This should also make Fillipo's port easier (a bunch of depends). The other CMF ports are already in the ports tree. - CMFormController - CMFActionIcons - GroupUserFolder - PlacelessTranslationService Plone also includes Formulator. According to guys at #plone, Formulator is deprecated and unused by Plone2 (in fact Plone2-RC3 has very old version). I've already tested both (Plone1 and 2) with the more updated Formulator product provided by the zope-formulator port, and there are no issues (there shouldn't be as it's not supposed to be used). I hope that we can have a Plone2 port about the same time as it is released for other platforms. This should also make Fillipo's Good stuff. I was about to install the latest Plone 2 on a server just before i read this. I was just going to do it manually... but had been thinking someone really needs to make a port for it, even if it is plone-devel ... Another one I'm thinking a lot about for some time now is Zope 2.7. I don't use Zope 2.6 anywhere anymore that I can avoid it. Zope 2.7, while essentially, the same is so much nicer to handle and develop with, with the conf file, and zopectl. But most of all, Zope 2.7 is recommended to be run with Python 2.3. At long last, a Zope in sync with a more modern Python version... this solves so many headaches and incompatibilities. (I noticed your last post asking about fixing libxml2 to work for python 2.1... my answer is forget python 2.1 and zope 2.6...! But i understand this may not be practical for some people). I had been wondering if there shouldn't be a zope-devel port for 2.7. But I don't really understand how 2.6 and 2.7 co-exist. I just noticed Zope.org announcing that 2.6.4-RC1 and 2.7-RC1 are released at the same time... I've yet to find anything I couldn't get working on Zope 2.7. There have been a few glitches in the past, but they've all been sorted out ... at least the ones i've noticed. Maybe we should start thinking about about moving the zope port to Zope 2.7. Or maybe there will need to be a zope27 port, living along side 2.6? Ugly. There are some differences in the way Zope 2.7 prefers to install. I wonder how the Zope port maintainers view this. Zope 2.7, while it can be installed in a similar 'stand-alone' way to zope 2.6, prefers (and is much nicer) to be installed almost more like a "library", and then have a seperate instance directory to run out of. Almost makes me think it should be installed to /usr/local/lib/zope (which actually is where NetBSD installs Zope 2.6), and then an instance created at the current standard location /usr/local/www/Zope (perhaps the lib/zope should be lib/Zope, if anyone took up this idea, for consistency). But then if it is moved this could break all the product ports? Or at least require them all to be inreinstalled with an updated bsd.python.mk to go to the new location... the instance would stil have the /var directory, so the Data.fs can stay where it is... probably more of a pain that most poeple would want. Seems a shame to be stuck on the "old way" of installing zope though, when it is so much easier now to handle instances. At the moment I manually install Zope 2.7 to /usr/local/www/Zope just to maintain compatibility with all the ports. Then i create an instance elsewhere (though usually still under /usr/local/www), from which zope is actually run. Ah, it's just a little change... but gives much to think about. Maybe zope-devel should be zope 3 (-: I manually install zope 3 every once in a while just to see how it's going... it's starting to come together a bit. I don't have enough interest to make or maintain a port for it... but it would be fun if someone else did. (-; Anyhow, I can't really wait for the Plone 2 port... have to install it now (I think). But am pleased to hear that one is being worked on... it will make administration easier in the near future. -- Tim Middleton | Cain Gang Ltd | There are a thousand hacking at the branches x@veX.net | www.Vex.Net | of evil [but who] at the root. --Thoreau (W) From owner-freebsd-python@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jan 19 23:24:20 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-python@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id F384E16A4CE for ; Mon, 19 Jan 2004 23:24:19 -0800 (PST) Received: from etustar.ze.tum.de (etustar.ze.tum.de [129.187.39.96]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D6A7043D48 for ; Mon, 19 Jan 2004 23:23:56 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from estartu@etustar.ze.tum.de) Received: from etustar.ze.tum.de (estartu@localhost.ze.tu-muenchen.de [127.0.0.1]) by etustar.ze.tum.de (8.12.10/8.12.10) with ESMTP id i0K7NtDl069843; Tue, 20 Jan 2004 08:23:55 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from estartu@etustar.ze.tum.de) Received: (from estartu@localhost) by etustar.ze.tum.de (8.12.10/8.12.10/Submit) id i0K7NsiX069842; Tue, 20 Jan 2004 08:23:55 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from estartu) Date: Tue, 20 Jan 2004 08:23:54 +0100 From: Gerhard Schmidt To: python@freebsd.org Message-ID: <20040120072354.GA15559@augusta.de> References: <1074524749.77627.39.camel@wolverine.home.net> <200401200108.16367.x@Vex.Net> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-md5; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="C1iGAkRnbeBonpVg" Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <200401200108.16367.x@Vex.Net> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.1i cc: Tim Middleton Subject: Re: Preparation for Plone2 X-BeenThere: freebsd-python@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: FreeBSD-specific Python issues List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 20 Jan 2004 07:24:20 -0000 --C1iGAkRnbeBonpVg Content-Type: multipart/mixed; boundary="DSayHWYpDlRfCAAQ" Content-Disposition: inline --DSayHWYpDlRfCAAQ Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable On Tue, Jan 20, 2004 at 01:08:16AM -0500, Tim Middleton wrote: > I had been wondering if there shouldn't be a zope-devel port for 2.7. I think however everybody should move to Plone2, because I don't think 1.x is going to be developed further plus a lot of work was put into the migration scripts. > I had been wondering if there shouldn't be a zope-devel port for 2.7. If you keep 2.6 (which many might want to keep) add 2.7 then Zope will need to have the PYTHON_VERSION out of bsd.mk.python. Then something needs to autodetect your Zope version for zope ports, so that they build with the right python version. > But then if it is moved this could break all the product ports? ZOPEBASEDIR and ZOPEPRODUCTSDIR and any more variables that you can think of, can help with this process. I would think that now is the time to get these changes done, I agree with your Zope instances and moving it out of www, this is how apache does it, and I think you would be following convention rather than breaking it. I'll keep working on my CMF/Plone ports, but I think, we might need some sort of HEADS UP announcement including publicising this python mailing list, to get everybody interested involved in this discussion. -- "You keep using that word. The problem with 2.7 ist the restructured Products dir. Third Party > Products should go to $INSTANCE_HOME/Products rather then > $SOFTWARE_HOME/Products. There should be a way to tell Zope-Productports Yet another little controversy zope 2.7 may bring... where to install those third party products. I keep going back and forth on this... It seemed ot me cleaner at first to install 3rd party products in an instance home (as suggested above), just to make the distinction clear between products that are part of zope's base, and add-ons. This assumes a pattern of always installing Zope with one "main" instance. But then what if you have multiple instances you want to share third party products? You can't cleanly install multiple 3rd party zope packages into different instance homes simultanously from ports. Now you have to choose ... either one of the instances or zope's main product directory. As a (sometimes-with-zope-even) developer, I like to have a bunch of instances of Zope handy. Most 3rd party products which are established enough that someone has bothered to make a port for them, I want shared, so all instances have them available... things such as database adaptors, for example. So perhaps we need a specific knob for this as well. ZOPEPRODUCTDIR is okay, but a little awkward to make someone use to choose between instance Product directory a Zope's product directory. I was looking at your zope-devel port and it seems to create the instance in SOFTWARE_HOME. One can change the SZOPEBASEDIR, but one also must change it when making an instance or mkzopeinstance.py will not be found; and hence the ZOPEBASEDIR is set by that. Leads to another question. Should the ports Makefile support making instances other than the "main" one? I like the idea of "make instance"... but I think the INSTANCE_HOME should be more controllable. perhaps a ZOPE_INSTANCE_HOME knob.... if it is set then the third party apps install into its product directory; if not they install into zope's software products directory. By default it would not be set and would default the instance home to the software home. While we're at this, lets not forget that some 3rd party zope apps install as zclasses that need to be imported via the ZMI (installed to the Import subdirectory); and there are a few even which potentially have/are external methods and need to go into the Extensions subdirectories (hmm, someone should make a port for zshell). So ports need to know where these are as well.. and if they should install in an instance home or the software home. -- Tim Middleton | Cain Gang Ltd | But the trouble was that my hysterical fit x@veX.net | www.Vex.Net | could not go on for ever. --Dost (NFTU) From owner-freebsd-python@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jan 20 10:13:37 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-python@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AFD1016A4CE for ; Tue, 20 Jan 2004 10:13:37 -0800 (PST) Received: from smtp106.mail.sc5.yahoo.com (smtp106.mail.sc5.yahoo.com [66.163.169.226]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 4316E43D5D for ; Tue, 20 Jan 2004 10:13:14 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from kaeru@pd.jaring.my) Received: from unknown (HELO ?219.95.213.228?) Those ports all have compile time options for changing install directory (lets say zope instance dir). But they do not have ability to install multiples of the same ports with different install directories (or instances), which is the root of our problem. Is it because current ports system, cannot handle this situation well? Might be worth asking this to ports@ -- "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means." Some ports it depends on are already in ports tree, so you can put options for these already: - BTreeFolder2 zope-btreefolder2 - CMFQuickInstallererTool zope-cmfquickinstaller I have test versions of: CMFActionIcons: http://www.inigo-tech.com/developers/freebsd-ports/files/www/zope- cmfactionicons-0.9.bz2/view CMFFormController: http://www.inigo-tech.com/developers/freebsd-ports/files/www/ CMFFormController/view I've already done GroupUserFolder and PlacelessTranslationService ports. I'll submit the PRs for them, tomorrow, so they should be in the ports over the weekend. -- "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."
