In many cases these ports are failing to compile on some subset of the FreeBSD build environments. The most common problem is that recent versions of -CURRENT include gcc3.3, which is much stricter about such things as function declarations, literal strings constants that continue over several physical lines, and forcing the deprecation of antique header files such as varargs.h (we should now be using stdargs.h). The next most common problem is that compiles succeed on the i386 architecture (e.g. the common Intel PC), but fail on one or more of the other architectures due to assumptions about things such as size of various types, byte-alignment issues, and so forth. In occasional cases we see that the same port may have different errors in different build environments. The script that runs on the build cluster uses heuristics to try to 'guess' the error type to help you isolate problems, but it is only a rough guide. If you need help in one or more build environments that you do not have access to, please ask for help on the freebsd-ports mailing list. One more note: on occasion, there are transient build errors seen on the build farm. Unfortunately, there is not yet any way for this algorithm to tell the difference (humans are much, much better at this kind of thing.) The build errors are listed below. In the case where the same problem exists on more than one build environment, the URL points to the latest errorlog for that type. (By 'build environment' here we mean 'combination of 4.x/5.x/6.x with target architecture'.) (Note: the dates are included to help you to gauge whether or not the build error still applies to the latest version. The program that generates this report is not yet able to determine this automatically.) portname: java/eclipse-langpack broken because: Requires update to 3.0 build errors: none. overview: http://portsmon.firepipe.net/portoverview.py?category=java&portname=eclipse-langpack If these build errors are ones that you are already aware of, please accept our apologies and ignore this message. On the other hand, if you no longer wish to maintain this port (or ports), please reply with a message stating that, and accept our thanks for your efforts in the past. Every effort has been made to make sure that these build errors really do correspond to a port that you maintain. However, due to the fact that this is an automated process, it may indeed generate false matches. Often, these ports are so marked due to security concerns, such as known exploits. An overview of the port, including errors seen on the build farm, is included below. portname: java/linux-blackdown-jdk13 forbidden because: Vulnerabilities in the browser plugin build errors: none. overview: http://portsmon.firepipe.net/portoverview.py?category=java&portname=linux-blackdown-jdk13 portname: java/linux-ibm-jdk13 forbidden because: Vulnerabilities in the browser plugin build errors: none. overview: http://portsmon.firepipe.net/portoverview.py?category=java&portname=linux-ibm-jdk13 If this problem is one that you are already aware of, please accept our apologies and ignore this message. On the other hand, if you no longer wish to maintain this port (or ports), please reply with a message stating that, and accept our thanks for your efforts in the past. Its current use also encompasses applications as seen in both http://www.freebsd.org/ports/java.html and http://www.freshports.org/java/ Checking out the Porter's Handbook which should be the source of all knowledge (*giggles*, well, it lags behind but it should be :). The java category is listed as: "java Software related to the Java language." http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/porters-handbook/makefile-categories.html#AEN782 So, it comes to this. Are we saying that the current usage should be changed to java language related applications not including applications written in java? I do not think so but the ports system is adaptable and ever changing so it would be nice to visit this question. How does the java@ team feels about it? I for one think that we should keep the current statement, java as primary category for applications related primarily to the languange and secondary for anything written in java as we have for perl and python. The java PR category should be used for ports that have the java category as their main listing. What do you think about that? So my effort will now be geared towards going through the list of ports in the java category and see if they should have their main listing in the java category or that they should be listed in another category (which would result in moving them). I also advocate for the current scheme. I like the ability to list a port in multiple categories, with the main category representing the kind of application the port is about. This gives that if 'java' is the main and only category of a port, then this port is exclusively related to Java, namely JDKs, tools and documentations. If 'java' is part of the additional categories, then this port uses Java. As you pointed out, this policy is also used for 'perl' and 'python' categories. So I think this is more a general ports issue than just a Java specific one. I indeed do not see any reason why Java ports should not comply with rules that apply to other parts of the ports tree. Furthermore, I personally advocate against a specific treatment for Java ports. Currently, IMHO, many ports are located in the java subdirectory of the ports tree (often with 'java' as their main and only category) when they would better be in a more representative subdirectory. For example, java/jdom (that I maintain BTW), which is an XML API for Java, should (again IMHO) rather be textproc/jdom, like the many other Java ports for XML processing. I was once tempted to request a major set of repocopies to reflect this, but then I realized that only JDKs would stay in the 'java' subdirectory. But then, shouldn't JDKs reside in 'lang', as it is the case for any other language compilers and runtimes? There are probably many historical reasons for the current 'java' subdirectory in the ports tree. But I would rather like to see 'java' as a virtual category, used to "tag" any port that uses Java. Like you though, I would really like to hear from the FreeBSD Java community on this subject. I think you've failed to understand that we've been trying to move towards the following: anything in the FreeBSD ports collection gets filed under 'ports' in GNATS. (Among other things, this will allow the PRs to be tracked in portsmon, but that's besides the point). I've been trying to advocate use the of the 'java' category in GNATS to be 'things about the interaction of the Java Virtual Machine with the FreeBSD kernel'. In this, it would be a choice on a par with 'kern' or 'gnu'. The 'primary listing' (by which you mean ports category?) is irrelevant to GNATS -- all ports categories are 'ports'. > The java PR category should be used for ports that have the java category > as their main listing. What do you think about that? This would mean that to be consistent, we would have to add every other ports category to GNATS. This would be, at best, clumsy. I'd much rather see all the ports PRs in one place, and preferably with '/' in their Synopses, so that one could search for them in GNATS instead of portsmon being the only place where the association from PR number -> portname is made (which is the case today). For a while I tried to do that by editing Synopses but there are too many for one single person to keep up with. IMHO putting PRs about Java-based ports under 'java' would be a step backwards. mcl, with bugmeister hat on From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Dec 6 08:28:40 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 60FD516A4CE for ; Mon, 6 Dec 2004 08:28:40 +0000 (GMT) Received: from fly.ebs.gr (fly.ebs.gr [62.103.84.177]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 833D343D1D for ; Mon, 6 Dec 2004 08:28:38 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from past@ebs.gr) Received: from ebs.gr (root@hal.ebs.gr [10.1.1.2]) by fly.ebs.gr (8.12.9p1/8.12.9) with ESMTP id iB68SNLc000309; Mon, 6 Dec 2004 10:28:23 +0200 (EET) (envelope-from past@ebs.gr) Received: from [127.0.0.1] (past@hal.ebs.gr [10.1.1.2]) by ebs.gr (8.12.11/8.12.11) with ESMTP id iB68SI1q080341; Mon, 6 Dec 2004 10:28:20 +0200 (EET) (envelope-from past@ebs.gr) Message-ID: <41B4181E.10704@ebs.gr> Date: Mon, 06 Dec 2004 10:28:14 +0200 From: Panagiotis Astithas Organization: EBS Ltd. Well, I'm not terribly enthusiastic about mass repocopies, but in theory I'd rather see what you suggest - e.g. a java XML processor listed as 'textproc java', or as a second choice 'java textproc', which would avoid the need for the repocopy. But certainly it should not be just listed as 'java'. > I was once tempted to request a major set of repocopies to reflect this, > but then I realized that only JDKs would stay in the 'java' > subdirectory. But then, shouldn't JDKs reside in 'lang', as it is the > case for any other language compilers and runtimes? Philosophically: possibly yes. But I don't feel strongly enough about the matter to advocate for the ~135 repocopies all this would require :-) (nb: 68 of the 135 ports in java/ are already listed in multiple categories). mcl From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Dec 6 10:18:43 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AD14816A4CE; Mon, 6 Dec 2004 10:18:43 +0000 (GMT) Received: from seed.net.tw (sn13.seed.net.tw [139.175.54.13]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 236E143D54; Mon, 6 Dec 2004 10:18:43 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from leafy@leafy.idv.tw) Received: from [221.169.40.115] (port=58584 helo=chihiro.leafy.idv.tw) by seed.net.tw with esmtp (Seednet 4.23:1) id 1CbFx4-000Cia-1I; Mon, 06 Dec 2004 18:18:42 +0800 Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by chihiro.leafy.idv.tw (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5F866212; Mon, 6 Dec 2004 18:18:41 +0800 (CST) Received: from chihiro.leafy.idv.tw ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (chihiro.leafy.idv.tw [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id 20588-01; Mon, 6 Dec 2004 18:18:40 +0800 (CST) Received: by chihiro.leafy.idv.tw (Postfix, from userid 1000) id 3587A1CF; Mon, 6 Dec 2004 18:18:40 +0800 (CST) To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@freebsd.org From: leafy X-send-pr-version: 3.113 X-GNATS-Notify: Message-Id: <20041206101840.3587A1CF@chihiro.leafy.idv.tw> Date: Mon, 6 Dec 2004 18:18:40 +0800 (CST) X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new at leafy.idv.tw cc: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Subject: javavmwrapper messes up amavisd-new X-BeenThere: freebsd-java@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list Reply-To: leafy List-Id: Porting Java to FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 06 Dec 2004 10:18:43 -0000 >Submitter-Id: current-users >Originator: leafy >Organization: >Confidential: no >Synopsis: javavmwrapper messes up amavisd-new >Severity: serious >Priority: medium >Category: ports >Class: sw-bug >Release: FreeBSD 6.0-CURRENT i386 >Environment: System: FreeBSD chihiro.leafy.idv.tw 6.0-CURRENT FreeBSD 6.0-CURRENT #0: Mon Dec 6 11:48:17 CST 2004 leafy@chihiro.leafy.idv.tw:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/CHIHIRO i386 >Description: When javavmwrapper is installed, amavisd-new stops functions correctly with the following error message: Dec 6 18:13:28 chihiro amavis[19787]: (19787-01) NOTICE: Skipping bad output from file(1) at [0, p001], got: file: error: no suitable JavaVMs found >How-To-Repeat: 1. IMHO, this means that amavisd-new is using a JDK through the 'java' command. It was already doing this BTW, but now javavmwrapper installs a 'java' executable in a directory included in $PATH ($PREFIX/bin/). So I guess we should either disable this use of Java in the amavisd-new port or fix this support. Do you have any JAVA* variable defined? Please try unsetting all of them (JAVA_VERSION, JAVA_HOME, JAVAVM...). The error you reported should only be raised if some criteria is specified regarding the JVM and a suitable JVM cannot be found. When nothing is specified, any JVM would fit and thus javavmwrapper will raise no error. OTOH, maybe you just have javavmwrapper installed and no JDK, and thus there is a 'java' executable with no JDK to run on the other side (thus no suitable JVM, as there's no JVM at all). Maybe amavisd-new just sets JAVA_HOME prior to running 'java'. Could you try setting JAVA_HOME to your installed JDK home before running amavisd-new? If this doesn't work either, I will try to dig further into amavisd-new. Hum, in this extend, I just did the following: $ cd /usr/ports/security/amavisd-new $ make extract $ grep -ri java work work/amavisd-new-2.2.0/amavisd: [qr/^compiled Java class data\b/ => 'java'], I don't see where 'java' is invoked... but I'm not quite a perl programmer myself. Maybe that's just another application (that should be part of amavisd-new dependencies) that calls 'java'. I guess we should contact the maintainer of the port to be sure. I agree. So for now what I suggest is that we, as commiters, do not commit any new port in the java/ subdirectory when 'java' is not the only category. In fact, we could state that 'java' should be the main category if and only if it is the only category of a port. In the same time, we start to tag existing ports in java/ to enforce the above rule, by adding a relevant category (or several) to each port that would need it. Then, each time a repocopy is needed for a port in java/ (e.g. due to some project name change), then we consider if there would be a better place (that is a better subdirectory) for the port, according to its CATEGORIES. If this is the case, we take the opportunity to change its subdirectory. That's what I did with Log4J, moving it from java/jakarta-log4j to devel/log4j. No mass repocopy as we all agree that this would be overwhelming for such an issue, but rather we give directions to have a better organized ports tree in the long term. One commit at a time. Invoking make(1) is not cheap on some systems. I'm sorry for that, but AFAICT your best bet is to run javavmwrapper with a correct JDK specified in JAVA_HOME so that it doesn't invoke make(1). You'll lose the bsd.java.mk-like logic though. I am trying to install Java1.4 on FreeBSD 5.3. I am using ports. They are updated via RELENG_5_3 I recompiled my kernel, but left everything intact (I didn't comment out any devices). Not sure if this is needed, but my specs: AMD Athlon XP 1800 with 768 MB ram, GeForceFX5600 card, 80 gb WD drive (8mb cache), Asus A7333 mobo... Award BIOS - updated. I have loaded and mounted the linuxprocfs, and commented out the line causing issues. I get past all that. But sometime afterwards my compile errored with this message (and also a bit of compile code from what was happening before the error) : #################################################################### Copying /usr/ports/java/jdk14/work/control/build/bsd-i586/tmp/java/java.lang/library/newclasses... From memory, once a release has been out for 6 months, the previous release is given a 6 month window, and after that it disappears from the site. They actually delete all the downloads. So, in effect, there is only a 12 month window to upgrade to the current release, before you get into all sorts of hot water. So I'd not be surprised if 1.3 was already gone, and also 1.4.1 is probably close to expiry as well; with the clock ticking on 1.4.2 as well. I think this is commercially insane, myself. It means that commercial suppliers of packages cannot in general support the Java releases that they are delivering to customers in any packaged form, as by the time it is rolled out, it's out of the 12 month window. But as a trend, tight windows are gathering force; Microsoft are now doing it too by ditching support for anything pre XP, so I don't see Sun backing off any time. (I read about this 2 months back in looking for a security file, which had gone ... breaking a whole platform ... but I'm not 100% clear on it: correct me if I'm wrong, anyone.) iang From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Dec 10 02:34:54 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4B24E16A4CE for ; Fri, 10 Dec 2004 02:34:54 +0000 (GMT) Received: from obsecurity.dyndns.org (CPE0050040655c8-CM00111ae02aac.cpe.net.cable.rogers.com [69.194.102.143]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1276543D53 for ; Fri, 10 Dec 2004 02:34:54 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from kris@obsecurity.org) Received: by obsecurity.dyndns.org (Postfix, from userid 1000) id CCA1151C66; Thu, 9 Dec 2004 18:41:31 -0800 (PST) Date: Thu, 9 Dec 2004 18:41:31 -0800 From: Kris Kennaway To: Iang Message-ID: <20041210024131.GA70630@xor.obsecurity.org> References: <20041209223454.GA5460@xor.obsecurity.org> <20041209224004.GA5608@xor.obsecurity.org> <1789.82.70.142.134.1102645422.squirrel@82.70.142.134> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="fUYQa+Pmc3FrFX/N" Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <1789.82.70.142.134.1102645422.squirrel@82.70.142.134> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.2.1i cc: java@freebsd.org cc: Kris Kennaway Subject: Re: linux-sun-jdk12 unfetchable X-BeenThere: freebsd-java@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting Java to FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 10 Dec 2004 02:34:54 -0000 --fUYQa+Pmc3FrFX/N Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable On Thu, Dec 09, 2004 at 09:23:42PM -0500, Iang wrote: >=20 > >> http://java.sun.com/webapps/download/Display?BundleId=3D9153 > >> > >> no longer works. I don't think there are major problems regarding the jdk's with this update. It would be nice if someone could apply my patch (http://www.leidinger.net/FreeBSD/port-patches/linux.diff), update everything (UPDATING will contain instructions after applying the patch), test some java ports and report back how it works.
