Its an old device but should still be usable. Unfortunately I can't get PCMCIA to work. In the BIOS you can configure the 'PC Card controller mode'. When I set it to PCIC compatible, I see nothing in the dmesg. When I set it to CardBus/16-but I see that the slots are detected. However, whenever I insert a PCMCIA device, like my Prims/2 based NIC, which works fine in my other FreeBSD devices, I get: CIS is too long -- truncating pccard0: Card has no functions! cbb0: PC Card card activation failed This must be a bug.. maybe its in the Toshiba ToPIC95B support ? I attached the following files: cardbus-pciconf.txt pciconf while using CardBus/16-but dmesg-cardbus.txt dmesg while using CardBus/16-but dmesg-pcic.txt dmesg while using PCIC compatibile mode Any help is appriciated ! ;-) Niels --qMm9M+Fa2AknHoGS Content-Type: text/plain; charset=unknown-8bit Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="cardbus-pciconf.txt" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit hostb0@pci0:0:0: class=0x060000 card=0x00000000 chip=0x06011179 rev=0xa7 hdr=0x00 vendor = 'Toshiba America Information Systems' device = 'Pentium Host Bridge for Notebooks' class = bridge subclass = HOST-PCI cbb0@pci0:2:0: class=0x060700 card=0x00000000 chip=0x060a1179 rev=0x07 hdr=0x02 vendor = 'Toshiba America Information Systems' device = 'ToPIC95B Toshiba ToPIC95 CardBus Controller' class = bridge subclass = PCI-CardBus cbb1@pci0:2:1: class=0x060700 card=0x00000000 chip=0x060a1179 rev=0x07 hdr=0x02 vendor = 'Toshiba America Information Systems' device = 'ToPIC95B Toshiba ToPIC95 CardBus Controller' class = bridge subclass = PCI-CardBus none0@pci0:4:0: class=0x030000 card=0x00000000 chip=0x00e4102c rev=0xc2 hdr=0x00 vendor = 'Asiliant (Chips And Technologies)' device = '65554 Flat Panel/LCD CRT GUI Accelerator' class = display subclass = VGA ohci0@pci0:11:0: class=0x0c0310 card=0x00000000 chip=0x00351033 rev=0x01 hdr=0x00 vendor = 'NEC Electronics Hong Kong' device = 'uPD9210FGC-7EA / µPD720101 USB 1.0 Host Controller (OHCI compliant)' class = serial bus subclass = USB --qMm9M+Fa2AknHoGS Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="dmesg-cardbus.txt" Copyright (c) 1992-2005 The FreeBSD Project. I used to have a 480CDT which has the same controller. Support for it has always been troublesome, but I think it works in FreeBSD 5.x. Otherwise PCIC mode should work, but then you need the OLDCARD kernel and I'm not sure if FreeBSD 6 still has that. Try compiling a kernel without device cbb device pccard device cardbus and instead use device card device pcic You also need to add 'pccard_enable="YES"' to /etc/rc.conf and since you're using a NIC you also have to setup 'pccard_ifconfig'. AFAIK the OLDCARD stuff has been removed so using card and pcic are not an option. Everything looks to be working correctly until I put a card in the pcmcia slot. I bet someone on this list should be able to get this nice piece of old hardware working ;-) Niels On Tue, Sep 13, 2005 at 04:34:51PM +0200, Tijl Coosemans wrote: > On Tuesday 13 September 2005 11:53, Niels Heinen wrote: > > I recently received a Toshiba 460CDT and am trying to get > > the most out of it. I am trying to make it scan for available networks and currently run the following two commands "ifconfig wi0 ssid ''" followed by "wicontrol -L", but I get wildley different results each time I run these commands - sometimes I get a list of 6 or 7 access points and other times I don't get any listed. These tests are carried out in the same location, consecutively, so I would expect to see the same number of available access points. Does anyone have any ideas as to what I'm missing, or what the problem is? The card is connected to a 15Db gain external antenna and if I run the same card and antenna under Windoze it gives me consistent results... I urge you to upgrade to FreeBSD 6, which has a _lot_ of new code and bug fixes that won't be backported to 5 (due to API changes in 6). I'm running that card or a very similar one (mine is an a/b/g card) on -current with no problems at all. 5, though, will, I'm afraid, never fully support those cards, at least not to the extent that 6 does and 7-current will. -- Frank Mayhar frank@exit.com http://www.exit.com/ Exit Consulting http://www.gpsclock.com/ http://www.exit.com/blog/frank/ From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Sep 14 15:50:22 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B446E16A41F for ; Wed, 14 Sep 2005 15:50:22 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from howie@nauticall.co.uk) Received: from mail.nauticall.co.uk (email.nauticall.co.uk [81.168.7.225]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E17DA43D46 for ; Wed, 14 Sep 2005 15:50:21 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from howie@nauticall.co.uk) Received: (qmail 19039 invoked by uid 508); 14 Sep 2005 17:23:31 +0100 Received: from unknown (HELO howie) (howie@nauticall.co.uk@10.100.1.2) by mail.nauticall.co.uk with SMTP; 14 Sep 2005 17:23:31 +0100 From: "Howard Drake" To: Date: Wed, 14 Sep 2005 16:56:50 +0100 Organization: Nauticall Ltd MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Mailer: Microsoft Office Outlook, Build 11.0.6353 Thread-Index: AcW5RZj00gEbel9UQA+kCb7t0tejaQAAbY9g In-Reply-To: <1126711705.3686.2.camel@realtime.exit.com> X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2800.1506 Message-Id: <20050914155021.E17DA43D46@mx1.FreeBSD.org> Cc: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Subject: RE: Senao WiFi problems X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: howie@nauticall.co.uk List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 14 Sep 2005 15:50:22 -0000 Frank, That would be ideal, unfortunately I have the system running on a dedicated board and an running Monowall which is currently based on 4.11, I'm running an older beta copy which is based on 5.3 (They tried 5.3 and then reverted to 4.11 - not sure why...) but I don't have the expertise to modify the base Monowall code so was hoping that there was something simpler I could try to fix this as apart from this problem it works great! I assume from what you say that I couldn't just recompile what I have with the Version 6 version of wi.c ? Normally you do not gain much on configuring make.conf with something else than pentiumpro: CPUTYPE?=pentiumpro CFLAGS= -O -pipe -march=pentiumpro CXXFLAGS+= -O -pipe -march=pentiumpro COPTFLAGS= -O -pipe -march=pentiumpro Recompiling your kernel with only the options you need will also help a bit. Adding more RAM will usually make your box snappier as it does not have to write to your SWAP. Normally you tweak your kernel to do some server specific tasks. A workstation will have a lot of different functions and I can't think of any particular enhancemend that will make much noticable difference BTW, I still can't find anything about your laptop's specifications in your email. Well, i figured out why kismet wasn't channel hopping, though i don't know exactly why, so i figured that i would post here for the archives. Some time back, I saw a post from Sam Leffler about using ath_rate_sample instead of onoe, so I set that in my kernel config file. well, today while rebuilding world/kernel, the kernel build blew up while building ath something-or-other, so on a whim i switched back to ath_rate_onoe, and not only did the kernel build successfully, but kismet now channel hops just dandy. i can't say for sure that switching =66rom 'sample' to 'onoe' is the real fix as I can't get a kernel to build with 'sample' right now to test with kismet, but i figured i would toss this out anyway. thanks, have a good one. --=20 Mike Oliver [see complete headers for contact information] --PEIAKu/WMn1b1Hv9 Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Disposition: inline -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.2 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQFDKy3JsWv7q8X6o8kRAl/iAJ4kDoNBVCdeAqfd/7SDq2TBM1ccmwCeI/NX yt4cMsBcokOF385pV+4ezQ0= =raeX -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --PEIAKu/WMn1b1Hv9-- From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Sep 17 00:22:02 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C58EE16A41F for ; Sat, 17 Sep 2005 00:22:02 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gjb@gbch.net) Received: from gw.gbch.net (gw.gbch.net [203.143.238.93]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id A850743D46 for ; Sat, 17 Sep 2005 00:22:00 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from gjb@gbch.net) Received: (qmail 54339 invoked from network); 17 Sep 2005 10:21:58 +1000 Received: from iliad.gbch.net (172.16.1.9) by gw.gbch.net with SMTP; 17 Sep 2005 10:21:58 +1000 Received: (qmail 808 invoked by uid 1001); 17 Sep 2005 10:21:57 +1000 Message-ID: Date: Sat, 17 Sep 2005 10:21:57 +1000 From: Greg Black To: Kiffin Gish References: <1126898216.1316.4.camel@localhost> <432B2019.9030007@ultra-secure.de> <1126899940.1316.12.camel@localhost> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <1126899940.1316.12.camel@localhost> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.2.1i; gjb-muttsend.sh 1.7 2004-10-05 X-Uptime: 92 days X-Operating-System: FreeBSD 5.4-RELEASE i386 X-Location: Brisbane, Australia; 27.49841S 152.98439E X-URL: http://www.gbch.net/gjb.html X-Blog: http://www.gbch.net/gjb/blog/ X-Image-URL: http://www.gbch.net/gjb/gjb-auug048.gif X-PGP-Key-Fingerprint: EBB2 2A92 A79D 1533 AC00 3C46 5D83 B6FB 4B04 B7D6 X-Request-PGP: http://www.gbch.net/keys/4B04B7D6.asc Cc: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Ideal kernel configuration for Dell Inspiron 8200 ...
