Also do I need to do > anything special when I upgrade from version 4.3, like change config > files or something? I expect I have to rebuild all ports that depend on x. > Thanks, > Jason The xorg server in ports is part of progress towards switching our X over to X.Org/freedesktop.org libraries and providing the X.Org server. It doesn't cooperate with XFree86-4-libraries, and the x.org/fd.o libraries aren't a complete replacement for XFree86-4-libraries yet. If you don't want to experience pain, you should probably just use XFree86-4-snap. That said, I'm using it on my desktop. To try it, just switch the XFree86-4-libraries dependency in bsd.port.mk to point to xlibs instead, pkg_delete -f XFree86-4-libraries (leave clients and the rest of them), and go for it. -- Eric Anholt eta@lclark.edu http://people.freebsd.org/~anholt/ anholt@FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Mon May 17 22:30:26 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E1E8316A561; Mon, 17 May 2004 22:30:26 -0700 (PDT) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7128743D46; Mon, 17 May 2004 22:30:26 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from anholt@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (anholt@localhost [127.0.0.1]) i4I5UQrM095946; Mon, 17 May 2004 22:30:26 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from anholt@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from anholt@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.12.11/8.12.11/Submit) id i4I5UPXg095938; Mon, 17 May 2004 22:30:25 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from anholt) Date: Mon, 17 May 2004 22:30:25 -0700 (PDT) From: Eric Anholt Message-Id: <200405180530.i4I5UPXg095938@freefall.freebsd.org> To: ftigeot@wolfpond.org, anholt@FreeBSD.org, x11@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: ports/66682: [patch] x11-servers/xorg-server does not package on amd64 X-BeenThere: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: X11 on FreeBSD -- maintaining and support List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 18 May 2004 05:30:27 -0000 Synopsis: [patch] x11-servers/xorg-server does not package on amd64 State-Changed-From-To: open->closed State-Changed-By: anholt State-Changed-When: Mon May 17 22:30:04 PDT 2004 State-Changed-Why: Committed, thanks! http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=66682 From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Mon May 17 22:45:39 2004 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8372C16A4CF for ; Mon, 17 May 2004 22:45:39 -0700 (PDT) Received: from rwcrmhc11.comcast.net (rwcrmhc11.comcast.net [204.127.198.35]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B859A43D41 for ; Mon, 17 May 2004 22:45:38 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from eta@lclark.edu) Received: from [192.168.0.103] (c-24-21-18-195.client.comcast.net[24.21.18.195]) by comcast.net (rwcrmhc11) with SMTP id <2004051805453701300a37b8e>; Tue, 18 May 2004 05:45:38 +0000 From: Eric Anholt To: Kris Kennaway In-Reply-To: <20040518050229.GA55804@xor.obsecurity.org> References: <20040518050229.GA55804@xor.obsecurity.org> Content-Type: text/plain Message-Id: <1084859136.764.5.camel@leguin> Mime-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Ximian Evolution 1.4.6 Date: Mon, 17 May 2004 22:45:37 -0700 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit cc: x11@freebsd.org Subject: Re: [ports-i386@FreeBSD.org: xorg-server-6.7.0_1 failed on i386 5] X-BeenThere: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: X11 on FreeBSD -- maintaining and support List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 18 May 2004 05:45:39 -0000 On Mon, 2004-05-17 at 22:02, Kris Kennaway wrote: > More redundancy needed? > > Kris Works from here. These issues were mainly from adding PCI IDs blindly without verifying proper documentation. On top of that, some drivers do not care whether the bridge is supported or not and just attach as 'generic' bridge, e. g., agp_sis.c and agp_via.c. This gives users false hope and I believe this is wrong. I found the following from DRI website: http://dri.sourceforge.net/res/testgart.c and SuSE Linux had little newer package: http://www.suse.de/us/private/products/suse_linux/prof/packages_professional/testgart.html I modified SuSE's to work with FreeBSD. Test your GART before blaming on DRM/DRI! If aperture size is reported differently from BIOS setting, that is not supported correctly, e. g., i815 - different aperture size encoding and registers. If writeback test fails, that's more serious problem, e. g., K8T800 - doesn't work at all for me. BTW, you have to unload your drm driver (or recompile kernel if you compiled it in) before you test agp. I hope this helps many confused users. Cheers, Jung-uk Kim * PS: Is there anybody working on AMD64 on-CPU GART driver like this? http://fxr.watson.org/fxr/source/drivers/char/agp/amd64-agp.c?v=linux-2.6.1 Documentation is here (Section 3.6.11-14): http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/white_papers_and_tech_docs/26094.PDF --Boundary-00=_s1jqACQmfCTEW1t Content-Type: text/plain;
