover all the options available to the makefile, specifically bsd.port.mk. On keeping a private ports tree, afaik, there's no reason this should be impossible. But, you might want to copy the contents of the Mk directory to your private tree (changing any path references from the old port directory) so you would have the same options available. You'll also probably want to specify and create a directory for packages, if you're going to test them. I've got a C82 printer, and it prints just fine. My suggestion is to use cups. It's much easier to set up a printer with cups than with traditional lpd. The only problem you need to be aware of with newer USB Epson color printers is to choose the /dev/unlpt0 device. The cups manual has a lot of good information in it. Normal CD like read-only access to a USB CD-RW is simplicity. It acts as just another USB mass storage device. Write-access is a whole different story though. Looking at the 5.1 release notes, all the USB CD-R/RW devices are noted as being read-only. There may be a port that can handle USB CD-RW, so you may want to browse around in the ports. Also ask on -questions or -hardware or search their archives. They are much more informed people than we. Yesterday someone put me in charge of a server (it seems that is a Firewall) with FreeBSD 4.2-Release version, the first thing I have told to do is to change de IP address and the defaultrouter, so I edited the next files: /etc/hosts /etc/rc.conf And I rebooted the server so that the changes take effect. The first thing I did was to check if the changes were made, with the "ipconfig -a" command, and yes, the changes were made. I only changed the IP address of one of the two interfaces (xI1). I don't know why but I keep receiving the next errors: egw ipmon[55]:17:30:47.435327 xI1 @0:16 b 146.250.4.9 ---> 146.250.4.1 PR icmp len 20 21504 icmp 8/0 OUT egw ipmon[55]:17:30:47.435327 xI1 @0:16 b 146.250.4.9 ---> 146.250.17.4,53 PR udp len 20 21504 icmp 8/0 OUT egw /kernel:arp:146.250.4.1 is on xI1 but got reply from on xI0 Where egw is the hostname 146.250.4.9 is the IP address of the interface xI1 146.250.4.1 is the defaultrouter 192.168.200.1 is the IP address of the interface xl0 This server has 2 network interfaces xI0 and xI1. It is also available at http://people.freebsd.org/~sue/newbies/fak.html FreeBSD-Questions@FreeBSD.ORG is the place to send all questions about installing, configuring, running and using FreeBSD. All help requests are handled by FreeBSD-Questions, including newbies questions. It is particularly important to send all installation questions and answers to FreeBSD-Questions so that they only appear in one place. FreeBSD-Newbies is different. We don't ask for FreeBSD help or answer how-to questions. It is a discussion forum for newbies. FreeBSD-Newbies provides a place for new FreeBSD users to meet and covers any of the activities of newbies that are not already dealt with elsewhere. Examples include helping each other to learn more on our own, finding and using resources, problem solving techniques, how to seek help elsewhere, how to use mailing lists and which lists to use, general chat, making mistakes, boasting, sharing ideas, stories, moral (but not technical) support, and taking an active part in the FreeBSD community. We take our problems and support questions to freebsd-questions, and use freebsd-newbies to meet others who are doing the same things that we do as newbies. We can help people to use the FreeBSD mailing lists and resources, or to interact more productively with the broader FreeBSD community. These are not support questions, and not technical, so we deal with them here. Everyone can help with these new user orientation requests. One of the things we do together is learn more effective ways to find help when we need it. Here are some suggestions: When something doesn't work the way you expect 1. First look at the errata for your release of FreeBSD at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/releases/ for the latest information and security advisories. 2. Search the Handbook, FAQ, and mail archives at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/search/search.html 3. If you still have a question or problem, collect the output of `uname -a' and of any relevant program(s) and email your question to FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. Mailing lists When you have a problem that you can't solve by yourself, there's only one support mailing list and that's FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. FreeBSD-questions helps with installation and basic setup as well as more general and advanced questions. You don't have to actually join freebsd-questions before asking a question there. Replies to your question will normally be sent to you personally as well as to the list. Just make sure you have read and followed the guidelines for posting, because you might find them different to what you're used to. If you do subscribe to freebsd-questions you'll have the advantage of seeing all of the recent questions and their answers. Before you post to FreeBSD-questions, please read the guidelines at http://www.lemis.com/questions.html Many of the people who answer FreeBSD-questions are very knowledgeable, but they get frustrated when they get questions which are difficult to understand. http://www.lemis.com/email.html is worth reading too. If you're not sure that you can follow these guidelines, come back and ask the other newbies for help on how to post an effective question to the support mailing list. Maybe your question has been asked before. If you search the mailing list archives at http://www.freebsd.org/search/search.html first you might get the answer right away. It's always worth trying. Other mailing lists (http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/eresources.html#ERESOURCES-CHARTERS) cover specialised areas and many are more developer-oriented. You'll need to read their charters carefully before participating, but it's probably a good idea to ask on either -newbies or -questions for advice about where to post a more specialised question. FreeBSD-announce is a very low volume read-only list for occasional announcements, such as notice of new releases, and the Really Quick Newsletter. It's worth subscribing to FreeBSD-announce too. Manuals You'll always be expected to show that you have made some effort to use the available documentation before asking for help. That's not always as easy as it sounds! If you know what documentation you need but can't locate it, send a brief query to FreeBSD-questions. If you don't know what you need, always have trouble finding it, or can't make any sense of it when you do, ask some patient newbies to steer you in the right direction. Anyone interested in writing or reviewing documentation for FreeBSD is encouraged to join the FreeBSD Documentation Project. Details are at http://www.freebsd.org/docproj/docproj.html Other resources A resource list is available at http://www.freebsd.org/projects/newbies.html to help new and inexperienced FreeBSD users to find relevant information quickly. It includes books, on line documents and tutorials, and links to web pages that other newbies have found useful for learning. If you have a suggestion for good material to be included, please write to freebsd-newbies and tell us about it. But I have seen people asking questions here! It is quite common for people to send the wrong kind of post to a mailing list. Because we're newbies it'll certainly happen here from time to time. The best thing to do if you see a message that doesn't belong on a list is to ignore it. There's always someone around whose job it is to sort these problems out privately. The posts to the lists go straight through, whatever their content. It is going to be confusing for a little while because we're all newbies so we all make mistakes. That's OK. One thing we're going to see a fair bit is people posting questions, believing they're doing the right thing by posting here as newbies, not realising how it works. If someone answers those questions the situation will snowball. There's nothing wrong with helping someone to redirect their question to freebsd-questions, but please do so gently. There's nothing wrong with the occasional mistake either. So all questions, requests for help, etc still go to freebsd-questions as usual. Ours is more of a discussion group, a place where newbies can relax with other newbies and focus more on our successes than on our temporary imperfection. We can talk about things here that are not allowed on freebsd-questions. We're also a bit freer to make the mistakes that we need to make in order to learn. _________________________________________________________________ Mailing list membership To Subscribe to FreeBSD-Newbies: Use the easy form at http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-newbies to subscribe to the FreeBSD-Newbies mailing list, or to change your subscription details if you are already a member. Fair enough. > please what can i do. You haven't really given us enough information to answer your question. Firstly: * find out how your mail is supposed to be sent (i.e. where is the mail server) * ask the right list - I'd suspect that's questions@freebsd.org - DON'T put an ALL CAPS subject > I have checked to see if sendmail is enabled and it > is. That's possibly your problem. The Sendmail web page (http://www.sendmail.org/) has some FAQs that may be of help. DSL -- There are no other guests, just you and me... I'm in love with, surely you know that?
