I want to try it. Just FYI, I've picked up a few bits and piece from a company in Florida called "Fleeman Anderson & Bird." They have a ton of stuff, including panel antennas and many other things. They're at http://www.fab-corp.com/index.htm I'll bet they'll have something that will solve (or at least alleviate) your problem. I have no association with them, btw, I'm just a satisfied customer. -- Frank Mayhar frank@exit.com http://www.exit.com/ Exit Consulting http://www.gpsclock.com/ http://www.exit.com/blog/frank/ From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Feb 22 08:43:58 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7820016A4CE for ; Sun, 22 Feb 2004 08:43:58 -0800 (PST) Received: from illuin.org (firewall.illuin.org [66.141.59.1]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 0B7C043D2D for ; Sun, 22 Feb 2004 08:43:58 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from richard@illuin.org) Received: (qmail 63603 invoked by uid 1000); 22 Feb 2004 16:43:47 -0000 Date: Sun, 22 Feb 2004 10:43:47 -0600 (CST) From: Richard Letts X-X-Sender: richard@hobbiton.illuin.org Cc: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org In-Reply-To: <20040222154005.60590.qmail@restricted.dyndns.org> Message-ID: <20040222103717.F63573@hobbiton.illuin.org> References: <20040222062357.20054.qmail@restricted.dyndns.org> <1077447549.860.10.camel@amd> <20040222154005.60590.qmail@restricted.dyndns.org> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Subject: Re: weak signal X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 22 Feb 2004 16:43:58 -0000 On Sun, 22 Feb 2004, Neil Camara wrote: > Hey guys, > > I am overwhelmed by the links I've seen. Which one is good for my MA311? Any probbaly -- we're talking about devices that operate at the same frequencies here, so the antenna which is good for a Netgear MA311 should be good for any card with a SMA connector on it, and vice-versa. Now I'm actually sat in front of my machine I see the antenna I have is a SMC. I've no idea what the URL is, but the antenna itself loooks a little like a model of Cleopatra's Needle. part number SMCHMANT-4 if I'm reading this right "2.4Ghz Omnidirectional Home Antenna". I've noticed that using microwave ovens sometimes interrupts the signal, also. Workarounds relate to how you position your antennas in relation to one another, as well as what you do to relocate or shield potential sources of interference. In general, both transmitting and receiving antennae should be adjusted to be parallel to one another. Specifically, in this case, if your WAP is in the basement and your wireless network clients are on the first floor, you would want to orient your antenna elements so that they were horizontal, so that their signal would be directed upwards, towards the clients .... downwards, towards the basement ... and outwards, towards the neighbors' houses, on both sides ... in a circle, radiating outwards, with your antenna at the axis. Because, to the best of my knowledge, most 802.11b client cards - being PCMCIA-based - are inserted into horizontally aligned bays in the sides of laptops which sit on flat surfaces, it can be said sweepingly that most of the client card antennae are horizontally aligned - or, as we say in the radio business, their signals are -horizontally polarized-. However, because there is still some randomness in how the client cards are aligned - north-south, east-west, or some variation thereof - there is still a great deal of potential for signal loss, because these secondary details of antenna alignment also translate into alignment, or lack thereof, of the sending and receiving antennae, and, consequently, polarization, or lack thereof - with associated signal strength loss. A third factor is proximity. A WAP sitting on a table in the basement is five feet farther from its clients than it has to be. If you can perch the WAP atop a rack, or even attach the WAP directly to the ceiling, you are eliminating a few feet of unnecessary loss of what is already a fairly low strength signal. And there is a fourth factor - intervening equipment and materials. Some materials - such as concrete with a web of steel reinforcing ( 'rebar' ) in the center, or concrete with a high iron content, will absorb the signal. So will a file cabinet that is in the line of sight (although the top of the file cabinet would be a good place for the WAP). Having eliminated all of these factors, if your signal is still weak, you may wish to look into add-on antennas for your wireless card. The high-end cards all have antenna jacks which are more or less industry standard and with a little effort, one can locate small Yagi, and other, antennae, which are designed for the 2.4 gHz spectrum. (The notorious Pringles can antenna is only one of many available - see Google for details.) Making sure your antenna is solidly attached and that no leads are loose in the housing would not hurt, before you go replacing or augmenting your existing antenna, of course. Complementarily, everything described above can be used to shield multiple 2.4 gHz sources from one another, where desirable. Microwave ovens can be shoved up next to file cabinets, on a side away from wireless networks, for example, and wireless telephone systems can be similarly located so that their signals are less likely to overlap with your WAP clients - perhaps the telephone transceiver can be put upstairs, or in one corner of the house, on a shelf, as far away from the WAP as possible, for example. Having put all this solid information out for free, let me add that Daemonized Networking Services handles exactly this sort of installation and administration, for both business and residential customers, throughout the San Francisco Bay Area - please don't hesitate to call if we can be of service, professionally. A uni-directional antenna would either not allow the tivo box to connect, or me on the deck to connect, or my wife in the dining room. I'd need three directional antennae. /RjL From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Feb 23 06:54:46 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C4AFF16A4CE for ; Mon, 23 Feb 2004 06:54:46 -0800 (PST) Received: from otter3.centtech.com (moat3.centtech.com [207.200.51.50]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 77AC443D1F for ; Mon, 23 Feb 2004 06:54:46 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from anderson@centtech.com) Received: from centtech.com (neutrino.centtech.com [10.177.171.220]) by otter3.centtech.com (8.12.3/8.12.3) with ESMTP id i1NEskE8072563 for ; Mon, 23 Feb 2004 08:54:46 -0600 (CST) (envelope-from anderson@centtech.com) Message-ID: <403A1413.9020707@centtech.com> Date: Mon, 23 Feb 2004 08:54:11 -0600 From: Eric Anderson User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; FreeBSD i386; en-US; rv:1.6) Gecko/20040205 X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Subject: DRI on Dell notebook (with Radeon) X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 23 Feb 2004 14:54:46 -0000 I can't seem to get GLX (DRI really I suppose) working on -current. I tried it and did not see ANY debug info this time. I think that's a good thing. But on the 'ifconfig' output, the 'status' field stated that it was 'associated'. Just an observation. Also, am I to assume that the 'monitor mode' itself, does not increment thru the channels, it has to be done via the 'ifconfig' or ioctl in a program? You want to do the following: ifconfig ath0 mediaopt monitor up (where other stuff might be commands to set the channel). At that point you can run programs like Ethereal and tcpdump w/o the driver trying to associate with an AP. If you get the latest ethereal from CVS it has radiotap support which lets you look at frames "below the 802.11 layer". The tcpdump port likewise has radiotap support; you do tcpdump -i ath0 -y IEEE802_11_RADIO (I think, this is from memory). Sam The contents of this e-mail are intended for the named addressee only. To access the BIOS options in your toshiba laptop, right before it boots anything (when it's showing the "In touch with the Future" screen), press F1. It should take you to the BIOS screen, if yours is as mine, well, bad luck, the only option you will see is "Set default value? (Y/N) Bios v1.20". This means the only way to change the BIOS settings will be via a stinking windows application. Try looking for the PNP settings, mine didn't have them (¬_¬*** Toshiba will regret doing such a nasty thing some day!! ). >my laptop is a Satellite 5100-503 (I don't remenber the Us model >corresponding to it...) the sound card is a Yamaha AC-XG... > > Mine is an US 5205-503, and it does have the Yamaha AC-XG as well.. Let me guess your problem: the thing freezes on freeBSD 4.9 when you try adding the sound card to the kernel or kldloading it? Does it freeze right past something having to do with agp before FreeBSD 5.2 starts sysinstall? >thanks! > >dubouchet frederic > > However I must say I like very much the way FreeBSD 4.9 runs, even despite these issues. I hope the 5-STABLE branch works on my laptop when it comes out... can't wait to use my atheros wireless card... Hope you have better luck with it. If you manage to find a workaround, please let me know ;) Would you like me to send you my kernel configuration file? Have a great day! It's likely that 1.4.9 is not new enough to do the job. I believe that 1.7.4 is the current station level and I believe that this is the revision you need to resolve the issue. There is a work-around submitted by Marko Zec that involves adding to short delays to the driver after the reset. This has resolved the issue for me. The patch was posted to this list on January 10. Note that the line numbers may not match the driver you have, but searching for the string "set in the event status register." should find the spots. -- R. SMC and Linksys make great integrated CardBus adapters. The SMC adapters work with the dc(4) driver, and I do not recall the driver the Linksys ones use (I think lnc(4) but don't quote me on that one). I've got two of the SMC cards (8035TX and 8036TX) and they are wonderful to use. And I've also got a Linksys PCM100. All three work in FreeBSD 5.0, 5.1, and 5.2. They don't use dongles, and they only take up one Type-II slot (unlike the horrible Xircom cards that take up two Type-II slots). I paid ~$50 CDN for the Linksys at FutureShop, the SMC were gifts. The card is a Nvidia GeForce 4 4200. Also tried the ports/x11/nvidia-driver (built with -DWITHOUT_LINUX). But that said something about couldn't load kernel driver. Although the kldload nvidia worked fine. I found examples of XF86Config files for this in this list, but didn't help. The BIOS setting is set for LCD "expansion" when changed then it shows the same small display. Any ideas on how to get XFree86 with "nv" (or other) to use the full screen? Thanks, Jeremy C. This just means that the configured resolution isn't the same as the LCD resolution. You'll need to modify the generated XFree86 config to use the same resolution.Easy way is to modify the Screen section and add 2 lines. The first line you should add is 'DefaultDepth n' at the 'Screen' level. n being the bitdepth you want, usually 24. The second line should go under 'Depth n', where n is what you picked above, and looks like: Modes "1400x1050" where 1440x1050 is your LCD's resolution. This depends on the video driver detecting and forging modelines for your lcd's resolutions. You may need to increase the HorizSync and VertRefresh ranges so they encompass the sizes you want. You can generally fake these since refresh rates don't apply to LCDs the same way they do to CRTs, although usually the video driver munges the modes to work with your LCD anyway. The X startup output is useful to look at; it usually in /var/log/XFree86.0.log. This might point out why you aren't getting the best modes. Hope this helps. -- Doug White | FreeBSD: The Power to Serve dwhite@gumbysoft.com | www.FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Feb 24 20:55:29 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 04D5516A4CE for ; Tue, 24 Feb 2004 20:55:29 -0800 (PST) Received: from mta1-svc.business.ntl.com (mta1-svc.business.ntl.com [62.253.164.41]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4785B43D1D for ; Tue, 24 Feb 2004 20:55:28 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from bruce@cran.org.uk) Received: from box1.cran ([82.2.140.60]) by mta1-svc.business.ntl.com (InterMail vM.4.01.03.37 201-229-121-137-20020806) with ESMTP id <20040225045526.VPAT23028.mta1-svc.business.ntl.com@box1.cran>; Wed, 25 Feb 2004 04:55:26 +0000 Received: from box1.cran (localhost.cran [127.0.0.1]) by box1.cran (8.12.11/8.12.10) with ESMTP id i1P4ssBo004263; Wed, 25 Feb 2004 04:54:54 GMT (envelope-from brucec@box1.cran) Received: (from brucec@localhost) by box1.cran (8.12.11/8.12.11/Submit) id i1P4ssPS004262; Wed, 25 Feb 2004 04:54:54 GMT (envelope-from brucec) Date: Wed, 25 Feb 2004 04:54:54 +0000 From: Bruce Cran To: reed@reedmedia.net Message-ID: <20040225045454.GA4146@box1.cran> References: <20040224220552.D0C6F43D1D@mx1.FreeBSD.org> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20040224220552.D0C6F43D1D@mx1.FreeBSD.org> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.2i cc: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Subject: Re: X on Dell Inspiron 8500 is scaled to middle of screen X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 25 Feb 2004 04:55:29 -0000 On Tue, Feb 24, 2004 at 02:05:52PM -0800, reed@reedmedia.net wrote: > Using XFree86 4.3.0 from packages under 5.2 (i386). > XFree86 -configure created a config that worked > but the viewed display is only a small rectangle > in the middle of larger screen. > > This is a Dell Inspiron 8500. > XFree86 detected it as a "nv". > The card is a Nvidia GeForce 4 4200. > > Also tried the ports/x11/nvidia-driver > (built with -DWITHOUT_LINUX). > But that said something about couldn't load > kernel driver. Any ideas? I saw somebody mention, that maybe downgrading the firmware on the card would help - although I am willing to find a colleague with a windows-box to do this, I am somewhat perplexed. It does look more like a driver-problem to me - and the suggested firmware (5.0001) is very old indeed. TIA, -- Bye, Sonny! "Respect is fine, but actually I've always wanted to be feared." Under FreeBSD 5.2.1RC1 (i386) everything is supported except the internal winmodem and internal Broadcom 54g-based wireless adapter. Supported hardware on the laptop: Athlon 64 3000+, 512M RAM, 60G HD, CDRW/DVD-ROM, USB, Firewire, CF/Memory stick reader, Rhine II ethernet, 15.5" display with a ATI Radeon 9600 (requires XFree 3.99.xx). Very fast and quite affordable ($1300 after rebates from the local Best Buy). In order to get the ethernet controller and USB working I had to disable APIC support (same under Linux). ACPI seems to work fine under FreeBSD but Linux does not like the PCI handling and requires 'pci=3Dnoacpi'. So far I have had no luck getting FreeBSD 5.2.1-RC1 amd64 to boot on the laptop. The loader loads the kernel and displays the menu but upon before any messages from the kernel have shown on the console the machine locks. Same for NetBSD amd64. Linux amd64 works as well as FreeBSD i386 though. More info, including dmesg and pciconf info, can be found at http://www.fxp.org/jedgar/amd64/ Any help on getting FreeBSD amd64 supported would be greatly appreciated. --=20 Chris D. That being written, I do not see in the man pages anything about Spectrum cards in `man ath'. I have a line on one of these at a nice price, and would like to try it out. I am cheap about not purchasing a new top-of-the-line pccard, as my use of wireless will be pretty limited, so I would rather not shell out tons of cash for it. I can connect perfectly, and surf/do email, and so forth. However, I have to re-authenticate to the server every 2 minutes (the length of DHCP lease handed out). According to Orange WiFi, this is because the DHCP server sends some kind of a keep-alive ticket to the client every 2 minutes, and if the client does not respond, the lease is revoked. This functionality seems to rely on some non-standard features of the Microsoft Windows 2K/XP dhcp client, or wireless networking driver, since the same problem occurs on Macs and Linux. My question is -- has anyone heard of this kind of setup before? The drill is, one purchases a scratch card from the hotel test with a username/password pair, that is valid for a certain amount of time (e.g. 14 hours). Has anyone succeeded in getting authentication to stick with FreeBSD in such a configuration? I've been eyeing this machine as a posible replacement for my Dell Inspiron 8000 (hate giving up the 1600x1200 res screen though...) A few questions. I looked at your verbose dmesg and wasn't able to tell if your sound works (there are a bunch of mss_probe messages) and it looks as though you might be having some issue with the firewire ethernet mode (sbp messages). Could you clarify? Also, do the sleep modes work for you? "project evil" may help you with the wireless chipset. I don't know if it will talk to another card wirelessly, because I don't have any other (working) computers with wireless. I pulled this card out of a 3-year old linksys BEFW11S4 version 1, which will still route and switch, but can't seem to communicate wirelessly. When I put the 'instant wireless' prism2 card back in the linksys, I plug an actiontec prism2.5 card into my fbsd box and ifconfig it, but I get 'status: no carrier'. My actiontec works fine with a friend's laptop. (Sorry, I don't know what kind of wireless card he had, it 'just worked'.) I've already tried updating the firmware on the linksys, but that didn't fix anything. More, it did not update the firmware on the card. (the card has seperate firmware.) So my next try at fixing this piece of old hardware is going to be updating the card's firmware, and then plugging it back into into the box. However my only machine with a pc card slot has FreeBSD as its only installed OS, and I don't have space to install another OS. I've been reading http://linux.junsun.net/intersil-prism/ , which is naturally linux-centric, and it's been somewhat helpful, but I'm not running linux. (I would if I had space for it, but ...) So has anyone tried running the linux tools for updating the firmware under freeBSD's linux compatibility layer? I'm installing linux_base-8 for the first time as I send this. It works very well, from what I can tell (no access point to test with) under FreeBSD: wi1: at port 0x100-0x13f irq 9 function 0 config 1 on pccard0 wi1: 802.11 address: 00:01:24:f0:b4:61 wi1: using RF:PRISM2 MAC:HFA3841 CARD:HWB3163 rev.B wi1: Intersil Firmware: Primary (0.3.0), Station (0.8.3) wi1: 11b rates: 1Mbps 2Mbps 5.5Mbps 11Mbps However, in order to upgrade that ancient firmware with WinUpdate, I need a windows driver to run this card. Does anyone know where I can find a Prism II reference driver? Or an OEM driver that will work with this card? Thanks! -- Jesse Guardiani, Systems Administrator WingNET Internet Services, P.O. Mine won't resume properly from s3, but that is a bios issue (I upgraded the graphics card in my I8K for better performance with DRI). How is the battery life?
