I had no problems upgrading to firmware version 2.70 on my Alpha. I got the latest downloads from: http://ftp.digital.com/pub/DEC/Alpha/firmware/readmes/v6.6/utility/ Note these files are only good for Alpha servers before the 8x00 series, and do NOT USE THEM on jensen systems. I found a very helpful doco at: http://aa11.cjb.net/tru64_unix_managers/2000/06/0010.html The above doco was adapted by me a bit, as I just typed ARC at the SRM console to jump to ARC. After that all the tools worked fine. The flashing worked great (after I re-read the instructions and saw the bit about renaming the file name) and the config worked fine. I saw some unusual behaviour when initialising a RAID 1 disk, where it seemed to hang. I hit escape and then said no to quit and it continued on fine. Weird. After that I whacked a Tru64 5.1 CD in the drive and booted fine and installed the OS. I now have a happy machine. Oh, why Tru64, you ask? Well, last time I installed FreeBSD time was an issue... That is all seemed fine, but the clock ran twice as fast. I hunted for a solution and then found that the Kernel code needed patching for a 2100, and never could get the kernel to compile after I hacked in the patch. Don't know if 5.2.1 has the same issue. Anyone know? I have a XP1000 with 4.9 release ( with 5.x I had lots a problems with ccc). I tryed these options: ccc -fast -O3 -arch ev67 -ifo and I gaing slightly better results than using ccc with no options actually after many tries it looks like "-fast" is the one option which counts something, all the others (-O3 -arch or -tune) looks like useless when used with -fast if I don't use -fast also I have to compile the ieee_fp_control.c and errno_location.c together with my code otherwise ther eare unresolved externals. anyone has some feedback about how to gain the best performances out of ccc ? Anyway I want to mention that with a progam doing lots of integer calculations and iterations with arctan function on my XP1000 using ccc I get better results that on a Pentium IV 3GHz using gcc with i686 optimization switches. ev6 is a great CPU. First off, I have some fixes to allow ptrace() to be marked MP safe again w/o generating a lock order reversal. This patch is at http://www.FreeBSD.org/~jhb/patches/alpha.ptrace.patch Note that you will have to do a 'make init_sysent.c' in sys/kern after patching to get the updated ptrace flag before building a new kernel. Second patch is to enable ithread preemption on Alpha which should reduce interrupt latency and provide a noticeable performance improvement (it did on i386 when we turned it on). The last time I was playing with having this on, I would get lockups under load on my SMP test system (a DS20). I think the reason it locked up was due to migration resulting in the thread that was interrupted by an interrupt returning back to PAL on a different CPU and that this violated some assumption made by PAL. To work around this, I use the new sched_pin() API to pin the interrupted thread around ithread preemption in this patch. So, this patch needs to be tested on both UP and SMP under load (-j 256 world build loops, etc.). I'm also curious if it does help performance at all, or at least the interactive "feel". Thanks for testing these. I'm by no standard a gdb specialist but I played with it with a WITNESS equipped kernel and it did not complain about LOR. On a UP DS10 btw. I posted the bug-report for the alpha 2100 machine check and Drew Gallatin gave me a patch to try. Unfortunaltly the 2100a machine I have, is running VMS for a project I'm currently working on. I had the machine down for a few days while I replaced some disks, but I had to put the machine back up before I could try the patches. I should have the project complete sometime this month and I'll have time to try the patches. In fact I'm getting another 2100 with 3 cpus and about 512MB of memory next week and I may be able to try the patches out on that machine. I'm not sure if the machine checks were endemic to just the 2100a or encompassed the whole 2100 family. Freebsd 4.6 in a uniprocessor mode ran pretty good as I recall. If you have the time and inclination and a 2100 you can try Drew's patches. Cheers, Tom Ponsford -- --- Please do not read this sig. If you have read this far, please unread back to the beginning. If you can give me Drew's patches and a howto use them I will give them a go. Please note that I am no coder, but I do at least understand how C and makefiles are laid out. Any suggestions where I can either get a SIMM board or 512MB card from, cheap? My 2100 on has 128MB of RAM. As a side note, 4.9 works fine, even with SMP. It even has the double speed clock issue resolved on the ISO! Yay! Chris Martin
