I am using a=20 Sun Netra T1 105 with two 9GB SCSI drives. I want to mirror all=20 partitions (including the root) between the drives for redundancy. I'm=20 installing 5.2.1-RELEASE from a burned CD. I have gotten so far as to=20 have /usr and /var mirrored after a lot of hacking at it but couldn't=20 get the root partition mirrored. So I decided to start from scratch... The main problem I am having is that all of the documentation on Vinum explains how to install it with bsd labels instead of sun labels. The latest documentation I have tried following is which explains how to "install a conventional system then convert it to Vinum." When I create a partially overlaping "h" partition I get an error stating that the a partition overlaps with my "a" partition (the whole point, isn't it?) =20 and I have to edit the label again to fix it. Partition table before modifications: a: 530145 66 # / b: 1060290 0 # swap c: 17655435 0 # (whole disk) d: 530145 99 # /var e: 15534855 132 # /usr After modifications (reduced swap by 281 sectors at the beginning) and started h 16 sectors into the drive to skip the boot loader): a: 530145 66 b: 1060009 281 =20 c: 17655435 0 d: 530145 99 e: 15534855 132 h: 17655419 16 I would appreciate any pointers anyone has to offer in getting this working.. This would turn up this problem since time_t's are now 64bits, and int's are 32bits, and since sparc64 is a big endian platform, the first 32bits of a 64bit time_t are usually zero... Hope all is well for members on the list. I have a Enterprise 250 and am having problems getting FreeBSD installed on the box. I know I have to use the serial console to install, due to lack of support for Sun keyboards/terminals. My box does not have a floppy drive on it, so booting via CD is my only option. Has anybody made an install CD ISO that has the required boot options enabled to use the serial port as the console device so I can get FreeBSD installed on my machine, or any other options/pointers for me? I recently did an install on an Enterprise-250 using the snapshot CD available on many of the FTP mirror sites in the "snapshots/sparc64" directory. That CD has the 64-bit time_t change made in it so at this point it is probably the best thing to try first. That said, I haven't tried the normal 5.2.1 CD's in an Enterprise-250 but I don't know of any reason they should not work. -- Ken Smith - From there to here, from here to | kensmith@cse.buffalo.edu there, funny things are everywhere. | - Theodore Geisel | From owner-freebsd-sparc64@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Mar 30 14:06:10 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 83E4E16A4E4 for ; Tue, 30 Mar 2004 14:06:10 -0800 (PST) Received: from electra.cse.Buffalo.EDU (electra.cse.Buffalo.EDU [128.205.32.2]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2683D43D3F for ; Tue, 30 Mar 2004 14:06:10 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from kensmith@cse.Buffalo.EDU) Received: from electra.cse.Buffalo.EDU (kensmith@localhost [127.0.0.1]) i2UM698o022272; Tue, 30 Mar 2004 17:06:09 -0500 (EST) Received: (from kensmith@localhost) by electra.cse.Buffalo.EDU (8.12.10/8.12.9/Submit) id i2UM691q022271; Tue, 30 Mar 2004 17:06:09 -0500 (EST) Date: Tue, 30 Mar 2004 17:06:09 -0500 From: Ken Smith To: James.Gill@mci.com Message-ID: <20040330220609.GB22027@electra.cse.Buffalo.EDU> References: Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.1i cc: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Subject: Re: local-mac-address X-BeenThere: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the Sparc List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 30 Mar 2004 22:06:10 -0000 On Tue, Mar 30, 2004 at 04:36:43PM -0500, Gill, James wrote: > > >From the archive (and my experience yesterday) it seems that setting > local-mac-address? to true in the OpenBoot does not get seen by the OS yet > (5.2.1-p3). Yes, I'm afraid so. We have Creator3D working on Ultra-30/Ultra-60 but my Ultra-10 test machine locks up solid after blanking the screen if the Creator3D support is enabled in the kernel. It's something I'll look into at some point if nobody else gets a chance to look into it, though it will take me a while. I've been working on fixing a regression that happened with syscons, which I might have a patch for (initial version has been sent to someone for comment :-). This patch to sys/dev/syscons/syscons.c seems to work OK on my Ultra-60 with Creator-3D, which is the only machine I'm able to use syscons on. I'm building an i386 kernel with this same patch applied now to see if it causes any problems there. Does anyone see anything wrong with this? Kris, would you mind giving it a try on your Ultra-30? If you do test it don't forget to back out that temp patch I sent you for sys/sparc64/sparc64/machdep.c. It should still work with that patch in place but the point of this patch is to not need that patch. :-) Thanks... I just unpacked the installation sets I wanted onto the NFS server I am using and then used the /boot/loader from that. Just copy it into /tftpboot and then point DHCP to it and you should be fine. You'll need to tweak things a little since sysinstall hasn't run obviously. Which reminds me, I should update to 5.2.1. -- Greg Lewis Email : glewis@eyesbeyond.com Eyes Beyond Web : http://www.eyesbeyond.com Information Technology FreeBSD : glewis@FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-sparc64@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Apr 1 02:06:03 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 51CC016A4CE for ; Thu, 1 Apr 2004 02:06:03 -0800 (PST) Received: from axel.truedestiny.net (a185140.upc-a.chello.nl [62.163.185.140]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8512543D45 for ; Thu, 1 Apr 2004 02:06:02 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from ascheepers@vianetworks.nl) Received: from [10.0.10.10] (darkstar.workstations.thuis [10.0.10.10]) by axel.truedestiny.net (Postfix) with ESMTP id AF7AC4158 for ; Thu, 1 Apr 2004 12:06:00 +0200 (CEST) From: Axel Scheepers To: freebsd-sparc@freebsd.org Content-Type: text/plain Organization: Via Networks NL Message-Id: <1080813960.23245.31.camel@darkstar.workstations.thuis> Mime-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Ximian Evolution 1.4.5 Date: Thu, 01 Apr 2004 12:06:00 +0200 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Subject: Netbooting fails with Fast data MMU Miss X-BeenThere: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the Sparc List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 01 Apr 2004 10:06:03 -0000 Hi All, I just tried to netboot a netra-x1, but it fails with a Fast data MMU miss; Executing last command: boot net Boot device: /pci@1f,0/ethernet@c File and args: Using Onboard Transceiver - Link Up. 3d000 Server IP address: 10.0.10.3 Client IP address: 10.0.10.254 Console: OpenFirmware console FreeBSD/sparc64 bootstrap loader, Revision 1.0 (root@bobbi.cse.buffalo.edu, Mon Feb 23 17:51:19 GMT 2004) bootpath="/pci@1f,0/ethernet@c" boot: ethernet address: 00:03:ba:0b:c4:c1 Using Onboard Transceiver - Link Up. net_open: server addr: 10.0.10.3 net_open: server path: / Loading /boot/defaults/loader.conf Warning: unable to open file /boot/loader.conf.local Fast Data Access MMU Miss ok To do the netboot, I copied /boot from the 5.2.1 install cd to my /tftpboot. I tried this same thing a while ago with 5.0, which had the loaders split up. That version booted fine but I couldn't use the onboard nics, so that's why I tried 5.2.1. I'm not sure if this is the right way, but it seems to be able to find and load all it needs. (The warning is shown because I activated verbose in loader.conf) Any ideas what I can try next? I'm also a bit curious about about a small nfs problem I have whenever I try to netboot/mount from my router. I can only use -r=1500, higher values for nfs mounts hangs it. Netbooting the sparc from it is terrible slow. The router has only two interfaces, one to my cable modem, and the other is plugged in my lan switch. (62.163.185.140<->10.0.10.1--->switch) All the other boxes on the lan reach speeds as high as 10MB/sec. on the router with no additional options I get 80KB/sec. When I use -r1500 6MB/sec and with a tcp mount about 2MB/sec. Anyway, not really relevant for booting the sparc, but I thought someone might know what's causing this? Please CC me, I'm not on this list. I'm running an U1 diskless. You basically need to setup rarp (etc/ethers), dhcp and tftp. For tftp copy the sparc loader into the tftp directory with the appropriate name (IP address). harti From owner-freebsd-sparc64@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Apr 1 03:21:13 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6365F16A4CE for ; Thu, 1 Apr 2004 03:21:13 -0800 (PST) Received: from mtaw4.prodigy.net (mtaw4.prodigy.net [64.164.98.52]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5317A43D1D for ; Thu, 1 Apr 2004 03:21:13 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from kris@obsecurity.org) Received: from obsecurity.dyndns.org (c1e37eaee5af245cd1bca87d32c9ad9c@adsl-67-115-73-128.dsl.lsan03.pacbell.net [67.115.73.128]) by mtaw4.prodigy.net (8.12.10/8.12.10) with ESMTP id i31BLCKn018653 for ; Thu, 1 Apr 2004 03:21:12 -0800 (PST) Received: by obsecurity.dyndns.org (Postfix, from userid 1000) id 6B1F352145; Thu, 1 Apr 2004 03:21:12 -0800 (PST) Date: Thu, 1 Apr 2004 03:21:12 -0800 From: Kris Kennaway To: sparc64@FreeBSD.org Message-ID: <20040401112112.GA67140@xor.obsecurity.org> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="n8g4imXOkfNTN/H1" Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.2.1i Subject: 64-bit time_t packages uploaded X-BeenThere: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the Sparc List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 01 Apr 2004 11:21:13 -0000 --n8g4imXOkfNTN/H1 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline I'm about to upload the results of the sparc64 package build that just finished (the first since the 64-bit time_t changeover). 7444 packages built, compared to 7347 from the last full build in December -- that's a few hundred less than it should be, because a number of ports were broken at the time I started the build. Is ccd or vinum better for this? For the folks using one or the other, what significant, if any system overhead/problems has using either of these pieces of software caused? TYIA!
