I'm really glad someone has picked up on this. No one wants to see Vinum users left behind, it's simply been a question of finding someone to bring Vinum forward :-). (And once I remembered I had to use MailMan to subscribe to freebsd-geom and not Majordomo, I was much happier :-). I just trawled my todo list and found the following GEOM items in no particular order: gbde(8) improvements geom_stripe geom_mirror vinum various KASSERTS geom_fox raidframe manpages insert/remove X11 tool fd(4) -> geom ufs -> geom "still-probing" handling of dynamic devices add dedicated label to vol_ffs so it could work for other than ufs. add CD labels to vol_ffs. inconsistent gbde lockfile numbering gbde -> opencrypto/HW-crypto md(4) -> OAM md(4) error injection. Some of these are easy, some of them almost done already and some of them requires me to sit down and explain what I mean. I guess there is also a couple of commitbits we need to pin on Pawel and Lukas in due time. My preference right now would be to get the manpages done and committed since that will help us all down the road. -- Poul-Henning Kamp | UNIX since Zilog Zeus 3.20 phk@FreeBSD.ORG | TCP/IP since RFC 956 FreeBSD committer | BSD since 4.3-tahoe Never attribute to malice what can adequately be explained by incompetence. Sounds good to me! > The source for the GEOM FAQ is avaible as standard DocBook SGML in the > directory http://people.freebsd.org/~simon/geomfaq/ . Suggestion for question 1.1 -- add the following after the first sentence: Translations provided by current GEOM classes include disk layout and partitioning schemes, such as FDISK slices, GPT slices, and BSD partitions. Also, GEOM includes a number of more complex classes implementing servies such as UFS volume labeling, disk mirroring, and RAID. GEOM provides abstractions making it easy to implement new disk layouts, as well as providing important infrastructure for implementing more complex storage services, such as RAID and logical volume management. These include standard mechanisms for auto-discovery, I/O request flow management, composition, and management services. I've taken a look at this, and it's really impressive. On the other hand, you've effectively discarded the original Vinum code and replaced it with something a lot more simple. I'm not sure that this is the most appropriate way to proceed. In particular, the code which maps incoming requests to outgoing requests reads: /* * XXX: This needs a _lot_ of work. * * Basically, we have to cope with three kinds of plexes: concat, striped, * and raid5. * Then, we have to cope with requests that overlap two or more subdisks. */ static void g_vinum_plex_start(struct bio *bp) { This is a great understatement. This code is some of the most complex I have ever written. I'm not saying that you can't do better, but it seems a waste of time to reinvent the wheel. Take a look at vinumraid5.c and vinumrequest.c for an example of how complicated it can be. The other thing that strikes me is that you've greatly simplified the object structures (originally in vinumobj.h, now in g_vinum_var.h). While a lot of things go away as the result of GEOM, others don't, like the I/O stats and revive parameters for example. It's possible that you're planning to put them back in, but this seems like a lot more work than necessary. Also, I'm not sure that changing tables to lists is the best way to go: each request will have to go down multiple levels of list to find the appropriate object. I'm prepared to be proven wrong on this one, however: certainly enlarging tables has been one of the biggest problems in the current Vinum implementation. In any case, I have some time for about a week now. We should probably discuss offline how to proceed. For example, there's now no handling of crashed, stopped, or faulty objects. I thought I should try to get the code running when all objects are responding and then add the necessary bits for fail safety later. That might not be the most clever way to do it, but as I said in my first mail, I wanted a proof-of-concept, and yet, it works. > The other thing that strikes me is that you've greatly simplified the > object structures (originally in vinumobj.h, now in g_vinum_var.h). > While a lot of things go away as the result of GEOM, others don't, > like the I/O stats and revive parameters for example. Yes, I've left out a lot that I currently didn't need, as to not confuse myself while working on it. I'm sure that many of that stuff is going to go back in. > Also, I'm not sure that changing tables to lists is the best way to > go: each request will have to go down multiple levels of list to find > the appropriate object. I have no real preference for lists over tables or something else. It just happens that the list code is already very present in GEOM, so I thought I could take it. If tables do better, I've nothing against it.
