Same deal with the FAQ. > The information is still available then, but we no longer have to tear > our own hair own trying to maintain the documents. The main problem with doing this is that it looks a lot like branching the docs, and I think this is something that not many people would like. For instance, what happens with corrections to the 4.X Handbook that people haven't noticed yet? Or what happens when we restructure parts of the HEAD of the Handbook, but fail to do so in Handbooks of earlier FreeBSD versions? Are we supposed to 'MFC' Handbook fixes about grammar, style, or even bugs in the existing examples to Handbook4? I have given a lot of thought to the fact that we are currently sprinkling elements around in a more or less "yeah, put them anywhere you like" manner. This looks & feels a bit wrong. I'm not sure if we can support a fully branched doc/ tree though. It would be nice to have a section of our website that is very similar to what one sees on docs.sun.com: - FreeBSD 4.X documentation set - Articles - Books - Handbook - FreeBSD 5.X documentation set - Articles - Books - Handbook etc. but that is something I've long postponed suggesting for fear of some huge, monstrous bikeshed. If we are to keep separate versions of the Handbook though, why not go all the way and organize the entire doc/ tree around FreeBSD releases? - Giorgos From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Oct 23 00:10:21 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 40AB016A427 for ; Sun, 23 Oct 2005 00:10:21 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 09F0C43D45 for ; Sun, 23 Oct 2005 00:10:21 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.3) with ESMTP id j9N0AKe4038997 for ; Sun, 23 Oct 2005 00:10:20 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.1/Submit) id j9N0AKEc038996; Sun, 23 Oct 2005 00:10:20 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Date: Sun, 23 Oct 2005 00:10:20 GMT Message-Id: <200510230010.j9N0AKEc038996@freefall.freebsd.org> To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org From: Giorgos Keramidas Cc: Subject: Re: docs/87351: Jail building instructions don't work as described with default CSH shell X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: Giorgos Keramidas List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 23 Oct 2005 00:10:21 -0000 The following reply was made to PR docs/87351; it has been noted by GNATS. I'd certainly support adding a note that these commands work fine fror sh(1) and other Bourne shells. Then we can probably add another set of commands for csh, if that seems nice to have. I was losing my erection during intercourse and during oral sex with my girlfriend. It was difficult to pinpoint the problem so I decided to order some Vjagrra online. I ordered my Vjagrra which arrived in several days. I ordered 4x100mg pills and on the weekend decided to give it a go without saying anything to my girlfriend ;) 35 minutes before we went to bed I took half a pill, and WOW! what a difference. I had a rock hard erection for over an hour of non stop sex. Even after I had climaxed I was ready to go again in twenty minutes, which we did. this lasted for over two hours, and I was still hard in the shower after. It was like being a teenager over again. Amazing! If you have a problem, try Vjagrra, it is great http://www.advicefom.com From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Oct 24 11:00:51 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DF24416A41F for ; Mon, 24 Oct 2005 11:00:51 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8D07943D45 for ; Mon, 24 Oct 2005 11:00:51 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (peter@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.3) with ESMTP id j9OB0pGL060882 for ; Mon, 24 Oct 2005 11:00:51 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Received: (from peter@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.1/Submit) id j9OB0ofY060876 for freebsd-doc@freebsd.org; Mon, 24 Oct 2005 11:00:50 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Date: Mon, 24 Oct 2005 11:00:50 GMT Message-Id: <200510241100.j9OB0ofY060876@freefall.freebsd.org> X-Authentication-Warning: freefall.freebsd.org: peter set sender to owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org using -f From: FreeBSD bugmaster To: FreeBSD doc list Subject: Current unassigned doc problem reports X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 24 Oct 2005 11:00:52 -0000 Current FreeBSD problem reports The following is a listing of current problems submitted by FreeBSD users. These represent problem reports covering all versions including experimental development code and obsolete releases. Bugs can be in one of several states: o - open A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed. a - analyzed The problem is understood and a solution is being sought. f - feedback Further work requires additional information from the originator or the community - possibly confirmation of the effectiveness of a proposed solution. p - patched A patch has been committed, but some issues (MFC and / or confirmation from originator) are still open. s - suspended The problem is not being worked on, due to lack of information or resources. This is a prime candidate for somebody who is looking for a project to do. If the problem cannot be solved at all, it will be closed, rather than suspended. c - closed A problem report is closed when any changes have been integrated, documented, and tested -- or when fixing the problem is abandoned. Your email was received and your request is currently being processed. The average response time for support inquiries is 24 business hours. During this time, please review the list of frequently experienced problems included below. The list covers the five most commonly experienced support issues, and outlines detailed steps on how to resolve each of these issues. We find that the answers contained below are able to resolve a majority of the support issues experienced by our customers. Our hours of operation are Monday - Friday, 9AM to 5PM Eastern Standard Time. Please do not reply to this email address. You will receive a personalized response from one of our customer support representatives shortly. FREQUENTLY EXPERIENCED PROBLEMS 1. Activation key does not work. (a) The activation system in Spyware Stormer is case sensenitive. This means that both the order number and the activation key must be entered in the same case in which they were provided (eg. abcd = lowercase) (eg. ABCD = uppercase). (b) If you accidentally include any spaces before or after the order number or activation key, the program will not accept the values entered. (c) "Zeros" Os and "Ohs" 0s are commonly interchanged for one another. If an O ("Oh")is entered in place of a 0 (Zero), then the key will not work. Please ensure that "Zeros" 0s and "Ohs" Os are entered correctly. To avoid the above problems, simply copy the key/order number to your computer's clipboard (CTRL + C) and then paste the key/order number into the appropriate field (CTRL + V). 2. Activation key is lost. If you have lost your activation key or order number, please reference the email in your inbox with the subject "ClickBank Receipt - automated notification." The email sender will appear as receipt@clickbank.com. In the body of the email you will find a link that, when clicked, returns you to the confirmation page on the Spyware Stormer website where you can retrieve your activation key and order number. Look for this text in the body of the email "If for some reason you did not receive access to the product immediately after payment, please try again by following this link now:" 3. Can't register the product. To register Spyware Stormer, you must return to the application and enter your order number and activation key. Begin by clicking "Start" on your computer's taskbar, then go to "Programs" and locate the "Spyware Stormer" folder. Then click the "Spyware Stormer" icon to open the application. Once the application loads, click the "Register" button located in the top-right corner of the application. Then, fill in your order number and activation key exactly as they appear on the confirmation page you were sent to after making your purchase. 4. Infections are not being fully removed. If you have scanned your computer for infections, removed them, and they are still appearing, this may be due to the following: If there are any Internet Explorer windows open while you perform the scanning and removing functions, some infections may attach themselves to the program, which prevents them from being removed. To remove these infections, you must ensure that all Internet Explorer windows are closed while performing the scanning and removing functions. I've found a gray zone in a piece of the Hanbook (Network Information System (NIS/YP)) and thought about submitting a PR so it doesn't get lost. I'm used to submitting 'ports' PRs, in which case you always CC the port maintainer and other interested parties. But being a foreigner to the docproj, I'm not familiar with common practices here. My first thought was to CC the chapter's authors. But their emails are not available in the final chapter nor in the SGML sources. Should I CC the mailing list? Or do you get these PRs anyway? After having set up NIS (at least a master server and a client), there is a section on 'Important things to remember' that address the issue of adding new users. I've found this information confusing. It correctly tells you that you should only add new users to the master NIS server. But it does not tell you WHERE you should add the new users. Should you use vipw and edit /etc/master.passwd? Or should you edit /var/yp/master.passwd? The answer is obvious for any experienced NIS user, but it's not for someone who has not used NIS before. Also, the example that follows seems to be misleading (pw useradd jsmith ...) If you run it without modification the new user would not be allowed to log in into NIS clients (i.e. it will not be propagated). This is because the new user will be added to /etc/master.passwd, while /var/yp/master.passwd will remain unchanged. This works only if you want to add new 'local' users. The chapter lacks information regarding how to create new 'network' users (those that will be allowed to log in into other NIS clients). See these threads for the kind of confusion that arises: http://docs.freebsd.org/cgi/getmsg.cgi?fetch=919628+0+archive/2002/freebsd-questions/20021124.freebsd-questions http://docs.freebsd.org/cgi/getmsg.cgi?fetch=71924+0+archive/1999/freebsd-isp/19990711.freebsd-isp Perhaps a note could be added clarifying this and mentioning the possible use of 'pw -V /var/yp' when adding new users? >How-To-Repeat: >Fix: >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Oct 25 17:37:31 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3376F16A41F for ; Tue, 25 Oct 2005 17:37:31 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from Mike.Verret@asrcenergy.com) Received: from moya.asrc.com (moya.asrc.com [209.165.183.146]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9127F43D5C for ; Tue, 25 Oct 2005 17:37:11 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from Mike.Verret@asrcenergy.com) Received: from asc-anc-xwall.corp.ad.asrc.com (asc-anc-xwall.corp.ad.asrc.com [10.40.3.195]) by moya.asrc.com (8.13.3/8.13.3) with ESMTP id j9PHb2A7001017 for ; Tue, 25 Oct 2005 09:37:03 -0800 Received: from asc-anc-exchfe.corp.ad.asrc.com [10.40.7.101] by asc-anc-xwall.corp.ad.asrc.com with XWall v3.35c ; Tue, 25 Oct 2005 09:37:01 -0800 Received: from aes-ni-exch.corp.ad.asrc.com ([10.30.172.20]) by asc-anc-exchfe.corp.ad.asrc.com with Microsoft SMTPSVC(6.0.3790.1830); Tue, 25 Oct 2005 09:37:08 -0800 Content-class: urn:content-classes:message MIME-Version: 1.0 Date: Tue, 25 Oct 2005 12:37:06 -0500 Message-ID: <1C493C6ECEE3954AB752175CF7498B250C20EA@aes-ni-exch.corp.ad.asrc.com> X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft Exchange V6.5.7226.0 X-MS-Has-Attach: X-MS-TNEF-Correlator: Thread-Topic: There is a dead link on your web site Thread-Index: AcXZirenVjMBkyJtS52uaCEpsyjnbA== From: "Verret, Mike" To: X-OriginalArrivalTime: 25 Oct 2005 17:37:08.0509 (UTC) FILETIME=[B928A4D0:01C5D98A] X-Spam-Flag: NO X-Scanned-By: milter-spamc/0.25.321 (moya.asrc.com [10.40.240.11]); Tue, 25 Oct 2005 09:37:11 -0800 X-Spam-Status: NO, hits=-2.40 required=3.50 X-Spam-Level: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Content-Filtered-By: Mailman/MimeDel 2.1.5 Cc: Subject: There is a dead link on your web site X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 25 Oct 2005 17:37:31 -0000 On your web page http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/faq/support.html#IRC There can be found two dead links HybNet =20 You link points to http://www.hybnet.net/ But is redirected to http://www.seeq.com/lander.jsp?referrer=3Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.freebsd.org%2F= d oc%2Fen_US.ISO8859-1%2Fbooks%2Ffaq%2Fsupport.html&domain=3Dhybnet.net&cm_= m mc=3D &=09 HybNet web site . Given how little of this script/instructions need to change to suit csh, something like... [...] #For csh set D=/here/is/the/jail #For bourne shells (sh,bash,...) D=/here/is/the/jail cd /usr/src mkdir -p $D [...] or [...] #For csh set D=/here/is/the/jail #For bourne shells (sh,bash,...) # D=/here/is/the/jail cd /usr/src mkdir -p $D [...] The former solution is both legible and functional. If you dump it on the command-line verbatim, it will produce an error for whichever environment export didn't work, but the process overall will work, and the latter is a little cleaner, and won't produce any errors with the base shell. A happy user experience overall. -Eli Giorgos Keramidas wrote: > Synopsis: Jail building instructions don't work as described with default CSH shell > > State-Changed-From-To: open->patched > State-Changed-By: keramida > State-Changed-When: Wed Oct 26 20:18:41 GMT 2005 > State-Changed-Why: > > I've just committed a note that points to sh(1) in CURRENT. > The change will be MFC'ed in a few days. I would definitely prefer to have both sets of instructions, but honestly given one line needs to be changed ever so slightly, it would look silly to reproduce the entire script multiple times with only that change. If you prefaced the script with "This script is optimized for csh, see below for other shells" and then just list the optimal way to export env. vars. for the other popular shells. Because we always have, and changing it at this late date would violate the Principle Of Least Astonishment (aka POLA). This has been a topic on the mailing lists many times and the conclusion has always been that too many people would become very unhappy if we changed it. Myself, it's the first change I make on any installed system. So, really, this issue has been debated and settled as far as almost everyone is concerned. mcl From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Oct 26 21:45:54 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8362E16A41F for ; Wed, 26 Oct 2005 21:45:54 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from keramida@ceid.upatras.gr) Received: from kane.otenet.gr (kane.otenet.gr [195.170.0.95]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B896C43D48 for ; Wed, 26 Oct 2005 21:45:53 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from keramida@ceid.upatras.gr) Received: from flame.pc (aris.bedc.ondsl.gr [62.103.39.226]) by kane.otenet.gr (8.13.4/8.13.4/Debian-1) with SMTP id j9QLjplE014937; Thu, 27 Oct 2005 00:45:51 +0300 Received: from flame.pc (flame [127.0.0.1]) by flame.pc (8.13.4/8.13.4) with ESMTP id j9QLjivp008503; Thu, 27 Oct 2005 00:45:44 +0300 (EEST) (envelope-from keramida@ceid.upatras.gr) Received: (from keramida@localhost) by flame.pc (8.13.4/8.13.4/Submit) id j9QLjhUS008502; Thu, 27 Oct 2005 00:45:43 +0300 (EEST) (envelope-from keramida@ceid.upatras.gr) Date: Thu, 27 Oct 2005 00:45:43 +0300 From: Giorgos Keramidas To: Mark Linimon Message-ID: <20051026214542.GA8453@flame.pc> References: <200510262020.j9QKKv4Q073769@freefall.freebsd.org> <435FE939.6070203@unixforge.net> <20051026204634.GA42792@flame.pc> <435FEEBE.7060907@unixforge.net> <20051026212525.GA21809@soaustin.net> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20051026212525.GA21809@soaustin.net> Cc: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org, "Eli K. It's only the default for root anyway. The default for mere mortal users is /bin/sh I think (if there even is a default). sh's syntax is the most widely used, so I'd expect it to be the syntax listed in manual pages (and I happen to use tcsh for my personal shell everywhere FWIW). -- John Baldwin <>< http://www.FreeBSD.org/~jhb/ "Power Users Use the Power to Serve" = http://www.FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Oct 29 08:50:09 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5432116A41F for ; Sat, 29 Oct 2005 08:50:09 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from andreas@klemm.apsfilter.org) Received: from srv1.cosmo-project.de (srv1.cosmo-project.de [213.83.6.106]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9B29F43D53 for ; Sat, 29 Oct 2005 08:50:07 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from andreas@klemm.apsfilter.org) Received: from srv1.cosmo-project.de (localhost [IPv6:::1]) by srv1.cosmo-project.de (8.12.10/8.12.10) with ESMTP id j9T8o6JG030597 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=EDH-RSA-DES-CBC3-SHA bits=168 verify=NO) for ; Sat, 29 Oct 2005 10:50:06 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from andreas@klemm.apsfilter.org) Received: (from uucp@localhost) by srv1.cosmo-project.de (8.12.10/8.12.10/Submit) with UUCP id j9T8o62k030596 for freebsd-doc@freebsd.org; Sat, 29 Oct 2005 10:50:06 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from andreas@klemm.apsfilter.org) Received: from titan.klemm.apsfilter.org (localhost.klemm.apsfilter.org [127.0.0.1]) by klemm.apsfilter.org (8.13.4/8.13.4) with ESMTP id j9T8k9YB005559 for ; Sat, 29 Oct 2005 10:46:09 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from andreas@titan.klemm.apsfilter.org) Received: (from andreas@localhost) by titan.klemm.apsfilter.org (8.13.4/8.13.4/Submit) id j9T8k8hU005558 for freebsd-doc@freebsd.org; Sat, 29 Oct 2005 10:46:08 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from andreas) Date: Sat, 29 Oct 2005 10:46:08 +0200 From: Andreas Klemm To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Message-ID: <20051029084608.GA3137@titan.klemm.apsfilter.org> References: <200510262020.j9QKKv4Q073769@freefall.freebsd.org> <20051026204634.GA42792@flame.pc> <435FEEBE.7060907@unixforge.net> <200510281149.27090.jhb@freebsd.org> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <200510281149.27090.jhb@freebsd.org> X-Operating-System: FreeBSD 6.0-RC1 X-Disclaimer: A free society is one where it is safe to be unpopular User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.11 Subject: Re: docs/87351: Jail building instructions don't work as described with default CSH shell X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 29 Oct 2005 08:50:09 -0000 On Fri, Oct 28, 2005 at 11:49:26AM -0400, John Baldwin wrote: > On Wednesday 26 October 2005 05:01 pm, Eli K. Many people use sh / csh because its the standard which is installed on every commercial (and of course free) unix system. csh brought a little comfort in the past where no bash or zsh or alike was available, since it has something like a commandline history which helped a lot for interactive typing. But csh was also known as to be a little buggy concerning programming. At least one could read this in books and articles at that time. I don't know if this is still the truth for nowadays csh's incl. tcsh. This lead to a situation, that most people use csh for interactive use and sh for writing portable scripts. If it comes to desaster recovery then you need to use a shell, that is capable to run even if your shared libraries are damaged. Or figure out the situation, that your shell is under /bin, but at the moment you can't mount /usr or whatever. Therefore for disaster recovery reasons many systems install a statically linked shell as /sbin/sh, which one would not use for every day usage because of the bigger size of the binary. We can be lucky, that we included tcsh as csh in FreeBSD. So we are still "standard" with respect to BSD history, but if the user / admin wants he has a little more comfort. But concerning real administration work or single user mode and such, I still see /bin/sh as the shell, which is invoked. To sum up, for me the Bourne Shell is the No. 1 standard for doing administration tasks, doing one liners. Normally you can execute "one line" commands the same way in every shell. If you have more complicated tasks, then you need a script with variables to avoid a huge number of lines or redundancy in typing. Perhaps for these more complicated stuff we could introduce the concept of a "shell box" in handbook ? Kind of an xml macro that makes up a box including code ? Perhaps with a nice warm pastell color (light steel blue or alike) which represents a "Bource Shell Script", which the user is adviced to type in shell or write to a file and execute with #! /bin/sh ??
