With this BIOS version i had the same problem, you described. I needed a downgrade to BIOS A03 to get FBSD running. Today i tested the newest version A05 and it works, so give this BIOS a try, and i hope it will help. Regards Jerome-P. The relevant info of the BIOS A05 is following: 1. Fixed enhancement added in the A04 BIOS that added support for INT 13 DMA transfers (under DOS) when operating in protected mode. Problem with previous BIOS revision prevented accessing the systems hard-disk drive in DOS when running in a protected mode environment. AS an attachment i send the whole log. Regards Jerome-P. The machine is the i386 class, the ASUSRock K7S41GX with a fresh Seagate Barracuda disk, 300 GB. I have tried using the whole disk and automatic partitions. The installation first complains that the disk geometry is wrong (it finds the geometry with no help from me), but proceeds with creating the FreeBSD partitions. It accepts the other configuration data, and finally fails when it tries to write the FreeBSD partitions: Unable to find device node for /dev/ad0s1b in /dev! When viewed from Linux the geometry is the same, and the OS has no trouble writing partitions. FreeBSD can then see the partitions on boot, but gets the same error as when the disk was fresh out of the box. >How-To-Repeat: >Fix: >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Sep 10 13:40:13 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BF40F16A41F for ; Sat, 10 Sep 2005 13:40:13 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 12AA543D48 for ; Sat, 10 Sep 2005 13:40:13 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.3) with ESMTP id j8ADeCNB077933 for ; Sat, 10 Sep 2005 13:40:12 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.3/8.13.1/Submit) id j8ADeC3f077932; Sat, 10 Sep 2005 13:40:12 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Resent-Date: Sat, 10 Sep 2005 13:40:12 GMT Resent-Message-Id: <200509101340.j8ADeC3f077932@freefall.freebsd.org> Resent-From: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org (GNATS Filer) Resent-To: freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.org Resent-Reply-To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org, "Paweł Jaguś" Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2320616A41F for ; Sat, 10 Sep 2005 13:31:33 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from nobody@FreeBSD.org) Received: from www.freebsd.org (www.freebsd.org [216.136.204.117]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EB8A843D45 for ; Sat, 10 Sep 2005 13:31:32 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from nobody@FreeBSD.org) Received: from www.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by www.freebsd.org (8.13.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id j8ADVW0d069354 for ; Sat, 10 Sep 2005 13:31:32 GMT (envelope-from nobody@www.freebsd.org) Received: (from nobody@localhost) by www.freebsd.org (8.13.1/8.13.1/Submit) id j8ADVWGJ069351; Sat, 10 Sep 2005 13:31:32 GMT (envelope-from nobody) Message-Id: <200509101331.j8ADVWGJ069351@www.freebsd.org> Date: Sat, 10 Sep 2005 13:31:32 GMT From: "Paweł Jaguś" To: freebsd-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org X-Send-Pr-Version: www-2.3 Cc: Subject: i386/85944: FreeBSD restarts after showing "Welcome to FreeBSD" screen if the keyboard is not connected X-BeenThere: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: I386-specific issues for FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 10 Sep 2005 13:40:13 -0000 >Number: 85944 >Category: i386 >Synopsis: FreeBSD restarts after showing "Welcome to FreeBSD" screen if the keyboard is not connected >Confidential: no >Severity: serious >Priority: high >Responsible: freebsd-i386 >State: open >Quarter: >Keywords: >Date-Required: >Class: sw-bug >Submitter-Id: current-users >Arrival-Date: Sat Sep 10 13:40:12 GMT 2005 >Closed-Date: >Last-Modified: >Originator: Paweł Jaguś >Release: 5.4 >Organization: >Environment: Can't do uname -a because system can't even start correctly! >Description: FreeBSD system restarts if the keyboard is not connected. It happens right after presenting "Welcome to FreeBSD" screen after waiting for running default. If the keyboard is connected, everything is fine. My FreeBSD is installed on a computer with Intel 486DX100 processor with 20 MB RAM, 815MB hard disk. There are also three PCI netcards. Graphic card is Trident 512 KB. >How-To-Repeat: Just run the FreeBSD without keyboard plugged. >Fix: >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted:
