Does IBM's "Power" > (power.org) initiative yield a viable target in light of many of us > hardware donors being unable to afford any to donate? IMHO the PPC Mac is a doomed platform now. IBM has probably no wish of continuing to make efforts for Apple when a) they got flamed by Apple (rare thing) for not delivering and b) they got Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo as customers. 10.4.1 w/P4 development machines will soon be available (two weeks). I'd bet they're "vanilla" Intel boxes, though I wouldn't be surprised if the future boxes will be OpenFirmware based with a HW lockin (or simply: a lack of support for any hardware/chipset other than what Apple will provide). Shouldn't be too hard to get FreeBSD to run on that (but at that point: why bother ?) Of course there are definitely plenty of PPC Macs out there, the price of which are going to be falling, but I see them no more useful than Alpha at this point (and then, Alpha at least made it possible to port FreeBSD to 64 bit). I think the question is: why should there be a PPC port in the future ? Certainly not for Apple machines, maybe for IBM (RS) boxes ? More than anything it proves (with Microsoft and the Xbox 360), that CPU architecture is less important nowadays. Let's see if the OS X developers and the market follows. NOTE: if this sounded like a recommendation NOT to donate to the FreeBSD project, ignore me -- Peter, David and Dag Erling are certainly better placed than me to say anything :) From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jun 7 12:17:34 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6775216A41C for ; Tue, 7 Jun 2005 12:17:34 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from peterg@ptree32.com.au) Received: from dommail.onthenet.com.au (dommail.OntheNet.com.au [203.13.70.57]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E4DAC43D48 for ; Tue, 7 Jun 2005 12:17:31 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from peterg@ptree32.com.au) Received: from dommail.onthenet.com.au (localhost.onthenet.com.au [127.0.0.1]) by dommail.onthenet.com.au (MOS 3.5.7-GR) with ESMTP id AQR05566; Tue, 7 Jun 2005 22:17:21 +1000 (EST) Received: from 65.41.37.177 by dommail.onthenet.com.au (MOS 3.5.7-GR) with HTTP/1.1; Tue, 7 Jun 2005 22:17:21 +1000 Date: Tue, 7 Jun 2005 22:17:21 +1000 From: To: Michael Dexter , freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailer: Mirapoint Webmail Direct 3.5.7-GR MIME-Version: 1.0 Message-Id: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Cc: Subject: Re: Apple x86 Ramifications? My initial reason for working on FreeBSD/PPC was to support embedded CPUs such as the Freescale PowerQUICC. The Apple announcement means that decent same-architecture hosts will be more scarce in the future, but that doesn't change my primary goal :) The IBM 970-based blade server could be a viable platform, as could PSIII/xbox360/gcube revolution :) PowerPC has a bright future I think. later, Peter. All pessimism aside, FreeBSD/PPC isn't an apple =20 product. It isn't even targeted apple specific. If apple wants to =20 become a software company or whatever this crazy(cagey?) new strategy =20= is, it doesn't make our job as developers(hackers ;-) ) any less =20 relevant. In fact it means that we have a chance to build a better =20 box and not compete with one more company. Don't misunderstand me, I =20= love my mac, but FreeBSD serves a completely different purpose. Many =20= people around the various internet news sites have been calling this =20 move crazy and terrible, saying it will ruin a good computing =20 environment. We have an opportunity not to do what they are, =20 throwing the proverbial bathwater out with the baby. And don't =20 forget guys, AIX is still evil, Linux us still a bad hack job, and =20 NetBSD isn't as fast as it should be, so RS/6000s and like peter said =20= Pegasos, Freescale and others are largely in need of a real operating =20= system, not to mention old and useful Macs. I say that now FreeBSD =20 has a unique opportunity to become a market leader in the PPC world, =20 and unless the whole universe has gone topsy-turvy that would be a =20 Good Thing=E2=84=A2.
