So, I replaced the disk drive (40 GB Western Digital) that came with the Sun Blade 150 with a brand new 40 GB Western Digital drive and got the same thing. After more searching I saw someone's post about setting hw.ata.atapi_dma=0 at boot time. Then I did get a bit farther. After going through the entire install procedure as soon as it attempted to write to the new drive (to fsck the root partition) I started to see this: ad0: FAILURE - WRITE_DMA timed out ad0: TIMEOUT - READ_DMA retrying (2 retries left) LBA=1 ad0: FAILURE - READ_DMA timed out ad0: TIMEOUT - READ_DMA retrying (2 retries left) LBA=0 then a screen popped up: Unable to make new root filesystem on /dev/ad0a! Command returned status 36 [ OK ] [ Press enter or space ] I also read somewhere about setting the boot EEPROM back to factory defaults using the "set-defaults" command -- which I did and which did not seem to help. One thing I thought strange was the lack of the disk drive setup choice when I select Custom installation. I have: "2 Options, 3 Label, 4 etc..." but "1 Partition" is missing. What is going on here and how do I work around this problem? They seemed to have tweaked the firmware of the disks they use to work with the POS ATA controller the Blade 100/150 uses. When my Sun stock drive died, I went thru pure hell trying to find a disk that would work OK. Of 5 40GB drives I tried, only an IBM IC35L040AVVN07 worked (has IC35L040AVVN07-0/VA2OAF0C firmware) works OK (no *_DMA timeouts) at ATA66. -- -- David (obrien@FreeBSD.org) From owner-freebsd-sparc64@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Apr 8 17:39:12 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C4E4516A4CE; Fri, 8 Apr 2005 17:39:12 +0000 (GMT) Received: from web2.merit.edu (web2.merit.edu [198.108.62.193]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 837BC43D2F; Fri, 8 Apr 2005 17:39:12 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from web@merit.edu) Received: by web2.merit.edu (Postfix, from userid 9050) id C751E185F; Fri, 8 Apr 2005 13:39:11 -0400 (EDT) Date: Fri, 8 Apr 2005 13:39:11 -0400 From: William Bulley To: David O'Brien Message-ID: <20050408173911.GK16883@web2.merit.edu> Mail-Followup-To: William Bulley , David O'Brien , freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.2.1i cc: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Subject: Re: problems installing FreeBSD 5.3-RELEASE on UltraSPARC IIe X-BeenThere: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the Sparc List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 08 Apr 2005 17:39:12 -0000 According to David O'Brien : > > > After more searching I saw someone's post about setting > > hw.ata.atapi_dma=0 at boot time. > > This is the correct fix for this. Damn! This is terrible news. Did you test the other drives under solaris, or only under FreeBSD? It might be that other hard drives will work better once the newest ATA support is committed. I went through all kinds of agony on 5.3 with multiple types of hard drives, on multiple kinds of SATA disk controllers. That agony included lots of "WRITE_DMA timed out" and "READ_DMA timed out" messages. And I had plenty of recommendations that I needed to buy new hard disks. I did do that, and I did switch SATA controllers (trying three different controllers), but those changes never really solved the problems, they only changed the nature of the trouble I was seeing. Things have been much better for me with the latest ATAng changes in 6.x-current, and we now have the even newer ATAmkIII changes (which I have not tried yet). Admittedly all of my headaches were in i386, not sparc64, but it wouldn't surprise me if many of the same issues exist. -- Garance Alistair Drosehn = gad@gilead.netel.rpi.edu Senior Systems Programmer or gad@freebsd.org Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute or drosih@rpi.edu From owner-freebsd-sparc64@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Apr 8 19:22:55 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 39ECD16A4CE for ; Fri, 8 Apr 2005 19:22:55 +0000 (GMT) Received: from web2.merit.edu (web2.merit.edu [198.108.62.193]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 00DE043D54 for ; Fri, 8 Apr 2005 19:22:55 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from web@merit.edu) Received: by web2.merit.edu (Postfix, from userid 9050) id 83998185F; Fri, 8 Apr 2005 15:22:54 -0400 (EDT) Date: Fri, 8 Apr 2005 15:22:54 -0400 From: William Bulley To: Garance A Drosihn Message-ID: <20050408192254.GO16883@web2.merit.edu> Mail-Followup-To: William Bulley , Garance A Drosihn , freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.2.1i cc: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Subject: Re: problems installing FreeBSD 5.3-RELEASE on UltraSPARC IIe X-BeenThere: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the Sparc List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 08 Apr 2005 19:22:55 -0000 According to Garance A Drosihn : > What model of ATA controller is it? Only FreeBSD -- this is my FreeBSD Sparc64 machine. I dual boot Solaris at times, but I wasn't installing Solaris on it until I had a good FreeBSD installation. I did also try ATAmkIII{j,k} with the same results. -- -- David (obrien@FreeBSD.org) From owner-freebsd-sparc64@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Apr 8 20:08:34 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 275EA16A4CE for ; Fri, 8 Apr 2005 20:08:34 +0000 (GMT) Received: from people.fsn.hu (people.fsn.hu [195.228.252.137]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9AE5943D1F for ; Fri, 8 Apr 2005 20:08:29 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from bra@fsn.hu) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by people.fsn.hu (Postfix) with ESMTP id AE6CA8441E for ; Fri, 8 Apr 2005 22:08:27 +0200 (CEST) Received: from people.fsn.hu ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (people.fsn.hu [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with LMTP id 89014-05-4 for ; Fri, 8 Apr 2005 22:08:16 +0200 (CEST) Received: from [192.168.0.101] (fw.axelero.hu [195.228.243.120]) by people.fsn.hu (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0415A84418 for ; Fri, 8 Apr 2005 22:08:15 +0200 (CEST) Message-ID: <4256E4AD.1030100@fsn.hu> Date: Fri, 08 Apr 2005 22:08:13 +0200 From: Attila Nagy User-Agent: Debian Thunderbird 1.0 (X11/20050116) X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-2; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Virus-Scanned: amavisd-new at fsn.hu Subject: dmesg from an oldie (E3000) X-BeenThere: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the Sparc List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 08 Apr 2005 20:08:34 -0000 Hello, I've just throwed a FreeBSD 5.4-RC CD-ROM into this machine to see whether it boots or not.
