Does anybody have any strong objections to this? If this is going to be done I plan to put dummy redirect web pages on http://www.FreeBSD.org/ports/ to replace the current category pages there so there shouldn't be problems with deads links there. The FreeBSD documentation uses http://www.FreeBSD.org/cgi/url.cgi for port references, so that would not be directly affected but would be changed to redirect to the appropriate port at the FreshPorts sites. BTW. I have asked Dan Langille and he's OK with the idea. [1] http://www.freshports.org/ --=20 Simon L. We should not totally outsource such > a critical part of the website to third party. Imagine that something First I don't really consider Dan a third party (committers has forgotten that he is actually not a committer on several occasions). Second I don't really think /ports/ (the web site) is that that critical. If it was, more people would have complained that for a very long time the ports web pages were very out-of-date. > happen to Dan and the freshports domain changes to porn site or > something... where we will be? Well, it a valid point, but in that case we would update the references to something else. As a last resort we could always resurrect the old /ports/ web site since it will of course stay around in CVS. To remove (potential/hypothetical) problem there could just be a .freebsd.org alias used for references, but I don't really know if there is a real advantage in that. --=20 Simon L. Maybe not experienced users, but I think that many newbies wouldn't know that the pages were out of date. I personally find the freebsd ports page to be much more straightforward and userfriendly especially at first. Once one is accustomed to ports and freshports.org, they may not use /ports/ anymore, but as a newbie, it is really nice to have. Of course, as I said, I didn't know about the pages being out of date. No, it wasn't really possible to see either unless one chekked count of the ports at the bottom of http://www.FreeBSD.org/ports/ , but the pages were based on information from the last release (the INDEX file =66rom CVS). > I personally find the freebsd ports page to be much more straightforward= =20 > and userfriendly especially at first. It's a bit hard to see just from the web server statistics if people actually use the content of the /ports/ pages. > Of course, as I said, I didn't know about the pages being out of date.=20 > Has that problem been addressed or is that the real issue here and I'm=20 > just totally missing the point (in which case sorry)? It has been fixed about a month ago (I think it was), so they should now in general not be more than 12 hours out-of-date compared to the actual state of the Ports Collection in the FreeBSD CVS repository. The reason for proposing to remove /ports/ was that I personally don't find the pages very useful, compared to freshports, and I have heard others say the same thing. --=20 Simon L. The translation teams update those pages themselves so they can get out of date. We should wait until they have MFC'ed. I currently don't know the status of the project, but i think they will follow quickly. Hope that answers your question, Kind regards, Remko (With the hat of Documentation project member). The german website has the variables set in www/de/includes.xsl not directly included from the main includes files. I have attached the patch to update the website (so you can see what is actually needed). As Remko said, in general the different translations project handles these updates themself. They have seperate external CVS repositories, so if we change things directly in the main repository it often gives them more work when merging stuff back. --=20 Simon L. The problem I have with making it the `official' reference is that it is controlled by a third party (and not the FreeBSD Project), so the influence we have on it are limited. Even if it is considered superior to the official site, I would vote for adding a link to it, but still having something official on FreeBSD controlled servers. We can add a link to the FreshPorts page to every port page, should this considered useful, but we should make clear that we are linking to a third party site with a possibly different publishing policy. -Oliver From owner-freebsd-www@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Nov 9 17:38:43 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-www@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C490416A4CE for ; Tue, 9 Nov 2004 17:38:43 +0000 (GMT) Received: from sina.sharif.ir (Homa.Sharif.EDU [81.31.160.34]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1269743D48 for ; Tue, 9 Nov 2004 17:38:40 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from falaki@ce.sharif.edu) Received: from ce.sharif.edu (ce.sharif.ac.ir [81.31.164.3]) by sina.sharif.ir (8.12.8/8.12.8) with ESMTP id iA9HcWKT030749 for ; Tue, 9 Nov 2004 21:08:33 +0330 Received: from ce.sharif.edu (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by ce.sharif.edu (8.12.10/8.12.10) with SMTP id iA9Hdo8P024582 for ; Tue, 9 Nov 2004 21:09:54 +0330 Received: from 194.225.42.29 (SquirrelMail authenticated user falaki) by ce.sharif.edu with HTTP; Tue, 9 Nov 2004 21:09:54 +0330 (IRST) Message-ID: <4889.194.225.42.29.1100021994.squirrel@ce.sharif.edu> Date: Tue, 9 Nov 2004 21:09:54 +0330 (IRST) From: falaki@ce.sharif.edu To: www@FreeBSD.org User-Agent: SquirrelMail/1.4.2 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain;charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-Priority: 3 Importance: Normal X-Virus-Scanned: ClamAV 0.80/576/Sun Nov 7 07:42:28 2004 clamav-milter version 0.80j on localhost X-Virus-Status: Clean X-sina.sharif.edu-MailScanner-Information: Please contact the ISP for more information X-sina.sharif.edu-MailScanner: Found to be clean X-Mailman-Approved-At: Wed, 10 Nov 2004 13:27:53 +0000 Subject: Article about BSD's in Farsi X-BeenThere: freebsd-www@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: FreeBSD Project Webmasters List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 09 Nov 2004 17:38:43 -0000 Dear sir/madam; Here is an article introducing the BSD family of Operating systems in Farsi published in Sharghnewspaper (Teheran). http://www.sharghnewspaper.com/830721/spc1.htm Mohammad H. Have you looked more at exactly what breaks? I checked ports.cgi and it seems it works for now (probably OK until 5.4/4.11) since it uses the local INDEX file on www.FreeBSD.org. =46rom a quick check of the main build makefiles I would say www/es/ports and www/ru/ports are now broken, but should be fixable by merging the PINDEX_OVERRIDE change from www/en/ports/Makefile. --=20 Simon L.
