Care to share your experience ? I have over 10k user accounts from /etc/passwd (system users, without shells) and over 4k users from MySQL. I run tpop3d-1.5.3 (actually I've been running it since those early days of 1.3.x) and I must say I am very happy with it. Before that, I did run other pop3 daemons but they lacked the flexibility I wanted. This is an ISP enviroment, using Maildir for both system accounts and DB based users. The information is below if anyone is interested. I'm still very happy with my service at snsonline.net, but I see this as a possible fun little side project: The net-co-op mailing list (coop at net-co-op.org) is now up. To subscribe: Email coop-subscribe at net-co-op.org or go to http://www.net-co-op.org/mailman/listinfo/coop Suggested topics for the new coop (koop?) list: 1) Physical co-location co-ops like http://www.communitycolo.net/ or http://wampumpeag.net/vixie-personal-1U-colo.html - do you have a server co-located in one? Would you like to? Are you interested in starting something similar in your own city? 2) Virtual co-ops: We don't need no stinkin' brick and mortar. What can we do with a distributed group of personal servers? Basic things like secondary DNS and MX come to mind, but I think we can also look at more advanced possibilities. Would we want to make a standardized net-co-op looking glass script that volunteers would run? Could we monitor each others servers? If we get enough servers on diverse networks, could this health monitoring be extended to be a poor mans Internet monitoring system? Would we mirror each others personal websites? How about DNS round robins to load balance mirrored content? Would we want to host sites for charities? Etc. 3) Personal Server Co-location. See http://www.vix.com/personalcolo/ 4) Community building: Part of establishing all this will require us to get to know each other, so basic chat is encouraged. If the chatting becomes too much for one list, I'll create a second list and coop will remain the operational list. Please post an introduction when you subscribe. List archives can be viewed at http://www.net-co-op.org/pipermail/coop/ From owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Mar 24 03:42:57 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BF71116A4CF for ; Wed, 24 Mar 2004 03:42:57 -0800 (PST) Received: from utrhcs.cs.utwente.nl (utrhcs.cs.utwente.nl [130.89.10.247]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4133343D54 for ; Wed, 24 Mar 2004 03:42:57 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from tcm-users-approval@cs.utwente.nl) Received: from utrhcs.cs.utwente.nl (utrhcs.cs.utwente.nl [130.89.10.247]) by utrhcs.cs.utwente.nl (8.12.10/8.12.9) with ESMTP id i2OBgsCi017126 for ; Wed, 24 Mar 2004 12:42:54 +0100 (MET) Received: (from daemon@localhost) by utrhcs.cs.utwente.nl (8.12.10/8.12.9/Submit) id i2OBgs7A017125; Wed, 24 Mar 2004 12:42:54 +0100 (MET) Date: Wed, 24 Mar 2004 12:42:54 +0100 (MET) Message-Id: <200403241142.i2OBgs7A017125@utrhcs.cs.utwente.nl> To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org From: tcm-users-request@cs.utwente.nl In-Reply-To: <200403241142.i2OBgpNF010539@ares.cs.utwente.nl>, from freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Subject: Your mail to tcm-users-request@listserv.cs.utwente.nl X-BeenThere: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list Reply-To: tcm-users-approval@cs.utwente.nl List-Id: Internet Services Providers List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 24 Mar 2004 11:42:57 -0000 This pre-recorded message is being sent in response to your recent email to tcm-users-request@listserv.cs.utwente.nl. Very small, very lightweight, and you get to write your own password authentication if you want. For an MTA however, I don't use qmail, I use postfix (but with maildir). Although, this thread has convinced me to try out tpop3d...I'll definitely give it a look. This is probably the best way to leave things. You can log in as a user then su to root, use sudo or whatever. If you do want to modify this, edit /etc/ssh/sshd_config and alter the line: #PermitRootLogin no to read: PermitRootLogin yes then restart sshd PWR. What you want to enable is: PermitRootLogin yes in /etc/ssh/sshd_config But is it difficult for you to log in there as normal user and then switch by su to root? su is checking in, who is in group wheel, and if you are in wheel group, then you are allowed to su to root, else you are blocked to su to root. You wouldn't have to go to server room, if you would create also another ordinary user account to which you will be loggin in when using ssh. cheers, Martin On Fri, Mar 26, 2004 at 12:43:26AM -0800, Hamed Abangar (h_abangar@yahoo.co= m) wrote: > Dear members > =20 > I'm new to this list and also I'm new to FreeBSD environment .I'm networ= k administrator=20 > in an isp.Recently i have changed our Internet servers from Linux to free= bsd ( cache=20 > servers , dns servers , firewall , mail servers) . OS is FreeBSD 5.2.1. I am recompiling php with gettext support. Support for OpenSSL is also desired and it's what is giving me grief. The problem is only on one box amongst the many that I have. While compiling, the script fails with this mesg: Configuring extensions checking for OpenSSL support... yes checking for pkg-config... /usr/local/bin/pkg-config configure: error: Cannot find OpenSSL's ===> Script "configure" failed unexpectedly. OK, that file, evp.h is actually in /usr/include/openssl/evp.h So something is amiss, perhaps with my ENV ??? I have tried doing export CFLAGS="-I/usr/include" that still doesn't seem to help .. brain dead now ;) -Wash http://www.netmeister.org/news/learn2quote.html -- +======================================================================+ |\ _,,,---,,_ | Odhiambo Washington Zzz /,`.-'`' -. ;-;;,_ | Wananchi Online Ltd. www.wananchi.com |,4- ) )-,_. ,\ ( `'-'| Tel: +254 20 313985-9 +254 20 313922 '---''(_/--' `-'\_) | GSM: +254 722 743223 +254 733 744121 +======================================================================+ San Francisco, n.: Marcel Proust editing an issue of Penthouse. I get the following error in httpd-error.log: [Sat Mar 27 10:58:52 2004] [notice] caught SIGTERM, shutting down [Sat Mar 27 10:59:01 2004] [warn] make_sock: problem listening on port 80, \ filedescriptor (1074) larger than FD_SETSIZE (1024) found, you probably need \ to rebuild Apache with a larger FD_SETSIZE Now, if I modify /usr/include/sys/types.h to change 1024 to 2048 (This is madness, I am sure) and recompile apache, it runs fine. Can someone please help me out of this. My solution is not perfect, even in my mind, as I am sure it will break something on the system. My scripts to compile apache are here: http://ns2.wananchi.com/~wash/Apache/1.3.29/apache+ssl+php+modperl.sh Thanks in advance. -Wash http://www.netmeister.org/news/learn2quote.html -- +======================================================================+ |\ _,,,---,,_ | Odhiambo Washington Zzz /,`.-'`' -. ;-;;,_ | Wananchi Online Ltd. www.wananchi.com |,4- ) )-,_. ,\ ( `'-'| Tel: +254 20 313985-9 +254 20 313922 '---''(_/--' `-'\_) | GSM: +254 722 743223 +254 733 744121 +======================================================================+ Conceit causes more conversation than wit. -- LaRouchefoucauld From owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Mar 27 11:01:08 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E197016A4CE for ; Sat, 27 Mar 2004 11:01:08 -0800 (PST) Received: from seven.Alameda.net (seven.alameda.net [64.81.53.71]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CAE6343D2D for ; Sat, 27 Mar 2004 11:01:08 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from ulf@Alameda.net) Received: by seven.Alameda.net (Postfix, from userid 1000) id 9BB913A204; Sat, 27 Mar 2004 11:01:08 -0800 (PST) Date: Sat, 27 Mar 2004 11:01:08 -0800 From: Ulf Zimmermann To: Odhiambo Washington , freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Message-ID: <20040327190108.GH89845@seven.alameda.net> References: <20040327101611.GA32942@ns2.wananchi.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20040327101611.GA32942@ns2.wananchi.com> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.1i Organization: Alameda Networks, Inc.
