Well, that took longer than I expected. I had typo-ed 'make' at one point, and didn't notice for awhile... http://people.freebsd.org/~gad/time-64/installworld_nk Is the magic script. Probably a little more elaborate than it needs to be, but I had plenty of extra time while waiting for 'make buildworld' to finish... This is the version I just used for a successful upgrade, except that I just added the if-clause to also copy 'xinstall' as the 'install' command. Given how much 'install' is called during 'installworld', I wonder why it isn't included in the files that are copied by the standard 'make installworld' target. http://people.freebsd.org/~gad/time-64/UPDATING.64BTT This is a possible writeup which could be committed at the same time as the script. Right now it's partially written for people willing to help *test* the above change, and partially written as if the 64-bit change has already been committed, and this is telling everyone how to update to it. So, it isn't perfect, but it does contain my complete and explicit list of steps that I believe people should follow. The one thing I haven't tested yet is a rebuild of modula-3 and cvsup on a 64-bit system, but I have that going right now. -- Garance Alistair Drosehn = gad@gilead.netel.rpi.edu Senior Systems Programmer or gad@freebsd.org Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute or drosih@rpi.edu From owner-freebsd-sparc64@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jan 12 11:02:21 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1A39216A4CE for ; Mon, 12 Jan 2004 11:02:21 -0800 (PST) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0DE1C43D5D for ; Mon, 12 Jan 2004 11:01:39 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (peter@localhost [127.0.0.1]) i0CJ1aFR025366 for ; Mon, 12 Jan 2004 11:01:36 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Received: (from peter@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.12.10/8.12.10/Submit) id i0CJ1ah3025359 for freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org; Mon, 12 Jan 2004 11:01:36 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Date: Mon, 12 Jan 2004 11:01:36 -0800 (PST) Message-Id: <200401121901.i0CJ1ah3025359@freefall.freebsd.org> X-Authentication-Warning: freefall.freebsd.org: peter set sender to owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org using -f From: FreeBSD bugmaster To: freebsd-sparc64@FreeBSD.org Subject: Current problem reports assigned to you X-BeenThere: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the Sparc List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 12 Jan 2004 19:02:21 -0000 Current FreeBSD problem reports Critical problems S Submitted Tracker Resp. Haven't found any way to play with the problem yet, it freezes at a rather bad point to work with it. It's not clear to me where these are defined, nor whether or not they could be replaced by calls to the usual stubs (_write, ...)--- I assume not. So before I added function declarations for them to shut up the compiler, I thought I'd ask. (With these `fixed', I believe libc will be WARNS=2 clean on all platforms.) We can enter the user trap handlers from anywhere, so we want to use the syscalls directly. The single and double underscored versions are weak references, and could be overridden from another library. libc_r does this with _write() and __write(), for example, and using those versions could lead to a deadlock when the trap happened while a lock was already held by this thread. __utrap_write() is only used to write fatal (or mostly fatal) error messages, so failing to lock properly is preferable to not reporting an error at all. Likewise, it is important that can reliably send signals to the process to indicate errors, and there are no reasons why wrapper versions would need to be used. > So before I added function declarations for them to shut up the > compiler, I thought I'd ask. > > (With these `fixed', I believe libc will be WARNS=2 clean on all > platforms.) You cannot install this system on the video console. You must use serial console. The FreeBSD/sparc64 port doesn't support the PGX video framebuffers. Also, there are problems with USB on sparc64, though I'm not sure if this has been resolved recently. It is currently running solaris 9 but I want to put freebsd on it because I am more familiar with freebsd. Before I do however, I need to figure out a few things. 1. How do I tell what video card is installed in the system? Solaris says afb0 whic isn't very helpful. I opened the case and looked but the card has no labels other then serial numbers. The problem is: I can't seem to find any details on how to do this and all my attempts have failed with "device sc" uncommented. [1]This guy claims he did it but the same config on my box fails with a boatload of errors related to atkbd. First of all, does syscons really work for this box? If so, what does the proper kernel config look like? If not, I promise I will quietly go away. I'm not a unix or sparc newbie but I am new to FreeBSD. I really like the monitor and keyboard on my U10, it'd be nice to actually use it. I can't find any mention of it in the install docs on the FreeBSD FTP server or web site. I had assumed it was a bootable filesystem for starting an installer (like OpenBSD's minirootXX.fs is), but my Ultra5 refuses to boot it. I guess I'm not surprised, though, since it doesn't look much like a filesystem when I view the first few bytes of the file, and it also seems rather bigger than a miniroot would need to be. So I guess at this point, I'm mostly just curious as to what it's for. thanks, Jeff From owner-freebsd-sparc64@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Jan 15 14:40:34 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8524416A4CE for ; Thu, 15 Jan 2004 14:40:34 -0800 (PST) Received: from tenor.codegen.com (tenor.CodeGen.COM [204.62.145.147]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0539343D7B for ; Thu, 15 Jan 2004 14:40:24 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from parag@codegen.com) Received: from tenor.codegen.com (localhost.codegen.com [127.0.0.1]) by tenor.codegen.com (8.12.6p2/8.12.3) with ESMTP id i0FMeNqc021610 for ; Thu, 15 Jan 2004 14:40:23 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from parag@tenor.codegen.com) Organization: CodeGen, Inc. Hi. I just now got 5.2-CURRENT running on my Blade using the code as of yesterday. I'm also seeing this slow keyboard behavior. I also see that usbd refused to start, claiming: No USB host controllers found This led to dmesg, from which the pertinent bit is below: ... fwohci0: vendor=108e, dev=1102 fwohci0: <1394 Open Host Controller Interface> mem 0x422000-0x4227ff,0x420000-0x4207ff at device 12.2 on pci0 fwohci0: Could not allocate irq device_probe_and_attach: fwohci0 attach returned 6 fwohci0: vendor=108e, dev=1102 fwohci0: <1394 Open Host Controller Interface> mem 0x422000-0x4227ff,0x420000-0x4207ff at device 12.2 on pci0 fwohci0: Could not allocate irq device_probe_and_attach: fwohci0 attach returned 6 ohci0: mem 0x2000000-0x2007fff at device 12.3 on pci0 ohci0: Could not allocate irq device_probe_and_attach: ohci0 attach returned 6 fwohci0: vendor=108e, dev=1102 fwohci0: <1394 Open Host Controller Interface> mem 0x422000-0x4227ff,0x420000-0x4207ff at device 12.2 on pci0 fwohci0: Could not allocate irq device_probe_and_attach: fwohci0 attach returned 6 ohci0: mem 0x2000000-0x2007fff at device 12.3 on pci0 ohci0: Could not allocate irq device_probe_and_attach: ohci0 attach returned 6 My guess is that the console keyboard is using the OpenBoot client interface or is being polled in some manner. Note the Firewire controller didn't get hooked up either. Neither shows up under /dev. I'm not familiar with the Sparc64/USB code to guess at what's wrong with the interrupt hookup. I think its mainly targetted if you want to do a netboot and you need a filesystem for the kernel to grab. Since all Suns have built in netboot capability, you could exploit that to do automated installs and the like, or just run diskless. -- Doug White | FreeBSD: The Power to Serve dwhite@gumbysoft.com | www.FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-sparc64@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Jan 16 17:13:22 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B789A16A4CE for ; Fri, 16 Jan 2004 17:13:22 -0800 (PST) Received: from ngw.bvu.edu (ngw1.bvu.edu [147.92.2.11]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C4BE543D2D for ; Fri, 16 Jan 2004 17:13:21 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from cacemic@bvu.edu) Received: from BVU-Gateways-MTA by ngw.bvu.edu with Novell_GroupWise; Fri, 16 Jan 2004 19:13:12 -0600 Message-Id: X-Mailer: Novell GroupWise Internet Agent 6.5.0 Date: Fri, 16 Jan 2004 19:12:37 -0600 From: "Michael Cacek" To: Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline Subject: Slow Console Input X-BeenThere: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the Sparc List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 17 Jan 2004 01:13:22 -0000 I recently installed freebsd 5.2 on a local sunblade 100 system. I had several problems with keyboard input throughout the install, but I eventually made it though. The problems that I had were as follows: Slow response time with keypresses. I had to use ctrl + n or ctrl + p to move though menu options(the options never lit up completely, only blinked..enough to show me that they were currently selected). It was a terrible experience, but I made it through, but now I have another problem. Upon rebooting, my console input is incredibly slow. I press a key and it takes around 1/2 a second for the letter to appear. I read that I could use kbdcontrol to change key rates, but whenever I try to issue a command with it, it reports back the following error: "inappropriate ioctl for device". Any help is much appreciated. The slow speed is simply not tolerable. This is my first freebsd install and I hope it won't won't be the last. Thanks ahead of time..
