I managed to install 5.3 eventually and I have now updated to 6.0-GENERIC. I have done buildworld, and built and installed a Kernel using the GENERIC config file as is as this agrees with the errata: device sc device creator options KBD_INSTALL_CDEV However, when I reboot, the console gets as far as: getty[437]: open /dev/screen : no such file or directory getty[438]: open /dev/ttya : no such file or directory and then the console freezes - the keyboard does not work and the only message is on tty0 when I su to root after a remote SSH logon. PC 0xc0040f80 in the kernel is in trap(). Checking the code, we should be panicking since this is an undefined (implementation-specific) trap number as far as FreeBSD is concerned. But we shouldn't be spiralling into endless invalid-instruction traps, which is 0x10. I booted Solaris 9 on the machine and it properly reports memory ECC errors on the system so this shoudn't be fatal. So it appears there are two bugs: 1. We should define trap type 0x63 like the existing ecc-error trap number (0x41?) and just notify the user. 2. We should fix the trap handler to not blow up on undefined traps. I'll try to dig into this but someone more familiar with SPARC assembly would find it much faster :) Thanks for any input! -- Doug White | FreeBSD: The Power to Serve dwhite@gumbysoft.com | www.FreeBSD.org From owner-freebsd-sparc64@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Jun 26 22:52:06 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: sparc64@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-sparc64@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C17EE16A41C for ; Sun, 26 Jun 2005 22:52:06 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from dwhite@gumbysoft.com) Received: from carver.gumbysoft.com (carver.gumbysoft.com [66.220.23.50]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AAE5E43D1D for ; Sun, 26 Jun 2005 22:52:06 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from dwhite@gumbysoft.com) Received: by carver.gumbysoft.com (Postfix, from userid 1000) id A613E72DD4; Sun, 26 Jun 2005 15:52:06 -0700 (PDT) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by carver.gumbysoft.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id A439C72DCB for ; Sun, 26 Jun 2005 15:52:06 -0700 (PDT) Date: Sun, 26 Jun 2005 15:52:06 -0700 (PDT) From: Doug White To: sparc64@freebsd.org In-Reply-To: <20050626152732.X66393@carver.gumbysoft.com> Message-ID: <20050626155109.Q66393@carver.gumbysoft.com> References: <20050626152732.X66393@carver.gumbysoft.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Cc: Subject: Re: bug in trap handler? No, it's due to the lack of a SUNW,socal driver. The Ex500 servers have native fibre channel disks usually connected to a socal controller board. There's indeed also an esp controller on these machines, but no parallel SCSI disk bays. Booting off the esp using an external drive works (I did that here with an E4500, Marius did some experiments on it), but is anything else but an ideal solution. -- J"org Wunsch Unix support engineer joerg_wunsch@interface-systems.de http://www.interface-systems.de/~j/ From owner-freebsd-sparc64@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Jun 29 08:18:25 2005 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 62AD516A41C for ; Wed, 29 Jun 2005 08:18:25 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from j@ida.interface-business.de) Received: from ida.interface-business.de (ida.interface-business.de [193.101.57.9]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1D13743D5D for ; Wed, 29 Jun 2005 08:18:25 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from j@ida.interface-business.de) Received: by ida.interface-business.de (Postfix, from userid 107) id 154A77A14; Wed, 29 Jun 2005 10:18:24 +0200 (MET DST) Date: Wed, 29 Jun 2005 10:18:24 +0200 From: Joerg Wunsch To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Message-ID: <20050629081823.GD95355@ida.interface-business.de> References: <1119246217.29224.1.camel@lmail.bathnetworks.co.uk> <20050624214047.V47411@carver.gumbysoft.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20050624214047.V47411@carver.gumbysoft.com> X-Phone: +49-351-31809-14 X-PGP-Fingerprint: 5E84 F980 C3CA FD4B B584 1070 F48C A81B 69A8 5873 Organization: interface systems GmbH, Dresden User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.6i Cc: Subject: Re: Sun U10 Installation Problem X-BeenThere: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: Joerg Wunsch List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the Sparc List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 29 Jun 2005 08:18:25 -0000 As Doug White wrote: > Also I strongly suggest using a Sun-supplied CDROM drive and not a > 3rd party one.
