You'll need to set up rarp and tftp on some other machine on the network. Just add something like '172.16.2.123 sunbox' to your hosts file, and map the mac address of the box to that ip address in /etc/ethers. Stick the firmware file into /tftpboot, and call it 'ip-in-hex'. Just run rarpd and inetd (uncomment tftpd) and 'boot net' the Ultra. Documentation on the JBus itself is also sparse. Don't know if it helps to persuade them to hand out documentation but you could mention that FreeBSD actually boots on USIII hardware up to the point where this documentation is now required: http://people.freebsd.org/~jake/dmesg.v480 Other documentation/datasheets nice to have: - Cassini and Saturn Gigabit Ethernet controllers - SUNW,lom, SUNW,lomh, SUNW,lomv, etc. devices - pmu device - Firehose devices (ac, clock-board, environment, sram, ...) Documentation nice to have but we can probably live without it: - SUNW,bbc-i2c, SUNW,envctrl, SUNW,envctrtwo, SUNW,rasctrl, etc., especially about how to control the fans - acpi-power device Thanks for your efforts! The driver was commited to HEAD. In 5.3R you need to apply the following patch. http://www.kr.freebsd.org/~yongari/cs4231.patch.53R I don't know it can be applied cleanly in 5.3R. But I believe you can fix it easily. Since the driver name was changed, you should use snd_audiocs. If you encounter any issues please let me know. Maybe not the video controller, or not well, but certainly you should be able to use it in serial console mode. > Problem being, FreeBSD doesn't support the SCSI controller (IIRC) on > Ultra2's, Yes, it does. Check the hardware compatibility page again (assuming that it has been appropriately updated). If it hasn't been updated, then a search of the archives of this mailing list should result in more up-to-date information. > so I'm wondering where I could acquire a low priced > Ultra5/10/anythingthatwouldwork ;) Try eBay. For example, they have a current listing for a Sun UltraSPARC 60 for a buy-it-now price of $49.99 (see ) or an Ultra 10 for a buy-it-now price of $135 ( ). I've seen various UltraSPARC machines going for even less. Of course, with anything on eBay, you're taking a certain risk. But with prices this low, you might be willing to take that risk. Also try your local universities and companies who may be excessing old equipment. They might just give you a machine for free. I know that Philip Paeps and I recently picked up something like fifteen excess Ultra10s (and other miscellaneous stuff) from a university that was giving them away, although I'm sure all those machines were allocated before we had even gotten our hands on them. Myself, I bought four U10 clones from a friend in the US who was helping his company unload them (the shipping to Europe cost me way more than the machines), I got one U2 from another friend here in Europe, and I helped put together a group purchase of a large set of machines that were being excessed in London, which resulted in several U5s that should be coming my way for a very reasonable price. I'm planning on using the U2 as my main firewall system, and using the U10s and U5s as a cluster playground. You just have to keep an eye out for these sorts of things. You never know what you might stumble across or where. -- Brad Knowles, "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." -- Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790), reply of the Pennsylvania Assembly to the Governor, November 11, 1755 SAGE member since 1995. Aha, that was the problem. I just downloaded another copy of the patchfile, and this one seems correct (it has the dmainit() function at least). Perhaps my browser had cached the old file? Hmm... no, the two patch files are different in size. I don't know what happened. Anyway, trying again, with a new cvsup and a fresh patchfile. But I'm afraid that there is some applications in ports are not ready for sparc64. For instance, xmms, beep-media-player which is fork of xmms, does not work without patches. xmms patch is available at: http://www.kr.freebsd.org/~yongari/patch-OSS.sparc64 If you need to mute internal speaker in order to use head phone, use "mixer speaker 0". > Thanks a lot for your efforts, Pyun! -- Regards, Pyun YongHyeon http://www.kr.freebsd.org/~yongari | yongari@freebsd.org
