I'm not a disinterested party, as I have been involved with Walnut Creek CDROM and FreeBSD Mall, Inc. for over 8 years now. However, I've stated my feelings many times. I like our old policy. We never used to list this kind of company before and I see no reason to now. We should only list CDROM vendors that do one of the following things : 1) Contribute money to the FreeBSD Foundation (pledges to do so are irrelevant, real contributions after they have already been made should only be counted. A pledged percentage of profit is especially irrelevant, since most such businesses are break even with little or no profit after salaries) 2) Employ committers to work on specific or general FreeBSD projects. 3) Make substantial advocacy contributions to FreeBSD (a Linux company that sells FreeBSD as an afterthought is not likely to do this). 4) Serve a geographical region that is not well-served by existing CDROM vendors. I don't recall seeing any requests from vendors where there was a doubt in my mind about if this was a grey area. All requests seem to be from one well defined class of vendor : 1) Vendors that employ committers directly, make hardware and monetary donations to other committers, spend money on FreeBSD promotion and advocacy, etc. 2) Vendors that make substantial advocacy contributions. 3) Vendors started by a small group of people in a country that they feel is not well served by existing larger North American FreeBSD distributors. Usually these come and go over time, but if there is a niche they are filling we should list them. 4) Vendors that sell CDs for about $2 each, take a dime of profit for themselves, and are detrimental to the project by stealing sales from vendors of the first 3 categories. - Murray From owner-freebsd-www@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jan 17 03:55:27 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-www@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E4EDA16A4D0 for ; Mon, 17 Jan 2005 03:55:26 +0000 (GMT) Received: from digger1.defence.gov.au (digger1.defence.gov.au [203.5.217.4]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D4F8443D46 for ; Mon, 17 Jan 2005 03:55:19 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from Michal.Roszkowski@dsto.defence.gov.au) Received: from ednmsw503.dsto.defence.gov.au (ednmsw503.dsto.defence.gov.au [131.185.2.150]) by digger1.defence.gov.au with ESMTP id j0H3s742007259 for ; Mon, 17 Jan 2005 14:24:07 +1030 (CST) Received: from muttley.dsto.defence.gov.au (unverified) by ednmsw503.dsto.defence.gov.au for ; Mon, 17 Jan 2005 14:25:12 +1030 Received: from ednex501.dsto.defence.gov.au (ednex501.dsto.defence.gov.au [131.185.2.81])j0H3lmQ24861 for ; Mon, 17 Jan 2005 14:17:48 +1030 (CST) Received: by ednex501.dsto.defence.gov.au with Internet Mail Service (5.5.2653.19) id ; Mon, 17 Jan 2005 14:17:25 +1030 Message-ID: From: "Roszkowski, Michal" To: "'www@FreeBSD.org'" Date: Mon, 17 Jan 2005 14:17:41 +1030 MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Internet Mail Service (5.5.2653.19) Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Subject: screen-4.0.2_1 package link refernces non-existent file X-BeenThere: freebsd-www@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: FreeBSD Project Webmasters List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 17 Jan 2005 03:55:27 -0000 searching your port collection for "screen" via: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/ports.cgi?query=screen&stype=name&release=5.3-RELEASE%2Fi386 finds screen-4.0.2_1, however the package link is broken. This is because screen is no longer built as a package, IIRC: % $ grep PACKAGE /usr/ports/misc/screen/Makefile | fmt % NO_PACKAGE= Tends to loop using 100% CPU when used from package % - perhaps it hard-codes information about the build host From owner-freebsd-www@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jan 17 11:02:25 2005 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-www@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5EC4A16A51D for ; Mon, 17 Jan 2005 11:02:25 +0000 (GMT) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [216.136.204.21]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2BC7A43D39 for ; Mon, 17 Jan 2005 11:02:25 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (peter@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.1/8.13.1) with ESMTP id j0HB2ONi071324 for ; Mon, 17 Jan 2005 11:02:24 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Received: (from peter@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.13.1/8.13.1/Submit) id j0HB2Njb071318 for freebsd-www@freebsd.org; Mon, 17 Jan 2005 11:02:23 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org) Date: Mon, 17 Jan 2005 11:02:23 GMT Message-Id: <200501171102.j0HB2Njb071318@freefall.freebsd.org> X-Authentication-Warning: freefall.freebsd.org: peter set sender to owner-bugmaster@freebsd.org using -f From: FreeBSD bugmaster To: freebsd-www@FreeBSD.org Subject: Current problem reports assigned to you X-BeenThere: freebsd-www@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: FreeBSD Project Webmasters List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 17 Jan 2005 11:02:25 -0000 Current FreeBSD problem reports Critical problems Serious problems S Submitted Tracker Resp. If I want to have all translated items in newsflash.sgml, I'm dependent on the name of the day in english version now. However, date name "04" or "06" looks very ugly for us and furthermore, the common style in news.xml is without the leading zero. Not all the FreeBSD committers have access to the scripts of the cron job. Thus, the canonical way is to wait for the next scheduled web build and see if the changes reached the online site. 2. Some times, the build may fail for reasons unrelated to one particular change. The build is fixed by a committer with a bit of free time. Everyone waits for the next scheduled build to fire up. Then the www/en/news/status pages would include a simple link in their stardard footer, as generated by report.xsl, and we're done :-) > Ok so I don't seem to be able to check out from www let alone check > in.. I lost the domain to a spammer last year. Check the whois on chifug.org and the web site with links on the right hand side. Also the mailto at the bottom of the page does not send email to chifug.org but to sbip.org. Further tracing of domains, registrars and hosting companies lead to bascily spammers. With any luck I should be able to grab this domain back when it expires May. Post incremental patches that remove formatting HTML commands (<font>, etc..) and replace it with structural tags (<div>, etc..) and CSS properties. You can post such patches to this mailing list. 2. In parallel, you can start experimenting with different layouts or color schemes. The work in #1 should make it to make presentational changes without large diffs to the SGML/HTML. When you think you've got something, again just post it here. Some of the complaints about the main page are the orange navigation boxes on either side (the color is ugly, and there are too many links so it is hard to find the important stuff). Whenever you have an idea, suggestion, or complaint but don't have time to fix it yourself with a patch, just post here with the details. - Murray From owner-freebsd-www@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Jan 21 23:07:18 2005 Return-Path: <owner-freebsd-www@FreeBSD.ORG> Delivered-To: freebsd-www@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.FreeBSD.org (mx1.freebsd.org [216.136.204.125]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BF68916A4CE for <freebsd-www@freebsd.org>; Fri, 21 Jan 2005 23:07:18 +0000 (GMT) Received: from ns4.nukezone.com (ns4.nukezone.com [207.44.152.66]) by mx1.FreeBSD.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 64D7F43D58 for <freebsd-www@freebsd.org>; Fri, 21 Jan 2005 23:07:18 +0000 (GMT) (envelope-from freebsd@nbritton.org) X-ClientAddr: 127.0.0.1 Received: from nbritton.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) (authenticated (0 bits)) by ns4.nukezone.com (8.11.6/8.11.6) with ESMTP id j0LMtCX21895; Fri, 21 Jan 2005 16:55:12 -0600 Received: from 208.247.248.8 (SquirrelMail authenticated user freebsd@nbritton.org) by www.nbritton.org with HTTP; Fri, 21 Jan 2005 16:55:12 -0600 (CST) Message-ID: <51187.208.247.248.8.1106348112.squirrel@www.nbritton.org> Date: Fri, 21 Jan 2005 16:55:12 -0600 (CST) From: <freebsd@nbritton.org> To: <chris@czv.com> In-Reply-To: <E9974E2B-6BD3-11D9-B1CC-000A95C969C6@czv.com> References: <E9974E2B-6BD3-11D9-B1CC-000A95C969C6@czv.com> X-Priority: 3 Importance: Normal X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: SquirrelMail (version 1.2.5) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-yoursite-MailScanner-Information: Please contact the ISP for more information X-yoursite-MailScanner: Found to be clean X-MailScanner-From: freebsd@nbritton.org cc: freebsd-www@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Rework of the FreeBSD website[was:FreeBSD'sVisualIdentity:Outdated?] X-BeenThere: freebsd-www@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list List-Id: FreeBSD Project Webmasters <freebsd-www.freebsd.org> List-Unsubscribe: <http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-www>, <mailto:freebsd-www-request@freebsd.org?subject=unsubscribe> List-Archive: <http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-www> List-Post: <mailto:freebsd-www@freebsd.org> List-Help: <mailto:freebsd-www-request@freebsd.org?subject=help> List-Subscribe: <http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-www>, <mailto:freebsd-www-request@freebsd.org?subject=subscribe> X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 21 Jan 2005 23:07:18 -0000 > > On Jan 21, 2005, at 4:16 PM, Nikolas Britton wrote: > >> 1. UNIX and MS-DOS are both "Registered" Trade Marks and therefor need the ®, (R), or * symbol "Service mark --> used on services; use SM when not federally registered Trademark --> used on goods; use TM when not fed. registered.
