(the rest are pentiums at 100, 150, 200 and a k6-2 350 - all with bsd, but no gui. oh, my firewall is a 486 dx2 66 ) i just wish i could do more without linux emulation, but unless and until i get from nothing to up-to-speed on development (like; right?), i'll just keep enjoying all y'all's work. Thanks! anyway. i'm wanting to do some voice chatting with some folks. after much grumbling and resentment, i got linux-mozilla up with it's version of flash. now i can, at least, get into the chat room. however, attempting to use the mic gives me "linux: 'ioctl' fd=[29,32,33,34], cmd=0x4dfd ('M', 253) not implemented" errors everytime i access the mic settings property in the chat room (flashchat). i'm really not sure where to start looking, although i've been looking all over the place; x11, xfce, fbsd.org forums, pipermail forums, google. and i'm not even sure which linux site to start with! maybe i'm not using quite the correct mixer? (xfce4-mixer) should i use one of the other sound drivers? (alsa, arts, esd?) (pcm and oss) or do i not have enough linux emulation installed? linux-XFree86-libs-4.3.99.902_3 linux-divx4linux-5.0.20030428_1 linux-expat-1.95.5_3 linux-flashplugin-7.0r25_2 linux-fontconfig-2.1_3 linux-gtk-1.2_5 linux-mozilla-1.7.8_1 linux_base-8-8.0_6 gstreamer? please; as few gnome and (NO kde) libs as possible? other port suggestions that might help my plight would be welcome, as well! oh, i hate rebooting into w98 to chat with folks!! (xp prolly wouldn't run very nicely on this box anyway .. not as if i were at all interested in trying.) and i'll just be ok with not having a lot of webcam support yet, although i did manage to get the old cam actually to work in bsd! Yay! anyway. any thoughts y'all would care to share about that error would be greatly appreciated! as well, of course, any tips on using my mic (and webcam??)! thanks! wayne From owner-freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Aug 16 10:15:56 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6F62816A41F; Tue, 16 Aug 2005 10:15:56 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from Alexander@Leidinger.net) Received: from www.ebusiness-leidinger.de (jojo.ms-net.de [84.16.236.246]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BB68D43D49; Tue, 16 Aug 2005 10:15:55 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from Alexander@Leidinger.net) Received: from Andro-Beta.Leidinger.net (p54A5E006.dip.t-dialin.net [84.165.224.6]) (authenticated bits=0) by www.ebusiness-leidinger.de (8.13.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id j7GA9g51075599; Tue, 16 Aug 2005 12:09:55 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from Alexander@Leidinger.net) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by Andro-Beta.Leidinger.net (8.13.3/8.13.3) with ESMTP id j7GAEpIL071050; Tue, 16 Aug 2005 12:14:51 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from Alexander@Leidinger.net) Received: from 141.113.101.31 ([141.113.101.31]) by netchild.homeip.net (Horde MIME library) with HTTP for ; Tue, 16 Aug 2005 12:14:51 +0200 Message-ID: <20050816121451.laxikd1jeecs8sco@netchild.homeip.net> X-Priority: 3 (Normal) Date: Tue, 16 Aug 2005 12:14:51 +0200 From: Alexander Leidinger To: MS-KILA References: <43016BC5.70405@speakeasy.net> In-Reply-To: <43016BC5.70405@speakeasy.net> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-15; format="flowed" Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit User-Agent: Internet Messaging Program (IMP) H3 (4.0.3) / FreeBSD-4.11 X-Virus-Scanned: by amavisd-new Cc: ports@freebsd.org, freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org Subject: Re: linux issues - ioctl errors X-BeenThere: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Development of Emulators of other operating systems List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 16 Aug 2005 10:15:56 -0000 MS-KILA wrote: > anyway. i'm wanting to do some voice chatting with some folks. > after much grumbling and resentment, i got linux-mozilla up with it's > version of flash. now i can, at least, get into the chat room. > however, attempting to use the mic gives me "linux: 'ioctl' > fd=[29,32,33,34], cmd=0x4dfd ('M', 253) not implemented" errors > everytime i access the mic settings property in the chat room > (flashchat). i'm really not sure where to start looking, although > i've been looking all over the place; x11, xfce, fbsd.org forums, > pipermail forums, google. and i'm not even sure which linux site to > start with! > > maybe i'm not using quite the correct mixer? The error message is a report from the FreeBSD kernel that there's no support for this ioctl. The right support forum for this is emulation@FreeBSD.org. So you have to find someone who is willing to - lookup what this ioctl is supposed to do - write code for the FreeBSD kernel to support it (I assume less than 100 lines of code needed, but I may be wrong...) In many cases these ports are failing to compile on some subset of the FreeBSD build environments. The most common problem is that recent versions of -CURRENT include gcc3.4, which is much stricter about such things as function declarations, literal strings constants that continue over several physical lines, and forcing the deprecation of antique header files such as varargs.h (we should now be using stdargs.h). The next most common problem is that compiles succeed on the i386 architecture (e.g. the common Intel PC), but fail on one or more of the other architectures due to assumptions about things such as size of various types, byte-alignment issues, and so forth. In occasional cases we see that the same port may have different errors in different build environments. The script that runs on the build cluster uses heuristics to try to 'guess' the error type to help you isolate problems, but it is only a rough guide. If you need help in one or more build environments that you do not have access to, please ask for help on the freebsd-ports mailing list. One more note: on occasion, there are transient build errors seen on the build farm. Unfortunately, there is not yet any way for this algorithm to tell the difference (humans are much, much better at this kind of thing.) The build errors are listed below. In the case where the same problem exists on more than one build environment, the URL points to the latest errorlog for that type. (By 'build environment' here we mean 'combination of 4.x/5.x/6.x with target architecture'.) (Note: the dates are included to help you to gauge whether or not the build error still applies to the latest version. The program that generates this report is not yet able to determine this automatically.) portname: devel/linux_devtools-6 broken because: dependent on linux_base-6 build errors: none. overview: http://portsmon.FreeBSD.org/portoverview.py?category=devel&portname=linux_devtools-6 portname: devel/linux_devtools-7 broken because: Incomplete pkg-plist build errors: none. overview: http://portsmon.FreeBSD.org/portoverview.py?category=devel&portname=linux_devtools-7 If these build errors are ones that you are already aware of, please accept our apologies and ignore this message. On the other hand, if you no longer wish to maintain this port (or ports), please reply with a message stating that, and accept our thanks for your efforts in the past. Every effort has been made to make sure that these build errors really do correspond to a port that you maintain. However, due to the fact that this is an automated process, it may indeed generate false matches. If one of these build errors fits that description, please forward this email to the author of this software, Mark Linimon , so that he can attempt to fix the problem in the future. Thus we're almost free to remove COMPAT_43 from generic as nothing widespread uses it no more. removing COMPAT_43 has advantage of speeding up the kernel (take a look at gepid() function for example) and removing old code is always good :) the patch itself is a rewrite from old patch from dragonfly (I dont know author so sorry) and it was tested with "chroot /compat/linux /bin/bash; playing" and playing video with realplay - both worked as expected. the test was done on UP/i386 so I'd appreciate some testing on SMP etc. it currently supports just i386 but porting it to other archs should be quite easy thnx for suggestions, comments etc roman p.s. pls CC: me as I am not subscribed to emulation@freebsd.org From owner-freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Aug 20 11:14:06 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: emulation@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8721B16A41F; Sat, 20 Aug 2005 11:14:06 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from xdivac02@stud.fit.vutbr.cz) Received: from eva.fit.vutbr.cz (eva.fit.vutbr.cz [147.229.10.14]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E892943D45; Sat, 20 Aug 2005 11:14:05 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from xdivac02@stud.fit.vutbr.cz) Received: from eva.fit.vutbr.cz (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by eva.fit.vutbr.cz (envelope-from xdivac02@eva.fit.vutbr.cz) (8.13.4/8.13.3) with ESMTP id j7KBE27Z023829 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=EDH-RSA-DES-CBC3-SHA bits=168 verify=NO); Sat, 20 Aug 2005 13:14:02 +0200 (CEST) Received: (from xdivac02@localhost) by eva.fit.vutbr.cz (8.13.4/8.13.3/Submit) id j7KBE2xe023828; Sat, 20 Aug 2005 13:14:02 +0200 (CEST) Date: Sat, 20 Aug 2005 13:14:02 +0200 From: Divacky Roman To: current@freebsd.org, emulation@freebsd.org Message-ID: <20050820111402.GA23774@stud.fit.vutbr.cz> References: <20050820105751.GA23102@stud.fit.vutbr.cz> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20050820105751.GA23102@stud.fit.vutbr.cz> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.2i X-Scanned-By: MIMEDefang 2.49 on 147.229.10.14 Cc: Subject: Re: [PATCH]: linuxator _without_ COMPAT_43 X-BeenThere: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Development of Emulators of other operating systems List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 20 Aug 2005 11:14:06 -0000 On Sat, Aug 20, 2005 at 12:57:51PM +0200, Divacky Roman wrote: > hi > > I made a patch which enables linuxator to work without COMPAT_43 option in > kernel.
