The laptop is a Compaq Armada 1580DMT. It has a Pentium/P55C processor @ 150MHz, 16MB RAM, a 2 GB hard drive and a cd-rom. The LCD screen is 800x600, and it has a Cirrus Logic GD7548 graphics controller with 1 MB of VideoRAM. (I told you it was an old laptop.) So, how do I turn it into a picture frame? I installed FreeBSD 4.9-RELEASE on it, and then I have two options: a) install SVGAlib and seejpeg or zgv b) install XFree86 and use xloadimage or another program to show the pictures on the X root window Option a. I installed SVGAlib, and seejpeg. However, testing with vgatest shows that SVGAlib only detects the GD7548 as having 512k memory, and this limits my display options somewhat (I get 800x600 with 256 colors, so it's not too bad). Does anybody know how to make svaglib see the full 1MB of VideoRAM on this machine? Sadly, zgv is not ported to FreeBSD, and it doesn't look like an easy task to do so. Option b. I have XFree86 4.3.0 installed, my /etc/X11/XF86Config set up, and when I start XFree86 on its own, I get a screen and can move the mouse, and kill the X server (with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace). Everything working, right? Unfortunately, no. When I try to start XFree86 with just one client (ie. 'xterm -geometry +0-100' in my .xinitrc), the X screen freezes before the client comes up on the display. I can see the grey screen, but the mouse cursor is not moving. Using ps and top, I can see that the XFree86 process is running, the xterm process is idle. I can kill the XFree86 process, but then the text terminals (Alt-F1 etc.) are also dark. No error messages in any logs. I have to shutdown the machine in order to get the display working again. Hmm... just a minute. Ok, setting the NoAccel option in the XF86Config fixed that. The problem is that it takes a while to start up the X server. Do I need to trim my XFree86 setup in order to reduce memory usage? (see the attached XF86Config file) Finally, does anybody know of a nice script to do the picture slideshow? I will load pictures either from a CD, or from a network share (Samba). -- Torfinn Ingolfsen, Norway --Multipart_Sun__4_Jan_2004_19:30:51_+0100_081d2000 Content-Type: application/octet-stream; name="XF86Config.frame" Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="XF86Config.frame" Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64 U2VjdGlvbiAiU2VydmVyTGF5b3V0IgoJSWRlbnRpZmllciAgICAgIlhGcmVlODYgQ29uZmlndXJl ZCIKCVNjcmVlbiAgICAgIDAgICJTY3JlZW4wIiAwIDAKCUlucHV0RGV2aWNlICAgICJNb3VzZTAi ICJDb3JlUG9pbnRlciIKCUlucHV0RGV2aWNlICAgICJLZXlib2FyZDAiICJDb3JlS2V5Ym9hcmQi CkVuZFNlY3Rpb24KClNlY3Rpb24gIkZpbGVzIgoJUmdiUGF0aCAgICAgICIvdXNyL1gxMVI2L2xp Yi9YMTEvcmdiIgoJTW9kdWxlUGF0aCAgICIvdXNyL1gxMVI2L2xpYi9tb2R1bGVzIgoJRm9udFBh dGggICAgICIvdXNyL1gxMVI2L2xpYi9YMTEvZm9udHMvbWlzYy8iCglGb250UGF0aCAgICAgIi91 c3IvWDExUjYvbGliL1gxMS9mb250cy9TcGVlZG8vIgoJRm9udFBhdGggICAgICIvdXNyL1gxMVI2 L2xpYi9YMTEvZm9udHMvVHlwZTEvIgoJRm9udFBhdGggICAgICIvdXNyL1gxMVI2L2xpYi9YMTEv Zm9udHMvNzVkcGkvIgoJRm9udFBhdGggICAgICIvdXNyL1gxMVI2L2xpYi9YMTEvZm9udHMvMTAw ZHBpLyIKRW5kU2VjdGlvbgoKU2VjdGlvbiAiTW9kdWxlIgoJTG9hZCAgImRiZSIKCUxvYWQgICJk cmkiCglMb2FkICAiZXh0bW9kIgoJTG9hZCAgImdseCIKCUxvYWQgICJyZWNvcmQiCglMb2FkICAi eHRyYXAiCglMb2FkICAic3BlZWRvIgoJTG9hZCAgInR5cGUxIgpFbmRTZWN0aW9uCgpTZWN0aW9u ICJJbnB1dERldmljZSIKCUlkZW50aWZpZXIgICJLZXlib2FyZDAiCglEcml2ZXIgICAgICAia2V5 Ym9hcmQiCkVuZFNlY3Rpb24KClNlY3Rpb24gIklucHV0RGV2aWNlIgoJSWRlbnRpZmllciAgIk1v dXNlMCIKCURyaXZlciAgICAgICJtb3VzZSIKCU9wdGlvbgkgICAgIlByb3RvY29sIiAiYXV0byIK CU9wdGlvbgkgICAgIkRldmljZSIgIi9kZXYvc3lzbW91c2UiCkVuZFNlY3Rpb24KClNlY3Rpb24g Ik1vbml0b3IiCglJZGVudGlmaWVyICAgIk1vbml0b3IwIgoJVmVuZG9yTmFtZSAgICJDb21wYXEi CglNb2RlbE5hbWUgICAgIkFybWFkYSAxNTgwRE1UIExDRCIKCUhvcml6U3luYwkyOCAtIDQwCglW ZXJ0UmVmcmVzaAk0MyAtIDcyCkVuZFNlY3Rpb24KClNlY3Rpb24gIkRldmljZSIKICAgICAgICAj IyMgQXZhaWxhYmxlIERyaXZlciBvcHRpb25zIGFyZTotCiAgICAgICAgIyMjIFZhbHVlczogPGk+ OiBpbnRlZ2VyLCA8Zj46IGZsb2F0LCA8Ym9vbD46ICJUcnVlIi8iRmFsc2UiLAogICAgICAgICMj IyA8c3RyaW5nPjogIlN0cmluZyIsIDxmcmVxPjogIjxmPiBIei9rSHovTUh6IgogICAgICAgICMj IyBbYXJnXTogYXJnIG9wdGlvbmFsCiAgICAgICAgI09wdGlvbiAgICAgIkhXY3Vyc29yIiAgICAg ICAgICAgCSMgWzxib29sPl0KICAgICAgICBPcHRpb24gICAgICJOb0FjY2VsIiAgICAgICAgICAg IAkjIFs8Ym9vbD5dCiAgICAgICAgI09wdGlvbiAgICAgIk1NSU8iICAgICAgICAgICAgICAgCSMg Wzxib29sPl0KICAgICAgICAjT3B0aW9uICAgICAiU2hhZG93RkIiICAgICAgICAgICAJIyBbPGJv b2w+XQogICAgICAgICNPcHRpb24gICAgICJSb3RhdGUiICAgICAgICAgICAgIAkjIFs8c3RyPl0K ICAgICAgICAjT3B0aW9uICAgICAiTWVtQ0ZHMSIgICAgICAgICAgICAJIyA8aT4KICAgICAgICAj T3B0aW9uICAgICAiTWVtQ0ZHMiIgICAgICAgICAgICAJIyA8aT4KCUlkZW50aWZpZXIgICJDYXJk MCIKCURyaXZlciAgICAgICJjaXJydXMiCglWZW5kb3JOYW1lICAiQ2lycnVzIExvZ2ljIgoJQm9h cmROYW1lICAgIkdEIDc1NDgiCglCdXNJRCAgICAgICAiUENJOjA6MjowIgpFbmRTZWN0aW9uCgpT ZWN0aW9uICJTY3JlZW4iCglJZGVudGlmaWVyICJTY3JlZW4wIgoJRGV2aWNlICAgICAiQ2FyZDAi CglNb25pdG9yICAgICJNb25pdG9yMCIKCVN1YlNlY3Rpb24gIkRpc3BsYXkiCgkJRGVwdGggICAg IDEKCUVuZFN1YlNlY3Rpb24KCVN1YlNlY3Rpb24gIkRpc3BsYXkiCgkJRGVwdGggICAgIDQKCUVu ZFN1YlNlY3Rpb24KCVN1YlNlY3Rpb24gIkRpc3BsYXkiCgkJRGVwdGggICAgIDgKCQkjTW9kZXMJ IjgwMHg2MDAiCglFbmRTdWJTZWN0aW9uCglTdWJTZWN0aW9uICJEaXNwbGF5IgoJCURlcHRoICAg ICAxNQoJRW5kU3ViU2VjdGlvbgoJU3ViU2VjdGlvbiAiRGlzcGxheSIKCQlEZXB0aCAgICAgMTYK CUVuZFN1YlNlY3Rpb24KCVN1YlNlY3Rpb24gIkRpc3BsYXkiCgkJRGVwdGggICAgIDI0CgkJTW9k ZXMJIjgwMHg2MDAiCglFbmRTdWJTZWN0aW9uCkVuZFNlY3Rpb24KCg== --Multipart_Sun__4_Jan_2004_19:30:51_+0100_081d2000-- From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Jan 4 16:01:28 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EBE9716A4CE for ; Sun, 4 Jan 2004 16:01:28 -0800 (PST) Received: from gilmore.nas.nasa.gov (gilmore.nas.nasa.gov [129.99.33.42]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2E1E143D3F for ; Sun, 4 Jan 2004 16:01:27 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from tweten@nas.nasa.gov) Received: from gilmore.nas.nasa.gov (IDENT:G3noU52ABYn4Hc20Gn3tpOgxcPcPjTRG@localhost.nas.nasa.gov [127.0.0.1]) i0501Pa1002457; Sun, 4 Jan 2004 16:01:25 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from tweten@gilmore.nas.nasa.gov) X-Mailer: exmh version 2.6.3 04/04/2003 with nmh-1.0.4 To: duanewinner@att.net From: Dave Tweten Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/mixed ; boundary="==_Exmh_-11599817040" Date: Sun, 04 Jan 2004 16:01:25 -0800 Message-ID: <2456.1073260885@gilmore.nas.nasa.gov> Sender: tweten@nas.nasa.gov cc: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Subject: Re: ibm thinkpad t23 -- freebsd 4.9 X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list Reply-To: David.E.Tweten@nasa.gov List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 05 Jan 2004 00:01:29 -0000 This is a multipart MIME message. --==_Exmh_-11599817040 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii duanewinner@att.net said: >Does anybody have success stories and/or notes for getting FreeBSD 4.9 >(stable) working on a T23 with all the hardware? The good news is your T23 seems to be more like my other two; it has a Lucent lose-modem instead. I've attached the kernel configuration file for the machines similar to yours. I used the /usr/ports/comms/ltmdm loadable kernel module for the Lucent lose-modem. /usr/ports/sysutils/asapm, apmd, and apm provide power management. To handle hibernation, I used http://www.pc.ibm.com/qtechinfo/MIGR-4PESMK.html to create a hibernation partition on my hard disk. My Windows XP's Device Manager says that my NIC is Broadcom NeXtreme Fast Ethernet. I have used a Corega USB LAN Card with FreeBSD and have not encountered any problems. The reason why I want to use my Broadcom NeXtreme Fast Ethernet with FreeBSD is that I wanted to just switched from my 2 OSes and not have to take my LAN Cable on/off my NIC... I have searched the mailing list archives and found that some people are setting "device miibus" and "device bge" in their kernel configuration in order to use Broadcom NICs...If I do this, will this work on my laptop too? Or I really have to forget my Broadcom NIC and use my USB Corega LAN Card for FreeBSD? Thanks for any response, advice, and help... Rommel B. For modems you'd probably want something similar for supporting AC'97 modems which is what most winmodems are. It worked under 4-S just fine. It would be attached to by sio and assigned the next available sio*. This is a real hardware modem, Zoom 2975L, and at least putting it in no longer panics 5.x (which is what I was expecting, as that is what happened consistently previously). Having xe working is nice, but since bge works with the onboard controller, it's not strictly necessary. The onboard PCTel softmodem is another story. Does anyone else have one of these, and have they managed to make it work under 5.x? I've got a script I run under 4.9 on boot that checks to see if my wireless card is installed and then runs dhclient on it. For 5.1-whatever I've got these lines: removable_interfaces="wi0" pccard_ifconfig="NO" ifconfig_wi0="DHCP" pccard_enable="YES" pccard_mem="0xd8000" That works fine for me with a GENERIC kernel and a stock pccard.conf -- nothing special there. Substitute whatever your interface name is for "wi0" and it should work the same as mine does. I suspect your interfaces are getting confused because of the options you are trying. The configuration I've got listed above sets up the card and runs dhclient on it at boot. Have you tried leaving out all but the pccard_enable and pccard_mem lines to see if the interface will configure okay? You ought to be able to just do the dhclient ed1 that you tried before and have it just work. Would you be willing to move back to 4.9-RELEASE to see if you can get things to work there? I would suggest putting only the pccard_enable and pccard_mem lines into rc.conf and doing the dhclient call manually until we can figure out what is going on. As far as I know the hardware is standardized for pcmcia on I8k machines. I believe the I8100 has the same hardware for that as well. If it comes down to it I can start sending you config files (starting with the kernel configuration file). By the way, (just double checking here) -- your loader.conf file *does* contain userconfig_script_load="YES" right? I've had good success with my laptop (I even upgraded the video in it to get better 3D performance) and I'd like to do what I can to help you get the same satisfaction from yours. Am I the only person having troubles here? Cardbus used to at least fail gracefully (by not understanding what card was inserted) instead of bombing my network card (causing me to have to reboot). So here's the scoop - when I insert any cardbus card (but 16-bit pc cards are fine, and don't have the problem), it seems to try to detect it as a bge1 device, and destroys my working bge0 device (broadcom gigabit ethernet).
