For the few things I do, binary installs work fine, and have given me absolutely no issues. I now want to do a little more, specifically some imbedded device stuff on a Soekris 4521. The FAQs I have found so far all talk about compiling everything and removing what I do not need, or using PicoBSD. Neither of these solutions will work for me. I have a Mini PCI a/b/g WiFi card that uses the Atheros chipset, which requires the CURRENT tree for driver support. . . . the things I learned AFTER buying things are a little more than I expected. What I have tried so far is doing a 5.c CURRENT build on a text box, and I intend to do the PXE boot from that box. In fact, when I was trying to get 4.9 to work, I did boot off of PXE just fine. I just did not have support for my Mini PCI card. When I did a buildworld on my testing box, I ran out of hard drive space. It has 2 GB, which should be HUGE is comparison to the CF this will eventually live on. What I have been looking for is a way to download and build less. Now, when I do a binary install on a regular system, I have the option of putting in base, compatibity (1x to 4x), crypto, dict, doc, games, info, man, catman, profiles, src, ports, local, perl, and xfree. When I look at the source tree it has base, contrib, gnu, etc, games, include, lib, libexec, release, bin, sbin, scrypto, share, skerb5, ssecure, sys, tools, ubin, and usbin. This has left me at a loss. Since the choices are not the same, how do I compile just a minimal install? Obviously someone, somewhere has a list of what goes where, or there would be no such thing as a minimal install. Does anyone have a link to a FAQ/DOC/README/MAN that lists this information? If one exists, I have missed it in the last few weeks of looking. --Eric From owner-freebsd-small@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Dec 12 04:45:37 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-small@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 586B616A4CE for ; Fri, 12 Dec 2003 04:45:37 -0800 (PST) Received: from mail.yazzy.org (yazzy.org [217.8.140.3]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A3D8C43D32 for ; Fri, 12 Dec 2003 04:45:35 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from freebsd@yazzy.org) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by mail.yazzy.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4BB5E39820 for ; Fri, 12 Dec 2003 13:45:31 +0100 (CET) Received: from mail.yazzy.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (urukhai.yazzy.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id 70048-04 for ; Fri, 12 Dec 2003 13:45:30 +0100 (CET) Received: from localhost (unknown [62.92.122.51]) by mail.yazzy.org (Postfix) with SMTP id BB5163981F for ; Fri, 12 Dec 2003 13:45:28 +0100 (CET) Date: Fri, 12 Dec 2003 13:43:57 +0100 From: Martin Jessa To: freebsd-small@freebsd.org Message-Id: <20031212134357.3359b227.freebsd@yazzy.org> In-Reply-To: <028f01c3c064$47a7fcc0$0fce75d8@cybertime.net> References: <028f01c3c064$47a7fcc0$0fce75d8@cybertime.net> Organization: WRS ASA X-Mailer: Sylpheed version 0.9.3claws (GTK+ 1.2.10; i386-portbld-freebsd5.1) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Subject: Re: Making less X-BeenThere: freebsd-small@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Dedicated and Embedded Systems List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 12 Dec 2003 12:45:37 -0000 Hi. We have managed to make a set of shell scripts that do just that, automatically. It's correct that you need CURRENT to be able to build support for ath. I am on a assignement now working on a WISP but when i come back I will try to update the www.wifibsd.org site and put all the scripts there and write a howto about all the necessarily steps required to build your own version of it. As I told you before, join us on irc.freenode.net , #wifibsd channel and maybe we could help you there. Been trying, but have not had too much luck yet. Main problem seems to be that I am jumping into two things at once, compiling custom FreeBSD installs, and micro installs. Ah, I did not mention my CF size in my original post. When I bought my Soekris units (2 for experimenting), I also ordered 128 MB CF cards so I would have a ton of room to play with. Eventually I would like to fit things in the under 16 MB category. Seeing how much m0n0wall did in 5 MB, and YazzY and masta did in just under 15 MB, I think 16 MB is a realistic eventual goal. --Eric From owner-freebsd-small@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Dec 12 12:20:11 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-small@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 91AF616A4CF for ; Fri, 12 Dec 2003 12:20:11 -0800 (PST) Received: from transport.cksoft.de (transport.cksoft.de [62.111.66.27]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 16C5843D37 for ; Fri, 12 Dec 2003 12:20:10 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from bzeeb-lists@lists.zabbadoz.net) Received: from transport.cksoft.de (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by transport.cksoft.de (Postfix) with ESMTP id D4E4C1FF905; Fri, 12 Dec 2003 21:20:08 +0100 (CET) Received: by transport.cksoft.de (Postfix, from userid 66) id 394701FF903; Fri, 12 Dec 2003 21:20:07 +0100 (CET) Received: by mail.int.zabbadoz.net (Postfix, from userid 1060) id 85820153EB; Fri, 12 Dec 2003 20:17:03 +0000 (UTC) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by mail.int.zabbadoz.net (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7B96115380; Fri, 12 Dec 2003 20:17:03 +0000 (UTC) Date: Fri, 12 Dec 2003 20:17:03 +0000 (UTC) From: "Bjoern A. Try looking at http://www.neon1.net/ There are two areas that you will find interesting. One is the "miniBSD" project, which was to do what you've been talking about (reducing the FreeBSD footprint). The second is "m0n0BSD", which builds on the above to create a FreeBSD suitable for embedded systems booting off Compact Flash. -crl -- Chad R. I have already looked at both in the last weeks. MiniBSD has the issue of compile everything, then remove what you do not need. As noted before, my prototyping system has a 2 GB HD, and this process runs it out of space. The MiniBSD document even comments on this problem, "So here's a guide on how to start if you're looking for the same thing. I assume that you already have enough knowledge about FreeBSD to decide on your own, for example, which device files or binaries you need. Note also that this is not a complete guide, and once you're done with it you'll still need to customize your miniBSD to render it useful. I assume you're trying to achieve the same goal - installing FreeBSD on a net4501 - but with a few changes this guide also applies to other installations (e.g. on CD-ROM, hard disk, ...)." I do not know what is needed, and not needed, so the FAQ does not apply very well to me. However, when I went through it, I did find it useful for learning how to PXE boot. The m0n0(wall|BSD) systems have the issue that they are built on 4.x, which does not have Atheros chipset support. They also do not offer much practical information for compiling a smaller FreeBSD install, but they do cover a smaller kernel very nicely. This is why I am looking for some reference to cutting down BSD before compile, especially one that is applicable to 5.x. --Eric From owner-freebsd-small@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Dec 12 15:17:45 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-small@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 781B116A4CE for ; Fri, 12 Dec 2003 15:17:45 -0800 (PST) Received: from imgate01.cybertime.net (imgate01a.cybertime.net [216.117.206.24]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9434143D33 for ; Fri, 12 Dec 2003 15:17:43 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from hostmaster@cybertime.net) Received: from cybertime.net (mail.cybertime.net [216.117.209.200]) C4394D713E for ; Fri, 12 Dec 2003 15:26:01 -0800 (PST) Received: from techoffice [216.117.206.15] by cybertime.net (SMTPD32-8.04) id AC97DCF9007A; Fri, 12 Dec 2003 15:17:43 -0800 Message-ID: <028101c3c107$84f64610$0fce75d8@cybertime.net> From: "Cybertime Hostmaster" To: References: <028f01c3c064$47a7fcc0$0fce75d8@cybertime.net> <06F0B516-2CB9-11D8-90A6-000393B61F2E@ncsa.uiuc.edu> <001501c3c0e0$c763a730$0fce75d8@cybertime.net> <017001c3c0e8$ccd1c0f0$0fce75d8@cybertime.net> Date: Fri, 12 Dec 2003 15:27:33 -0800 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2800.1158 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2800.1165 Subject: Re: Making less X-BeenThere: freebsd-small@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Dedicated and Embedded Systems List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 12 Dec 2003 23:17:45 -0000 > I don't know the size this will have nut you may also check > http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-current/2003-September/011205.html While a remove after system, it does at least say some of what is not needed. Perhaps back-porting the Atheros driver to 4.9 isn't that hard. The FreeBSD organization itself doesn't consider 5.x suitable for production. Or if you want a different make.conf than fr your base system you may use make buildworld __MAKE_CONF=/path/to/another/make.conf This is undocumented (I guess) but works on current. You will still need about 450 MB for in /usr/obj for building. depending on your needs you should be able to tune something. I think the script from phk passes options on comamnd line. I have once started with the one at the end of the mail by coping the one from my base system and adjusted it to my needs (leaving a lot of unneeded things like perl and papersize, ...) It will still give you about 40 MB w/o a kernel and /etc installed; about 58MB with. You then need to remove the things mentioned p.ex. in phk's script. I am using a Makefile hierachie framework to be more selective and also replace things like master.passwd ssh keys etc .... Also easily doable with a shell script. After installing a kernel do not forget to remove all unneeded kernel modules (will save about 10 MB depending on what you need). Last you may also want to strip kernel etc which is not stripped. After that with all pam*, far to many programms and postifx, racoon and dhcprelay loader and pxeboot ,...... I can easily get down to 22MB. (postfix raccon and dhcprelay make about 4.5MB of those). Being a bit more selective you should be able to easily get it down to 12-16 MB. -- Bjoern A. No, that process is documented. What is not document is a list of required to make FreeBSD run. > I have once started with the one at the end of the mail by coping the > one from my base system and adjusted it to my needs (leaving a lot of > unneeded things like perl and papersize, ...) The make.conf you sent is exactly what I have been needeing. A point of reference to some of the things that can be left out. That will certainly get me a lot closer to what I need in the long run. --Eric
