I'm not allowed to actually answer your question here, but maybe I can point you to some doc.s to help you out. According to 'man watch': "The watch utility allows the user to examine all data coming through a specified tty using the snp(4) device." According to 'man snp': "The kernel must be compiled with device snp or the snp device must be loaded, for these devices to be available." (Refer to the original man pages for more info.) Given those statements, refer to the following section of the handbook for advice on compiling a kernel and/or checking what configuration you used: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/kernelconfig.html Alternately, refer to the kld man page for information on loading kernel modules. The above links are just my guess of what may be happening. If you do already have the snp device available and/or continue to have trouble getting it to work, you're encouraged to write freebsd-questions@. (And, please include information on your kernel configuration, etc.) Regards, Clayton Rollins _________________________________________________________________ Get fast, reliable Internet access with MSN 9 Dial-up – now 3 months FREE! http://join.msn.click-url.com/go/onm00200361ave/direct/01/ From owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Jun 20 19:48:16 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2154816A4CE; Sun, 20 Jun 2004 19:48:16 +0000 (GMT) Received: from argent.heraldsnet.org (argent.heraldsnet.org [64.83.41.80]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D9B1043D49; Sun, 20 Jun 2004 19:48:15 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from jtrigg@spamcop.net) Received: from [192.168.1.3] (gules.heraldsnet.org [192.168.1.3]) by argent.heraldsnet.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 120E210D; Sun, 20 Jun 2004 15:48:09 -0400 (EDT) Date: Sun, 20 Jun 2004 15:50:20 -0400 From: Jim Trigg To: Dan Langille , freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org, freebsd-questions@freebsd.org Message-ID: <2147483647.1087746620@[192.168.1.3]> In-Reply-To: <20040620071002.22815AE064@nezlok.unixathome.org> References: <20040620071002.22815AE064@nezlok.unixathome.org> X-Mailer: Mulberry/3.1.0 (Mac OS X) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline Subject: Re: The FreeBSD Diary: 2004-05-30 - 2004-06-19 X-BeenThere: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Gathering place for new users List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 20 Jun 2004 19:48:16 -0000 --On Sunday, June 20, 2004 12:10 AM -0700 Dan Langille wrote: > These are the articles posted during this period: > > 15-Jun : IBM ThinkPad T41 > Installing and configuring FreeBSD and XFree86 > http://freebsddiary.org/ibm-thinkpad-t41.php?2 'Tain't there, McGee... I tried to mess around with some options, in sysinstall I checked enable PC card at startup, but that didn't help. If someone has had this kind of issue before, would you be so kind as to help me out with this? I am pretty new to UNIX, so I really don't know my way around yet. I actually used Linux (first Red Hat, then Fedora, then Debian) before I switched. I've been having problems with kernel panics lately, but I'm not asking for technical support; I've already got a debugging kernel and some crash dumps ready to send to whomever would be willing to take a look at them. No, I'm asking for moral support, as I've had some bad experiences asking for help on mailing lists in the past (it was my own local LUG, although I do admit I made the mistake of doing so when I was frustrated). As such, I'm fearful of sending this to anyone for fear of being told that I either didn't supply enough information or that the problem's too insignificant for anyone to solve. Yes, I know that the FreeBSD handbook says that the developers are very interested in these problems, but I'm still fearful of what may happen. I guess what I want to know is this: first of all, who or what mailing list can I send these two, and second, how likely is it that I'll either be ignored or get chewed out for this? I would suggest starting at: http://www.freebsd.org/support.html#mailing-list for a general overview of the mailing lists and a link where to read about each one's charter. I think the one you might be most interested in at this point is "How to get best results from the FreeBSD-questions mailing list" which can be found at: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/freebsd-questions/ There's a section on how to best formulate a question so that you can help others to help you. Its not necessary to subscribe to a mailing list to post a question. You can read the current week's list at: http://docs.freebsd.org/mail/current/ In your post, you might want to mention that you're not subscribed to the list and would appreciate a CC:. Its standard practice, but it won't hurt to mention it. > I guess what I want to know is this: first of all, who or what mailing > list can I send these two, and second, how likely is it that I'll > either be ignored or get chewed out for this? My guess is that freebsd-questions@freebsd.org would be your best starting place. Someone might suggest another list if they think the problem would be better addressed there. Not everyone reads every mailing list. I really don't think anyone will chew you out. That's just unacceptable behaviour for a FreeBSD mailing list. It very rarely happens. Most folks are willing to help in polite manner and I don't think you have anything to fear there. I've seen them called the friendliest, most helpful community that people have encountered. The subject line of your post should describe the problem very briefly so that it will get the attention of those interested. Often the developers are reading hundreds of emails a day and many lists so you can imagine how a subject of "Help" might get passed by. Kernel debugging is way out of my league so you won't see me involved, but I will probably read the discussion. Good luck with your problem Best regards, Randy -- From owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jun 22 23:14:20 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id F358E16A4CE for ; Tue, 22 Jun 2004 23:14:19 +0000 (GMT) Received: from ganzman.no-ip.org (cable-181-97.inter.net.il [80.230.181.97]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0981A43D49 for ; Tue, 22 Jun 2004 23:14:19 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from ganzman@ganzman.no-ip.org) Received: from [192.168.100.230] (HELO .domain.org) by ganzman.no-ip.org (CommuniGate Pro SMTP 4.1.5) with SMTP id 1260359 for freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org; Wed, 23 Jun 2004 02:16:38 -0400 Date: Wed, 23 Jun 2004 02:25:27 +0300 From: Ron Ganzer To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Message-Id: <20040623022527.5f5f83be.ganzman@ganzman.no-ip.org> Organization: X-Mailer: Sylpheed version 0.9.5-gtk2-20030906 (GTK+ 2.2.4; i386-portbld-freebsd5.2) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Subject: how do i set window transparancy in fluxbox? When I was beginning my adventure with FreeBSD I already knew that most popular acronyms among Linux users were 'RTFM' and 'STFW'. And after joining this mailing list and subscribing to some *bsd usenet groups I was really stunned that people didn't treat newbies the same way! Even if a new user is pointed to a section in a handbook it is done with an explanation, without some sort of rudeness that you can meet when you ask the same thing on Linux groups. This really helps to understand how to use BSD systems, how to deal with encountered problems and so on. Im using 0.99). So use /usr/ports/x11-wm/fluxbox-devel instead of the fluxbox if you want transparancy. Secondly you must use a good backgroud-setting-ap(see second link!) as background setter icm with fbsetbg. I recommend feh(/usr/ports/graphics/feh/ , but that's up to you. See here: http://www.fluxbox.org/docs/en/faq.php#menualpha And here: http://www.xs4all.nl/~hanb/software/fluxbox/fbsetbg.html I don't think you can make any arbitrary window transparant, the Fluxbox-graphics(menu, toolbar etc) can be made transparant. But for a transparant terminal you will have to use aterm or eterm...and firefox i don't know if it can be done. But if i am wrong please correct me! 2) For the menu part, type >fluxbox-generate_menu -h for help This will generate the menu (if you leave the -h out of course). First of all, thanks. :) You seem like a friendly bunch, and if you represent the FreeBSD community as a whole, then I think I'm going to like it here. This isn't the main reason why I switched to FreeBSD, of course, but every little thing adds up and this is definitely a good thing. As for what I've done, first, I've taken Shannon's advice and registered on freebsdforums.org (although now it seems to be bsdforums.org) under the name Meta_Ridley. Second, as for my problem, I'm having two problems solving it, neither of which I expect help on in this list, of course. Third, I've been in the freebsd_users community on LiveJournal for quite sometime under the name superpico, although I haven't been satisfied with the answers I've gotten there and I've usually been able to solve the problems I've asked about in thet community. Even with all this, though, I'm still glad there's someplace where we newbies can gather and talk. I like the idea of being able to help each other out, both morally and technically. - Dave On Wed, 23 Jun 2004 03:29:57 +0000 Krzysztof Sroka wrote: > On Tuesday 22 of June 2004 23:03, Randy Pratt wrote: > > I really don't think anyone will chew you out. I think you're best bet for reliable, accurate information is the FreeBSD mailing lists. They are the only "official" channel of support. The responses to questions on the mailing lists are read by many people and corrected if the advice given is incomplete or inaccurate. This is the "peer review" process. Often, you'll find the developers/committers participating in the process so you can't get much closer to the source than that. I'm not saying that information from other sites isn't helpful but I often wonder about the quality since it isn't typically undergoing a review process. This is why I encourage you to use the FreeBSD documentation and mailing lists as your primary means of support. I'm also of the opinion that casual reading of the mailing lists is time well spent. It keeps you up-to-date on problems that people are having and solutions that are found. You don't have to subscribe to read the lists, you can access them online at: http://docs.freebsd.org/mail/current/ If you go to the parent directory of that link, you can access the archives which go back years although its much easier to search them with: http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&group=mailing.freebsd The archives are a gold mine of information. Chances are, that if you have a problem, someone else has had it before. > Even with all this, though, I'm still glad there's someplace where we > newbies can gather and talk. I like the idea of being able to help > each other out, both morally and technically. I first installed FreeBSD 2.2.5 on Friday, February 27, 1998, at 2:04 PM MST so I've been around awhile but not a day goes by that I don't learn something new. I have a machine that 'dual' boots windows2000 and several versions of Linux (rh8, rh8, Fedora2, + others) and everything works fine. I have, over the last year tried installing FreeBSD 4.9, 5.2, 5.2.1, and I always end up with the same problem. The install seems to go fine, but when I boot, I get the message xl0: watchdog timeout and I have no networking. This CANT be a hardware problem, since the other OS run fine, yet Ive got to be awfully dense (and consistant) to get the same error with each release of FreeBSD.. So what am I doing wrong??? (They should CC you on any replies, so you don't need to subscribe. And, if you mention you're a newbie, they'll be extra nice :).) That said, I'm replying on newbies as I think they'd want more information anyways. After searching the mailing lists here: http://www.freebsd.org/search/search.html#mailinglists it seems likely that there *is* some subtle hardware issue. (Shared interrupts seem to be a popular cause; you may want to tinker around with that a bit.) If you don't get it figured out, you should write questions@ and include at least the model of motherboard, model of NIC, and what devices are installed/enabled. What slots are being used could be useful as well. And, if you possibly can, I would try to include as much information, as possible, on what resources the devices are using. It is also available at http://people.freebsd.org/~sue/newbies/fak.html FreeBSD-Questions@FreeBSD.ORG is the place to send all questions about installing, configuring, running and using FreeBSD. All help requests are handled by FreeBSD-Questions, including newbies questions. It is particularly important to send all installation questions and answers to FreeBSD-Questions so that they only appear in one place. FreeBSD-Newbies is different. We don't ask for FreeBSD help or answer how-to questions. It is a discussion forum for newbies. FreeBSD-Newbies provides a place for new FreeBSD users to meet and covers any of the activities of newbies that are not already dealt with elsewhere. Examples include helping each other to learn more on our own, finding and using resources, problem solving techniques, how to seek help elsewhere, how to use mailing lists and which lists to use, general chat, making mistakes, boasting, sharing ideas, stories, moral (but not technical) support, and taking an active part in the FreeBSD community. We take our problems and support questions to freebsd-questions, and use freebsd-newbies to meet others who are doing the same things that we do as newbies. We can help people to use the FreeBSD mailing lists and resources, or to interact more productively with the broader FreeBSD community. These are not support questions, and not technical, so we deal with them here. Everyone can help with these new user orientation requests. One of the things we do together is learn more effective ways to find help when we need it. Here are some suggestions: When something doesn't work the way you expect 1. First look at the errata for your release of FreeBSD at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/releases/ for the latest information and security advisories. 2. Search the Handbook, FAQ, and mail archives at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/search/search.html 3. If you still have a question or problem, collect the output of `uname -a' and of any relevant program(s) and email your question to FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. Mailing lists When you have a problem that you can't solve by yourself, there's only one support mailing list and that's FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. FreeBSD-questions helps with installation and basic setup as well as more general and advanced questions. You don't have to actually join freebsd-questions before asking a question there. Replies to your question will normally be sent to you personally as well as to the list. Just make sure you have read and followed the guidelines for posting, because you might find them different to what you're used to. If you do subscribe to freebsd-questions you'll have the advantage of seeing all of the recent questions and their answers. Before you post to FreeBSD-questions, please read the guidelines at http://www.lemis.com/questions.html Many of the people who answer FreeBSD-questions are very knowledgeable, but they get frustrated when they get questions which are difficult to understand. http://www.lemis.com/email.html is worth reading too. If you're not sure that you can follow these guidelines, come back and ask the other newbies for help on how to post an effective question to the support mailing list. Maybe your question has been asked before. If you search the mailing list archives at http://www.freebsd.org/search/search.html first you might get the answer right away. It's always worth trying. Other mailing lists (http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/eresources.html#ERESOURCES-CHARTERS) cover specialised areas and many are more developer-oriented. You'll need to read their charters carefully before participating, but it's probably a good idea to ask on either -newbies or -questions for advice about where to post a more specialised question. FreeBSD-announce is a very low volume read-only list for occasional announcements, such as notice of new releases, and the Really Quick Newsletter. It's worth subscribing to FreeBSD-announce too. Manuals You'll always be expected to show that you have made some effort to use the available documentation before asking for help. That's not always as easy as it sounds! If you know what documentation you need but can't locate it, send a brief query to FreeBSD-questions. If you don't know what you need, always have trouble finding it, or can't make any sense of it when you do, ask some patient newbies to steer you in the right direction. Anyone interested in writing or reviewing documentation for FreeBSD is encouraged to join the FreeBSD Documentation Project. Details are at http://www.freebsd.org/docproj/docproj.html Other resources A resource list is available at http://www.freebsd.org/projects/newbies.html to help new and inexperienced FreeBSD users to find relevant information quickly. It includes books, on line documents and tutorials, and links to web pages that other newbies have found useful for learning. If you have a suggestion for good material to be included, please write to freebsd-newbies and tell us about it. But I have seen people asking questions here! It is quite common for people to send the wrong kind of post to a mailing list. Because we're newbies it'll certainly happen here from time to time. The best thing to do if you see a message that doesn't belong on a list is to ignore it. There's always someone around whose job it is to sort these problems out privately. The posts to the lists go straight through, whatever their content. It is going to be confusing for a little while because we're all newbies so we all make mistakes. That's OK. One thing we're going to see a fair bit is people posting questions, believing they're doing the right thing by posting here as newbies, not realising how it works. If someone answers those questions the situation will snowball. There's nothing wrong with helping someone to redirect their question to freebsd-questions, but please do so gently. There's nothing wrong with the occasional mistake either. So all questions, requests for help, etc still go to freebsd-questions as usual. Ours is more of a discussion group, a place where newbies can relax with other newbies and focus more on our successes than on our temporary imperfection. We can talk about things here that are not allowed on freebsd-questions. We're also a bit freer to make the mistakes that we need to make in order to learn. _________________________________________________________________ Mailing list membership To Subscribe to FreeBSD-Newbies: Use the easy form at http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-newbies to subscribe to the FreeBSD-Newbies mailing list, or to change your subscription details if you are already a member.
