Probably related to this issue here http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-stable/2005-May/014509.html ? It was reported while I was in the middle of a cvsup (on x86) over the weekend. I got away fine, didn't seem to have any noticeable problems (apart from an annoying BIOS default I'd never noticed before). Here is my dmesg: Make sure that 'input-device' and 'output-device' are set to e.g. 'ttya'. Normally the firmware is expected to automatically switch to ttya when they are set to 'keyboard' and 'screen' respectively but no keyboard is plugged in but especially the firmware of the AXe has problems to properly determine whether a PS/2 keyboard is actually plugged in. If everything is set up correctly (including by the firmware) uart(4) should report that it's the console, e.g.: uart0: <16550 or compatible> addr 0x14003803f8-0x14003803ff irq 28 on ebus0 uart0: console (9600,n,8,1) From owner-freebsd-sparc64@FreeBSD.ORG Wed May 11 18:58:13 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6184516A4D0 for ; Wed, 11 May 2005 18:58:13 +0000 (GMT) Received: from mercury.acsalaska.net (mercury.acsalaska.net [209.112.173.226]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A1E2743D5E for ; Wed, 11 May 2005 18:58:12 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from royce@alaska.net) Received: from [10.0.102.101] (jander.prv.dmd.acsalaska.net [10.0.102.101]) by mercury.acsalaska.net (8.13.4/8.13.1) with ESMTP id j4BIwALa059546 for ; Wed, 11 May 2005 10:58:10 -0800 (AKDT) (envelope-from royce@alaska.net) Message-ID: <428255C2.1080400@alaska.net> Date: Wed, 11 May 2005 10:58:10 -0800 From: Royce Williams User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.7) Gecko/20040616 Mnenhy/0.7.2.0 X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org References: <20050429120037.D45F116A4F6@hub.freebsd.org> <72eecd381aed25e4e618d812e99238e0@xcllnt.net> <42726B21.6050907@alaska.net> <42731103.80106@alaska.net> In-Reply-To: <42731103.80106@alaska.net> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-ACS-Spam-Status: no X-ACS-Scanned-By: MD 2.48; SA 3.0.1; spamdefang 1.1 Subject: Re: 5.4-RCx "jumping to kernel entry" hang on Ultra1/2/30 X-BeenThere: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the Sparc List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 11 May 2005 18:58:13 -0000 On 4/29/2005 9:00 PM, Royce Williams wrote: > With the boot-only ISO, I get a clean boot every time. This typically means that uart(4) wasn't happy with what it saw in the OFW. The patch is at: http://alchemy.franken.de/~marius/kreator_machfb.diff and requires 6.0-current. For testing in addition to applying the patch and compiling a kernel with machfb(4), syscons(4), ukbd(4) and usb(4) enabled (have a look at how the patch changes the sparc64 GENERIC config file or just use that one) ttyX have to be enabled in /etc/ttys. To actually simplify testing I built custom install images which are at: http://people.freebsd.org/~marius//6.0-20050513-SNAP-sparc64-bootonly.iso.bz2 and http://people.freebsd.org/~marius//6.0-20050513-SNAP-sparc64-disc1.iso.bz2 The checksums of these images when decompressed are: MD5 (6.0-20050513-SNAP-sparc64-bootonly.iso) = 7694411beea290553f49520a5f174195 MD5 (6.0-20050513-SNAP-sparc64-disc1.iso) = a1a08b4b9d44a636d0d60fb17263934a I'm interested in: - Whether the graphical console works when 'input-device' is set to 'keyboard' and 'output-device' to screen and an USB keyboard is actually plugged in. - Whether the monitor also comes up with the VTY when both 'input-device' and 'output-device' are set to 'ttya' (i.e. using a serial console as the primary console). When booting the above install images the monitor should just show an all white screen with a black cursor in the top left corner in this configuration. - The machfb(4) bits of the dmesg. It would be great if someone could give this a try in the next couple of days as the plan actually is to enable creator(4), machfb(4) and syscons(4) in the sparc64 GENERIC kernel for FreeBSD 6.0 and the code and feature freeze for 6.0 starts really soon now. In case the graphical console works X should also work. For Blade 100 with USB keyboards Xorg 6.8.2 actually should work out of the box. When using machfb(4) on e.g. a U5/U10 with a RS232 keyboard the keyboard probably won't work properly under Xorg 6.8.2; it however should work when using the old 'keyboard' driver instead of the new 'kbd' one (search the freebsd-sparc64 archives for how to compile the xorg-server 6.8.2 port with the 'keyboard' driver instead). Booting from the CD I get to.. jumping to kernel entry at 0xc0040000 and the system hangs there. Did a seach and the only thing I could find was some other people asking about it at: http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-sparc64/2005-April/003028.html So anyone got a fix? Anything info I need to post? Thanks!
