There is another possibility; tone dialing is polarity sensitive where pulse is not. It may be worth your while to open up your jack and reverse the polarity of the wires that go to the center pins of the connector (usually red and green). This is more common if there has been some new jacks put in, or if someone has been working on your line recently. Polarity problems rarely happen from the cable splicers out in the trenches, but stranger things have happened. -----Original Message----- From: owner-freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org [mailto:owner-freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org] On Behalf Of Michael W. Oliver Sent: Saturday, July 03, 2004 6:37 AM To: mobile@freebsd.org Subject: [OT] RBEM56G-100 - tone b0rken but pulse works? Hey there mobile users, I have a OT question for you. I bought a RBEM56G-100 some time ago, based on the recommendations of a few folks on this list, and have been extremely happy with it... until yesterday. I started getting the strangest behavior out of the modem and wanted to get your take on it. When I try to dial a number using pulse dialing, it works fine. However, when I try to dial a number using tone dialing, the call doesn't go through. In fact, the modem isn't even sending the tones to the line... the dial tone keeps blaring away through the speaker even the tones are sent. I can pick up an extension and hear the pulses when using pulse dial, but when using tone dial, I hear no tones through the handset on the extension. I can hear through the PC speaker that the tones are being generated, but it is as if there is now some sort of disconnect between the tone sending thingamajig and the line. BTW, I am in central Florida and we had a whopper of a lightning storm yesterday. While I did hear a few pops on the line, none of my other equipment has been affected (fax, two other phones, modem on another pc). Is it probable that this RBEM56G-100's modem is so sensitive that it was zapped while none of my other equipment suffered? So, in your opinion, should I start hitting eBay for a new RBEM56G-100? Thanks for your time. -- Mike perl -e 'print unpack("u","88V]N=&%C=\"!I;F9O(&EN(&AE861E Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E122D16A4CE for ; Tue, 6 Jul 2004 15:47:23 +0000 (GMT) Received: from mail.iinet.net.au (mail-01.iinet.net.au [203.59.3.33]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 7F60743D39 for ; Tue, 6 Jul 2004 15:47:22 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from jne@iinet.net.au) Received: (qmail 3156 invoked from network); 6 Jul 2004 15:47:20 -0000 Received: from unknown (HELO ?192.168.0.10?) I have tried these with ACPI enabled and disabled, but the result is always the same. startx hangs at: (==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/XF86Config" The logfile reports nothing after the PCI probe stuff. The system doesn't lock up completely; it still responds to ctrl-alt-del, but that's all it will do. I can post logfiles and/or dmesg output if anyone thinks it'll help. Same for any type of pcmcia card. I read somewhere that FreeBSD doesn't support hot insertion of pcmcia devices. I believe if you want FreeBSD to bring it up you have to configure everything and reboot. It's clear this happens only during mountroot and it could be a trashed stack. The addresses, of course, are specific to my production -CURRENT kernel (I usually build kernel.debug), I couldn't get a panic (it kept complaining of not having enough room on my dumpdev, although I know for a fact I have enough blocks to cover physical memory which is 512MB on this box). This message occurs immediately after mountroot is attempted (it finds the root filesystem correctly) and after the ATAPI_IDENTIFY messages which others have reported (inspection of the ata driver suggests these messages are benign, but green@ has since posted patches which address the 'device atapicam' case): ---8<---8<--- Fatal trap 12: page fault while in kernel mode fault virtual address = 0x1ff01ff fault code = supervisor read, page not present instruction pointer = 0x08:0x1ff01ff stack pointer = 0x10:0xd3e9cb30 frame pointer = 0x10:0xd3e9cb54 code segment = base 0x0, limit 0xfffff, type 0x1b = DPL 0, pres 1, def32 1, gran 1 processor eflags = interrupt enabled, resume, IOPL = 0 current process = 1 (swapper) kernel: type 12 trap, code = 0 Stopped at 0x1ff01ff ---8<---8<--- (On entry into DDB: eip = 0xc05d4808, esp = 0xd3e9c97c, fp = 0xd3e9c980) We managed to get a backtrace using "show thr" as follows (we didn't transcribe the stack parameters, just the backtrace):- ---8<---8<--- kernload at 0x1ff01ff devfs_allocv at devfs_allocv+0x13c devfs_root at devfs_root+0x23 devfs_nmount at devfs_nmount+0xaf getdiskbyname at getdiskbyname+0xb1 setrootbyname at setrootbyname+0xb vfs_mountroot_try at vfs_mountroot_try+0xcf vfs_mountroot at vfs_mountroot+0x6b start_init at start_init+0x53 fork_exit fork_trampoline ---8<---8<--- I'll try to pin down the exact opcode/line in devfs_allocv() where the call stack appears to be getting to screwed up. Hopefully this helps continuing efforts to debug this problem. Regards, BMS
