This could be the result of a broken device, connection problems of the network add-on card but also a bug in the firmware revision you're using which might make sense to work around if possible. Could you therefore please check which of the PCI device nodes doesn't have a "reg" property? To do so enter `show-devs` at the boot monitor prompt. You will get a list of all device nodes including two PCI bridges which will look like "/pci@1f,2000" and "/pci@1f,4000". For both of them do `cd `, e.g. `cd /pci@1f,2000`, followed by a `ls` and the devices on that PCI bus will be listed (this is a device tree and you can navigate with file-system like commands). For one of the two PCI busses probably no device will be listed for the other one it will look like "scsi@3" etc., please past this/these list(s). `cd` into each of the PCI devices nodes with e.g. `cd scsi@3` and enter `.properties`, you will get a list of the properties of the device node and their values. At least one of the PCI device nodes should be missing a "reg" property. Please paste the whole `.properties` output of this/ these node(s). From the level of a PCI device node you can go back to the PCI bridge node with a `cd ..`. There's no need to descend further than the PCI device nodes, i.e. you don't need to check all of the devices in the Ebus bridge node. This one should be save to just ignore in FreeBSD but the question is how you can install FreeBSD in the first place. From the above output it's not entirely clear if it refers to the unused EBus bridge on the add-on HME card which normally is disabled by the firmware or the onboard one which is used for the serial ports etc. (but which is more likely). At a first step you could try to remove the add-on HME card, if the node refers to the unused EBus bridge on this card it should just disappear then. If this doesn't help you could try to update to the latest firmware revision which is 3.27 and available from: http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Devices/Boot_PROM/BootPROM_Sun4u.html#U30 Marius From owner-freebsd-sparc64@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Jan 9 16:36:08 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2CF1E16A4CE for ; Sun, 9 Jan 2005 16:36:08 +0000 (GMT) Received: from mithlond.org (polyphoto1.comites.polymtl.ca [132.207.115.71]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 475E143D39 for ; Sun, 9 Jan 2005 16:36:07 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from tikho@anor.net) Received: (qmail 6386 invoked from network); 9 Jan 2005 16:35:25 -0000 Received: from unknown (HELO valinor.mithlond.org) (60.25.0.73) by 0 with SMTP; 9 Jan 2005 16:35:25 -0000 Received: from [192.168.1.3] (unknown [192.168.1.3]) by valinor.mithlond.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 44B6D8FC1B; Sun, 9 Jan 2005 16:35:40 +0000 (UTC) Message-ID: <41E15D1E.4040103@anor.net> Date: Mon, 10 Jan 2005 00:34:38 +0800 From: Cyril Tikhomiroff User-Agent: Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0 (Windows/20041206) X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Marius Strobl References: <41E09473.6070106@anor.net> <20050109145433.A21246@newtrinity.zeist.de> <41E13CEE.4060701@anor.net> <20050109163944.I217@newtrinity.zeist.de> In-Reply-To: <20050109163944.I217@newtrinity.zeist.de> X-Enigmail-Version: 0.89.5.0 X-Enigmail-Supports: pgp-inline, pgp-mime Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit cc: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Subject: Re: 5.3 cd installation panic X-BeenThere: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the Sparc List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 09 Jan 2005 16:36:08 -0000 Fine, I will have the network card removed, but it will take time since the server is in another country. I will also upgrade the PROM. I will continue this thread when it's done. By the way, I tried to install OpenBSD and the PCI network card doesn't work : while the kernel recognizes it as hme1, using it produces timeout errors. But under Solaris 8 it runs fine. I didn't try NetBSD. Thank you for the references for upgrading the PROM. Another question about the PROM, at least what version of the firmware FreeBSD (and OpenBSD) need to work correctly on a Ultra workstation ? All I get through a google research is that old firmwares will not work. Mine is 3.11, which isn't the oldest, nor the newest. As for the U30 I was passed on a device tree dump generated by ofwdump(8) under FreeBSD running with revision 3.9.5. The problematic node still could be only present in 3.11 or at least not 3.9.5 or only present when an add-on HME card (which also have their own firmware) is plugged in. The machine is definitely an Ultra 1E, and I am installing 5.3 from CDROM, and monitoring things via the port. Things go fine until FreeBSD probes the serial port. If I'm attached to ttya, it hangs there. If I'm attached to ttyb, it hangs there. If I pull off the serial cable before the serial probe and then reattach it, the machine is still hung. Was gibt's? Is there something really stupid I'm missing, or has anyone else experienced this? On startup, I set breakpoint within one of the threads. Program is started, some time passes, gdb stops at the breakpoint. Just as expected. Then I try to single step through the code, and this is weird: sooner or later, but always, happens this: (gdb) n 0x000000004092820c in sigprocmask () from /lib/libc.so.5 (gdb) Single stepping until exit from function sigprocmask, which has no line number information. 0x00000000407a4390 in _thread_kern_scheduler () from /usr/lib/libc_r.so.5 (gdb) Single stepping until exit from function _thread_kern_scheduler, which has no line number information. 0x00000000407a4b20 in _thread_kern_sched_state_unlock () from /usr/lib/libc_r.so.5 (gdb) thread [Current thread is 0 (process 10819)] (gdb) n Single stepping until exit from function _thread_kern_sched_state_unlock, which has no line number information. 0x00000000407a4120 in kevent () from /usr/lib/libc_r.so.5 (gdb) Single stepping until exit from function kevent, which has no line number information. 0x00000000407a4b30 in _thread_kern_sched_state_unlock () from /usr/lib/libc_r.so.5 (gdb) Single stepping until exit from function _thread_kern_sched_state_unlock, which has no line number information. 0x00000000407a45f0 in _thread_kern_scheduler () from /usr/lib/libc_r.so.5 (gdb) Single stepping until exit from function _thread_kern_scheduler, which has no line number information. Breakpoint 1, lb731_get_log_record (comm=0x2d2800, cp=0x7fdffed9598) at ../../../../src/drivers/lb731/lb731.c:1537 1537 if (ptr[0] == 0x00) After stepping through some pthreads (?) code (as shown above), execution returns to my function, but it's other place than before. Quite often it just hangs after few steps through this - no return to my code, Ctrl-C does nothing, I have to kill gdb externally. Machine is Ultra2, FreeBSD 5.3 RELEASE.
