While this isn't really a fix for the problem, it will probably get you the= re... 5.3 installs without any trouble, so if you just do a source upgrade from there you'll probably be ok... just takes awhile I didn't try the generic kernel config, but my custom kernel ran more or less just fine Along the lines of kernel upgrades, any word on why the new uart driver makes the system ignore 7/8 of my keystrokes on my RS232 keyboard? I've seen a couple other people mention it, but haven't seen any word as to why yet... I tried switching back to the sab driver with 5.4 hoping to fix that, but the compile errors out without device uart enabled... and finishing the source upgrade when the keyboard only registers a keystroke after you push the thing 5-10 times is a bit of a pain in the index finger... Anything info I need to post? > You're most likely not using a serial console. FreeBSD/sparc64 up to including 5.4 only really supports serial consoles. Prior to 5.4 however the FreeBSD/sparc64 GENERIC kernels came with ofw_console(4) enabled which happens to work with graphical consoles to a certain extent. In the FreeBSD/sparc64 5.4 GENERIC kernel that bit of support for graphical consoles was traded for proper serial console support (which also just sucked when driven by ofw_console(4) on a machine that uses a chip not supported by sab(4) or zs(4)) by switching from the ofw_console(4)/sab(4)/zs(4) combination to uart(4). If you want to use FreeBSD/sparc64 5.4 with a graphical console anyway you have to compile a custom kernel. On a machine with a Creator, Creator3D or Elite3D card and a RS232 keyboard you should use the creator(4)/syscons(4)/uart(4). Otherwise your only choice is to revert to ofw_console(4). Note that uart(4) can't be used together with ofw_console(4) in the same kernel as ofw_console(4) isn't a proper driver causing both to conflict at several levels. There's no simple "fix" to this other than to complete the native support for graphical consoles in FreeBSD/sparc64. As it currently stands FreeBSD 6.0 and 5.5 most likely will support graphical consoles on most of the sparc64 machines FreeBSD currently runs on in the GENERIC kernel (read: expect SBus- based and non-Mach64 PCI graphics cards and PS/2 keyboards). No such luck here. I get this:- Fatal server error: xf86MapVidMem: could not mmap screen [s=2000,a=81000000] (Invalid argument) FWIW I am using the ati driver. The console itself works fine, after I applied the ohci_pci.c.diff. Could you please provide the full Xorg.0.log? Btw., could you please give the patch at: http://alchemy.franken.de/~marius/fwohci.diff a try whether it fixes attaching the onboard FireWire controller? Unfortunately, I was stopped by the classic 'hangs after jumping to the kernel' problem. I guess that I need to switch to using a serial console? Might be something as simple as a missing PCI ID for that chip; if that string actually is 'ATI' rather than 'ATY' then it's at least a chip that I'm so far not aware of being used in sparc64 machines. I see recently that some kind person has posted a fix, but I am unsure about how to apply it. The fix is listed here: http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-sparc64 But how do I use it with a current 5.4 install cd? While there is no real technical obstacle to this the problem is that syscons(4) etc. assumes a fixed font width of 8 pixels while we really want 12 on sparc64 so we can e.g. honour the default text screen resolution set in OFW. Dealing with this properly means changing syscons(4), its ioctls, etc. accordingly and that's outside the scope of what im currently trying to get to work. Sorry. This should make xorg-server port and package work out of the box for sparc64.
