I have been experencing some filesystem problems for the last month or so. I was running 4.8-STABLE and updated to 5.1-RELEASE-p2. While I was running 4.8 and I tried to run a command that required hard disk activity, the process would 'hang' and I would no longer be able to ssh or telnet in. I would get stuck after typing in my login. Running 5.1 is a different story. I did a low level format of the drive then I did a clean install of 5.1-RELEASE and cvsup'd to -p2. Every time I do this, it's great for a day or so then it acts up. Before after it started, even if I rebooted it would immediately start up. On 5.1, it is only hanging for that process and everything else is fine. I can still login, webserver responds, etc. Here is a little info: FreeBSD devel.neoninternet.net 5.1-RELEASE-p2 FreeBSD 5.1-RELEASE-p2 #0: Sat Aug 23 20:12:41 PDT 2003 kevin@devel.ph.cox.net:/usr/src/sys/i386/compile/SLURPEE i386 CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2600+ (2086.51-MHz 686-class CPU) real memory = 1073676288 (1023 MB) ad0: 117246MB [238216/16/63] at ata0-master UDMA133 root 1173 0.0 0.1 1436 916 p3 D+ 6:38PM 0:00.00 man vmstat root 784 0.0 0.1 752 636 d0 D 4:34PM 0:00.02 make all DIRPRFX=i386/libi386/ root 847 0.0 0.0 312 212 d0 D 4:34PM 0:00.00 (cc) root 848 0.0 0.3 4104 3488 d0 D 4:34PM 0:00.01 (cc1) root 849 0.0 0.1 928 668 d0 D 4:34PM 0:00.00 /usr/bin/as -o comconsole.o - last pid: 1252; load averages: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00 up 0+02:37:22 19:04:48 64 processes: 1 running, 63 sleeping CPU states: 0.0% user, 0.0% nice, 0.0% system, 0.0% interrupt, 100% idle Mem: 34M Active, 23M Inact, 38M Wired, 204K Cache, 22M Buf, 906M Free Swap: 2048M Total, 2048M Free devel# vmstat procs memory page disks faults cpu r b w avm fre flt re pi po fr sr ad0 da0 in sy cs us sy id 1 7 0 144612 928056 16 0 0 0 9 0 0 0 331 0 254 0 0 100 Anyone have any suggestions? Snapshots? X-BeenThere: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Production branch of FreeBSD source code List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 31 Aug 2003 18:09:16 -0000 As mentioned earlier, I needed to create a few FreeBSD systems, with all of the latest security updates, this week. (The effort extended into the weekend, for reasons that I'll explain below.) Here's a somewhat long-winded (but, hopefully, useful) account of how I did it and some of the pitfalls I encountered. The first thing I did was create a 4.8-RELEASE system using the standard install. I then brought in the "freebsd-update" package to update the system, which should (in theory) have nuked all of the known security holes in the base install. Alas, what I didn't realize at first (though I should have) was that the package was going to try to update "immutable" files. It couldn't do this, of course, because I'd installed with the "maximum" security settings, which set "securelevel" to 2. It failed to update those files, but gave no warning that it had failed; it was a good thing I noticed. So, I changed /etc/rc.conf, rebooted, and ran freebsd-update again. Alas, freebsd-update told me that the system was fully updated and did nothing. I had to use the "rollback" option to undo all previous changes, and then reapply them, to update the system. It then occurred to me: What would one do if the freebsd-update package itself had been linked with a buggy library? (The package collection, as I've already mentioned, isn't updated in response to security problems, and the package was dated July.) My goal was, after all, to get all buggy code off of the machine, and updated binary packages aren't available between releases. So, the only way I could see to avoid this potential problem was to remove the freebsd-update package and rebuild it as a port if I wanted to use it again. The pkg_delete command issued a warning, however, complaining that it couldn't delete the directory /usr/local/freebsd-update. So, I nuked the directory by hand. (Will this cause future problems? I guess I'll see.) Next, it was time to bring in ported software. Because updated binary packages weren't available, I had to install ALL the ported software I wanted to bring in as ports, not packages. A much slower and messier procedure. Before I did this, I decided that it would be a good idea to update all of my ports. This, of course, required cvsup. And this created a Catch-22. You see, because no updated binary package was available, and I had to update my ports to build the latest version of cvsup, I needed to start by using the old one. Which raised the question: Should I use the old (potentially buggy) binary package to update my ports? Or build the older port of cvsup, use it to update all of my ports (including itself), uninstall it, and then rebuild it if I wanted to use it again? I decided that since it's never a good idea to try uninstalling a port that's been updated, since the uninstall can fail due to the update. (This is another problem that ports have which packages don't, by the way.) So, I realized that the best course of action wasto install cvsup as a binary package (running a small risk of problems if it had been linked with a buggy library), use it to update the ports, and then delete the old binary package. Which I did. Next, I decided that since I'd be building everything from ports until the next release, one of the ports I'd better build first was the cvsup utility itself. What a mess! The build brought in tons of other stuff (including Modula-3, gmake, and many other dependencies). Worse still, it included megabytes of GPLed source code, of which we don't want ANY on our systems for legal reasons. (We really don't want GPLed binaries, either, but the lack of availability of BSD-licensed alternatives -- and the fact that FreeBSD is utterly dependent upon some of them -- forces us to live with a few of these for now.) I had to clean up, removing the source after the build. I then had to build everything else I wanted to bring in from a port. Also very messy. In the end, I managed to get an updated system going, but it wasn't graceful. And a novice user (or even one who was more advanced but hadn't played with FreeBSD) certainly wasn't going to be able to do it. And it's a good thing I had lots of disk space. (I really DIDN'T have the time to go through the whole procedure, and so had to give up a chunk of my holiday weekend.) Bottom line: Updates to the binary packages are an absolute necessity between releases. Without them, creating a secure system between releases is a nightmare... and a novice or newcomer just plain couldn't do it. --Brett From owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Aug 31 11:39:58 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BA5DE16A4BF for ; Sun, 31 Aug 2003 11:39:58 -0700 (PDT) Received: from pd4mo2so.prod.shaw.ca (shawidc-mo1.cg.shawcable.net [24.71.223.10]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7E4DE43FFB for ; Sun, 31 Aug 2003 11:39:57 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from colin.percival@wadham.ox.ac.uk) Received: from pd5mr3so.prod.shaw.ca (pd5mr3so-qfe3.prod.shaw.ca [10.0.141.144]) by l-daemon (iPlanet Messaging Server 5.2 HotFix 1.16 (built May 14 2003)) with ESMTP id <0HKH00233YIK24@l-daemon> for stable@freebsd.org; Sun, 31 Aug 2003 12:39:56 -0600 (MDT) Received: from pn2ml7so.prod.shaw.ca (pn2ml7so-qfe0.prod.shaw.ca [10.0.121.151]) by l-daemon (iPlanet Messaging Server 5.2 HotFix 1.16 (built May 14 2003)) with ESMTP id <0HKH00EDCYIKJS@l-daemon> for stable@freebsd.org; Sun, 31 Aug 2003 12:39:56 -0600 (MDT) Received: from piii600.wadham.ox.ac.uk (h24-87-233-42.vc.shawcable.net [24.87.233.42]) by l-daemon (iPlanet Messaging Server 5.2 HotFix 1.16 (built May 14 2003)) with ESMTP id <0HKH00I9SYII44@l-daemon> for stable@freebsd.org; Sun, 31 Aug 2003 12:39:56 -0600 (MDT) Date: Sun, 31 Aug 2003 11:37:12 -0700 From: Colin Percival In-reply-to: <4.3.2.7.2.20030830184324.03a13a50@localhost> X-Sender: cperciva@popserver.sfu.ca To: Brett Glass , Colin Percival , stable@freebsd.org Message-id: <5.0.2.1.1.20030831111519.01c8c728@popserver.sfu.ca> MIME-version: 1.0 X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Version 5.0.2 Content-type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT References: <5.0.2.1.1.20030828103403.02d683a8@popserver.sfu.ca> <200308280638.AAA19221@lariat.org> Subject: Re: Need to build some systems this week. FreeBSD Update is stateless. It keeps old files available for rollback purposes, but it does not "remember" that it has updated a file. If it decided that nothing needed to be updated, it did so after checking that the MD5 hashes of the currently installed files were correct. In short, provided that you haven't rebuilt the world locally, if FreeBSD Update reports "No updates available", your system is definitely up to date. >It then occurred to me: What would one do if the freebsd-update package >itself had been linked with a buggy library? I disagree that it should not produce a warning[1], but it *does* *not* *matter* whether a warning should or should not be produced. Gcc *does* give a warning on that code, and those warnings can be quite annoying. Applying the patch I posted will stop gcc from issuing the annoying warnings and has no other effects. It might not be the "correct" way of fixing the problem (the problem being that gcc issues lots of annoying and useless warnings on the code in cdefs.h when compiling perfectly fine programs) but I haven't seen anybody propose any other solution that is "better". Is there some *actual* problem with the patch I posted which would prevent it from being applied to RELENG_4 ? (Other than the objection of "it shouldn't be neccessary, gcc shouldn't give a warning on that code" which is irrelevant since gcc does issue a warning.) The patch is: a) Perfectly legal C b) Has no harmful sideeffects c) Solves a problem (getting rid of annoying, useless, warnings) d) Is arguably better style than the previous code (this is most certainly arguable, since we are essentially arguing about it right now, but since several different, reasonable, opinions obviously exist it is a fairly good indication that there is no "right" way to do this and my points a)-c) above should be given more weight than what somebody thinks the "right" programming style is. There are three other possible "solutions", each of which I consider to be much worse: a) Do nothing. Accept that gcc will spew out lots of annoying, useless warnings when compiling several ports. b) Change the compiler flags used by all the affected ports, so that they don't have the warning enabled. (I.e. remove -Wundef from the flags used by the affected ports.) c) Change the documented behaviour of gcc so it doesn't issue a warning for this case. Of these b) is the only option that I would consider to be somewhat acceptable and that would probably entail a lot of work. [1] I think that relying on the fact that undefined preprocessor constants is replaced by the value 0 in preprocessor expressions, although legal, is lousy programming practice and should be discouraged. Gcc certainly should issue that warning when invoked with -Wundef since that is what that option is documented to do. -- Erik Trulsson ertr1013@student.uu.se From owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Aug 31 12:44:43 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 067A316A4BF for ; Sun, 31 Aug 2003 12:44:43 -0700 (PDT) Received: from lariat.org (lariat.org [63.229.157.2]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EF5AD43F3F for ; Sun, 31 Aug 2003 12:44:41 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from brett@lariat.org) Received: from mustang.lariat.org (IDENT:ppp1000.lariat.org@lariat.org [63.229.157.2]) by lariat.org (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id NAA02592; Sun, 31 Aug 2003 13:44:33 -0600 (MDT) X-message-flag: Warning! That's good to know, though it didn't solve the other problems I mentioned. Or a couple I just encountered. First, when I built cvsupdate as a port, I found that the commands "make clean" and "make distclean" removed the detritus left behind by creating cvsupdate itself, but did not nuke the junk that was left behind as the system built other ports on which that one depended. Going around and deleting everything manually (there was no automatic mechanism) was a chore. Then came another zinger. One of the people who will be using the system wants KDE on it. (Not my choice, since it's GPLed, but he's the client.) So, after rebuilding cvsupdate as a port, I went to /stand/sysinstall to install KDE. Two problems here. First was that KDE was installed as a binary package... an OUT-OF-DATE binary package built with the buggy libraries. Second, the install failed. The reason appears to be a conflict between ports and packages. As mentioned above, /stand/sysinstall tried to install KDE as a binary package. (Not a bad idea at all in and of itself, but bringing with it the aforementioned security risks.) Worse still, when the package system tried to install some other packages as dependencies for KDE, it hit a few libraries which had been built as ports when I installed cvsup. The installation stopped with an error. In short, we really have a tangled mess here. Under the current way of doing things, you can't remain updated and secure without using ports -- which is bad because of the time, effort, and disk demands inherent in rebuilding them. What's more, if you do use ports, it messes up your ability to use packages -- even out of /stand/sysinstall -- and leaves junk behind on your disk. Again, what a mess. The only way to avoid it, again, is to make binary packages "first class citizens." And also to resolve the conflicts between them and the use of ports. It's amazing that after installing exactly one port, I couldn't install a package from /stand/sysinstall. --Brett From owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Aug 31 14:40:37 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BA30416A4BF for ; Sun, 31 Aug 2003 14:40:37 -0700 (PDT) Received: from aurora.zrcalo.si (aurora.zrcalo.si [213.161.20.103]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 66B9144003 for ; Sun, 31 Aug 2003 14:40:36 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from mike@voyager.unix-systems.net) Received: from localhost (localhost.zrcalo.si [127.0.0.1]) by aurora.zrcalo.si (Postfix) with ESMTP id CA7AF22E40; Sun, 31 Aug 2003 23:41:21 +0200 (CEST) Received: from voyager.zrcalo.si (voyager.zrcalo.si [213.161.20.104]) by aurora.zrcalo.si (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2A54B22E3E; Sun, 31 Aug 2003 23:41:21 +0200 (CEST) Received: by voyager.zrcalo.si (Postfix, from userid 1001) id 6DD4F51602; Sun, 31 Aug 2003 23:43:54 +0200 (CEST) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by voyager.zrcalo.si (Postfix) with ESMTP id 52D14A6A01; Sun, 31 Aug 2003 23:43:54 +0200 (CEST) Date: Sun, 31 Aug 2003 23:43:54 +0200 (CEST) From: Miha Nedok X-X-Sender: mike@voyager.zrcalo.si To: T Kellers In-Reply-To: <200308310118.21642.kellers@njit.edu> Message-ID: <20030831234311.T90615@voyager.zrcalo.si> References: <200308310040.18658.kellers@njit.edu> <20030831015044.T13231@ganymede.hub.org> <200308310118.21642.kellers@njit.edu> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII X-Virus-Scanned: by AMaViS perl-11 - mx-master.zrcalo.si cc: stable@freebsd.org Subject: Re: spontaneous reboot X-BeenThere: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Production branch of FreeBSD source code List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 31 Aug 2003 21:40:37 -0000 I'm running two production machines since yesterday, NO PROBLEMS ! -Mike On Sun, 31 Aug 2003, T Kellers wrote: > Date: Sun, 31 Aug 2003 01:18:21 -0400 > From: T Kellers > To: Marc G. Many gcc options generate warnings with legal C source and this is= =20 permitted by the C standard (whether or not it is controlled by a compile= r=20 option) provided it does not prevent generation of correct code. The warning is true: that is _POSIX_C_SOURCE is not defined (and is evalu= ated in an #if preprocessor statement). The warning only appears when -Wundef option is used which relates=20 specifically to this circumstance. GCC people surely cannot be criticised= =20 for an option that works precisely as documented. No-one individually has it wrong. The problem is one of incompatibility between the header files and the=20 compiler options selected. Since the compiler options are probably set fo= r a=20 range of environments it is probably best to adapt the system header file= s to=20 circumvent the difficulty. The fix is to create a task queue that runs in a thread context and use that to create the sysctl variables needed by cd(4) and da(4). The eventual fix will be to move the CAM transport layer probe code into a kernel thread. Anyway, these patches work for me, but if I could get some feedback from people running with INVARIANTS turned on in -stable, I'd appreciate it. If it seems to work for people, I'll talk to re@ about getting this in before 4.9 goes out the door.
