I have a powerbook from work now and would like to get BSD installed on it using an external firewire drive. -- John Baldwin <>< http://www.FreeBSD.org/~jhb/ "Power Users Use the Power to Serve!" - http://www.FreeBSD.org/ From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Aug 28 02:29:01 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E125C16A4BF for ; Thu, 28 Aug 2003 02:29:01 -0700 (PDT) Received: from chuggalug.clues.com (chuggalug.demon.co.uk [62.49.17.236]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CC44A43FF3 for ; Thu, 28 Aug 2003 02:29:00 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from geoffb@chuggalug.clues.com) Received: from chuggalug.clues.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by chuggalug.clues.com (8.12.9/8.12.8) with ESMTP id h7S9OwVp096114 for ; Thu, 28 Aug 2003 09:24:58 GMT (envelope-from geoffb@chuggalug.clues.com) Received: (from geoffb@localhost) by chuggalug.clues.com (8.12.9/8.12.8/Submit) id h7S9Ov4A096113 for ppc@freebsd.org; Thu, 28 Aug 2003 09:24:57 GMT Date: Thu, 28 Aug 2003 09:24:57 +0000 From: Geoff Buckingham To: ppc@freebsd.org Message-ID: <20030828092457.GA96069@chuggalug.clues.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.1i Subject: Tivo Series 1 (PowerPC 403GCX) X-BeenThere: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the PowerPC List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 28 Aug 2003 09:29:02 -0000 I notice there are a lot of 'diskless' series 1 tivos on ebay ATM. They even seem to have the correct cables for a serial console... However I suspect that the IBM PowerPC 403GCX and 'odd' hardware config is likely to make them an unrealistic porting target at this point in time. Could some one confirm? If you read the sheer volume of hacks that the tivo folks did to make linux work on it (http://www.tivo.com/linux/) you might get a little more scared. Dont get me wrong, it would be a fantastic 'fun' project, but certainly is going to qualify as a hell of a challenge.
