Make sure IBM specifies it as a supported card, though; IBM has checks in the BIOS of many of its Thinkpads to make the machine refuse to boot ("Unsupported card" error during POST). I've got wpa_supplicant working on Linux with a port of the net80211 layer and an Atheros driver. Bringing it back to FreeBSD should be straightforward though there are some issues (wpa_supplicant gives you WPA1 and WPA2 (aka 11i) support with both PSK and .1x). This is still work in progress but pretty close to being "usable" (getting the Atheros driver finally reliable has been the hard part). Once things are stable my intent is to backport to FreeBSD but that may not happen quickly. Finding a motivated person with some kernel hacking skills would make things happen faster (much faster) and/or allow concurrent development under FreeBSD. 802.11i as a standard is probably in process (don't know the details). There have been WPA2 testathon-style get-togethers going on and the net80211+wpa_supplicant code will undergo formal testing pretty soon. I know that numerous companies are rolling out 11i support in products so it's likely not going to change substantially if it's not already in ballot. On the authenticator side the code I mentioned above has an 802.1x authenticator that needs a bit of work but was working well enough some time back to support multiple WinXP and OS X clients talking to FreeRADIUS and/or IAS backends. WPA authenticator support is incomplete and won't happen by me until later this year (I've got another project before I can return to that). But the good news is that I've done the biggest part of this work already in the net80211 layer (including all the crypto support). Of course adding support for non-Atheros h/w will take some work. But for Prism cards at least there is the Linux hostap code that has been working for a while to crib from. Getting things hooked up to the ndis emulation layer also shouldn't be a big deal as wpa_supplicant apparently works already with at least one of the Linux equivalents. Do I have options other than > removing USB support from the kernel? > > Ideas? Comments? First, S5 is a very deep sleep...power off. It only resumes by powering up and booting. S4 is suspend to disk. It requires that you build a hibernation partition on the hard drive. Without it, S4 will not work (but you noticed that.). This is indicated by the value of hw.acpi.s4bios. To get S3 (suspend to RAM) to work, I'd suggest building a kernel without SMP or APIC. The messages you are reporting are indicative of problems figuring out the interrupt routing for multiple processors, but you have only a single CPU. Turning off APIC (and SMP it it's enabled) should return to the simpler interrupt delivery. -- R. Kevin Oberman, Network Engineer Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) Ernest O. Heh, sounds like it's a "shutdown -h now", which is more or less what I saw on the screen the last time I tried. > S4 is suspend to disk. The lack of a hibernation partition is indicated the value of hw.acpi.s4bios? That's interesting. I will try a hibernation partition. From the sounds of it, it sounds like the best suspend strategy. I now have a clear milestone which will indicate I'm good to go with hibernation. > To get S3 (suspend to RAM) to work, I'd suggest building a kernel > without SMP or APIC. Upon rechecking, I see I did a make buildkernel KENCONF=LAPTOP.... and KENCONF != KERNCONF.... After compiling the correct kernel (the above worked on GENERIC by default), I no longer have the uhub issues. The existing issues after a resume are: - blinking cursor at top left (I'll try killing moused in /etc/suspend and starting it again in /etc/resume) - em0 is dead upon resume (I'll try killing dhclient, and starting it again, as well as setting). I keep getting laptop kernel: em0: The EEPROM Checksum Is Not Valid laptop kernel: em0: Unable to initialize the hardware At boot time, this problem is avoided with the following entry in /boot/loader.conf hw.pci.allow_unsupported_io_range="1" Any ideas how to set that upon resume? -- Dan Langille : http://www.langille.org/ BSDCan - http://www.bsdcan.org/ From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jun 14 01:37:04 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0534816A4CE for ; Mon, 14 Jun 2004 01:37:04 +0000 (GMT) Received: from pandora.afflictions.org (asylum.afflictions.org [64.7.134.90]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2EA8B43D2D for ; Mon, 14 Jun 2004 01:37:03 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from dgerow@afflictions.org) Received: from dementia.afflictions.org (dementia.afflictions.org [172.19.206.56]) (using TLSv1 with cipher DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by pandora.afflictions.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7768C78C7C; Sun, 13 Jun 2004 21:36:04 -0400 (EDT) Received: by dementia.afflictions.org (Postfix, from userid 1001) id 14C35170C3; Sun, 13 Jun 2004 21:35:38 -0400 (EDT) Date: Sun, 13 Jun 2004 21:35:38 -0400 From: Damian Gerow To: Dan Langille Message-ID: <20040614013538.GI12085@afflictions.org> References: <40CCA91C.15526.688692DD@localhost> <40CCC783.21535.68FD573F@localhost> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <40CCC783.21535.68FD573F@localhost> X-Operating-System: FreeBSD 5.2-CURRENT on a i386 X-GPG-Fingerprint: B3D7 D901 A53A 1A99 BFD6 E6DF 9F3B 742B C288 9CC9 User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.6i cc: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Subject: Re: suspend/resume issues on ThinkPad T41 under 5.2.1-RELEASE X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 14 Jun 2004 01:37:04 -0000 Thus spake Dan Langille (dan@langille.org) [13/06/04 21:32]: : The existing issues after a resume are: : : - blinking cursor at top left (I'll try killing moused in : /etc/suspend and starting it again in /etc/resume) : : - em0 is dead upon resume (I'll try killing dhclient, and starting it : again, as well as setting). As in minutes. dhclient em0 fails and reports several times in /var/log/messages that "send_packet: Network is down". "route -n flush" was instantaneous. To recap, I am trying this: kill -TERM `cat /var/run/dhclient.pid` ifconfig em0 0.0.0.0 ifconfig em0 down route -n flush ifconfig em0 up dhclient em0 > then, to kick it off, i can > > dhclient em0 ath0 This is where I have trouble still. /var/log/messages is showing three items related to em0: dhclient: send_packet: Network is down The above repeats several times, then: em0: The EEPROM Checksum Is Not Valid em0: Unable to initialize the hardware dhclient: New IP Address (em0): 10.0.0.25 dhclient: New Subnet Mask (em0): 255.255.255.0 dhclient: New Broadcast Address (em0): 10.0.0.255 dhclient: New Routers: 10.0.0.1 Yet, ifconfig em0 shows no IP address and no mask.... Attempts to manually set the em0 IP address result in the checksum error messages shown above. I am confused by this. I know that the the solution, at boot time, to this issue is to add the following to /boot/loader.conf: hw.pci.allow_unsupported_io_range="1" But I have no idea how to solve this at resume time. -- Dan Langille : http://www.langille.org/ BSDCan - http://www.bsdcan.org/ From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jun 14 04:13:52 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CD50016A4CE for ; Mon, 14 Jun 2004 04:13:52 +0000 (GMT) Received: from ran.psg.com (ip192.186.dsl-acs2.seawa0.iinet.com [209.20.186.192]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9B14E43D31 for ; Mon, 14 Jun 2004 04:13:52 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from randy@psg.com) Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1] helo=ran.psg.com.psg.com) by ran.psg.com with esmtp (Exim 4.34 (FreeBSD)) id 1BZir2-000KmG-1X; Sun, 13 Jun 2004 21:13:52 -0700 From: Randy Bush MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Message-ID: <16589.9727.538844.260373@ran.psg.com> Date: Sun, 13 Jun 2004 21:13:51 -0700 To: "Dan Langille" References: <16589.8380.184428.686582@ran.psg.com> <40CCED61.8663.699145CB@localhost> cc: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Subject: Re: suspend/resume issues on ThinkPad T41 under 5.2.1-RELEASE X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 14 Jun 2004 04:13:52 -0000 > ifconfig em0 up > dhclient em0 dhclient will up the interface > em0: The EEPROM Checksum Is Not Valid > em0: Unable to initialize the hardware i have had that. i don't remember what made it go away. are you -current? randy From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jun 14 04:19:43 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0653816A4CE for ; Mon, 14 Jun 2004 04:19:43 +0000 (GMT) Received: from bast.unixathome.org (bast.unixathome.org [66.11.174.150]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CB8C943D2F for ; Mon, 14 Jun 2004 04:19:42 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from dan@langille.org) Received: from wocker (wocker.unixathome.org [192.168.0.99]) by bast.unixathome.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 18A613D34; Mon, 14 Jun 2004 00:19:42 -0400 (EDT) From: "Dan Langille" To: Randy Bush Date: Mon, 14 Jun 2004 00:19:35 -0400 MIME-Version: 1.0 Message-ID: <40CCEF17.17295.6997F42F@localhost> Priority: normal In-reply-to: <16589.9727.538844.260373@ran.psg.com> X-mailer: Pegasus Mail for Windows (v4.12a) Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT Content-description: Mail message body cc: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Subject: Re: suspend/resume issues on ThinkPad T41 under 5.2.1-RELEASE X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 14 Jun 2004 04:19:43 -0000 On 13 Jun 2004 at 21:13, Randy Bush wrote: > > ifconfig em0 up > > dhclient em0 > > dhclient will up the interface > > > em0: The EEPROM Checksum Is Not Valid > > em0: Unable to initialize the hardware > > i have had that. i don't remember what made it go away. > > are you -current? I tried the above -current's when 5.2.1 detected em0, but gave the above errors. -- Dan Langille : http://www.langille.org/ BSDCan - http://www.bsdcan.org/ From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jun 14 04:23:03 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4971816A4CE for ; Mon, 14 Jun 2004 04:23:03 +0000 (GMT) Received: from ran.psg.com (ip192.186.dsl-acs2.seawa0.iinet.com [209.20.186.192]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1C44343D53 for ; Mon, 14 Jun 2004 04:23:03 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from randy@psg.com) Received: from localhost ([127.0.0.1] helo=ran.psg.com.psg.com) by ran.psg.com with esmtp (Exim 4.34 (FreeBSD)) id 1BZizk-000M6r-Sf; Sun, 13 Jun 2004 21:22:52 -0700 From: Randy Bush MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Message-ID: <16589.10268.385395.142482@ran.psg.com> Date: Sun, 13 Jun 2004 21:22:52 -0700 To: "Dan Langille" References: <16589.9727.538844.260373@ran.psg.com> <40CCEF17.17295.6997F42F@localhost> cc: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Subject: Re: suspend/resume issues on ThinkPad T41 under 5.2.1-RELEASE X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 14 Jun 2004 04:23:03 -0000 well, you're beyond my abilities/knowledge. my current s/r pain is that i can suspend once and resume once, and then can not suspend a second time; it powers right back up all by itself. randy From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jun 14 04:26:31 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 93C2716A4CE for ; Mon, 14 Jun 2004 04:26:31 +0000 (GMT) Received: from bast.unixathome.org (bast.unixathome.org [66.11.174.150]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 666DD43D48 for ; Mon, 14 Jun 2004 04:26:31 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from dan@langille.org) Received: from wocker (wocker.unixathome.org [192.168.0.99]) by bast.unixathome.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8C79A3D34; Mon, 14 Jun 2004 00:26:30 -0400 (EDT) From: "Dan Langille" To: Randy Bush Date: Mon, 14 Jun 2004 00:26:30 -0400 MIME-Version: 1.0 Message-ID: <40CCF0B6.6871.699E4899@localhost> Priority: normal In-reply-to: <16589.9727.538844.260373@ran.psg.com> X-mailer: Pegasus Mail for Windows (v4.12a) Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT Content-description: Mail message body cc: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Subject: Re: suspend/resume issues on ThinkPad T41 under 5.2.1-RELEASE X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 14 Jun 2004 04:26:31 -0000 On 13 Jun 2004 at 21:13, Randy Bush wrote: > > ifconfig em0 up > > dhclient em0 > > dhclient will up the interface > > > em0: The EEPROM Checksum Is Not Valid > > em0: Unable to initialize the hardware > > i have had that. i don't remember what made it go away. > > are you -current? Running FreeBSD 5.2.1-RELEASE p8. The card has firmware 5.00.03 I have been able to use this card with little problems on 4.9-RELEASE, but now that I've installed 5.2.1, I have been getting disturbing lockups. I noticed it yesterday while I was doing a "portinstall mutt". Three times it attepted to download the source tarball, and it would get anywhere fro 30-80% and my entire machine would just freeze, and I would have to do a cold restart. Going into X and using Mozilla, I would sporadically get the same problem. I know this was a problem before, and people have reported this problem when the MPI350 had the newer firmware, but downgrading the firmware to 5.00.003 always seemd to cure the problem. The other thing is that 'dmesg' produces no error output in regards to the 'an0' device, so I'm not even seeing any errors. The machine just freezes. This is all the dmesg information I get: an0: port 0x8000-0x80ff mem 0xd0400000-0xd07fffff,0xd0200000-0xd0203fff irq 11 at device 2.0 on pci2 an0: got RSSI <-> dBM map an0: Ethernet address: 00:02:8a:df:74:c4 an0: supported rates: 1Mbps 2Mbps 5.5Mbps 11Mbps Any advice or help would be greatly apprectiated. In my experience the APM emulation doesn't go as far as to enable apmd to run under ACPI. If I try to do so, apmd complains about not finding /dev/apmctl - which is correct as there is only /dev/acpictl. You can try this out by using -d to start apmd in the foreground. I still hope that I'm doing something wrong and would really love it to stay corrected by someone. ;-) Sincerely yours, Hank --jI8keyz6grp/JLjh Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Disposition: inline -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.4 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQFAz/6NXSKk5/a79toRAmTIAKDEOYV/UMBO7XgPDHROcLW228pQ9QCgwGa+ s1UqxzzK/c+kpwfuv7Kjo6s= =ZDoW -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --jI8keyz6grp/JLjh-- From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Jun 16 15:44:10 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id F217016A4CE for ; Wed, 16 Jun 2004 15:44:10 +0000 (GMT) Received: from unix18.sihope.com (unix18.sihope.com [207.195.195.18]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9ED9243D5A for ; Wed, 16 Jun 2004 15:44:10 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from adam@whee.org) Received: from adammxp (pc6.sihope.com [207.195.195.65]) by unix18.sihope.com (8.12.10/8.12.10) with SMTP id i5GFgPrn043201 for ; Wed, 16 Jun 2004 10:42:25 -0500 (CDT) (envelope-from adam@whee.org) Message-ID: <013b01c453b8$859cf340$41c3c3cf@office.sihope.com> From: "Adam Maloney" To: Date: Wed, 16 Jun 2004 10:42:24 -0500 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2800.1409 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2800.1409 Subject: Compaq Armada m700 Sound X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 16 Jun 2004 15:44:11 -0000 I saw a reference to this problem from a year or two ago, but apparently no one posted a solution. I have a Compaq Armada m700 notebook running FreeBSD 5.2.1-RELEASE-p8 The sound card is detected, and when I play something with xmms or mpg123, it appears to be playing, but no sound comes out. If I boot into Win2k sound works fine. I'd also be interested in hearing from anyone who has one of these and has gotten suspend working. I've had to add hint.acpi.0.disabled="1" to the boot config for now, otherwise it hangs when I close it. Please let me know if there is any other information I can provide that would be helpful. $ diff GENERIC LAPTOP1 273a274,276 > > # Local changes > device pcm $ dmesg | grep pcm pcm0: port 0x3000-0x30ff irq 11 at device 8.0 on pci0 pcm0: $ pciconf -l agp0@pci0:0:0: class=0x060000 card=0xb1100e11 chip=0x71908086 rev=0x03 hdr=0x00 pcib1@pci0:1:0: class=0x060400 card=0x00000000 chip=0x71918086 rev=0x03 hdr=0x01 cbb0@pci0:4:0: class=0x060700 card=0xb1130e11 chip=0xac1b104c rev=0x03 hdr=0x02 cbb1@pci0:4:1: class=0x060700 card=0xb1130e11 chip=0xac1b104c rev=0x03 hdr=0x02 isab0@pci0:7:0: class=0x068000 card=0x00000000 chip=0x71108086 rev=0x02 hdr=0x00 atapci0@pci0:7:1: class=0x010180 card=0x00000000 chip=0x71118086 rev=0x01 hdr=0x00 uhci0@pci0:7:2: class=0x0c0300 card=0x00000000 chip=0x71128086 rev=0x01 hdr=0x00 piix0@pci0:7:3: class=0x068000 card=0x00000000 chip=0x71138086 rev=0x03 hdr=0x00 pcm0@pci0:8:0: class=0x040100 card=0xb1120e11 chip=0x1978125d rev=0x10 hdr=0x00 none0@pci0:9:0: class=0x078000 card=0xb14d0e11 chip=0x044911c1 rev=0x01 hdr=0x00 none1@pci1:0:0: class=0x030000 card=0xb1110e11 chip=0x4c4d1002 rev=0x64 hdr=0x00 From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Jun 16 18:33:19 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3174116A4CE for ; Wed, 16 Jun 2004 18:33:19 +0000 (GMT) Received: from snickers.hotpop.com (snickers.hotpop.com [38.113.3.51]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BA9A343D49 for ; Wed, 16 Jun 2004 18:33:18 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from aaa777@bonbon.net) Received: from bonbon.net (kubrick.hotpop.com [38.113.3.103]) by snickers.hotpop.com (Postfix) with SMTP id B2156719AC for ; Wed, 16 Jun 2004 17:32:15 +0000 (UTC) Received: from lambda (pD9546ABA.dip.t-dialin.net [217.84.106.186]) by smtp-3.hotpop.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id C9086F98293 for ; Wed, 16 Jun 2004 18:03:20 +0000 (UTC) Message-ID: <004d01c453d1$5ae27f80$de01a8c0@lambda> From: "Ludwig Schreier" To: Date: Wed, 16 Jun 2004 20:40:07 +0200 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2800.1409 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2800.1409 X-HotPOP: ----------------------------------------------- Sent By HotPOP.com FREE Email Get your FREE POP email at www.HotPOP.com ----------------------------------------------- Subject: i) Questions on IBM Thinkpad A22m. ii) Plus: Thinkpad R40e additional words X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 16 Jun 2004 18:33:19 -0000 Howdy, mobile friends. i) Well, I reported about my R40e and it's still my most best computer running FreeBSD (and some Windows crap for 'be among the mass' reasons.) I'm going to buy another Thinkpad soon, but this time a second hand or at least old model because of the CPU and e.g. COM Port (which is totally ignored by most new Thinpad's). I can't see any need of new Technology, when geeking the terminal and having fun with it. I found someone selling a Thinkpad A22m and now the question is: Do you have any experience with it running FreeBSD Unix? This questions also includes questions about: - If the onboard ethernet will be supported. (I will ask the seller for it's chipset ... or at least more details on this) - If this (to me) mysthic "SpeedStep" CPU (actually it's a PIII with 1 GHz) is fully supported. (I will checkout the hardware faq later this day) - Everything fine with it? - Did you made and experience with it, using it, running FreeBSD? WHY THIS? Because I'm looking forward to safe time and buy it quickly the next few days. A research on the notebook would give me many answers / information I guess, but a 'word' is quiet more worth to me. ii) Some addition to the R40e: It's CPU, Intel Celeron with approx. 2000 GHz is _not_ the fastest computer I had. Could be a bus system and / or IDE harddrive reason too, but suddenly it's not for speed freaks. (I'm none) I believe that there is at least a second Thinkpad model that is suitable (compatible) to FreeBSD as the R40e is, but not Celeron nor Centrino CPU powered. So far... thanks in advance, Ludwig Schreier From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Jun 16 18:37:13 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2899A16A4CE for ; Wed, 16 Jun 2004 18:37:13 +0000 (GMT) Received: from bast.unixathome.org (bast.unixathome.org [66.11.174.150]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 02FBD43D31 for ; Wed, 16 Jun 2004 18:37:13 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from dan@langille.org) Received: from wocker (wocker.unixathome.org [192.168.0.99]) by bast.unixathome.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C0E193D40; Wed, 16 Jun 2004 14:37:02 -0400 (EDT) From: "Dan Langille" To: "Ludwig Schreier" Date: Wed, 16 Jun 2004 14:36:19 -0400 MIME-Version: 1.0 Message-ID: <40D05AE3.14774.76F5440B@localhost> Priority: normal In-reply-to: <004d01c453d1$5ae27f80$de01a8c0@lambda> X-mailer: Pegasus Mail for Windows (v4.12a) Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT Content-description: Mail message body cc: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Subject: Re: i) Questions on IBM Thinkpad A22m. ii) Plus: Thinkpad R40e additional words X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 16 Jun 2004 18:37:13 -0000 On 16 Jun 2004 at 20:40, Ludwig Schreier wrote: > I found someone selling a Thinkpad A22m and now the question is: > > Do you have any experience with it running FreeBSD Unix? I had an A22m 900 MHz model with 15" 1400x1050 Display and can't remember any serious problems beside those: [1] When using ACPI, the notebook powered on ~5 minutes after shutdown (no matter if I use -p or push the power button) that actually broke this laptop for me because it overheated. APM worked fine. [2] There were some graphic card whoes, when there's heavy activity on the screen (i.e. a fast scrolling terminal) pixels flickered near the scrolling area. This also happened with mplayer in window mode, fullscreen hadn't any problems. [3] xfree and bios protection for system or hdd (and APM) When using HDD or system protection (bios option) and suspending the laptop while in X, you won't see the small logo from the bios which tell's you to enter the password. The screen either remained black until the correct password was entered or the small logo was broken and just a pixel mess. | This questions also includes questions about: | | - If the onboard ethernet will be supported. (I will checkout the hardware faq later this day) The bios lowers the CPU Speed, no matter what OS you're using. When using ACPI you can control speedstep with FreeBSD by setting hw.acpi.cpu.throttle_max: 8 hw.acpi.cpu.throttle_state: 8 to approriate values. | - Everything fine with it? I'm struggling with Toshiba Libretto 1050ff, trying to install FreeBSD on it. The old notebook apparently cannot boot from anything but hard disk or Toshiba's external floppy, which I don't have and cannot find. Currently, it's running Win98. Disk is already partitioned, so I could use second partition... if only I'll be able to boot a kernel somehow. I've installed bootmanager, but that's all I've managed to do. bsdboot always hangs on attempt to load a kernel, and I haven't found any tool able either to start with FreeBSD installation image or to write minimal FreeBSD partition on disk. But there are some little questions i got. With XFree-4, the DPMS feature seems to not work properly. For example when typing "xset dpms force off" my former notebook (compaq armada) turned the display off, but the thinkpad just blanks. The X configuration is the same (since both notebooks feature an ATI RAGE graphics card), and Option "DPMS" is configured. Then, the T40 provides a builtin Intel wireless hardware (PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter). So, what's the correct kernel configuration to be able to use this one, and does the system respond to the "Fn-F5" key press (enable/disable wireless)? Despite this, i think i'm quite happy with my T40 :-)) Thanks in advance for any hints :) With kind regards, Frank Altpeter From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Jun 18 15:22:19 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2F99416A4CE for ; Fri, 18 Jun 2004 15:22:19 +0000 (GMT) Received: from coruscant.rfc1149.org (coruscant.rfc1149.org [217.160.130.147]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B698A43D48 for ; Fri, 18 Jun 2004 15:22:18 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from arne@rfc2549.org) Received: by coruscant.rfc1149.org (Postfix, from userid 110) id 767663CD6; Fri, 18 Jun 2004 17:21:33 +0200 (CEST) Received: from kamino.rfc1149.org (kamino.rfc1149.org [2001:8d8:81:11::2]) by coruscant.rfc1149.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 690FA3CC6 for ; Fri, 18 Jun 2004 17:21:31 +0200 (CEST) Received: by kamino.rfc1149.org (Postfix, from userid 1001) id 3EEAC358; Fri, 18 Jun 2004 17:21:30 +0200 (CEST) To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org In-Reply-To: <20040618132601.GA37679@murphy.planlos.de> (Frank Altpeter's message of "Fri, 18 Jun 2004 15:26:01 +0200") References: <20040618132601.GA37679@murphy.planlos.de> From: Arne Schwabe Date: Fri, 18 Jun 2004 17:21:30 +0200 Message-ID: <86hdt83n9h.fsf@kamino.rfc1149.org> User-Agent: Gnus/5.110003 (No Gnus v0.3) Emacs/21.3 (berkeley-unix) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 2.60 (1.212-2003-09-23-exp) on coruscant.rfc1149.org X-Spam-Status: No, hits=-4.9 required=5.0 tests=BAYES_00 autolearn=ham version=2.60 X-Spam-Level: Subject: Re: Some questions to IBM T40 X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 18 Jun 2004 15:22:19 -0000 Frank Altpeter writes: > Hi there, > > I recently got an IBM ThinkPad T40 and installed 5.2-CURRENT on it. > But there are some little questions i got. > > With XFree-4, the DPMS feature seems to not work properly. > For example when typing "xset dpms force off" my former notebook > (compaq armada) turned the display off, but the thinkpad just > blanks. I seem to recall that the Maestro-2 driver would bind to the hardware, but not work, but I can't be sure because I've had this in /boot/loader.conf for the last 4 years (my current laptop also has a Maestro3): snd_maestro3_load="YES" In reference to your other issue with suspend, I'm pretty sure APMD didn't work with the m700 when I tried it, but I don't recall whether I tried 3.x or 4.x and stuff is undoubtedly very different with ACPI & 5.x... Unfortunatelay I didn't find a solution, but I haven't searched intensely for a solution. But I think it is a X11 problem since I can turn the display off if I switch to the console. The X configuration is the same (since both notebooks > feature an ATI RAGE graphics card), and Option "DPMS" is > configured. This is an ThinkPad thing. First, you need John Baldwin's patch to /sys/dev/acpica/acpi_video.c to support DPMS. http://www.FreeBSD.org/~jhb/patches/acpi_video_dpms.patch It will be off by one line against current. The problem is that it will not cause xset to work. It will turn off the display when you suspend (S3). I think that we need a proper way to call this from vidcontrol or acpiconf as well as the proper patches to xset to make it all work. -- R. Oh, and strange hard-disk boundary weirdness on other partitions - but everything runs OK. My brother asked me a few days ago, and after some research I suggested the Dell D505 and D600 to him. Both are very well supported by FreeBSD (I've got a D800, a friend a D600, which were tested under -current). The D600 is smaller (some 2cm in each of width, depth and height) and has a mobile Radeon 9000 (which you were not interested in, but besides accelarated 3d it offers improved CPU performance, since the shared mem VGA of the i855G further reduces the memory throughput, which is already low because of the low FSB frequencies supported by mobile processors). The Latitude D505 and D600 are the business models, which I expect to be more rigid than the Inspiron series. Both are based on Pentium-M CPUs with 1.4 to 1.8GHz (the 1.7GHz Pentium-M in my D800 is faster than my Athlon XP2500). Further details (that's just a copy of what I suggested my brother, but I guess it is not way off of your requirements). D505 (fast CPU, DVD-RW, Fast Ethernet, Firewire, 802.11b/g, Bluetooth): * 1,7GHz Pentium-M, 2MB Cache (Dothan) * 512MB RAM (1*512MB, 1 free SO-DIMM slot) * 60GB hard disk * DVD-RW (in drive bay, can also hold 2nd battery) * 100baseTX Ethernet * 802.11b/g WLAN * IEEE 1394 FireWire * Bluetooth, IrDA * 1 PC-Card slot (Type I/II) * 1400x1050 LCD Display (15.0") * Intel 855G shared memory graphics * battery should last up to 6 hours (53Wh, 1h express charge) * 338 mm x 273 mm x 33,1 mm (W x D x H) * 2.3kg (but probably with lower weight battery that lasts 4h) * 1 year send-in warranty * WinXP Pro * ~1700 Euro (incl. delivery, w.o. VAT) D600 (slower CPU, DVD+CD/RW-Combo, Gigabit-Ethernet, 802.11b/g, Bluetooth): * 1.4GHz Pentium-M, 1MB Cache (200 Euro cheaper than 1.7GHz) * 512MB RAM (2*256MB, no free memory slot) * 60GB hard disk * DVD+CD/RW (in drive bay, can also hold 2nd battery) * 1000baseTX Ethernet * 802.11b/g WLAN * Bluetooth, IrDA, Smartcard-Reader * 1 PC-Card slot (Type I/II) * 1400x1050 LCD Display (14.1") * mobile Radeon 9000 with 32MB RAM * battery should last some 4.5 hours (48Wh, 1h express charge) * 315 mm x 257 mm x 30.8 mm (W x D x H) * 2.17kg (but probably only with 32Wh battery) * 3 years international next day on-site service * WinXP Pro * ~1500 Euro (incl. delivery, w.o. VAT) As I said before, this is just what I suggested to my brother, but it may also happen to suit your needs ;-) Except for the V.92 modem. all components are fully supported by FreeBSD (including Bluetooth and sound). And, in fact, the D600 above is what I'd buy myself, if I had to choose a new system today ... My friend, Naoki Fukaumi, was ported to NetBSD. He said that SEE ALSO: http://cvsweb.allbsd.org/cvsweb.cgi/ports/sysutils/sjog/files/patch-setbrightness%3a%3asetbrightness.c?rev=1.4&content-type=text/x-cvsweb-markup I think this is good for FreeBSD. But I don't confirm it is good. Anyone, would you please confirm it?
