Sorry for the delay, but I got my first draft of this done now.  It
divides events in upcoming events and past events.  I also added support
for additionel links for an event to link to photographs, Wiki and so
on.  More advanced calendar style output can perhaps be added later -
the XML file should make it possible to do it, since the start/end date
is simple to parse.

I have attached a more or less dummy XML file with some events, and the
xsl style that converts them to an HTML file.

HTML output, DTD, and Makefile can be found at
http://people.freebsd.org/~simon/work/events/ .

There are some parts that needs more work, e.g. the xsl could probably
be done better, the infolink tag should be renamed, and probably many
more things :-).

Comments, ideas, etc. very welcome.

i just had a quick look before going to bed. yes, i like it, very nice.
but i am not sure whether it really makes sense to have a distinction between
future and past events. if we do have such a distinction, then there
should be an anchor to get "quick" access, so there is no need to scroll
through the page when you want to find the upcoming event.
this needs regular updating just for having the past and
future events distinction up to date and without the anchors it is just
a lot of work without real benefit.

i found a typo, shouldn't the first line be like that:
If you know of any FreeBSD related events - or events that are of
interest for FreeBSD users which are not listed here
											^^^

The main reason I did it was to be able to show the next upcomming event
at the top of the page, so it is easy to get an overview of what is
happening in the near future.

That might be an idea, I will look into that - the headlines 'Upcoming
events:' and 'Past events:' already have id tags so it is possible to
link to them.

Well, since the upcomming event is at the top there is no need to scroll
for that; do you mean the past events?

Actually all the work is done now - the xsl stylesheet splits the events
itself based on the current date (as set in the Makefile generated
curdate.xml).

Hmm, which part to you mean?  Looks like the line your lines were
wrapped, so I'm not sure which part you are refering to.

I like the distinction between past and future events.  This gives us
the opportunity to add links to reports about FreeBSD activity on the
particular events later on.

under the section 'Secure Programming Guidelines', in the second sentence,
theres a part that makes sense but also doesn't quite:

"Never trust any source of input, i.e. command line arguments, environment
variables, configuration files, incoming TCP/UDP/ICMP packets, hostname
lookups, function arguments, etc. If the length of or contents of
the -->date<-- received is at all subject to outside control, then the
program or function should watch for this when copying it around. Specific
security issues to watch for in this are:"

Do you think it means data?

I'm learning programming at the moment and I suppose if the 'date' was
coming from outside then it makes sense, but in the context of the paragraph
I think it means more than just date data (if it means date data at all!).

Sorry to bother you if I'm wrong and/or this is the wrong address.

Dear FreeBSD World Wide Web Administrator, 

I have submitted a patch to the FreeBSD ports tree, 
http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/ports/mail/courier-imap/Makefile?rev=1.34&content-type=text/x-cvsweb-markup
but at the same time, started to receive large amounts of spam mail, 
which I think is due to the mailto: link set to my mail address.

Is it possible to remove the mailto: tag from my mail address?

It looks like there wasn't created a disc1 for alpha for 4.8.  You can
use 4.8-RELEASE-alpha-miniinst.iso to install, and then just download
packages from a ftp site, or you can just use the ports system to
install the needed programs.

Btw. the questions or alpha mailing lists might be able to help you
more, this mailing list is just for the website.

Hi, 

We as EnderUNIX.ORG have started to translate FreeBSD Documents in to 
Turkish language.  We have translated some documents in both www and doc. I 
have successfully compiled and installed www pages and there seems to be no 
mistake.  But as of know I can not compile doc tree because another document 
isn't compiling but the part that we have translated should compile without 
any problem. Before submitting changes with send-pr I think it is a good 
idea to inform both -doc and -www mailing list thus list members can try 
that patches. I am sending the link of patches since adding them here is 
inconvenient for all of us.

I just noticed that the legal link on /index.html on the German version
of the FreeBSD website is broken.

Are there any plans to translate that part of the website, or should the
link just be changed to the English version?

As far as I know there is no simple way to do this at the moment.  That
said, I also think in general that "the damage is done" since the email
address is out there in many email achieves on the web.

I don't think it makes much difference for the spammer harverster
programs, if there is a mailto: or not when the email address is there
(of coure I don't know for sure, but I doubt it).

In the long run I think you would be much better of installing a spam
filter (like SpamAssasin).  I catches more than 99% of the spam I get.

There are many people who can not endure receiving many spams
(ex. dialup ppp, slow connection, ...).  If we do nothing on
this problem,  some people may think that "If I submit PR,
I will receive many many spam.  So I will not submit PR."
It's not good.

I propose to do followings:

    o  delete "mailto:" tag
    o  use "username at foo.org" instead of "username@foo.org"

Any comments?

I feeded the email address of Tadashi Yanagihara into Google and got 2 hits:
	1. Freshports	not an official FreeBSD.org site, but Dan could=20
	probably implement some mailaddress crippling if he wants.
	2. His universities homepage publishes his Emailaddress without mailto

Feeding it into Google Groups I got 4 hits:
	1. Newsgroups mirroring cvs-all and cvs-ports.=20
	To pipe followup discussions to the PR orginator would require
	generic emailadresses like PR-no@gnats.freebsd.org. Bugzilla has
	this feature. But i am not sure if GNATS supports this feature.

	2.  Newsgroups mirroring freebsd-bugs and freebsd-ports.
	One possible Implementation would be to replace all reporters addresses
	with freebsd-gnats-submit@ but this isn't 100% safe as the email
	addresses could be in CC too:=20

I would like to point out, that send-pr already contains a warning:

SEND-PR: BE ADVISED THAT FREEBSD PROBLEM REPORTS ARE PUBLIC INFORMATION AND
SEND-PR: WILL BE PUBLISHED AS-IS ON THE PROJECT'S MAILING LISTS AND WEB SIT=
ES.
SEND-PR: DO NOT SUBMIT ANY INFORMATION YOU DO NOT WANT MADE PUBLIC.

Perhaps we can add to this warning, that PUBLIC INFORMATION includes the Fr=
om:=20
Emailaddress.

I don't know how much it will really help, but as long as the addresses
aren't made more obscure than the example you show above (where they are
still easy to read for humans), it's fine with me.

The new mailman archives uses an obscuration like the one you propose,
but the old mailing list interface doesn't, though it doesn't have a
mailto link either.

So the old mailing list archives, cvsweb, and GNATS web interface needs
to be looked at if someone whishes to make these changes...

Hi, 

We as EnderUNIX.ORG have started to translate FreeBSD Documents in to 
Turkish language.  We have translated some documents in both www and doc. I 
have successfully compiled and installed www pages and there seems to be no 
mistake.  But as of know I can not compile doc tree because another document 
isn't compiling but the part that we have translated should compile without 
any problem. Before submitting changes with send-pr I think it is a good 
idea to inform both -doc and -www mailing list thus list members can try 
that patches. I am sending the link of patches since adding them here is 
inconvenient for all of us.
