This is interesting and useful information. I always wondered by the manuals state an operational temperature range of about 105 degrees Fahrenheit. 45C = 113F Of course, it wouldn't be that simple of a solution. :( The room is air conditioned to a much lower temperature. About 73F to 78F, most of the time. (About 25C.) It is supported by the afd(4) driver and I have been able to read both the 120M format disks and regular 1.4M floppies. The only thing I kind of think didn't work right was using fdformat to low-level format floppies (this is not necessary for LS-120 disks as the tracks are optically etched on them at the factory). But it has been quite a while and my memory is a little fuzzy in that area. The drive is still detected by 4.9, but I haven't actually used it since upgrading to that. Unfortunately the drivers are rather hard to come by these days. About 73F to > 78F, most of the time. (About 25C.) If I understand what Martin Hellwig wrote, he's talking about capacitors. I have had two computers out of a sampling of about 6 go bad on me in the last year. One went bad because capacitors on its motherboard failed, the other went bad because a capacitor in its power supply went bad. It turns out that this is more than just bad luck. I just googled for capacitor failure, and got the following article which explains what I'm talking about. http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=195 Sounds too much "spy vs. spy" to be true, but there is a definite problem with many capacitors manufactured during the last couple years or so. Usually if capacitors are starting to go bad, you'll see intermittent behavior. Then eventually you get full blown (pun intended) failure. If the capacitor is poorly designed, it will slime the area around it on the motherboard and the problem will be obvious. A better-designed capacitor will vent through the top, and all you will see is that the top has popped up a little, with maybe some brown goo on the top of the capacitor. If you have a temperature probe, you could test all the capacitors on your motherboard for temperature. Capacitors should not get hot in normal operation. One that is a fair bit hotter than the rest is definitely starting to experience an identity crisis (it is acting like a poorly-designed power resistor instead of a capacitor) even if it hasn't vented yet. I don't recommend touching them with your fingers because if one is going bad it will burn your finger. This is the voice of experience talking. :-) The article I mentioned above has good pictures illustrating what capacitors are and what they look like when they are bad. The frustrating thing is that there are a lot of them on a motherboard, and usually you don't just get one bad one. The motherboard I had that went bad had something like ten bad capacitors. -- Fred Gilham gilham@csl.sri.com A gold coin standard transfers monetary policy-making from central bankers and government officials to the common man, who can walk into a bank and demand payment for paper or digital currency in gold coins. All it appears to need is the relevant device's ids and identification strings. The patch was obtained from a checked out source tree: cd ${FBSDSRC}/src/sys/dev/sound/pci cvs diff -r 1.42 -r 1.48 es137x.c The relevant revisions were picked out with 'cvs log es1371.c'. BTW, if you don't have anonymous CVS you can do this all through the cvsweb interface: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/src/sys/dev/sound/pci/es137x.c The patch needed minor edits to remove a couple -HEAD vs -STABLE deltas. I'd expect it to apply cleanly to 4.8R, 4.9R, and -STABLE today. If you have any problems, drop me a note. I've read a little on netgraph and it seems like i maybe able to use that but i'm not sure how to go about that. Basicly the end result is to have snort listen on a virtual interface, which will have data sent to it from say fxp0 and fxp1. I also want to make sure that data from fxp0, fxp1 or $VIRTUAL doesn't get sent out fxp1 or fxp0 for some reason. Sometimes in the early days of FreeBSD 5.1 I stopped accidentially a 'make world' and since then I can not recompile a 'world' without this error message. The Only way to stop this and recompile a world is to disable building shared docs by commenting out #NO_SHAREDOCS= true # do not build the 4.4BSD legacy docs in /etc/make.conf. I searched google for this problem and I was told to rebuild groff and other stuff, but that was for the old 4.X days. There is also a solution mentioned setting environment variables (I forgot which ones). Can someone help, please? I would like to build the man pages and do an 'make world' with shared docs enabled. The "ps" results point at vinum. I've never seen this before and don't recall anything like this being mentioned here before. At the time, I had two find's running in a large NFS mounted filesystem and was doing a "cvs -d /usr/ncvs -R checkout -P ports" from a normal SCSI disk (/usr/ncvs) into a 12-way RAID-5 filesystem ($PWD == /mnt). After a while (10-15 minutes), I noticed that the messages from cvs had stopped, though a top and systat were still running and the top output indicated that both find's were still running. Apart from the 'cvs', the system seemed to be running normally but trying "sync" in another terminal also wedged, though "df" worked as did "ls" of a different subdirectory in /mnt. ddb/ps showed that "cvs", "sync", "bufdaemon" and "syncer" were all blocked on "vrlock" with the same wchan (c1482800). The system sources are also under /mnt and when I went to src/sys and started a search for "vrlock", the system recovered - the sync returned and cvs started running again. Having looked at the sources, the whcan points to a struct rangelock - but gdb reports that that particular rangelock is now being recycled continuously so I'm not sure of the actual I/O operation that caused the problem. Whilst bufdaemon is often waiting in vrlock, once I stop doing disk I/O, the dirtybuf count will go to zero and bufdaemon will go to psleep instead. No messages were reported on either the console or via syslog. Without PAE you can't use more than 4G on i386. You either have to use PAE or limit memory to 4G. This is strictly a hardware limitation there no other option left. The best that can be done would be autolimiting available memory instead of panicing later. I don't know how difficult this would be to implement. Telling in which way it panics if you try to do something that your hardware can't do is just wasted time. If PAE isn't compatible with asr(4) then maybe it's not busdma'ed or buggy. With PAE you have to use busdma aware drivers. That's a software thing and can be fixed. -- B.Walter BWCT http://www.bwct.de ticso@bwct.de info@bwct.de From owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Dec 17 16:58:14 2003 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7410516A4CE; Wed, 17 Dec 2003 16:58:14 -0800 (PST) Received: from carver.gumbysoft.com (carver.gumbysoft.com [66.220.23.50]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1A5E943D3F; Wed, 17 Dec 2003 16:58:09 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from dwhite@gumbysoft.com) Received: by carver.gumbysoft.com (Postfix, from userid 1000) id 0F14372DB5; Wed, 17 Dec 2003 16:58:09 -0800 (PST) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by carver.gumbysoft.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0A08572DAD; Wed, 17 Dec 2003 16:58:09 -0800 (PST) Date: Wed, 17 Dec 2003 16:58:09 -0800 (PST) From: Doug White To: =?gb2312?B?WGluIExJL8Du9s4=?= In-Reply-To: <20031218004038.B3EE45302@ftp.bjpu.edu.cn> Message-ID: <20031217165012.K15803@carver.gumbysoft.com> References: <20031218004038.B3EE45302@ftp.bjpu.edu.cn> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=gb2312 Content-Transfer-Encoding: QUOTED-PRINTABLE cc: stable@FreeBSD.org cc: current@freebsd.org Subject: Re: [Backtrace] 4.9 and 5.1-RELEASE occasionly panic on RAM > 4GB without PAE (long) X-BeenThere: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Production branch of FreeBSD source code List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 18 Dec 2003 00:58:14 -0000 On Thu, 18 Dec 2003, [gb2312] Xin LI/=C0=EE=F6=CE wrote: > One of my friend is operating servers on a big ICP in China. Its probably due to poor tuning in this case. See the tuning(7) man page and innumerable mailing lists posts. Basically, you want to turn down maxusers (128 or so works best) and maybe change the kernel/user boundary and kmem sizes. vmstat -m is useful to keep track of kernel memory use. Also forkbombs (which is what your program is, effectively) are best controlled by using user resource limits. They're there for a reason. Oh... I am aware of this issue, however, only machines have RAM > 4GB = expose the problem. So I suspect that something has triggered the problem in = 4GB w/o PAE case. Because the system will not even boot into single user = mode under a PAE configuration, I was unable to provide any useful = information about the PAE case. I guess that there is some race condition inside the vm or pmap code. However, after a preliminary research on these code I did not found = problem. > Its probably due to poor tuning in this case. When we have removed some RAM, in other words, install 2GB memory on the box, the panic's goes away. Please note that the problem is not due to defective RAM chips as we have tested all possible combinations and the problem persists. >=20 > Also forkbombs (which is what your program is, effectively)=20 > are best controlled by using user resource limits. They're=20 > there for a reason. See the login.conf(5) man page. Oh... I think this is important, however, I got no reason why a server running ordinary service will cause panic when heavy load. Implementing a forkbomb is a Bad Idea(tm), but I will still argue that = our daily run and crashdumps shows that this panic is mostly fork-and-malloc related, so we have the test program, and it triggered similar panic as = we have. Because that our panic could not be easily to reproduce, and the = two panic's were so similiar, I think they might be the same problem. In addition, IMHO, a userland program should never cause a kernel-panic = if the kernel is implemented very well without any flaw. As I mentioned in = last letter, on a configuration having 2GB of RAM, the system seemed to be rock-solid. That's why I have the ugly proof code... > > panic: pmap_new_proc: u_map allocation failed >=20 > kmem exhaustion condition in -stable. Er... Is this problem only -STABLE related? Thanks!
