Unfortunately I'm really missing a lot of the little things from FreeBSD (my other box is a P2-450 running FreeBSD-current). So now I've got a few questions: Is FreeBSD even bootable on any old world machines? If not, what's standing in the way? The boot loader? Is there an XCOFF version of the boot loader? Lack of driver support? Cross building from ia32 seems to be broken (looked like it died in the crypto stuff with gcc not being able to find any spare ia32 registers...), is this a known issue? - alex From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Sep 10 12:31:23 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1DC2116A4BF for ; Wed, 10 Sep 2003 12:31:23 -0700 (PDT) Received: from dragon.nuxi.com (trang.nuxi.com [66.93.134.19]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 80FED43FE9 for ; Wed, 10 Sep 2003 12:31:21 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from obrien@dragon.nuxi.com) Received: from dragon.nuxi.com (obrien@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by dragon.nuxi.com (8.12.9/8.12.9) with ESMTP id h8AJVJnW077837; Wed, 10 Sep 2003 12:31:20 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from obrien@dragon.nuxi.com) Received: (from obrien@localhost) by dragon.nuxi.com (8.12.9/8.12.9/Submit) id h8AJVJqM077836; Wed, 10 Sep 2003 12:31:19 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from obrien) Date: Wed, 10 Sep 2003 12:31:19 -0700 From: "David O'Brien" To: Alex Zepeda Message-ID: <20030910193119.GA77756@dragon.nuxi.com> References: <20030910052443.GA26552@blarf.homeip.net> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20030910052443.GA26552@blarf.homeip.net> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.1i X-Operating-System: FreeBSD 5.1-CURRENT Organization: The NUXI BSD Group X-Pgp-Rsa-Fingerprint: B7 4D 3E E9 11 39 5F A3 90 76 5D 69 58 D9 98 7A X-Pgp-Rsa-Keyid: 1024/34F9F9D5 cc: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: How are things looking? However, if you CVSup and build a new x86 world, I know for a fact you can cross build PowerPC. I did this just last night. All I can suggest is to CVSup on your build host, do 'make world' on it, then do 'make make -DNO_WERROR TARGET_ARCH=powerpc buildworld'. I build a PowerPC cross buildworld just fine 2 days ago. I just unset C_INCLUDE_PATH and CPLUS_INCLUDE_PATH and it looks like it will go through the world just fine (with -DNO_WERROR of course). - alex From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Sep 13 16:35:21 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 768F016A4BF; Sat, 13 Sep 2003 16:35:21 -0700 (PDT) Received: from dommail.onthenet.com.au (dommail.OntheNet.com.au [203.13.70.57]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8302343F93; Sat, 13 Sep 2003 16:35:19 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from peterg@ptree32.com.au) Received: from dommail.onthenet.com.au (localhost.onthenet.com.au [127.0.0.1]) by dommail.onthenet.com.au (Mirapoint Messaging Server MOS 3.2.4-GA) with ESMTP id ABM20845; Sun, 14 Sep 2003 09:35:15 +1000 (EST) From: Message-Id: <200309132335.ABM20845@dommail.onthenet.com.au> Received: from 68.166.4.126 by dommail.onthenet.com.au (Mirapoint Messaging Server MOS 3.2.4-GA) with HTTP/1.1; Sun, 14 Sep 2003 09:35:15 +1000 Date: Sun, 14 Sep 2003 09:35:15 +1000 To: Alex Zepeda X-Mailer: Webmail Mirapoint Direct 3.2.4-GA MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit cc: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: How are things looking? Cool, what about the kernel? psim/ata_iobus.c and powermac/ata_macio.c need sys/taskqueue.h to be included somewhere. Once I got that far, the kernel failed to link because pmap_extract_and_hold was nowhere to be found. I just checked the cvs-all list, and it looks like nothing ppc related has been committed since I last cvsup'd (last night/this morning). With a quick copy and paste (seems like that pmap function is really machine independent), I got the kernel to link and such. Unfortunately the netbsd loader didn't seem to like the FreeBSD kernel (it just hung while loading it)... or does the FreeBSD kernel output to a serial console instead of the OF framebuffer? You know, after dealing with this horrid NetBSD pkgsrc tree, I'm drooling over the concept of getting FreeBSD running even somewhat on a Mac :)) - alex From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Sep 13 21:38:25 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3280216A4BF for ; Sat, 13 Sep 2003 21:38:25 -0700 (PDT) Received: from dommail.onthenet.com.au (dommail.OntheNet.com.au [203.13.70.57]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B5F3B43FDF for ; Sat, 13 Sep 2003 21:38:23 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from peterg@ptree32.com.au) Received: from dommail.onthenet.com.au (localhost.onthenet.com.au [127.0.0.1]) by dommail.onthenet.com.au (Mirapoint Messaging Server MOS 3.2.4-GA) with ESMTP id ABM22703; Sun, 14 Sep 2003 14:38:09 +1000 (EST) From: Message-Id: <200309140438.ABM22703@dommail.onthenet.com.au> Received: from 68.166.4.126 by dommail.onthenet.com.au (Mirapoint Messaging Server MOS 3.2.4-GA) with HTTP/1.1; Sun, 14 Sep 2003 14:38:09 +1000 Date: Sun, 14 Sep 2003 14:38:09 +1000 To: Alex Zepeda X-Mailer: Webmail Mirapoint Direct 3.2.4-GA MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit cc: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: How are things looking? It only understands XCOFF binaries. So I tried using objdump and fixcoff on the NetBSD side to convert the FreeBSD loader, and that didn't work. Tried booting the kernel directly (after converting it to XCOFF of course) and that didn't work either. FWIW I'm using the binutils on my mac and not anything that may have been generated by the cross buildworld I guess I'll try stripping the binaries before running them through objdump and fixcoff. 'Course I'm not having much luck with those awful pkgsrc tools either :)) - alex
