Now, to address the issue at large: you should direct this email to "questions@freebsd.org", because the "newbies" list/forum isn't a] supposed to answer this according to list charter, BION, and b] low-trafficked enough that it's been what, 4 days since you asked and no one has responded? The "more expert" types read questions@, but newbies@ has a low readership, and you can't expect support questions such as this answered.... Now, I seem to recall someone posting this or a very similar question to the questions@ list a few days back, and there is a way ... something in regard to a hint passed to the boot loader via the escape prompt prior to booting the installation program. Search the questions@ archives, and if you don't find the answer, repost your question to the other list and see if you don't have an answer in a few hours instead of a few days.... Good luck! Before I fired up X, i did this: kldload snd_emu10k1 sysctl hw.snd.pcm0.vchans=4 sysctl hw.snd.maxautovchans=4 then I did a startx, and KDE loaded, and durring the initial splash screen, I heard sound after it initialized peripherals. But after that, I couldnt get it to work. I tried using XMMS with OSS and eSound, and i tried kaboodle and nautan, all of them had no sound. So my questions are: Does FreeBSD 5.3 fully support the SB Audigy sound chip? If so, do I need to configure something in KDE to get the sound back? I've RTFM and manpages and assorted other info and was able to figure that I needed to compile "ath" into the kernel which is supposed to be the driver for the wireless card (note subject line) on my laptop. But thats where I run out of road. I really don't have a clue. Can connect with the built-in ethernet port but really would like to go wireless. Can someone point me to the right documentation to get this card up and running. I would really appreaciate any help and BTW I don't own an asbestos suit ;) Keith ___________________________________________________________ "Those who would trade safety for freedom deserve neither." To launch OpenOffice, you have to type something like ~/OpenOffice.org1.1.2/soffice It is good to create a shorter link to this file. J. Try opening the arts controller under multimedia. It will show several (20+) volume bars (General, CD, Phone, etc.). How I fixed this is, I played a CD in KsCD(?) so I could watch the track count and started to move each bar up till I heard sound. On my system it was ISO2000something?. Try that and see if it works. If KDE had sound at startup but not latter it is most like with the volume selection as described.
