I've had trouble getting the pcmica network card to work at all and was wondering what distribution is best for old laptops? I'm downloading 4.10 at the moment and will install it soon - but I have doubts that my card will be even be picked up at all. Do the new distros (5.*) have better support for old hardware? We've searched google / fbsd-mobile / etc, and have had no luck. We all use m0n0wall, which is based on freebsd 4.x. Lots of us use it as an AP for clients. The problem we are encountering is related to using wireless cards inside our embedded pcs instead of a separate AP. Whenever clients have power-saving mode enabled on their wireless cards, they cannot use the wireless connection, there is extreme connectivity issues. In my searching, I've noticed this seems to be a known issue with wi / hostap. I've heard rumors of a fix for this problem, but have been unable to find it. I and all other m0n0wall users would be greatly appreciative if anybody has any information on these troubles! Unfortunately, tellings the clients to turn off power saving mode is a non-option, they can't load the website since the connection is bad so even with a captive portal message asking them to, they'd never see it. Thank you for your time. :) Respectfully, David Orman From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Oct 25 13:23:33 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 481AE16A4CE for ; Mon, 25 Oct 2004 13:23:33 +0000 (GMT) Received: from blacksheep.csh.rit.edu (blacksheep.csh.rit.edu [129.21.60.6]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 240A143D46 for ; Mon, 25 Oct 2004 13:23:33 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from wxs@csh.rit.edu) Received: from fury.csh.rit.edu (fury.csh.rit.edu [IPv6:2001:470:1f00:135:a00:20ff:fe8d:5399]) by blacksheep.csh.rit.edu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8C87A9361; Mon, 25 Oct 2004 09:23:32 -0400 (EDT) Received: by fury.csh.rit.edu (Postfix, from userid 44963) id 4099214B9; Mon, 25 Oct 2004 09:23:32 -0400 (EDT) Date: Mon, 25 Oct 2004 09:23:31 -0400 From: Wesley Shields To: C P Message-ID: <20041025132331.GB29893@csh.rit.edu> References: <20041024074807.82458.qmail@web41309.mail.yahoo.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20041024074807.82458.qmail@web41309.mail.yahoo.com> User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.3i cc: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Recomendation needed X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 25 Oct 2004 13:23:33 -0000 On Sun, Oct 24, 2004 at 05:48:07PM +1000, C P wrote: > I'm installing freeBSD on an old laptop (gateway solo 2200). The models are not sold on all locations. There is the P2120 with a Crusoe and the P5020 and P7010 with the Pentium M at different clock speeds. I recommend to buy a second battery which fits into the CD-ROM drive slot. The keyboard is nearly as big as a normal keyboard. One alternative is the Portege series from Toshiba. They have different models with 12" screens. The resolution is 1024 * 768. They are also pretty light but I was told that the extra battery makes them bulky plus the CD-ROM drive is an external one. Nice and compact, under 2kg, 13" screen and it comes with a built-in optical drive, unlike the IBM X series. The battery life is a bit disappointing so I ended up getting a second one to go into the optical drive bay. It was for a windows using cow-orker so I can't comment on compatibility. - flip From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Oct 26 12:25:10 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6AEE416A4CE for ; Tue, 26 Oct 2004 12:25:10 +0000 (GMT) Received: from smtp.poczta.interia.pl (smtp.poczta.interia.pl [217.74.65.43]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2278043D46 for ; Tue, 26 Oct 2004 12:25:10 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from jay@interia.pl) Received: by smtp.poczta.interia.pl (INTERIA.PL, from userid 502) id 9CD50CFF14; Tue, 26 Oct 2004 14:25:08 +0200 (CEST) Received: from poczta.interia.pl (mi01.poczta.interia.pl [10.217.12.1]) by smtp.poczta.interia.pl (INTERIA.PL) with ESMTP id 088D6CFF81 for ; Tue, 26 Oct 2004 14:25:08 +0200 (CEST) Received: by poczta.interia.pl (INTERIA.PL, from userid 502) id 1DEAB18F3CD; Tue, 26 Oct 2004 14:24:52 +0200 (CEST) Received: from JAY (cqk124.neoplus.adsl.tpnet.pl [83.31.242.124]) (using TLSv1 with cipher RC4-MD5 (128/128 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by poczta.interia.pl (INTERIA.PL) with ESMTP id 7760418F3C6 for ; Tue, 26 Oct 2004 14:24:50 +0200 (CEST) Message-ID: <001a01c4bb56$bc8dfce0$43c1fea9@JAY> From: "Jay'ka ;)))" To: Date: Tue, 26 Oct 2004 14:24:25 +0200 MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2800.1158 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2800.1165 X-EMID: d7c81470 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-2" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Content-Filtered-By: Mailman/MimeDel 2.1.1 Subject: NVIDIA GeForce2 Go X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 26 Oct 2004 12:25:10 -0000 Hi, I found your address on the web and was wondering if you could help = me. Justin, my advice is to find a Windows XP mailing list, or NVidia mailing list. This is a FreeBSD mailing list (hence the "freebsd-mobile" and "@freebsd.org" naming of the email address you sent this message to) - we discuss laptops running the FreeBSD operating system. If you'd like to learn more about FreeBSD and why we like it so much, check out: http://www.freebsd.org/ Thanks, and good luck with your laptop! "Freesbie" just rebooted. If I had just 15 se- conds more, I would try "h" option, but no avail. Before finaly buy something like 9020, I'd like to know if some- one has comp alike? Does "h" (aka halt) stops system, as it should? Does "p" make power down? "Freesbie" is 1.0 (from 5.2.1). (And nx9020 goes with freedos! Hura three times!) Unfortunately I've been running into a lot of watchdog timeouts and pretty regular crashes. I've been intending to find the time to build a DIAGNOSTIC kernel, set up with a firewire link and gdb and see just what's going on. Well, tonight I did so. The upshot is that NDIS has troubles. I've already entered a PR for the first LOR I encountered; I ran into another as well, between the VM user map mutex and the ntoskrnl dispatch lock but I didn't trace it, just noted it and kept going, because I was really looking for the page fault I had seen at one point. Well, I think I found it. At least I found _one_ page fault; I don't know if it's the only one. This one, at any rate, is in ntoskrnl_wakeup(), called by ntoskrnl_timercall() (which is the same routine with the first LOR). The reason for the page fault is that while the argument is a valid pointer, the region it points to has been zeroed. It should have the right information for a ktimer but on the call to ntoskrnl_wakeup() it has been entirely cleared. I looked but saw nothing obvious that might explain this. At this point I'm too tired to continue but hopefully I can pick it back up later in the week. I just wanted to let people know about my findings so that those more familiar with the code might be nudged into taking a look at it. (Bill? You out there?) It's very clear to me, by the way, that NDIS hasn't ever been run with all the WITNESS and DIAGNOSTIC stuff turned on, since with the diag kernel it hit the first LOR as soon as it turned on the interface and the second pretty quickly thereafter. I would encourage anyone else who might be poking around in that code to turn on all the WITNESS stuff, INVARIANTS _and_ DIAGNOSTIC; I had been running with the first two but tonight was the first time I used the third and it definitely uncovered problems. Anyway, I'm tired and beginning to ramble. I hope this helps someone and, if not, well, I'll get back to it in a day or three. Oh, and NDIS is usable with these bugs, it's just annoying to have the laptop panic every day or two. I expect that from Windows operating systems, not from FreeBSD. -- Frank Mayhar frank@exit.com http://www.exit.com/ Exit Consulting http://www.gpsclock.com/ http://www.exit.com/blog/frank/ From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Oct 28 11:27:13 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 42F7C16A4CE for ; Thu, 28 Oct 2004 11:27:13 +0000 (GMT) Received: from ns.stare.cz (ns.stare.cz [81.95.102.106]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3EC9B43D31 for ; Thu, 28 Oct 2004 11:27:12 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from hans@stare.cz) Received: by ns.stare.cz (Postfix, from userid 1001) id 312DDB865; Thu, 28 Oct 2004 13:35:09 +0200 (CEST) X-Original-To: hans@stare.cz Delivered-To: hans@stare.cz Received: from mx2.freebsd.org (mx2.freebsd.org [216.136.204.119]) by ns.stare.cz (Postfix) with ESMTP id C2846B86A for ; Thu, 28 Oct 2004 00:33:03 +0200 (CEST) Received: from hub.freebsd.org (hub.freebsd.org [216.136.204.18]) by mx2.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 86BDF5652F; Wed, 27 Oct 2004 22:25:02 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org) Received: from hub.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 21BA616A4D6; Wed, 27 Oct 2004 22:25:01 +0000 (GMT) Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DDDC016A4CE; Wed, 27 Oct 2004 22:24:55 +0000 (GMT) Received: from ns.stare.cz (ns.stare.cz [81.95.102.106]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2658F43D1D; Wed, 27 Oct 2004 22:24:54 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from hans@stare.cz) Received: by ns.stare.cz (Postfix, from userid 1001) id 4BD5BB865; Thu, 28 Oct 2004 00:32:48 +0200 (CEST) Date: Thu, 28 Oct 2004 00:32:48 +0200 From: Jan Stary To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Message-ID: <20041027223248.GA67950@ns.stare.cz> Mail-Followup-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org, freebsd-questions@freebsd.org Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.2.1i X-BeenThere: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list Sender: owner-freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Errors-To: owner-freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Bogosity: No, tests=bogofilter, spamicity=0.500000, version=0.92.7 Resent-From: hans@stare.cz Resent-Date: Thu, 28 Oct 2004 13:35:09 +0200 Resent-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Resent-Message-Id: <20041028113509.312DDB865@ns.stare.cz> cc: freebsd-questions@freebsd.org Subject: snd_neomagic kldloads, then 5.2.1-p11 freezes X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 28 Oct 2004 11:27:13 -0000 Hello, I am running FreeBSD 5.2.1-p11 on a Dell Latitude LS notebook. (See KERNCONF and dmesg at the end.) Nearly everything is working fine, except for the sound chip. I built the sound stuff as modules (sound/pcm + sound/driver/neomagic, resulting in snd_pcm + snd_neomagic). When I try to insert the module, I get # kldload snd_neomagic pcm0: mem 0xfea00000-0xfeafffff,0xf7800000-0xf7bfffff, irq 10, device 0.1 on pci1 and then the system freezes. If I compile pcm right into the kernel, the freeze occurs during bootime with the same message. I also have wi0 running at irq 10 (see dmesg); when I don't use it (no card in, no device attached to wi0, irq 10 not used by anything), the freeze ocuurs all the same. Suspecting some conflict between devices using irq 10, I said hint.pcm.0.irq="5" in /boot/device.hints (irq 5 is not used by anything), but kldloading snd_neomagic still tries to use irq 10 - why is that? What is the right way of telling a device which irq to use? Before I even found that it is a NeoMagic, I built all the sound modules and tried kldloading them. Some of them just loaded and nothing happened (I probably don't have any device they could serve), some resulted in # kldload snd_ad1816 sio1: configured irq 3 not in bitmap of probed irqs 0x4000 sio1: port may not be enabled # kldload snd_ess sio1: configured irq 3 not in bitmap of probed irqs 0 sio1: port may not be enabled sio1: configured irq 3 not in bitmap of probed irqs 0 sio1: port may not be enabled sio1: configured irq 3 not in bitmap of probed irqs 0 sio1: port may not be enabled # kldload snd_mss sio1: configured irq 3 not in bitmap of probed irqs 0 sio1: port may not be enabled sio1: configured irq 3 not in bitmap of probed irqs 0 sio1: port may not be enabled sio1: configured irq 3 not in bitmap of probed irqs 0 sio1: port may not be enabled # kldload speaker sio1: configured irq 3 not in bitmap of probed irqs 0 sio1: port may not be enabled speaker0 port0x61 on acpi0 Why does kldloading a sound module have to do anything with sio1? Where is irq 3 'configured' to be used? (by the sound module?) So I also disabled sio1 in device.hints (hint.sio.1.disabled="1") - there is only one sio at the machine anyway. I use ACPI - does it have anything to do with my problem? (with ACPI, devices are 'on acpi0', not on 'on isa0' etc.) Thanks Jan This is my KERNCONF: # DELL -- kernel configuration file for FreeBSD/i386 on Dell Latitude LS ident DELL machine i386 cpu I686_CPU #options CPU_SUSP_HALT # suspend on halt #options CPU_UPGRADE_HW_CACHE # eliminates unneeded cache flushes #options PERFMON #hints "GENERIC.hints" # Default places to look for devices. #makeoptions DEBUG=-g # Build kernel with gdb(1) debug symbols options SCHED_ULE # ULE scheduler options INET # InterNETworking options INET6 # IPv6 communications protocols options IPSEC options IPSEC_DEBUG options BRIDGE options FFS # Berkeley Fast Filesystem options SOFTUPDATES # Enable FFS soft updates support options UFS_ACL # Support for access control lists options UFS_DIRHASH # Improve performance on big directories options MD_ROOT # MD is a potential root device options PROCFS # Process filesystem (requires PSEUDOFS) options PSEUDOFS # Pseudo-filesystem framework options GEOM_GPT # GUID Partition Tables. options COMPAT_43 # Compatible with BSD 4.3 [KEEP THIS!] options COMPAT_FREEBSD4 # Compatible with FreeBSD4 #options SCSI_DELAY=15000 # Delay (in ms) before probing SCSI options KTRACE # ktrace(1) support options SYSVSHM # SYSV-style shared memory options SYSVMSG # SYSV-style message queues options SYSVSEM # SYSV-style semaphores options _KPOSIX_PRIORITY_SCHEDULING # POSIX P1003_1B real-time extensions options KBD_INSTALL_CDEV # install a CDEV entry in /dev # Bus support.
